Sandström, Malin January 2022 (has links)

How about NO! : Learning with Medusa

Mittal, Antara January 2022 (has links)
This thesis report explores and talks about my different experiences, thoughts, ideas, designs and field trips that I took in order to make my project happen. For my project, I created a 3D graphic book and I wanted to educate, empower and start conversations with young teen girls in India about consent and victim blaming through it. I have explored how to talk about a serious topic such as rape without triggering people, given a detailed insight as to how I discovered my visual style for my book, explored how people in India react to my project, sex education level taught in India, collaborated with different people in Sweden and India that helped make my project work and used a metaphorical story of Medusa to communicate my message.

Yardang Morphometry and Substrate Properties in Ignimbrites of the Campo Piedra Pomez, Argentina Compared with the Medusae Fossae Formation, Mars

McDougall, Dylan Stephen 09 August 2022 (has links) (PDF)
Yardangs are streamlined ridges carved by the action of wind into consolidated yet erodible substrates. The direction of sediment transport is indicated by their elongate shapes and steep sides which redirects most of the sediment transport layer onto adjacent low-lying surfaces, resulting in lower erosion rates on the elevated areas. Despite this simple premise, the rates of erosion and transport as well as the material properties necessary to form yardangs have until now been largely unknown. This study aims to determine how material properties affect yardang dimensions in order to use yardang morphometry to derive the mechanical properties of a surface that has yet to been explored in situ. As a terrestrial analog for planetary yardangs, we use ignimbrite samples and a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) derived from drone imagery of the Campo Piedra Pomez, Argentina. For comparison, we examine a martian analog using a DTM generated by the HiRISE instrument team for a section of the Medusae Fossae Formation northeast of Aeolis Dorsa. We use the DTMs along with thin sections, porosity, density, and strength measurements of yardang materials to understand the conditions contributing to yardang morphology. This method reveals microscopic evidence of nuanced differences in terrestrial ignimbrite depositional processes that create strong, lightweight, yardang-forming ignimbrite like that suggested to occur in the Medusae Fossae Formation. On average, the CPP ignimbrite samples have 49.51 ± 0.43 percent porosity, density of 1.26 ± 0.13 g/cm^3, and uniaxial compressive strength of 4.88 ± 2.86 MPa. Using the topographic structure of yardangs in the DTMs, we automatically extract yardang polygons and characterize their length, width, height, and spacing in four directions. We ratio these measurements and find that yardang width over minimum crosswind spacing has a geometric mean near one for 4102 terrestrial yardangs (~0.7) as well as for 1269 martian yardangs (~1.3). The ratio of ~1 for closely spaced yardangs is probably caused by increased windspeeds enhancing erosion in the gaps between yardangs until the gaps achieve the same cross-sectional area as the yardangs. Finally, we use regressions of the material properties and morphometry data to suggest that if formation conditions are the same as in the Campo Piedra Pomez, the Medusae Fossae Formation surface would have 52.04 + 1.41 / - 1.37 percent porosity, density of 1.19 ± 0.02 g/cm^3 and strength of 0.64 + 0.84 / -0.36 MPa. These results indicate that topography, porosity, strength, and density attenuate the formation processes that ultimately determine the morphometric properties of yardangs. This establishes a framework on which to make progress towards a quantitative understanding of yardang morphology and evolution. The ArcGIS toolboxes and Python scripts used to obtain our results are available at https://github.com/dmcdoug/yardangtools.

Incitament för centraliserad hantering av externa serviceavtal / Incentive for Centralized Management of External Service Agreements

Björling Nordström, Sebastian, Pruul Trueman, Eric January 2018 (has links)
At the moment there are no guidelines to how external service agreements should be managed and administered at Södersjukhuset. The goal with this report has been to provide Södersjukhuset with supporting arguments to decide if they should centralize the management of service agreements or not. In order to achieve this goal it was essential to: study and get a better understanding of the term centralization, examine the serviceagreements’ to get a greater awareness of their extent and analyze Södersjukhuset to gain a better insight of the organisation as a whole. Service agreements were accumulated throughmeetings with the hospital’s employees and through the software Medusa. Calculations were conducted from the agreements to display Södersjukhuset’s current situation. Themanagement of the hospital’s service agreements was considered decentralized and wasdeemed to convey negative economical factors. A proposed solution for the problem was a centralized structure for managing external service agreements which would help the hospital organize and benefit it economically.

Reflections on Beauty and Ugliness: An Exceptional Archaic Greek Mirror at the Getty

Fowler, Michael Anthony 08 December 2020 (has links)
This paper consists of a focused, formal, and iconographic analysis of a unique Late Archaic bronze hand mirror said to originate in Magna Graecia, now in the Getty Museum. Of particular interest is the way the object fuses and juxtaposes two semantically dense and interrelated devices from the ancient Greek world: the mirror and the severed head of the Medusa (gorgoneion). While gorgoneia are generally encountered as ornaments on Greek mirrors, the Getty example is the only extant case in which Medusa’s head occupies the entire backside of the mirror, effectively functioning as a Janus-faced counterpart to the user’s face reflected in the disc. Scholars tend to explain the significance of gorgoneia on objects like the Getty mirror with reference to apotropaic and/or humorous effects. Yet Fowler proposes that the mirror’s incorporation of the gorgoneion may be appreciated on deeper conceptual and phenomenological levels: as a visual “comment” on the nature of the image (representational and reflected) and of (female) beauty and ugliness, which is accomplished by, and experienced through, using the object. Close examination of the Getty mirror thus offers critical insights into the complex interplay between gender, aesthetics, image-making, and visual experience in ancient Greek culture.

Fate of Heavy Metals in Waste to Energy (WtE) Processes / Tungmetallers beteende i vattenbehandlingsprocess genom WtE processer

Chamoun, Ninus, Kjellvertz, Viktor, Mahajan, William, Song, Yuanchao January 2016 (has links)
This study was made to increase the understanding of how heavy metals in the aqueous phase are removed at low initial concentrations in different pH and Eh values. The reaction that has been studied is mainly hydroxide precipitation and adsorption in a condensate treatment. In the study, data from one of Vattenfalls waste incinerators was analysed and the results from the data were then compared to previous studies. To increase the understanding, modelling of the heavy metals behaviour in the given concentrations was then made with Medusa and PHREEQC. The heavy metals that were analysed were Sb, As, Pb, Zn, Cr, and Cd. The low initial concentration that vary between 36.1-23600 μg/l complicates the removal process because it corresponds in a low driving force and the results are hard to compare to other studies since the initial concentrations vary between 10-100 mg/l. From the modelling and the measurement data it can be seen that Pb, Zn, Cr, and Cd was removed by hydroxide precipitation at pH 10. According to the speciation calculations, the dominant species at this pH are Pb(OH) 2 , Cd(OH)2, Zn(OH)2 and Cr(OH)3. For arsenic a clear conclusion could not be drawn from the modelling and the measurement data because of low precision. Due to the limited thermodynamic parameters of antimony in comparison with other heavy metals in the database of Medusa and PHREEQC, the modelling of antimony behaviour in condensate treatment has relatively larger uncertainty is low. The modelling results show that the main species in acidic solutions for antimony is Sb(OH)3 and in basic solutions Sb(OH)-6. Further investigation for antimony in needed for a clear conclusions to be drawn

Gametogênese e desenvolvimento embrionário de Nausithoe aurea (Scyphozoa, Coronatae) do canal de São Sebastião - SP. / Gametogenesis and embryonic development of Nausithoe aurea (Scyphozoa, Coronatae) from the São Sebastião Channel - SP.

Morandini, André Carrara 13 September 1999 (has links)
Nausithoe aurea Silveira & Morandini, 1997 is a metagenetic and dioecious species with external fertilization. The oocytes are released continuously (55 days in laboratory), but with great variations in the daily number. In the embryonic development the cleavage, after the 8 cells stage, changes from holoblastic and adequal to pseudospiral. The gastrulation occurs through multipolar ingression and begin 24 hours after fertilization. The general histological structure of the gonads resembles other Scyphozoa, in which the gonocytes proliferate from the gastrodermis, migrate and differentiate in the mesoglea. In the male gonad the germ cells are arranged in distinctive layers and form follicles (cysts). In the female gonad the oocytes develop from the germinative zone in the gastrodermis and present a maturing gradient from this point on (oral-aboral sections). The oocytes are free in the gonad mesoglea, without association to any cell. The spatial relation of the coronal musculature, gonads and coronal groove, is a character to be used in the systematics of the genus Nausithoe Kölliker, 1853.

Les développements architecturaux à Leptis Magna pendant l'époque sévérienne (193 – 235) / The architectural developments at Leptis Magna during the Severan period (193 – 235)

Ben Aros, Mohamed 14 June 2013 (has links)
Leptis Magna has played a vital role in the history of North Africa. This role is based on the economic data of the city and the good management of its elites who are opened the policy of Romanization by adopting the Roman customs and patterns of Roman architecture. Among elites, most famous are those of the family Septimii which allowed his child, Septimius Severus, came to the throne in 193 AD. Under the reign of this emperor, Leptis Magna reached its peak of prosperity and became the Rome of Africa by setting up a massive constructions program: “The Severan Buildings” are the subject of this study. The choice of this subject is essentially justified by the importance of planning lepcitain characteristics at the Severan period, which generated abundant work in multiple languages. Now an assessment is necessary to highlight the importance and originality of this Severan phase: both for the city itself as well as for imperial ideology, which is conveyed brilliantly. We will try here to know why Septimius Severus gave his full attention to build these magnificent buildings in a short period. Perhaps because it was his hometown? Or was the town an advantageous asset for Rome? The beauty of these great monuments dating from the Roman era requires a historical and scientific research in the urban fabric: To know their operation and their role in Roman society; to study their aesthetic components and to find the common points between them, also to measure the amplitude of the artistic production and its relationships with the political and economic development of the city.

Radiometric characterisation of vineyard soils, Western Cape, South Africa

Mlwilo, Nolasco Anton January 2010 (has links)
This study is aimed at investigating the feasibility of using the radiometric technique as an alternative to traditional methods for determining soil physico-chemical parameters which are important for terroir characterization. In-situ and ex-situ radiometric analyses of soil from three vineyard blocks of Simonsig Wine Estate in the Stellenbosch district (Western Cape, South Africa) were studied. A mobile MEDUSA gamma-ray detection system comprising a CsI(Na) crystal (length 15 cm, diameter 7 cm) and associated electronics mounted on a portable trolley were used for partial terroir characterisation. Thereafter activity concentrations of 40K, 232Th series and 238U series in soil (top ~30 cm) from the measured MEDUSA spectra (0 – 3 MeV) were extracted by means of the full-spectrum analysis (FSA) method. A lead-shielded HPGe detector was used for analyzing collected soil samples while soil physico-chemical parameters were analysed using standard methods at research and commercial laboratories.
