Social networking : a psycho-educational analysis of online adolescent friendshipsDavel, Coriena 11 1900 (has links)
Online adolescent friendships and social networking among adolescents are current phenomena that have emerged, and exploded, as part of the digital age and the vast development of communication technologies. The primary aim of this study was to gain knowledge and understanding regarding the nature and quality of online friendships and social networking among adolescents. A sequential explanatory mixed method design, was put to use for the purpose of this study. The quantitative data was collected first in the form of a short survey, by utilising a self-developed questionnaire to obtain a general overview of the social network practices and the forming and maintaining of online friendships among adolescents. Twenty five participants took part in the survey. This study was followed by a qualitative study in the form of interviews, to clarify, elaborate and explain the quantitative findings. Five information rich participants were interviewed. The findings of the empirical investigation revealed that adolescents, being part of the Net Generation, base their concept of socialising with friends on digital and communication technology, especially cell phones. They are connected to their friends 24 hours a day. The sense of safety and support they experience through this constant connectedness strengthens their self-esteem, self-confidence and self-worth and contributes to their identity formation. It is therefore recommended that parents and educators should accept that adolescents live in a virtual world and their new way of socialising, needs to be acknowledged. Parents and educators should adjust accordingly, by getting educated in this field themselves. The Net Generation is a generation who focuses on relationships and collaboration through technology and this should be exploited by anybody who has contact or interacts with the adolescent of today. / Psychology of Education / M. NPS AUV workbench: collaborative environment for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) mission planning and 3D visualizationLee, Chin Siong 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / alities. The extensible Markup Language (XML) is used for data storage and message exchange, Extensible 3D (X3D) Graphics for visualization and XML Schema-based Binary Compression (XSBC) for data compression. The AUV Workbench provides an intuitive cross-platform-capable tool with extensibility to provide for future enhancements such as agent-based control, asynchronous reporting and communication, loss-free message compression and built-in support for mission data archiving. This thesis also investigates the Jabber instant messaging protocol, showing its suitability for text and file messaging in a tactical environment. Exemplars show that the XML backbone of this open-source technology can be leveraged to enable both human and agent messaging with improvements over current systems. Integrated Jabber instant messaging support makes the NPS AUV Workbench the first custom application supporting XML Tactical Chat (XTC). Results demonstrate that the AUV Workbench provides a capable testbed for diverse AUV technologies, assisting in the development of traditional single-vehicle operations and agent-based multiple-vehicle methodologies. The flexible design of the Workbench further encourages integration of new extensions to serve operational needs. Exemplars demonstrate how in-mission and post-mission event monitoring by human operators can be achieved via simple web page, standard clients or custom instant messaging client. Finally, the AUV Workbench's potential as a tool in the development of multiple-AUV tactics and doctrine is discussed. / Civilian, Singapore Defence Science and Technology Agency

Senescent cell clearance brings into play the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) and immune cells from the innate and adaptive immunity including macrophages (Mφ). In this study, we report that the SASP has a pleiotropic effect on immune cell activity including recruitment, activation and differentiation. We show that human Mφ exposed to the SASP of human fibroblasts develop a SASP-specific inflammatory profile characterized by pro- inflammatory (M1) secretion (e.g. IL-1β, GM-CSF) and anti-inflammatory (M2) surface markers (CD23 and CD206). The SASP also increases Mφ invasion but has no effect on monocyte differentiation. Co-culture models show that while NK cells are likely the direct effectors of senescent cell specific killing, their activity is modulated by other immune cells including Mφ, which reduced NK-mediated killing, suggesting a M2 profile. Alternatively, CD8+ T lymphocytes are essential for senescent cell killing by NK cells. Finally, CD4+ T cells cultured for 48h in the SASP secrete high-levels of IL-4, indicating a Th2 polarization. Overall, our data reveal that the SASP can modulate Mφ and other immune cells involved in senescent cell clearance and surprisingly promote an immunosuppressive response that could be important in tissue repair.

”Man behöver inte folks nummer längre” : En studie om hur studenter använder meddelandekommunikation via smartphones / ”You don´t need people’s phone numbers anymore” : A study of how students use message communication through smartphonesDiring, Ellinor, Sundelin, Simon January 2013 (has links)
How do young adult students communicate through their smartphones today? Which applications and features do they choose? What motivates their choices for the various possible situations? In this paper we investigate which communication channels young adult students in Sweden use for private message communication in their smartphones, in what way they use the channels and why they choose specific channels for different types of communication. In Sweden today, there are numerous of different ways of communicate through smartphones. We have interviewed ten Swedish young adult students regarding their use. The results speaks for that SMS has proven to still be used very frequently, even though it has existed for many years and that there are plenty of other ways to communicate through private messages today. Social media, primarily Facebook, also attracts users to communicate through private messages with their smartphones. SMS isn’t any longer the obvious method for sending a message. By presenting the result of our study, we hope to provide for future design resolutions and to give the next generation of smartphones communication tools that are as optimal as possible.

OpenFlow based load balancing and proposed theory for integration in VoIP networkPandita, Shreya 21 May 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / In today's internet world with such a high traffic, it becomes inevitable to have multiple servers representing a single logical server to share enormous load. A very common network configuration consists of multiple servers behind a load balancer. The load balancer determines which server would service a clients request or incoming load from the client. Such a hardware is expensive, runs a fixed policy or algorithm and is a single point of failure. In this paper, we will implement and analyze an alternative load balancing architecture using OpenFlow. This architecture acquires flexibility in policy, costs less and has the potential to be more robust. This paper also discusses potential usage of OpenFlow based load balancing for media gateway selection in SIP-PSTN networks to improve VoIP performance.

Mobiliųjų paslaugų portalų technologijų tyrimas / Research of mobile portals technologiesNajulis, Mindaugas 03 June 2005 (has links)
Information technologies and mobile telecommunications rapidly enter our personal and social life. Mobile phone is no longer luxury – it has become a necessity. Growing volumes of the mobile services has caused a need to expand the mobile service employment opportunities in the Internet portals. Today’s portals, created using the means, offered by software manufacturers, employ exclusively the mobile Internet service, thanks to which the users can see and manage the necessary information and process of the portal at any time and from anywhere. The problem is related with the fact that mobile Internet services are still expensive in Lithuania. Therefore one should look for cheaper ways to reach and manage portal information. In order to solve this problem one can consider the SMS and MMS message sending, suggested by mobile technologies.
Basic aim of the work is to create an entertainment portal, rendering the user both various Internet entertainments (e.g. Internet acquaintances, games), and mobile entertainment (e.g. sending messages, logos, melodies, animations and games for mobile phone) as well as a wide range of mobile services to be used to obtain and to manage the portal information.
In the work I describe: portal evolution, classification and creation measures („BroadVision Portal“, „IBM WebSphere Portal for Multiplatforms v5.x“, „Sun One Portal Server v6.0“, „Red Hat Enterprise Portal Server“, „Microsoft SharePoint® Portal Server 2003“, „ORACLE 9ias Portal“, „PHP:...
