Deconstructing my universal marginalization

Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis is a profoundly personal one. It examines the role of context in creation (authorship) and perception (reading an image) of representation. Born in Sri Lanka during the emergence of one the world's longest lasting civil wars, I never recognized my love and concern for the Island and its ancient history and culture until I traveled to America to pursue a higher education. Ever since, I have constantly found myself in situations where I am regarded as the 'other' or the 'outsider' ; I seem to not fit in completely in this country as well as in my own. In the US I am considered 'eastern' or 'exotic', whereas in my own country, I am considered 'westernized', no longer looked at as a typical Sri Lankan woman. This thesis examines and explores marginalization, orientalism, deconstruction theories, semiotic studies, dialect as well as attire, in the specific context of Graphic Design. / by Fathima Asma Nazim. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2010. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. A cor como espelho da sociedade e da cultura / Color as a mirror of society and culture: a study on the chromatic system of food packaging

Pereira, Carla Patrícia de Araujo 28 March 2012 (has links)
Based on a theoretical referential which included art and design history, semiotics and cultural studies of color, this thesis supports the idea of color as language and cultural construction, observing its use in different systems of signification, in design and, particularly, in packaging design. The work starts from the evolution of visual language of packaging, observed between late 19th century and early 21st century, showing the changes occurred in design as an expression of the different moments of western society and visual culture, and bringing back the historical importance of colors in communication. Secondly, the work reviews the fundamentals of semiotics, transposing them to the approach of the color as a sign, and to the investigation of color language as a system. In order to explain the structural principles of this language, the meanings of colors and chromatic attributes are reviewed through bibliographical research. Through an empirical study, this thesis examines the chromatic language of contemporary packaging design, from a corpus of food packaging commercialized in Brazil. The results showed that the system of significations of color in packaging design leans both on the associative fields generated by the attributes of color -- hue, brightness and saturation -- and on the chromatic and semantic oppositions that such characteristics create. The study approach went beyond the structural analysis, involving simultaneously syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects of color, trying to explain its use as a tool for the diffusion of ideas and values. It was observed that the colors assume visual, iconic, indexical and symbolic functions in the packaging communication. In the symbolic level, the most frequent senses assumed by the colors corresponded to different discourses which guide the contemporary food practices. The research showed that design communicates with other systems of signification and rescues, spreads out and reconstructs the color symbolism to construct images of quality, pureness, welfare, health, ecology and femininity, among others, reflecting ideological and cultural conceptions which have their place in contemporary life.

Here, our claim is the creation of journalistic illustrations is an intelligent act, which demands the use of different cognitive levels as well as political and aesthetic positioning. Besides it also demands the use of a number of expressive resources, which are somewhat, constrained by the demands of the industry. In this research, we analysed the creative process of three Brazilian artists: Carlos Matuck, Orlando Pedroso and Samuel Casal. These three artists were chosen due to their unique way of sealing (or not) with the digital support in pieces of art produced between 1989 and 2007.The analysis of the creative process followed the methods established by the genetic criticism at Semiotic approach, both developed by the Centre of Studies of Genetic Criticism of PUCSP (CECG), coordinated by Cecília Salles. The creative work is understood here in a context of both mobility and relational network. As such, it takes place in multiple spaces, in which a number of forces interact and recreate the environment. The aim of this research is the identification of the specificity of the network that builds and is built by the creative act.Journalistic illustration is a creative act inserted in a network made by industrial constrains, lack of time, relationship with text, technical choices, graphic procedures and a negotiation of what is innovation and what is cliché.So, this research is intended to contribute to the teaching of visual arts in the field of Communication Studies, studying and advocating in favour of the intelligent act on the visual production as well as the legitimacy of this means of expression / O processo de criação de ilustrações de jornais e revistas é o tema desse trabalho, que procura analisar os fatores que singularizam o processo de criação desse tipo de produção visual e sua contextualização no universo editorial.

To analyze its significance and representativeness as a contemporary artistic production deals with such issues as the object of analysis: theme to be historicized and treating them as a source, which subsidizes research through the supporting documentation provided by them. Some questions, coming from our professional activities with students of first semesters of undergraduate course in Advertising search for answers through questionnaires to investigate whether the journal might be used as a strategy for teaching and learning in the classroom. Using issues of the journal as a motivating material, were performed analyzes and interpretations with three groups of discipline Drawing I. The study of Zupi Design Magazine within a relatively short period of existence has privileged themes as: points of convergence between the editorial project and artistic achievements, the coherence between the covers of graphic expression and the speech presented by its authors and the receipt of the journal for their readership. Our theoretical framework is provided by means of dialogue between scholars of Cultural History, which supports us. The preparation of tables allowed a detailed survey of the aspects to which we propose to study: the use of the magazine as a strategic support in Drawing course in Advertising.

Cardoso, Daniel Ribeiro 14 May 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T18:17:08Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Daniel Ribeiro Cardoso.pdf: 11034981 bytes, checksum: da947a544847750d1d681a80845198fc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-05-14 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Drawing of the poiesis: communication of a collective process of creation in architecture is assigned as a domain of the visuality research. As a work related to scientific visualization, it can be compared to the investigations on representation and communication through visual graphic images. The purpose of this thesis is to reflect on issues concerning the processes of generation and the adequate way to represent them. The process of the form development tipology in architecture is adopted as the object of the research. As a proper object of a culture, the type is perceived as an element that serves as a general principle of creation, a supraindividual mechanism needed for the construction of meaning and identity of a society. In that sense, the houses, instantiation of the same logic of creation, are ways that express a collective intelligence. Given the necessary scale for the perception of its evolution, the object was found in the architecture formed between 1890 and 1980, in the region of Cajuais and Mutamba, southern coast of Ceará. In that context, there are some issues concerning the problematic of the thesis to be considered: How to preserve the processes of generation of cultural object? How to apprehend something that is by its nature operative and informative? Moreover, how to represent adequately a poiesis? The answers to these questions are the hypothesis crux of the thesis that considers the grammar of the form development most appropriate sign to represent for the representation of a poiesis. The articulated theories to support the development of the research are distinct. However, the composed network is in a common area in a environment where theoreticians settle the issues of sign and meaning according to the thinking of Charles S Peirce. The theoretical foundation is based on three views: the new General Theory of Systems as defined by Bunge and Vieira, in which it seeks concepts and methodologies adjusting them to the second view; the Genetic Criticism as proposed by Salles that searches general principles of the creation processes; and Semiotic as a basis for the issues of representation and communication processes. Furthermore, it will be considered authors like Chomsky, Prusinkiewics, Stiny, Duarte, among others that point out the grammar as a representation of process in semiotics systems. Finally, it is proposed a sign poiesis appropriate to a system generator of forms that operates with the evolutionary logic found in the object. Therefore, the result of the research is not only a tool that speculates the generation and the visualization of future forms, but it is also a path for the development of Genetic Criticism / Desenho de uma poiesis: comunicação de um processo coletivo de criação na arquitetura insere-se no domínio das pesquisas da visualidade.

[en] THE BRAZIL OF THE FLAG: DESIGN AS AN ELEMENT OF AFFIRMATION OF NATIONAL UNION / [pt] O BRASIL DA BANDEIRA O DESIGN COMO ELEMENTO DE AFIRMAÇÃO DA UNIÃO NACIONAL

FATIMA DE CARVALHO ROCHA 25 November 2003 (has links)
[en] A social phenomenon has become current in Brazil in the past twenty years: the use of items focusing on the Brazilian flag as created by designers. Considering that this kind of appropriation of the Brazilian flag is not allowed by law, its recurrence motivated, in the 90s, a plea for change in this law, still running in the Senate for approval. As a qualitative type of research, the present thesis proposes a search for the social and historical reasons that made this phenomenon to occur. It shows the graphic attributes of the Brazilian flag, which somehow stimulate its use by visual communicators. This research also fosters debates around our national symbols, and reaffirms design as an issue in the Brazilian Social Studies.

Regional airspace design: a structured systems engineering approach

Fulton, Neale Leslie, Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 2002 (has links)
There has been almost fifteen years of political controversy surrounding changes to the rules and procedures by which aircraft conduct their flight within regional Australia. Decisions based on a predominately heuristic (rule of thumb) approach to design have had many adverse consequences for the integrity of the proximity warning function. A sound mathematical model is required to establish this function on a mature engineering foundation. To achieve this, the proximity warning function has been investigated as a hybrid-system. This approach recognises the dual nature of the design: that aircraft dynamics give rise to continuous mathematical models while the communication protocols controlling proximity require discrete mathematical approaches. The blending of each aspect has yielded a deeper insight into the operational limitations and failure modes of this function. The presentation of the thesis follows a design thread through the function. It begins with a description of existing standards and implementations. Risk models are then developed. The pilot interface is recognised as a primary design constraint. Mathematical models are then developed to describe the topology of flow, proximity dynamics, and the scheduling constraints associated with visual, voice, and data-link communications required by the proximity warning function. These analyses show that many aspects of design can be bounded by analytical formulae that bring new robustness to the design and resolve some of the misconceptions arising from the often inaccurate perceptions of present airspace operations. Failure modes, unaccounted for in existing designs are found to actually aggravate failure in the very situations in which the airspace design should be robust and should act to prevent collisions. In particular, there are divergences of performance between the demands required by the system design and the ability of the pilot to deliver such performances. In some cases, these failures may be traced to policy decisions such as service between Instrument Flight Rule and Visual Flight Rule category aircraft. On the basis of the conclusions of this research, a formal engineering review of the proximity warning function is required to assure the containment of the likelihood of mid-air collision for all future operations.

Visual Scientific Communication : The Use of Graphics in Contemporary Doctoral Theses / Visuell akademisk kommunikation : Bruket av illustrationer i moderna doktorsavhandlingar

Steiner, Elisabet January 2008 (has links)
<p>Although we live in a society abundant with images, the subject of illustrations in scientific communication seems to have become a blind spot. The study of scientific communication is an interdisciplinary field, where written and visual language is studied separately from one another. The aim of this master thesis is to break with tradition and look at the use of illustrations, their form and frequency, in a random selection of Swedish contemporary doctoral theses to make an attempt to explain why some scholars do not use illustrations as much as others. The found graphics are discussed in their faculty and departmental context, and the aspects of page design, electronic availability, and publishing tradition are also included in this discussion. By looking at some activities surrounding the author of a doctoral thesis, such as writers’s manuals, computer graphic tools, and the role of librarians, proof was found to support a genre and activity theory, as described by Charles Bazerman. This study presents an overview of illustrations occurring in dissertations in a way that was not done before, opening up for further studies about the form and function of scientific illustrations as important carriers of information.</p> / <p>Fastän vi lever i ett samhälle som är översvämmat av bilder verkar vetenskapliga illustrationer vara ett ämne som förblivit ett slags blind punkt.
