The Passionate Combining Entrepreneurs

Nordström, Carin January 2015 (has links)
Entrepreneurs are portrayed as salient drivers of regional development and for a number of years nascent entrepreneurs have been studied in a large number of countries as part of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor project and the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics. Scholars have devoted much effort to investigating factors that determine how individuals engage in entrepreneurial activities, with most of the discussion limited to business start-ups. However, since this type of project does not follow identical nascent entrepreneurs over time, limited knowledge exists about their development and whether they stay in this nascent phase for a long time. In practice, it is common for entrepreneurs to run a business and at the same time work in wage work, so-called combining entrepreneurs. In Sweden, almost half of all business owners combine wage work with a business. However, not all combining entrepreneurs will eventually decide to leave the wage work and invest fully in the business. Consequently, much research has focused on the first step of entering entrepreneurship full time, but less has focused on the second step, the transition from the combining phase to full-time self-employment. The aim of this thesis is therefore to contribute to the theory of entrepreneurship by gaining a deeper understanding of combining entrepreneurs and their motives and intentions.   In the context of combining entrepreneurs, the theory of identity, resources and choice overload has been used to examine how entrepreneurs’ age (when starting the business), entrepreneurial tenure (the length of engagement in the side-business), hours spent (weekly involvement in the side-business), involvement in entrepreneurial teams (leading the business with one or more partners) and involvement in networks (business networks) influence their passion for engaging in entrepreneurship while sustaining wage work. Different categories of combining entrepreneurs and their intentions have also been examined.   A survey was administered to 1457 entrepreneurs within the creative sector in two counties in Sweden (Gävleborgs County and Jämtlands County). Since there were no separate mailing lists to only combining entrepreneurs, the survey was sent to all entrepreneurs within the chosen industry and counties. The total response rate was 33.5 percent and of them 57.6 percent combined, yielding 262 combining entrepreneurs who answered the questionnaire. The survey was then followed up with eight focus group interviews and two single interviews to validate the answers from the questionnaire.   The results indicate three types of combining entrepreneurs: nascent – with the intention to leave the combining phase for a transition into full-time self-employment, lifestyle – with the intention to stay in the combining phase, and occasional – with the intention to leave the combining phase for full-time wage work and close down the business. Transitioning fully to self-employment increases with the individual’s age. Also, a positive interactive effect exists with involvement in entrepreneurial networks. The results also indicate that the ability to work with something one is passionate about is the top motive for combining wage work with a side-business. Passion is also more likely to be the main motive behind the combining form among individuals who are older at business start-up, but passion is less likely to be the main motive behind the combining form among individuals who spend more time on the business. The longer the individual has had the side-business, the less likely passion is the main motive behind the combining form, and passion is less likely to be the main motive among those who are part of an entrepreneurial team.

Turismo e expansão de domicílios particulares de uso ocasional no litoral sudeste do Brasil / Tourism and expansion of occasional use of private households located in the southeastern coast of Brazil

Sabino, André Luiz 22 February 2013 (has links)
As territorial fluidity is extended, the contemporary acceleration reinvented the coastal line and increased the possibilities for capital reproduction, concerning to the actions and to the building of new objects. The State took an active role, ruling the use of the territory and building the necessary infrastructure in order to enlarge and intensify the production of coastal urban space. On a national scale, it is notorious the concentration of private households for occasional use on the coast, especially in the Southeast and South regions, however, the variation above the national average toward the Northeast, Midwest and North, seeks to consolidate a new front of expansion of this phenomenon in the country, indicating a change in land use. In this thesis, we take the coast of southeastern Brazil as an analytical approach to critically reflect on the repercussions of the spatial expansion of private households for occasional use in the country. As a general objective, we analyze the spatial implications of this social, cultural and economic practice and its participation in the production of space for tourist and recreational use. Searching for local specific aspects on the spatial distribution of private households for occasional use, we have chosen three cities, one in each coastal state in the Southeast: Piúma, in the state of Espírito Santo, Mangaratiba, in Rio de Janeiro state, and Ilha Comprida, in São Paulo state, in order to verticalize our analysis. So, we try to think, methodologically speaking, about the territorial dimension of private households for occasional use from different geographical scales (national, macro-regional and local). This perspective allowed us to reach some conclusions among which we highlight the identification of conflicts and contradictions that reveal, in our point of view, an \"urbanization without urbanity.\"

An approach to potential evaluation of a contactless energy supply infrastructure for occasional recharging in production related, non-automated material handling

Fekete, P. L. January 2017 (has links)
Significant advances have been made in the research and development of electric vehicles (EV’s). Along with the major challenge of energy storage, being also addressed is the efficient design of system energy transfer and consumption. This has had the effect of fundamentally changing perspectives across the mobility and transportation sector. Applied predominantly to road-going vehicles, the industrial context of non-road Electric Vehicles (nrEV’s) and specifically the use of manned electric forklift trucks integrated within the production related materials handling system has, to-date, received far less attention. The overarching aim of this research is to examine the impact and potential for the use of contactless occasional recharging of nrEV’s integrated within a manufacturing line, recognising the need to balance the (sometimes competing) demands of delivering sustainable production while exercising environmental responsibility. Meeting the objectives of this research resulted in the development of a location allocation model for electric charging station determination based on a fundamental understanding of the nature and quality of process inherent key performance indicators (KPI’s) as well as comprehensive process and energy monitoring while considering both Lean and Green Management perspectives. The integration of the generated knowledge and information into a generally valid simulation tool for occasional charging system implementation allows to more thoroughly investigate the impact from occasional charging to overall efficiency and sustainability to be realised. An investigation into relevant literature identified the need for specifically generated energy consumption data and confirmed the need for an energy optimisation model specific to the area of production related materials handling. Empirical data collected from repeated standardised materials handling operations within a selected production related materials handling environment resulted in the development of the Standard Energy Consumption Activity tool (SECA). Further work within this pilot study confirmed the tool as capable of generating reliable and valid data and confirmed the SECA tool as a generally applicable benchmark for energy consumption determination in material handling based on fractional process functions. Integrating this approach into a comprehensive process analysis and charging infrastructure optimisation resulted in the development of an Excel-based simulation model. The (Occasional Charging Station Location Model) OCSLM is based upon Maximal Covering Location Modelling and an endogenous covering distance definition in order to simulate process related potentials and optimal charging system implementation allocations, the target being to increase vehicles usable battery energy. A comprehensive case study based upon six individual and one combined data set confirmed the general and wider applicability of the OCSLM model while the application of the model provides a set of novel results. The application demonstrated a theoretical increase in usable battery energy of between 40% and 60% and within the same case study the impact of technology implementation identified that a reduction in battery and system cost of between 5% and 45% can be realised. However, the use of contactless power transfer resulted in an increase in CO2 emissions of up to 6.89% revealing a negative impact to overall ecology from the use of this energy transfer system. Depending on the availability of fast connecting, contact based energy transmission systems, the approach and results of OCSLM have shown to be directly applicable to contact based systems with resulting CO2 emissions decreasing by 0.94% at an energy transfer efficiency of 96%. Further novelty, of benefit to both academic and industry practice, was realised through the framework and information of the research with the provision of SECA as a process function-based and generally applicable energy consumption standard, OCSLM as a Maximal Covering Location Modell with a focus on occasional charging based on an endogenous covering distance and integrating detailed energy and process monitoring into electric charging station allocation, and the methodology for the application of this approach for fast connecting contactless and contact charging models and cases.

Bättre administration för en effektivare hemtjänst : En undersökning av den administrativa sidan av nyckelfri hemtjänst / Better administration for a more effective home care service : Understanding the administrative side of digital key management

Herkevall, Jonas January 2019 (has links)
What we are witnessing today is an increasingly older population. This change in demographics will drastically change the demands of elder care and especially home care services to ensure that more people will be able to stay at home for larger parts of their lives. In addition, statistical projections suggest a critical lack of manpower in home care services in the coming decade, and an increasing amount of faith is put into technical and digital solutions to streamline the organizations. On behalf of Phoniro, one of the largest distributors of welfare technologies for elder care in Sweden, this thesis has investigated how the administrative work attending to digital key management can be improved and streamlined with an updated interface. Through use of an online survey and semi structured interviews a more comprehensive understanding of the users working with the administrative system Phoniro Care have been acquired. The findings have been modelled in user stories meant to guide future design work in the development of Phoniro Care. The results indicate the need for a design that supports multiple user types and better tools for overviewing the information available in the system. Furthermore, the differences in organizational structure between different organizations implementing digital key management raises questions regarding digitization competences in public sector organizations and understanding the effect of implementing new digital tools. In turn, that raises questions regarding a possible future need for adaptation for companies like Phoniro in handling an increasing digital competence in the organizations that constitutes their clients.

Dygdens förvandlingar : Begreppet dygd i tillfällestryck till handelsmän före 1780 / Transformations of virtue : The concept of virtue in printed occasional poetry addressed to merchants before 1780

Lindqvist, Janne January 2002 (has links)
This dissertation deals with how the concept of virtue (dygd) is used in Swedish occasional poetry addressed to merchants before 1780. Occasional poetry was the major kind of literature in Sweden in the seventeenth and the eighteenth century, and usually addressed to the nobility and other dominant groups. As a part of the elites’ conspicuous consumption, and mainly aimed to demonstrate the addressees’ virtue, it played an important role in legitimising the social and political dominance of the elite. Merchandise, however, was regarded with moral suspicion. The main purpose of the thesis is to study the argumentative strategies the poets use to honour merchants, and to determine in what ethical traditions they have found the arguments to back up their reasoning. It is thereby possible to detect subtle changes in how they use the concept of virtue. These strategies and arguments are seen from a rhetorical point of view; the poets’ main purpose was to praise the tradesmen persuasively. The dissertation consists of three parts, dealing with, respectively, the period before 1650, the years 1670–1680 and the period 1770–1780. Each part is divided into three chapters: a brief presentation of the main ethical discussion of the period, a concise examination of the occasional poetry written for groups other than merchants, and an analysis of the argumentative strategies used in honouring tradesmen. The earliest merchant prints are constructed as defences rather than actual complimentary poems. Whereas the poems written for other addressees mainly make use of an Aristotelian concept of virtue, focusing on the services done for society and on the honour that follows from this, the merchant poems take a Lutheran law conception of ethics as their starting point. The key point is to claim that the merchant in question has not broken the Ten Commandments, or any other law belonging to man. Neither has he ever done any harm to his neighbours. In the 1670’s, this argumentative strategy is still abundant, but the poets also claim that the merchants have contributed to society, either through Christian charity or, with an allusion to mercantilism, by always trading with the aim of enriching their fatherland. In some cases, economic success in itself is regarded as a ground for honouring the merchant, the claim being that this was necessary for his charity, or by reference to the Lutheran ethics of calling or vocation. A main point is that the poets sometimes use the word virtue to describe these qualities, thereby in effect widening the concept itself. In the 1770’s, all earlier argumentative strategies are still used by the poets. In some cases, however, the texts consist in an attack on the Aristotelian concept of virtue. The poets argue that virtue is an inner, almost invisible quality having nothing to do with performing an occupation or belonging to a special social stratum. Instead they focus on sincerity as a quality essential to real virtue and as an important virtue in itself, thereby also claiming that virtue and glory could and should be separated.

Construire du sens autour d’une activité occasionnelle de formation : le cas des ingénieurs dans les transferts de technologie / Constructing Meaning from an Occasional Training Activity : the Case of Engineers Involved in Technology Transfers

Coadour, Damien 27 November 2015 (has links)
Technology transfers are contracts related to the sale of large, complex systems (in the fields of transport, energy-supply, defence, etc.) that combine the delivery of material goods and a variety of immaterial products such as documentation, technical assistance and training. Training nowadays is a key feature in such high-end contracts and the engineers in charge of these transfers in large companies are becoming trainers. However, the sale of technology comes with various tensions that develop into dilemmas for the trainer. On the one hand, an industrial dilemma arises from the opposition between the sale of technology and the protection of that same technology. On the other hand, a professional dilemma results from the clash between two functions: that of the trainer and that of the engineer. To overcome these difficulties, engineers construct a meaning of their own, in line with the perceived purpose of their action. Based on the interviews conducted, different constructions of meaning are identified and show significant heterogeneity in the responses of the engineers faced with this occasional training mission. These responses lead to individual redefinitions of the aims of the training scheme, as well as of the technology transfer contracts. Providing guidance in the construction of an ethos of the occasional trainer in the domain of technology transfers provides the opportunity for an original exploration of an activity that is only starting to attract the academic attention it deserves.

Le Chœur des justiciables : contrôles, libertés et usages judiciaires de la poésie à la Renaissance (France, 1500-1560) / The Choir of Defendants : censorship, Freedom and Legal Poetry in the Renaissance (France, 1500-1560)

Bayrou, André 20 January 2018 (has links)
In XVIth century France the legal system hunts down heresy among the writers and printers attracted by the Reformation. Some well-known examples are the repetitive legal actions against Clément Marot and the execution of Étienne Dolet, burned at the stake in 1546. But this repressive policy was not limited to only these sadly famous cases, nor to matters of religious faith. Many other poets, famous and unknown, are put on trial because of their religious, satirical, and, in a pair of isolated cases, even obscene writings. Moreover the various actors implicated in the making of the book confront each other in some cases concerning literary ownership. This study aims to understand how such legal constraints influenced the writing of poetry in the Renaissance. The first steps are to reconstruct the process in which poetic texts were censored, from the identification of the suspicious text to the interrogation of the poet, including the licensing of the book and the investigation of satirical verses posted at town intersections. This is the system of control which poets stand up against, attempting to defend their freedom of speech, –the right to write satire and to sing their religious beliefs, the freedom to play with the codes of erotic poetry. In fact, the idea of freedom of speech is not so foreign to them as we could think, as they give political meaning to the notion of « license », which ordinarily justifies the excentricities of poetic language. Through their writing, poets try to advance their cause and to reappropriate their experience of the law : these specific goals make legal poetry a genre of its own, both in dealing with the reality and in recreating the events in an unrealistic manner.

Česká jednotlivě vydaná sváteční a příležitostná kázání konce 17. a prvních dvou třetin 18. století / Individually Published Czech Festive and Occasional Preachings of the End of the 17th and the First Two Thirds of the 18th Century

Sládek, Miloš January 2013 (has links)
Individually Published Czech Festive and Occasional Preachings of the End of the 17th and the First Two Thirds of the 18th Century Miloš Sládek The thesis concentrates on the area of festive and occasional homiletics in Bohemia after the Battle of White Mountain. Since the end of the 17th century, homiletics had represented the Czech leading literary genre with extraordinary influence on the masses. This influence was even strenghtened when printed preachings gradually became popular reading. The main focus of the thesis is on the questions of preparation of preaching, problematics of preaching handbooks, relationship of a preacher and his listeners, as well as the area of Classicist and conceptual preaching. The Baroque concept is described in connections with the aspect of growing author's self-esteem at that time. Editions of chosen sixteen preachings with introductions are added to demonstrate (or relativise) the conclusions of the first part of the thesis. Festive preaching in Bohemia was essentially influenced by legends, German Catholic preaching and myths and folk-tales. Emphasis on Christian morality is typical for Sunday preaching, however, it also appears in festive preachings. The influence of festive and occasional preaching of the end of the 17th and the first half of the 18th century on...
