A re-assessment of text-image relationships in Christine de Pizan's didactic works

Although the works of Christine de Pizan have been of interest to scholars for some time, technological advances and initiatives to make digital copies of manuscripts available online have only recently enabled close comparisons between the visual programmes of her works to be made. This thesis demonstrates that detail usually considered secondary or 'paratextual' in Christine's manuscripts actually formed a carefully-constructed part of the work itself that Christine explicitly asks her audience to read. Through 'reading' the text and image simultaneously, the visual programme proves to comprise additional layers of meaning that were woven into her didactic works. These meanings can serve to supplement the educational and moral aims of the works, or, conversely, can be inconsistent with the message conveyed in the text, leading the reader-viewer to contemplate further on the matters presented and form their own opinions on them. Sometimes, meaning is created by intervisual connections with pre-existing iconography, such that viewers may be creating associations between the miniatures seen in Christine's manuscripts and other imagery, leading them to make certain associations - this is notably the case in author-portraits of Christine. As manuscripts prepared under the author's supervision came to be copied, changes were made to the iconographic programmes, testifying to and enabling different types of readings to take place. The findings of this thesis have implications for editorial practices of medieval works in general, as these tend to circulate in editions without the visual programme, providing modern readers with only a partial view of the complete work.

HERMENEUTICS IN SIMULATED ENVIRONMENTS: THE LITERARY QUALITY OF DIGITAL ARTIFACTS

The topic of video games is expansive, encompassing numerous domains that have yet to be thoroughly examined within a scholarly context. Modern games, especially those in the adventure and role-playing genres, are oftentimes heavily laden with text, and therefore serve as excellent subjects when formulating hermeneutical models for simulated virtual contexts. Furthermore, many games belong under the umbrella of literary studies due to their reliance upon text to forge interactive, fictional narratives. While this means many games possess qualities that render them germane to academics within the sphere of English studies, they remain neglected outliers due to manifold factors, ranging from outmoded biases against the medium, to a lack of established evaluative methodologies. As a result, the field is largely bereft of consensus strategies for engaging digital works featuring literary exposition and dialogue in the form of on-screen text; however, existing theories, including more abstruse ones relating to ergodic literature, hypertext and cybertext, provide a foundation on which to construct new modalities for assessing texts that exist within virtual environs. Research indicates that audience experiences in text-driven games are markedly different than those offered by analog texts due to their interactivity and non-linearity, thus reinforcing the need for the expansion of existing models. Of additional concern, analyses of modern text-oriented games prefigure some important implications for the areas of pedagogy and textual information conveyance in general. These considerations all coalesce to illustrate the exigency for a new or updated theory for understanding and interpreting text in digital substrates, ultimately allowing for inchoate and emergent art facilitated by technology to be recognized as academically relevant.

Choosing audiobooks : Storytel users’ selection of audiobooks

The main objective for this study was to explore Storytel users’ selection of audiobooks to examine what search strategies and relevance aspects emerge in the relation to a digital book streaming service mobile application, and to examine how this application aids and influences its users in the search and selection of audiobooks. With the help of previous research on book selection and the concepts of search strategies and tactics, as well as the user-centered perspective on relevance and the concept of the digital paratext, five interviews with audiobook readers were analysed. The two major search approaches were known item search and browsing. The major difference compared to previous research on book selection was the new, additional component of the performing narrator. The narrator did not provide any new relevance aspects to the already identified in earlier studies, but rather, proved to be a component spread out on the already identified relevance aspects. Compared to previous research, the author of this study would, however, like to emphasis the relevance aspect of variation. The fact emerged that the readers used the book(s) read previously as a reference, but not necessarily as something they wanted more of or something similar to, but as something they liked something different from. In this desire for variation, the Storytel’s browsing and recommendations’ functions seemed to fall short and the context of the social world outside the app broke in as a helpful aspect of the audiobook selection.

<p>This thesis approaches the work of Nathaniel Hawthorne from a narratological paradigm, arguing that metafiction is one of the primary elements of Hawthorne’s style and literary project as a Romantic author. Metafiction informs his themes, characters and aesthetics as Hawthorne is majorly concerned with bridging the gap between author and reader, text and physical book, and ultimately, the imaginary and the real. Hawthorne is incessant in his assertions about his work being authored works of fiction, and becomes concerned about readers properly receiving his fiction as authored literary surface. Engaging with and incorporating the work of major literary theorists such as Frye, Booth, Genette and Todorov—as well as new, emergent critics of Hawthorne—this study carefully examines his major novels, a number of his tales and sketches, and his paratextual materials. Metafiction is rarely considered in much of the scholarship discussing Hawthorne’s style, and is a convenient way of unifying many aspects of his style that have been previously fractured, including the distance and delicacy of his narration and voice, his experiments in genre, and his techniques of framing and diegesis.</p> / Master of Arts (MA)

Le phénomène de l'édition de scénarios cinématographiques dans l'espace éditorial québécois

Depuis quelques décennies, les études sur le scénario de film n'ont cessé d'augmenter. Pourtant, très peu de théoriciens et d'historiens se sont intéressés à la publication de scénarios. Le but de ce mémoire est de bien comprendre comment s'articule et se développe le phénomène de l'édition de scénarios cinématographiques dans l'espace éditorial québécois. Par « édition de scénarios cinématographiques », nous entendons tous textes ayant été écrits en vue d'une réalisation filmique et possédant un code ISBN. Dans le but de dresser un meilleur portrait du phénomène de cette édition, nous traiterons aussi de publications qui se rattachent de près ou de loin à l'édition de scénarios cinématographiques, comme la novellisation et la transcription de film. De manière à n'omettre aucune publication et à bien identifier chacune d'elles, nous avons élaboré une typologie qui se compose de quatre types de publication : la novellisation, la transcription du film, le scénario cinématographique publié et le scénario fictif. / During the last two decades, studies on the screenplay have increased greatly. However, very few theoreticians and historians studied the process of publication of screenplays. The purpose of this dissertation is to understand how the publication of screenplays has developed in Quebec in the last hundred years and write it’s history. By « publication of screenplays », we mean all texts written with the intention of permitting a film. The texts studied here have to have a ISBN code. Considering a relatively small number of screenplays have been published, this dissertation also includes an inventory and analysis of publications that are written in relationship to a film such as novelizations and transcriptions of films. The different types of texts have been identified and classified according to a typology which is made up of four types of publications : the novelization, the transcription of the film, the published screenplay and the fictitious screenplay.

Le paratexte et la traduction du Popol Vuh de l’abbé Brasseur de Bourbourg

Le Popol Vuh, récit historique du peuple maya quiché, a été traduit des dizaines de fois. Jusqu’au milieu du 20e siècle, bon nombre de ces traductions se fondaient sur la version réalisée en 1861 par Brasseur de Bourbourg, un missionnaire français. Pour souligner le travail du traducteur, nous avons étudié sa traduction non pas d’un point de vue comparatif des deux textes, mais du point de vue du paratexte, c’est-à-dire ce qui entoure le texte (page de titre, préface, notes, illustrations, etc.). Pour ce faire, nous avons dressé le cadre théorique du paratexte à l’appui des écrits de Genette et de Lane, puis nous l’avons appliqué à celui de la traduction du Popol Vuh de Brasseur de Bourbourg. D’une taille colossale, ce paratexte nous renseigne sur ce qui a motivé le travail du traducteur et sur ce qu’il a fait. L’étude de son avant-propos nous indique clairement que son but est de faire connaître la culture des Amériques sous un jour nouveau, et le Popol Vuh est pour lui l’exemple parfait d’une richesse littéraire, historique et culturelle jusque-là largement ignorée. Cette partie du paratexte de Brasseur de Bourbourg nous prépare à la lecture, alors que les nombreuses notes de bas de page nous guident pendant celle-ci. Force est toutefois d’admettre que le paratexte de cet ouvrage est si imposant qu’il porte ombrage à la traduction. Bref, l’étude du paratexte nous amène à aborder la traduction de Brasseur de Bourbourg d’un oeil critique, en fonction de ce que nous dit le paratexte. La lecture du paratexte et la connaissance de ses tenants et aboutissants devraient donc faire d’un simple lecteur un véritable lecteur averti, qu’il s’agisse d’une traduction ou de tout autre texte. / The Popol Vuh is a historical tale of the Maya Quiché people which has been translated many times. Until the mid 20th century, many of those translations were based on Brasseur de Bourbourg’s version published in 1861. In order to situate the translator’s work, we approached his translation from the perspective of paratext, i.e. what ccompanies the text (title page, preface, footnotes, illustrations, etc.), rather than comparing the source text to the translation. In order to do so, we have established the paratext’s theoretical framework, based on the works published by Genette and Lane, and we have applied it to Brasseur de Bourbourg’s translation of the Popol Vuh. Brasseur de Bourbourg’s paratext is colossal; it allows us to understand what motivated his work and what he has done. The study of the translator’s preface clearly demonstrates that his goal was to present the culture of the Americas from a different standpoint, and the Popol Vuh is, for him, the perfect example of a rich literary, historical and cultural heritage that has long been overlooked. The preface to the translation prepares the reader to read the text, whereas the many footnotes guide him when he’s reading the translation. Nevertheless, the amount of paratext is so imposing that it overshadows the actual translation. In short, paratext analysis allows us to look critically and advisedly at Brasseur de Bourbourg’s translation, with a good knowledge of what paratext actually tells us. Therefore, reading the paratext and being aware of its meaning should transform a simple reader into a well-informed and critical reader, whether it is a translation or any other kind of document.

Suzanne Lilar : configurations d'une image auctoriale

Cette thèse pose la question du positionnement identitaire difficile qui marque la trajectoire littéraire de l’écrivaine belge Suzanne Lilar (1901-1992). Le tiraillement vécu par l’écrivaine entre sa vocation artistique et la nécessité de préserver une image de soi conforme aux normes du milieu social dans lequel elle s’inscrit se reflète dans les scénographies construites par ses œuvres littéraires, mais également dans son discours réflexif et paratextuel ainsi que dans la manière dont son œuvre est accueilli par la presse de l’époque. Le premier volet de cette analyse s’attache à circonscrire la position occupée par Suzanne Lilar sur la scène littéraire belge, dont la proximité avec le centre parisien a toujours entretenu la menace de l’assimilation, et sur la scène de l’écriture féminine. Le deuxième volet de cette thèse porte sur l’analyse des scénographies construites par les textes de fiction et les textes à tendance autobiographique de Suzanne Lilar. Les doubles scénographies que donnent à lire ces œuvres montrent que la démarche esthétique de Suzanne Lilar, sous-tendue par le besoin de légitimation de son entreprise, est basée principalement sur la multiplication des perspectives et des moyens d’expression. Le dédoublement de la scène énonciative des récits, la mise en abyme de la figure auctoriale ainsi que le travail d’autoréécriture témoignent de la nécessité de se positionner dans le champ littéraire, mais également de la méfiance de l’écrivaine envers l’écriture littéraire. Le troisième volet de cette recherche analyse l’éthos et la posture que Lilar construit à l’aide du discours réflexif et paratextuel par lequel elle assoit sa légitimité sur la scène littéraire et sociale. Enfin, la dernière partie de cette thèse capte les échos de l’œuvre de Lilar dans la presse de son temps. L’image de l’auteure construite par les médias permet de placer Lilar au sein de l’institution et du champ littéraire, mais également au sein du groupe social dans lequel elle s’inscrit. L’accueil réservé à l’écrivaine par la presse de son époque semble suivre les fluctuations de la posture construite par l’écrivaine elle-même. Cela confirme l’hypothèse selon laquelle Lilar est une auteure qui a éprouvé de la difficulté à assumer pleinement son rôle. Le positionnement en porte-à-faux – dont témoigne la figure du trompe-l’œil qui définit sa poétique – semble avoir représenté, pour Lilar, la seule manière d’assumer l’incontournable paratopie créatrice. / This thesis investigates the difficult positioning of identity in Belgian writer Suzanne Lilar's literary trajectory. The conflict between the writer's art and her need to project an image consistent with her environment is reflected not only in the set-pieces of her literary works, but also in her essays and paratext, and in the way her works were received by the press of the day. The first part of the analysis describes Lilar's position in Belgian literary circles, whose proximity to the mainstream was always threatened by assimilation, and within feminist writings. The second part analyzes the storylines in her fictional and more biographical works. The parallel viewpoints in these works demonstrate that Lilar's aesthetic approach, which is based on the need to legitimize her enterprise, is based mainly on multiple perspectives and forms of expression. The duplication of the plot line in her stories, the mise en abyme of the author's voice, and the constant rewriting illustrate her need to make a place for herself in the literary landscape, but also her mistrust of literary writing. The third part of this research analyzes the ethos and position Lilar constructs through her essays and paratext, upon which she bases her literary and social legitimacy. The final part of the thesis reports on how Lilar's work was received in its day. The image of Lilar propounded by the media positioned her within the literary establishment and also within her own chosen social stratum. The press of the time viewed her as she variously presented herself. This corroborates the hypothesis that Lilar had trouble in fully assuming her role as a writer. Her presentation of herself as being out of step with society − in the trompe-l'oeil manner of her poetics − appears to have been the only way for Lilar to shoulder the displacement essential to her creative work.

Peter Pan contre le héros victorien : la poétique du recyclage dans le Cycle de Kraven de Xavier Mauméjean

Le Cycle de Kraven de Xavier Mauméjean met en place un réseau référentiel qui repose sur le recyclage systématique d’éléments historiques et littéraires. Afin de bien saisir le fonctionnement de ce cycle narratif, il importe de se pencher sur cette dynamique référentielle exacerbée relevant d’une poétique du recyclage (au sens de réutilisation) qui se manifeste par l’emprunt de nombreux référents historiques et littéraires, que le récit modifie à divers degrés. Au moyen de la notion de recyclage, des travaux sur la récupération de l’Histoire par l’uchronie et d’études sur le steampunk, esthétique dont relève le Cycle de Kraven, ce mémoire examine les effets de ce recyclage sur le fonctionnement du récit, mais aussi sur le lecteur. En effet, par un imposant mélange de références authentiques et fictives, le Cycle de Kraven cherche à mystifier le lecteur qui se trouve au centre d’un fourmillement intertextuel brouillant les frontières entre Histoire et fiction. Une réflexion sur le paratexte vient compléter l’analyse du Cycle de Kraven, puisque préface, notes en bas de page, liste de livres et bon de commande contribuent grandement à la création d’un effet de mystification. / Cycle de Kraven, from French author Xavier Mauméjean, establishes a referential network based on a systematic recycling of historical and literary elements. In order to fully understand how this narrative cycle works, one needs to look into these exacerbated referential dynamics which depends on a poetics of recycling. This manifests itself through the borrowing of multiple historical and literary referents, modified at various levels throughout the story. Through the notion of recycling, works on the recovery of history through uchrony and studies on the steampunk genre – being Kraven's primary aesthetic – this dissertation looks into the effects this recycling has on the story's working, as well as on the reader himself. Indeed, through its impressive blending of genuine and fictional references, Cycle de Kraven bemuses the reader who finds himself or herself exploring a intertextual universe where history and fiction may hardly be differed from one another. A study on the paratext concludes this analysis of Cycle de Kraven since elements such as the preface, the footnotes and the purchase order form contribute to the befuddlement of readers.
