Exploring positive psychological strengths in employees attending EAP in the public service: a qualitative study

Ndhlovu, Mojalefa James 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore and highlight positive psychological strengths that are required and, to a lesser extent, negative psychological factors that are to be eliminated in employees attending EAP in the public service in order to make the EAP beneficial and successful. EAPs in the public service have not been as successful as expected because employees drop-out prematurely and/or benefit minimally from attending their sessions. Through the use of a qualitative research approach, this study explored positive psychological strengths that played a significant role in assisting employees attending EAP to achieve their health goals. Research data was collected through the narratives and in-depth interviews from eight participants, who shared their EAP experiences with the researcher. The collected data was analysed through the use of content analysis and positive psychological strengths in the form of themes emerged. The themes were compared with the framework of positive psychology, which is known as the VIA classification system of strengths and virtues framework, in order to determine alignment or compatibility with it. In addition, a few negative emotions were also reported as having been experienced by the participants while attending EAP. The results of this study indicate that certain positive psychological strengths possessed by employees while attending EAP contributed significantly in making them benefit from their EAP consultations. Although a few negative emotions were also reported as having being present during the EAP consultation, they did not affect the progression and success of the EAP. An EAP intervention model is recommended herein for future use, in order to facilitate the success of EAP sessions. / Psychology / D. Litt. et Phil. (Psychology)

Michalová, Zdeňka January 2011 (has links)
Zdeňka Michalová Psychologické aspekty individualizace přístupu k žákům se specifickými poruchami učení Individualization of Approach to Learnes with Specific Learning Disabilities and It's Psychological Aspects Annotation This thesis deals with theoretical and practical knowledge and skills of teachers in primary schools for specific learning disabilities. It focuses mainly on mapping the level of teachers' approach to integrated learners with this disorder. It is trying to grasp the extent to which teachers meet the psychological aspects of individual approach to these learners in inclusive environment of a primary school compared with integrated learners with other disabilities. The theoretical part summarises basic information on education, integration and education system in the Czech Republic. It deals with specific learning disabilities and attempts to apply the findings from positive psychology on individual approach to individuals with SLD. The empirical part analyses and compares the quantitative survey of knowledge level of teachers at lower and higher levels of primary schools about SLD. Furthermore, it examines their knowledge of appropriate procedures for working with learners with SLD and ability to apply it in practice to psychologically support of these learners. It partially compares...

From crisis to awakening: an exploration of midlife experiences from a positive psychology perspective

Niehaus, Louisa 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English / The purpose of this study was to gain a richer understanding of midlife experiences. Midlife is stereotypically viewed as a crisis and is one of the least studied, most illdefined stages in life, yet it’s one of the most significant stages. The epistemological framework for this study is post modernism, which allows for this study to document the transitions from crisis at midlife, as seen through the lens of Positive Psychology. This study was exploratory in nature and applied a qualitative ethnographic methodology. Six participants were interviewed from an ethnographic perspective, in an endeavour to allow each participant accordant ontological breadth and flexibility within their respective social and ideological contexts. The researcher’s own social context also adding nuance to the interpretation of data. This interpretation allows for the inclusion of hope, wisdom, creativity, future mindedness, courage, spirituality, responsibility and perseverance. Thematic analysis of these participants’ narratives supports the psychological research which suggests that challenges are associated with midlife. Thematic analysis revealed challenges associated with midlife such as feelings of disillusionment, regret and dissatisfaction; feelings of loneliness, rejection and isolation as well as confusion about the way forward; seeking a meaningful existence and connection as well as achievement. Some participants, however, are in denial of the existence or their experience of midlife and associated challenges, whereas others describe midlife as a transition phase — a crossroads, a wake-up call and time for reassessment Although midlife can be a difficult transitional period, Positive Psychology can help individuals identify and build the necessary resources and coping strategies to prevent a transition turning into a crisis. It was shown that most participants in this research displayed a mindset and attitude open to a Positive Psychology paradigm to accumulate the necessary resources and coping strategies to prevent a midlife transition from becoming a midlife crisis. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

No. of bitstreams: 1 MARCIA CALIXTO DOS SANTOS.pdf: 2558606 bytes, checksum: dd8a775a336c24a17d377133c9fecc41 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-02-23 / Optimism is a psychological characteristic to achieve satisfactory goals and outcomes in different areas of life. Due to the importance of this construct and the theoretical gaps regarding its evaluation in national level, the objectives of this research were to develop and validate an optimism scale for adults. Three studies were carried out: the first investigated evidence of validity based on content, through the semantic analysis, and judges analysis; the second verified evidence of validity based on internal structure, through exploratory factor analysis (scree plot and parallel analyzes) and reliability (Cronbach's alpha); and the third evaluated validity evidence based on relations to external variables (Pearson correlation), considering validated instruments to measure optimism, self-esteem and locus of control. The second and third studies were based on data from 555 participants, selected for convenience, aged 18 to 77 years (M = 33.6, SD = 11.5), most of them women (65.4%). The semantic analysis and the judges analysis indicated evidence of validity based on content. Exploratory factorial analysis indicated a two factor solution (Factor 1 - Persistent Efficacy and Factor 2 - Expectations), which explained 47.3% of the data variance. Pearson's correlation showed significant positive associations between the total scores of the Optimism scale for adults and the scales of optimism, self-esteem and locus of control, indicating evidence of convergent validity. Significant gender differences were observed only in Factor 1 - Persistent Efficacy, which men presented higher mean values, and significant age differences also in relation to this factor, with participants above 36 years old presenting higher scores. It was concluded that the analyzed scale presents evidence of validity based in content, in internal structure, in comparison with external criterion, as well as reliability.
