Management of technology in the process industries:  Matching market and machine

Samuelsson, Peter January 2017 (has links)
The process industries span multiple industrial sectors and constitute a substantial part of the entire manufacturing industry. Since companies belonging to this family of industries are often very asset intensive, their ability to respond to changes is often limited in the short term. The adaptation of the capabilities of existing processes, and conversely finding products and market segments to match the production system capabilities, are an important part of product- and market development activities in the process industry. The importance to companies in the process industry of having a well-articulated manufacturing strategy congruent with the business strategy is second to none. However, to facilitate manufacturing strategy developments, it is essential to start with an improved characterization and understanding of the material transformation system. To that end an extensive set of variables was developed and related measures and scales were defined. The resulting configuration model, focusing on company generic process capabilities in the process industries, is to be regarded as a conceptual taxonomy and as a proposition available for further testing. The usability of the model was subsequently assessed using “mini-cases” in the forestry industry, where the respondents confirmed that the company’s overall strategy could benefit from this kind of platform as a possible avenue to follow. The model was deployed as an instrument in the profiling of company material transformation systems to facilitate the further development of companies' functional and business strategies. The use of company-generic production capabilities was studied in three case companies representing the mineral, food and steel industries. The model was found by the respondents to be usable as a knowledge platform to develop production strategies. In the final analysis of the research results, a new concept emerged called “production capability configuration": A process-industrial company’s alignment of its generic production capabilities in the areas of raw materials, process technology and products to improve the consistency among the variable elements that define operations and improve the congruence between operations and its environment. From the perspective of value creation and capture, firms must be able to manufacture products in a competitive cost structure within the framework of a proper business model. By using the configuration model, the relationship between manufacturing and innovation activities has been studied in the previously mentioned three case studies. In many cases the gap in capability appears as a limitation in the production system, requiring development efforts and sometimes investments to overcome. This is illustrated with two examples from the steel industry, where development efforts of the production system capabilities are initiated to better match the market demands. One example is the increase the volume- and product flexibility of an existing stainless steel melt shop, resulting in a proposed oblong Argon Oxygen Decarburisation (AOD) converter configuration that was subsequently verified using water modelling. The second example is from a carbon steel mill, where the target was to increase the raw material- and volume flexibility of another melt shop, by modifying the capabilities of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). Enabling EAF technologies are further described and evaluated using operational data and engineering type of estimates. / <p>QC 20170116</p>

The impact of material supply system on assembly efficiency : A study that focus on how different parts in kitting and line stocking can make the assembly more efficient.

Björklund, Sofie, Tuomisto, Emelie January 2020 (has links)
Purpose - What influences the choice of material supply systems as well as how the design of the systems influences the efficiency of the assembly is substantially important. This because the target audience of the study; manufacturing companies whom applies any kind of material supply system, must be able to achieve and maintain a social and economic sustainability. Thus, the study aims to: Increase knowledge of how the choice and arrangement of material supply affects the efficiency of assembly. The purpose has been broken down into three research questions: 1.      Which is the most suitable material supply system depending on various types of factors? 2.     How does the material supply system affect the efficiency of the assembly process? 3.     How should material supply systems be adapted for an efficient assembly process? Method - The purpose of the study and the research questions are based on the problem description that was formulated. An abductive approach has characterized the case study work process. The literature review has formulated by a review of previous research and has together with the data collection methods: interviews, observations and document studies, formed the analysis. In order to provide answers to the study’s research questions, collected data was compared to previous research, in order to find similarities or differences. Result - The choice of material supply system is mainly influenced by applied production strategy, production system and the setup of the assembly. It doesn’t matter how the choice has been made unless a well-functioning information system exists, in terms of efficiency of the assembly. Walking distances as well as the location of components and how they are introduced to the assembler, should also be considered in the design of the material supply systems. That is important due to the value-adding activities performed at the assembly station. Several problems have been identified with the use of Lean tools which contributed to formulated improvement suggestions. Implications – The theoretical contributions of the study covers the inadequate theory that was found when connecting production strategies with the advantages and disadvanatges of material supply systems. Also, most of the theories emphasize how efficiency in assembly lines can be improved with the use of material supply systems, but there is limited information how the design of material supply systems affects the efficiency of assemblers in production cells. Empirically, the study contributes with different stages where various issues and wastes have been identified based on the presentation and the arrangement of the material supply systems. This increases the opportunity to prioritize the issues which should be based on the stages that includes most waste. Likewise, the choice of material supply system can be used as guidelines to find out when each system is most suitable. Limitations - Since data has been collected from only one company, the study's validity can be questioned. In addition, an abductive approach made the study complex as well as time-consuming and contributed to that the intended use of economic models was defaulted.

Simulation as an Enabler for ProductionSystem Development within the Indoor Vertical Farming Industry

Abbas, Anwar, Faruk Acar, Ömer January 2023 (has links)
With the increase in food consumption, new ideas, and technologies began to be developed. Inaddition, the developments generated by Industry 4.0 technologies have started to be applied tothe entire manufacturing sector and the indoor farming industry, which is currently trending. Many studies and articles have been prepared on this subject, and the main goal of each study isto produce quality products and to ensure continuity in production to cover the nonendingincrease in demand. This paper discusses how simulation technology, which is one of the industry 4.0 technologies, can be used in the production system development of the indoor farming industry. According tomany researchers, the biggest obstacle for the vertical farming industry is start-up cost, andsimulation technologies can be the solution for this since it allows future production systems tobe analyzed without any investment. To have a clear vision of how these technologies can beadapted in the indoor farming industry, this paper will find the answers to these questions, RQ1:How can simulation facilitate production system development and Industry 4.0 projects withinthe indoor farming industry? RQ2: What are the benefits and challenges when using simulationas a tool for production system development within the indoor farming industry? To reach thegoal of this paper, the case study method was used, and an indoor farming company was selectedto get more realistic data about the vertical farming system. BlueRedGold AB is a start-upcompany in the indoor farming industry, and it has a huge growth potential since they aim totransform its current production lines to be fully automated. Many articles and studies were usedto approach the solution of the research questions from a more technical and academic point ofview, and the analysis of these articles was carried out with the structured literature review method. After conducting this research, answers have been obtained for the research questions. Theauthors' solution to the layout issue, one of the case company's main challenges as indicated inthis study, was developed after extensive simulation model testing. As highlighted in this paper,it has been stated by many researchers, there are several simulation approaches to follow. However, the authors have developed a simulation modeling approach to be followed in theindoor vertical farming industry to overcome the complexity of these systems as well as thesimulation program complexity. In addition, several challenges and benefits have beenhighlighted in this paper such as the lack of ready models of the equipment used in indoorfarming which requires a knowledge of a programing language to overcome. Finally, despitechallenges, simulation technology can provide an applicable solution for production systemproblems of vertical farming companies/organizations to obtain continuous improvementphilosophy which is the main principle of Lean thinking. The generated simulation model in thisthesis project was successfully implemented, demonstrating how this technology might be aneffective solution for complex production systems as in the indoor farming sector.

Automatisering av manuella monteringsstationer / Automation of manual assembly stations

Färjsjö, Felicia, Åhlin, Jonas January 2018 (has links)
Tekniklösningarna bryts ned i investeringsuppskattningar vilka presenteras i kapitel 6.3, tabell 15. / The thesis project is conducted during spring of 2018 at Scania axle and transmission assembly in Södertälje. The axle and transmission assembly consists in large parts of manual assembly stations but also of automatic tightening solution The main objective of the thesis project is to automate three manual assembly stations as far as possible. The main objective where divided into three assignments. First assignment is to identify and describe the work stations current state. Second assignment is to identify and propose necessary changes of the current process. Last assignment is to identify technical solutions for automation and present investment, budget and calculate time for payback. Objectives and delimitations of the thesis project is found in the introduction chapter. To gather knowledge of the product and assembly line an practice period where conducted during the first week of the thesis project. To reach an academic perspective of our thesis a literature review was conducted. The theoretical frame of reference is used during the project in two different ways, as a theoretical background to our objective and also as an basis for several interviews with researchers and senior colleagues at Scania. In order to meet the third assignment to identify technical solutions an internal benchmark was performed on several of Scanias production units. Internal benchmark and literature review has been the basis of the proposed technical solutions. Chapter 2.1 contains a description of work method of the thesis and the methods applied. The manual assembly operations performed on the assembly line are to assemble screw, press and adhesives conjoins. A description of the manual assembly operations is found in chapter 4.2, Figure 9. The assembly operations performed on the manual assembly stations are screw and nut placement, adhesive application, bearing placement and lift. The thesis describes in chapter 6.2 the technical options for automation solutions applied to the four manual assembly stations. The technical options are identified through the internal benchmark at Scania. The technical options are presented as estimated investments in Chapter 6.3, table 15. The technical option is estimated to an investment of 16.5 to 22.5 million sek. The technical solution results in an annual saving at 2.5 million sek., which gives an 6.6 to 9 years payback time (Shown in Chapter 6.3, table 16). The automation solution the thesis project proposes has advantages in that the ergonomic repetitions are significantly reduced (chapter 3.4 and 4.4) and contributes to ensure quality of the adhesive application of the conjoint. Challenges with the proposed automation system is to create additional value cross functional through the organization and to design a solution that is flexible enough to meet changes in products and/or production flow. Recommendation for investment in the thesis projects automation solution cannot be given due to the lack of future flexibility and additional value to another part of the organization. The thesis project shows significant advantages for automation solution in terms of ergonomics and quality. The recommendation is to continue the study of how an investment in an automated solution can create a cross functional value and contribute to product flexibility.

Moving Toward Green Production Systems in the Pharmaceutical Industry : Implementing Artificial Intelligence to Increase Environmental Efforts in SMEs / Mot grönare produktionssystem inom läkemedelsindustrin : Implementering av Artificiell Intelligens för att öka miljömässiga aspekter hos SMF

PATEL, SHARMILA, RABIZADEGAN, MARIAM January 2021 (has links)
The pharmaceutical sector is important for human health due to the increasing demand for medical products but is also a pollution and waste intensive industry. There is an urgent need for the industry to review its environmental footprints and simultaneously consider the industrial transformation called Industry 4.0. This is especially true for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). To achieve these objectives, it is presumed that artificial intelligence (AI) will have an important role.  This thesis sets out to identify barriers that pharmaceutical SMEs may encounter when implementing AI to improve environmental efforts. Furthermore, due to the lack of efficient tools the Green Performance Map is analyzed to see if additional value in the design phase and running of a production system can be obtained. Semi-structured interviews were conducted as this thesis is a case study and follows an inductive process. Other qualitative data and literature were used to investigate the research questions. The results indicate that organizational, resource, regulatory and knowledge specific factors can create barriers. Furthermore, there are indications that the Green Performance Map will be useful in both the design phase and running of a production system, this is however dependent on the resources.

Dinâmica do nitrogênio no ambiente solo-planta em razão do sistema de adubação / Nitrogen dynamics in soil-plant environment due to fertilization system

Oliveira, Silas Maciel de 04 February 2014 (has links)
In maize crop, sidedress nitrogen fertilization in V3 or V6 phenological stages was moved to cultivated oat during off season or in pre-sowing by farmers that adopt the no-tillage maize system. However, the efficiency of this fertilization system is unknow. This research was designed to understand nitrogen (N) dynamic by evaluating the recovery in soil, maize plant and oat straw to calculate the N use efficiency (NUE) by maize crop. Maize crop fields experiments were conducted in Guarapuava, Paraná state and Taquarituba, São Paulo state, where fertilization rate was 180 kg ha-1 and 150 kg ha-1 of N respectively. Experimental desing was randomized block with four repetitions and five fertilization systems: N in oat tillering; N in pre-sowing corn, N in sowing corn; N sidedress in V3 and N sidedress in V3 and V6. Grain yield, with average 14,2 Mg ha-1 in Guarapuava and 10,6 Mg ha-1 in Taquarituba were not statiscally different. N fertilization in oat showed NUE 41% lower due to N soil contribution and high N loss with 50% 15N unaccounted. Fertilization systems which N-fertilizer was applied sidedress in V3 or V3 and V6 maize stage were more efficient with NUE 51% and 55%, respectively. Grain yield was not able to measure the efficiency of fertilization system. The anticipation of N fertilization in maize crop had low N use efficiency from N derived from fertilizer..

Modeling and analysis of global and resilient supply chain based on Petri Net.

Kano, Célia Hanako 16 June 2015 (has links)
In a context of increasing competition, rising of expectations for product innovations and need to satisfy different consumer needs, the concept of global supply chain management (GSCM) emerges as a strategy to more efficiently coordinate the geographically dispersed activities of production systems. Adopting GSCM, organizations have to deal with external disruptions that impact management activities, such as transport interruption, power supply failure, natural disasters and terrorist attacks. In this way, a systematized procedure for modeling supply chains as a discrete event system and simulation analysis of GSCM activities based on formal techniques, such as Petri net (PN) and Production Flow Schema (PFS) is introduced. An example is also presented to illustrate and confirm the advantages of the proposed method for GSCM analysis.

Changes in the microclimate in AFS, can affect the potassium use efficiency by crops. The high absorption of potassium (K) by the plants of white oat, corn and eucalyptus make potassium fertilization an essential practice in AFS. The objectives of this study were to quantify (i) the dry matter yield (DM) and nutrient accumulation in shoots of white oat (season 2014); (ii) the DM and grain yield, and the nutritional status of maize (season 2014/15); (iii) potassium use efficiency by crops in succession (white oat - maize); and (iv) assess the main soil fertility attributes after the white oat crop (season 2014) and maize (season 2014/2015) in AFS fertilized with K. The experiment was installed in Model Farm of Agronomic Institute of Paraná (IAPAR), in the city of Ponta Grossa (PR) in an Oxisoil úmbrico. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with split plots and three replications. The plots consist of four transects - growing distances from trees (transects: 1 - 0- 4 m away; 2 - 4-8 m away; 3 - 8-12 m distance and 4 - 12-16 m away). In the subplots were studied four annual K2O levels (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1 year-1), as potassium chloride (600 g kg-1 K2O), applied to the surface, and half of each levels applied at sowing of each crop (white oat - winter and maize - summer). The DM yields and nutrients accumulation in the shoots of white oat were determined on management with herbicide. In maize, was evaluated the nutritional status and measured DM and grain yields. Also, values of pH, contents of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and K exchangeable, base saturation (V) and the percentage of K in the effective CECe were determined in the layers of 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm. The DM yield and the accumulation of nutrients in the shoots of white oat decreased due to the shade provided by the eucalyptus. To this culture in AFS, the levels of K2O increased the yield of DM and the accumulation of sulfur (S) in the shoot. In situation of shading of 64.5%, recycling of nutrients by white oat provided for the subsequent corn crop, better nutrition and, on average, higher DM and grain yields. In this situation, the addition of K2O (up to 230 kg ha- 1 year-1) would provide higher yield of corn grain. This decrease in K level directly implies greater potassium use efficiency, lower production cost and could make possible the cultivation of corn in AFS in the Campos Gerais region. The application of potassium fertilizer high water solubility, in the surface of the soil, reduced, in some situations, Ca and Mg content in the surface layer, it favored the mobility of K and increased its content of this nutrient throughout the soil profile and thus their participation in CECe. The tree component reduced nutrient concentrations in transecta 1 (most influential eucalyptus region), resulting in lower pH values and V in subsurface soil layers (below 20 cm deep).
