[en] AUTOMATIC BUILDING OF DOMAIN ONTOLOGIES: DISCUSSION AND RESULTS / [pt] ELABORAÇÃO AUTOMÁTICA DE ONTOLOGIAS DE DOMÍNIO: DISCUSSÃO E RESULTADOS

MARIA CLAUDIA DE FREITAS 25 April 2007 (has links)
[en] The main goal of this work is to present an automated method for building domain-specific corpus-based ontologies. The assumption is that semantic relationships, such as hypernym, can be systematically expressed through lexicalsyntactic patterns. Starting with some of these patterns, originally described in Hearst (1992), I (i) identify new patterns that express hypernym; (ii) adapt three other patterns (Hearst, 1992), considering specificities of the Portuguese language; and (iii) intersect these results, in order to produce inferences. The theoretical approach is inspired by the wittgensteinian ideas about meaning. The resulting ontology´s most prominent features are: (i) the fact that it does not have a priori categories, since categories are human constructs, abstractions that reflect a particular world view. Instead of discussing what should be the main categories in a domain, sustaining the ontology on corpora assumes that the corpus reflects the implicit knowledge of a given domain; and (ii) the fact that it does not have a priori definitions: the meaning of a word is derived from its relations with other words. The method - automatic extraction of semantic relations through rules, and the intersection of this information in order to produce inferences - was applied to two corpora: a health domain corpus and a generic corpus. The positive results show that the method can be very useful in ontology building and it can also be a valuable tool for lexicographers and named entity recognition systems. The main advantages of the method are (i) the simplicity of automating the process of ontology building; (ii) the ease of categorizing specialized domains, and (iii) its dynamicity, since the possibility of constantly updating the corpus makes it less subject to errors.

Da imagem ao símbolo: a escrita do nome próprio por crianças de três anos / From image to symbol: how three year old children write their proper names

Alencar, Claudia Maria Barbosa de 27 April 2012 (has links)
This work assumes that, through the analysis of the movement between speaking and writing, it is possible to understand the means by which the child builds the concept of proper name. In other words, it favors the study of the moment in which, to every one of the informers, the proper name was no longer an image and started operating as a symbol. The overall aim of this research was to comprehend how the concept of proper name symbolization occurs. The object of analysis was the written production of children around the age of three who are students at a nursery school in the countryside of São Paulo. During 2009, the informers were monthly recorded. The images were taken during a written activity in which the students were expected to write their own names. The aim of this activity was not only registering the act when the child writes her own name but also the speech produced while writing. Thus, the corpus was composed for video recording, simple transcriptions of the speeches recorded and four childrens written productions. We first consider Lacans approach, which considers the proper name a feature that creates a sign in a body and, as it designates a difference, signs it up in a determined place. Thus, this research aimed to answer how young children interpret the graphic marks produced by them, deliberately or accidentally, when they are asked to write their proper names. By the datas analysis, we intended to privilege the clues of the episodes that show the alternation between the human psychism registers described by Lacan (Real, Symbolic and Imaginary). By confronting the childrens productions, it was possible to conclude that there were movements in and from the written composition. It is possible to state that, little by little, the informers got up to date, when writing, their antipersonification to the language rules and, for this reason, they could cover a way in order to appropriate the written representation system. We assume, therefore, that the traces and lines produced work as significants that interrogate the child and instigate her to reflect on the written text. During this process, the teacher intervened, improving the reflection on the written text and supporting the hypotheses recast on writing as a knowledge object. In relation to the modifications in the relationship between the informers and the knowledge generated from the process, we could say that they started looking for ways to represent themselves through a singular and proper sign. We concluded, therefore, that the necessary investment in order to read more carefully young childrens productions is valuable, because it may give elements that will help comprehending the difficulties in teaching the older children how to read and write.

Proper names in the light of theoretical onomastics

Blanár, Vincent 20 August 2014 (has links) (PDF)
A proper name is a vocabulary element of a particular language which also belongs to a respective onymic subsystem, thereby acquiring a binary character. Proper names are formed (as a secondary plan of a language) with the background of appellative vocabulary. However, in their formation and use in communication, not only are the rules of the appellative language code applied but also the rules specific to proper names. Two opposing but interrelated tendencies are typical of the position of proper names – a continuous interaction of proper names with other vocabulary and the whole language system and, simultaneously, a continuous polarisation of the category of proper names in relation to appellatives. The interaction of proper names with other vocabulary relates to the ongoing processes of onymisation (appellative % proprium) and apellativisation (proprium % appellative) with the openness of onymy (the social, historical, cultural as well as the political dimensions of proper names present a wide range of possibilities for, e. g. the adoption of exonyms) but, above all, it relates to the social needs of ordinary communication. The polarisation of proper names in relation to appellatives is, hence, conditioned by the special character of onymic nomination. From this binary interrelationship of proper names follows the binary status of the category nomen proprium, i. e. linguistic status and onomastic status. In the analysis of proper names and from the methodological standpoint in onomastics, I consider this to be fundamental. That is why, after the older characterisation of onomastics, I have extended the definition of the linguistic status of proper names as defined by Kuryłowicz (La position linguistique du nom propre, 1956) to linguistic and onomastic status (Blanár 1976, 1977 ). These terms will be discussed later.

Une analyse discursive du nom et des représentations du Hezbollah dans la presse libanaise, française et américaine (2010- 2011) / A discourse analysis of the proper name and the representations of Hezbollah in the Lebanese, French and American newspapers (2010-2011)

Asmar, Pascale 13 December 2013 (has links)
We chose to reflect on the proper noun and the changes it undergoes in discourse. Using the keyword, “Hezbollah”, we started the analysis of a corpus of newspapers (7 Lebanese, French and American newspapers), from January 2010 (probable threat of war between Israel and Hezbollah) till January 2011 (the fall of the Lebanese government). A quantitative study, based on textual statistics, was a must in an attempt to identify the importance of Hezbollah according to main events during this period of time and the number and length of articles. While shifting from the word to the text, we the analyzed the combinations of “Hezbollah” in its immediate context (predications, adjectives), then its reformulations in the broader context, to highlight the possible differences between countries and editorial lines.

Analysis of High Fidelity Turbomachinery CFD Using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition

Spencer, Ronald Alex 01 March 2016 (has links)
Assessing the impact of inlet flow distortion in turbomachinery is desired early in the design cycle. This thesis introduces and validates the use of methods based on the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) to analyze clean and 1/rev static pressure distortion simulation results at design and near stall operating condition. The value of POD comes in its ability to efficiently extract both quantitative and qualitative information about dominant spatial flow structures as well as information about temporal fluctuations in flow properties. Observation of the modes allowed qualitative identification of shock waves as well as quantification of their location and range of motion. Modal coefficients revealed the location of the passage shock at a given angular location. Distortion amplification and attenuation between rotors was also identified. A relationship was identified between how distortion manifests itself based on downstream conditions. POD provides an efficient means for extracting the most meaningful information from large CFD simulation data. Static pressure and axial velocity were analyzed to explore the flow physics of 3 rotors of a compressor with a distorted inlet. Based on the results of the analysis of static pressure using the POD modes, it was concluded that there was a decreased range of motion in passage shock oscillation. Analysis of axial velocity POD modes revealed the presence of a separated region on the low pressure surface of the blade which was most dynamic in rotor 1. The thickness of this structure decreased in the near stall operating condition. The general conclusion is made that as the fan approaches stall the apparent effects of distortion are lessened which leads to less variation in the operating condition. This is due to the change in operating condition placing the fan at a different position on the speedline such that distortion effects are less pronounced. POD modes of entropy flux were used to identify three distinct levels of entropy flux in the blade row passage. The separated region was the region with the highest entropy due to the irreversibilities associated with separation.

CHARACTERIZATION OF ROTARY BELL ATOMIZERS THROUGH IMAGE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES

Wilson, Jacob E. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Three methods were developed to better understand and characterize the near-field dynamic processes of rotary bell atomization. The methods were developed with the goal of possible integration into industry to identify equipment changes through changes in the primary atomization of the bell. The first technique utilized high-speed imaging to capture qualitative ligament breakup and, in combination with a developed image processing technique and PIV software, was able to gain statistical size and velocity information about both ligaments and droplets in the image data. A second technique, using an Nd:YAG laser with an optical filter, was used to capture size statistics at even higher rotational speeds than the first technique, and was utilized to find differences between serrated and unserrated bell ligament and droplet data. The final technique was incorporating proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) into image data of a side-profile view of a damaged and undamaged bell during operation. This was done to capture differences between the data sets to come up with a characterization for identifying if a bell is damaged or not for future industrial integration.

Developing Experimental Methods and Assessing Metrics to Evaluate Cerebral Aneurysm Hemodynamics

Melissa C Brindise (7469096) 17 October 2019 (has links)

Accurately assessing the risk and growth of rupture among intracranial aneurysms (IA) remains a challenging task for clinicians. Hemodynamic factors are known to play a critical role in the development of IAs, but the specific mechanisms are not well understood. Many studies have sought to correlate specific flow metrics to risk of growth and rupture but have reported conflicting findings. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has predominantly been the methodology used to study IA hemodynamics. Yet, CFD assumptions and limitations coupled with the lack of CFD validation has precluded clinical acceptance of IA hemodynamic assessments and likely contributed to the contradictory results among previous studies. Experimental particle image velocimetry (PIV) studies have been noticeably limited in both scope and number among IA studies, in part due to the complexity associated with such experiments. Moreover, the limited understanding of the robustness of hemodynamic metrics across varying flow and measurement environments and the effect of transitional flow in IAs also remain open issues. In this work, techniques to enhance IA PIV capabilities were developed and the first volumetric pulsatile IA PIV study was performed. A novel blood analog solution—a mixture of water, glycerol and urea— was developed and an autonomous methodology for reducing experimental noise in velocity fields was introduced and demonstrated. Both of these experimental techniques can also be used in PIV studies extending beyond IA applications. Further, the onset and development of transitional flow in physiological, pulsatile waveforms was explored. The robustness of hemodynamic metrics such as wall shear stress, oscillatory shear index, and relative residence time across varying modalities, spatiotemporal resolutions, and flow assumptions was explored. Additional hemodynamic metrics which have been demonstrated to be influential in other cardiovascular flows but yet to be tested in IA studies were also identified and considered. Ultimately this work provides a framework for future IA PIV studies as well as insight on using hemodynamic evaluations to assess the risk of growth and rupture of an IA, thereby taking steps towards enhancing the clinical utility of such analysis.

Discours d'entreprise et organisation de l'information : apports de la textométrie dans la construction de référentiels terminologiques adaptables au contexte / Corporate discourses and information organization : Contribution of the textual statistics to the construction of terminological thesaurus adaptable to the context

Erlos, Frédéric 16 January 2009 (has links)
Information organization on an intranet (internal network of an organization, using technologies of Internet) needs new approaches handling the question of the adequacy between the structures of intranet sites and the language use of their visitors. A way to take into account these usages is to explore textual data which are representative of a specific situation of communication. Such an exploration is carried out with textual statistics tools, like hierarchical index, concordance, repeated segment, textual map, co-occurrence and cluster analysis. This corpus-based approach allows us to extract linguistic units belonging, for example, to texts of corporate communication (annual reports). Recognition and storage of such lexical data aim at the construction of a terminological thesaurus of a peculiar type. We suggest taking into account the context of communication by using three sorts of marks : - the particular ontology of an organization such as it is evoked in discourses, - the pragmatic properties of the proper names, - a selection of proper names allows gathering a part of the characteristic vocabulary of the corpus used as source for the terminological thesaurus. This collection does not thus limit itself to the only terminological units, but also contains words of the common language and proper names. Elements belonging to the vocabulary of the corpus are selected according to the type of semantic relations established with the proper names in the texts. Finally, the results are assessed in terms of productivity, reliability and representativeness.
