Stress in the workplace : the phenomenon, some key correlates and problem solving approaches

Vogel, Fergus Ruric 14 November 2007 (has links)
In this study the researcher set out to determine the levels and the causes of workplace stress, as well as the consequences of stress in terms of witnessed and experienced aggression in the workplace, anxiety, depression, and worry for a sample of 205 subjects. To achieve this, the following tests were used: 1) Experience of Work and Life Circumstances Questionnaire, 2) the Aggression in the Workplace Questionnaire, 3) the IPAT Anxiety Scale,4) the Beck Depression Inventory, and 5) the Penn State Worry Questionnaire. The subjects’ ability to cope withexperienced stressors in relation to social problem solving was examined with the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised. The raw data were analysed by means of the usual descriptivestatistics. In addition, inferential statistics including z-tests, t-tests, analysis of variance and posthoc analyses (Scheffé) were conducted for the following groups: total group, gender, marital status, age, organizational type, qualification and position level. Results indicate that most of the subjects in the sample experienced normal levels of stress, indicating that the participants generally experienced their circumstances within or outside the workplace as satisfactory. Generally, the results also indicated that their expectations regarding their work situation were met. With reference to the consequences of stress, the total sample reported low levels of witnessing and experiencing workplace aggression, normal levels of anxiety, low levels of depression and worry. Good overall social problem solving suggests the ability to cope with demands and stressors within and outside the workplace. Generally, Pearson correlations indicated significant relationships between a) levels of stress as experienced by subjects and b) witnessed and experienced workplace aggression, c) anxiety, d) depression, e) worry and f) social problem solving. That most of the subjects in this sample were able to deal effectively with the demands and stressors placed on them, from within and outside the workplace suggests the ability to use effective problem-focused coping involving social problem solving which for most participants, was due to a positive problem orientation and effective rational problem solving skills. These findings may be useful as part of a stress management programme to help employees deal with stress proactively by becoming more effective problem-solvers. In terms of a salutogenic paradigm, and consistent with recent developments in positive psychology, the findings indicate that more attention should be paid to possible reasons why some employees appear to cope with stress more effectively than others. / Thesis (PhD (Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Psychology / PhD / unrestricted

[en] OPERATIONAL RISK MEASUREMENT AND ASSESSMENT: A CASE STUDY OF HEDGE OPERATION IN PETROLEUM INDUSTRY / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO E MENSURAÇÃO DE RISCOS OPERACIONAIS: UM ESTUDO DE CASO EM OPERAÇÕES DE HEDGE NA INDÚSTRIA DO PETROLEO

CAMILA CRISPIM BASTOS 18 March 2011 (has links)
[en] Before 1990, market and credit risk measures were the major sources of academic research in finance field, motivated by finance industry. However as a consequence of recent financial scandals in the banking industry, involving fraud and human errors, which caused catastrophic losses and even bankruptcy of many institutions around the world, a new and unexplored kind of risk has started to be studied which is called the operational risk. It is defined as the risk of loss resulting from inadequate or failed internal processes, people and systems or from external events. Due to its risk characteristics, it is present in all kind of industry but most academic researches and methodologies are developed for financial institutions. After an extensive search, we didn’t find bibliographic references similar to those in banking sector which could elucidate the operational risk management level of maturity for other sectors. We could not even find a commom definition and classification of operational risks for other industries. Thus, this work intends to explore frameworks and methodologies, developed by financial industry for evaluation and measurement of operational risk, to see how this method can be extended for other industries. Additionally, we applied these concepts and methodologies for a sector of an oil and gas company.

Desenvolvimento e automatização de um método teórico para a avaliação quantitativa da seletividade de proteínas do MHC por diferentes antígenos / Development and automation of a theoretical method for quantitative evaluation of the MHC proteins of different antigens selectivity

Jackson Gois da Silva 25 June 2004 (has links)
In this work we automated the new methodology MHCalc, developed previously in our laboratory, which resulted in the computational program with the same name, written in C language to GNU/Linux environment. The program MHCalc evaluates quantitatively the selectivity of a given MHC protein. This quantitative evaluation allows the establishment of a preference scale of the naturally occurring residues for each pocket of a MHC molecule. From such a study it may be derived composition rules to peptides recognizable in each allele studied, even in the absence of experimental data. The methodology developed in our laboratory is based on the selectivity evaluation of each pocket independently, through its interaction energy with each naturally occurring amino acid. The program MHCalc uses the molecular modeling package THORMM [Moret, 1998] to optimize the geometry of the structures described below, and needs as only entry the PDS like file with the coordinates of the MHC/peptide complex. The program finishes printing out a data file containing the naturally occurring residues in preference order for each pocket and the data used to order these residues. We tested the program MHCalc to the complex molecule HLA-DR1 (DRA DRB1 *01 01) with the Hemaglutinin peptide, obtained at the BrookHaven Prote in Data Bank (1 DLH entry). This system was chosen because it has been highly studied and so offers abundant experimental and theoretical data to compare our results. We obtained data referring to pocket 1 so far, which is in full agreement with the literature.

”Lill-Marta” och ”Granen” med hela svenska folket : En kvantitativ studie om Aftonbladets gestaltning av herrarnas och damernas världsmästerskap i fotboll / “Lill-Marta” and “Granen” with the entire Swedish people : A quantitative study on how Aftonbladet constructed the men's and women's FIFA World Cup

Rydeberg, Herman, Kilvéus, Isabella January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine how the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet wrote and constructed their articles about the FIFA World Cup 2018 and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019. The other purpose was to see if the Sweden men’s national football team and the Sweden women’s national football team got the same space in the newspaper and to see if the teams are portrayed in different ways. This study is based on both a quantitative content analysis and a critical discourse analysis. To do so we analyzed all of the articles that were published during both of the World Cups group stages. In total, the study examines 291 articles, split between two time periods. For our critical discourse analysis, we used six articles, all written the day after a game in the group stage.   The great conclusion that was made in our study showed that Aftonbladet more often wrote about the Sweden men’s national football team then they did about the Sweden women’s national football team. It was also common that the articles constructed about the men’s team were more likely to be about their achievements and their game on the pitch when the articles about the women’s team were more likely to be about feelings and their personal life. A pattern that we could follow during our study was that it was more often male journalists wrote about the men’s World Cup and that women wrote about the women’s World Cup.

The image representation in Swedish news press of elderly under Covid-19 2020. : A quantitative and qualitative image analysis of the elderly representation in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter.

Johansson, Jesper, Johansson, Victoria January 2021 (has links)
The recommendations in Sweden following the coronavirus has led to a group of elderly people feeling discriminated – as some might not relate to the stereotypical view of people above the age of 70. This is just somewhat example how a negative stereotype towards elderly people could take form. A view similar like this towards elderly people that includes prejudicial attitudes or negative stereotypes is a form of discrimination, and goes by the name of ageism – which also might be our most accepted form of discrimination today. Sweden is a home for over 1.6 million people above the age of 70, which makes up for around 16 % of the total population. That makes the group a large target for discrimination. It might not be easy to reach out to all these people by yourself, but it’s certain that big media corporations have the power to do so. Our goal with this thesis was to study how two of the largest dailies in Sweden – Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter image distribution of the elderly people look like in terms of representation during the restrictions and recommendations of the coronavirus. In order to achieve this we used Lars Anderssons interpretation of ageism as our theoretical starting point, but also Stuart Hall’s theory about representation to answer in which way elderly people are being represented. The first level of analysis for this thesis was quantitative, as we wanted to see in frequencies which way the subject for this study is portrayed. This then gave us a broader picture we can work with for our qualitative analysis, where we then focused on analyzing semiotically of the elderly looks like in the news pictures during the given time frame for this study from 1ˢᵗ of April to 30ᵗʰ September. The results presented in this thesis did not share a similar result with most of the recent studies in the same field – which reveals how elderly people are portrayed in a negative ageing stereotype as well as underrepresented in the media.

Ročková, Anna January 2020 (has links)
The diploma theses named The media response of the company Knižní klub (1992-2018) examines how had the Czech media refered about the publishing house Knižní klub. In the first part of this theses can be found the description of the development of the book market and also of the publishing market throughout the years, starting with the progress of the book printing followed by the description of the historical phases that had impact on the book market. The second part of the diploma theses is dealing with the company Knižní klub and everything related to that. The following chapter describes all the companies that had ever owned the company Knižní klub during the time it has been active on the Czech market. The analysis itself is divided into two big chapters accoring to the time periods. The first chapter analyses chosen printed media that had been active during the years from 1992 to 2013. The second chapter is examining the medialization of the company Knižní klub within the years 2014 to 2019 and for the analysis of the medialization had been used not only printed media but also online media as their influence grew with time. A quantitative analysis has been used to get the results of the analysis in this second chapter.

Optimization of Magnetic Resonance Diffusion Tensor Imaging for Visualization and Quantification of Periprostatic Nerve Fibers

Nordbrøden, Mats January 2015 (has links)
Prostatectomy, surgical resection of the whole prostate is a common treatment for high- risk prostate cancer. Common side effects include long-time urinary and or erectile dysfunction due to damage inflicted to periprostatic nerves. The aim of this study was to identify an optimal magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging protocol for visualization and quantification of these nerves, as pre-surgery visualization may help nerve-sparing surgery. Both scanner filter, parameters for accelerated scan techniques, diffusion-related acquisition parameters and post- processing tractography parameters were investigated. Seven healthy volunteers were scanned with a state-of-art 3 T MRI scanner with varying protocol parameters. Diffusion data were processed and analysed using Matlab and Explore DTI. The resulting protocol recommendation included a normalized scanner filter, a parallel imaging acceleration factor of 2, partial Fourier sampling of 6/8, a right-left phase encoding direction, a b-value of 600 s/mm2, monopolar gradient polarity with applied eddy current correction, four acquisitions of 12 diffusion- sensitizing gradient directions, and a reverse phase encoding approach for correction of geometrical image distortions induced by static field inhomogeneity. For post-processing tractography, the recommended parameters were a lower limit for fractional anisotropy of 0.05, a minimum tract length of 3 centimetres and a maximum turning angle between voxels of 60 degrees. The limited parameter range that was tested and the low number of volunteers can be regarded as limitations to this study. Future work should address these issues. Furthermore, feasibility of periprostatic nerve tracking with the optimized protocol should be tested in a patient study.

Hernández García, Elimay Gabriela, Saldaña Ayala, Daniel Alonso 16 August 2020 (has links)
According to Gordillo (2014), most construction projects in Peru does not apply an adequate risk management since its bidding phase which leads to important deficiencies during the cost estimating and decision-making processes impacting the achievement of the project cost objectives. As a result, expected profits and funding for the contractor company are affected which, at the same time, detriments its reputation and discourages stakeholders to invest in new projects. This investigation proposes a risk evaluation procedure focused on identifying and mitigating cost variances that can impact construction project profits by using the Monte Carlo Simulation technique, selected by its high capacity data processing and application practicality. The procedure is composed by five main steps: Identify risks; Quantitative Risk Analysis, modeling risks by using the Monte Carlo Simulation technique; Plan Risk Responses; Control Risks during construction; and Update proposed organizational assets such as the Cost Control Structure, Cost Ratio Register, Learned Lessons Register and Risk Breakdown Structure (RBS). These assets allow to perform an adequate cost and risk information management. This procedure was validated through expert judgement by professionals specialized in risk evaluation and computerized tools. The proposal contributes to expand the knowledge of an area as risk management in the country. / Tesis

Hur behandlas psykisk hälsa i gymnasieskolans undervisning? : En analys av läromedel i gymnasieskolan / How is mental health treated in upper secondary school teaching?

Andersson, Emelie January 2022 (has links)
Health is an interesting and highly relevant subject today. Physical health is something we see everywhere, in newspapers, on tv and social media, what to eat, how to exercise etc. Mental health however is still taboo even though it’s a growing problem in today’s society. Mental health is associated with many problems in our society such as lower school result and depression. This paper compare how mental health is treated compared to physical health in upper secondary school literature. This comparison is made by a comparative and a thematic analysis of six books intended for the biology and nature science classes in Swedish high school. All investigated literature has a more comprehensive section when it comes to physical health compared to mental health. There is a positive trend where the newer literature has a more extensive mental health section compared to the older literature. It´s important to increase knowledge about mental health because it is one of the most important factors in increasing well-being, and increased well-being results in better school results. In the future it’s important to identify success factors for a successful health education.
