Previous issue date: 2017-03-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This thesis presents a Multi-dimensional (MD) analysis (Biber, 1988 et seq.) of a
Corpus of American Reality TV Shows (CARTS). Reality television can be described
as unscripted television shows with non-professional actors being observed by
cameras in preconfigured environments (Kavka, 2012) and despite of being a relatively
new TV genre is a cornerstone of contemporary US television programming, since
according to some critics it has remade television culture (Murray and Quellette 2004).
The major goal of the study was to provide a lexical-grammatical description of the
verbal language of Reality TV shows by investigating a corpus of 780 texts taken from
39 popular American Reality TV shows, totaling over 6 million tokens. The specific
goals were to compare CARTS against the four dimensions of general English register
variation as well as against the five dimensions of American television register variation
(Berber Sardinha;; Veirano Pinto, in press). CARTS texts were classified into four main
program types (Competition, Documentary, Talent and Professional, and
Transformation) and into 13 sub-program types, namely, celebrities, dating, gamedoc,
docusoap, hidden cameras, reality sitcoms, business, cooking, fashion, performing,
expert guidance, self-improvement and social experimental. The corpus was balanced
so that each major category had the same number of texts. CARTS was tagged for
part of speech with the Biber Tagger and analyzed by the Bibber Tag Count which
calculated the normalized frequencies of the 128 linguistics features considered in the
research. The results present the additive MD analysis by showing how reality TV
shows are similar or different from others spoken and written English registers (from
Biber seminal 1988 study), as well as how the various manifestations of Reality TV
compare to television registers on US. Since there is no precedent for studies within
Corpus Linguistics dedicated to researching the lexical-grammatical profile of Reality
TV Shows in a multidimensional perspective, this research intends to fill this gap / O presente trabalho apresenta uma Análise Multidimensional (BIBER, 1988 et seq.)
do Corpus of American Reality TV Shows (CARTS).
(MURRAY e QUELLETTE, 2004).
SARDINHA e VEIRANO PINTO, no prelo).
melhoria pessoal e experimento social.

Previous issue date: 2014-06-25 / This research aims to investigate the extreme changes on the bodies in programs that
represent the called reality TV, like reality shows and television documentaries. The body is
socially constructed and falls over itself marks that identify and particularize the individual.
Transform the surface of the body is a practice that provokes fascination, considering that it
goes beyond just seeking a healthy look and perfect body, making embodied idea on the
surface of the body. In this context, the body becomes a living record that are registered
affections, emotions, representations of history and the subject of his time. While half the
body is an instrument of communication and inscribes itself on a textual composition and
culture of the social group, which appears resigned to their attitudes and their characterization.
However, in the media there is almost no space for description of the actions of called
outsiders, the name given by Norbert Elias and John Scotson, to people who, somehow,
escape to normal standards, thus thematising processes of social stigmatization, common in
many countries. The emergence of numerous bodily techniques and practices (re)physical
modeling is anchored in the idea of autonomy and self-regulation of the subject in relation to
his/her body, thereby reinforcing a behavior of aversion to bodies that deviate from the
dominant aesthetic standard. Thus, the primary goal is to study the position and function of
the body as text, and the ways in which the bodies are discursed - accepted standards, as well
as outsiders bodies in the programs that comprise the corpus - Extreme Makerover and Tabu
Latino America -, thus proposing a study of the maps of values and their communicative
contracts. The passionate paths are examined from the semiotics of passions of Greimas and
Fontanille, and discursive analyzes are carried out with contributions from Diana Barros,
David Le Breton, Beatriz Pires, Bill Nichols and Joseph Campbell, prioritizing interactional
issues that affect the body as communication tool. The passions, whether external or
figurativizadas the programs, motivate attitudes that lead the individual to transform his own
body, and media exposure enhances behavioral and aesthetic concepts and values that are
positivized or negative results by common sense of the viewer who consumes this spectacular

Denna studie undersöker hur unga transpersoner representeras i media, närmare bestämt inom genren reality tv.

Mediální konstrukce reality v žánru reality TV / Media costruction of reality in reality TVChristovová, Nela January 2016 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the manner how a phenomenon often called "media construction of reality" occurs in the Reality TV. This popular television genre is known for mixing reality captured on an omnipresent camera together with fiction elements in order to amuse the audience. In the theoretical part, I will focus on the concepts that are crucial for this phenomenon such as Berger's and Luckmann's social construction of reality, gatekeeping or agenda setting. Also, I will describe the history of Reality TV as a genre and also will focus on main subgenres that can be seen on television these days. In the practical part, I will use narrative analysis to identify how the media are constructing reality in television programmes. The sample for the analysis will consist of 80 episodes from 11 different TV shows of American and British production. These have already spread out of their country of origin and are familiar to Czech audience from local TV channels. My main thesis is that media construction of reality can happen from the very beginning - i.e. from rules establishing to shooting and postproduction. All these phases will be analyzed in this paper.

You´re a wet dream! You´re a wet dream!” : The jury´s criticism of male and female participants in Idol Sweden 2018: a critical discourse analysisBjörn, Josefine, Skugge, Elsa January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this qualitative study is to investigate the criticism female and male Idol participants receive from the Idol jury in the program Swedish Idol 2018, from a gender perspective. The study also investigates possible differences in the type criticism, depending on the Idol participants' sex. Using critical discourse analysis (CDA) as both theory and method, underlying messages in the Idol jury's criticism are revealed. The selection consisted of eight Idol participants: four female, two from Stockholm and two from Gothenburg and four male, two from Stockholm and two from Gothenburg. The jury´s criticism that the Idol participants received was analyzed based on the concepts stereotypes, sexualisation and naming. The result shows that both male and female Idol participants are being sexualised and stereotyped in the Idol jury's criticism. However, the female Idol participants are expected to maintain a stereotypical feminine role, while the male Idol participants do not have to maintain a stereotypical masculine role. The Idol jury's namings show that female Idol participants are being categorised more than the male Idol participants. The Idol jury's criticism to the female participants has a great focus on the body as an object and sexual satisfaction, while the criticism to the male participants focuses more on detailed bodily characteristics.

Previous issue date: 2014-04-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research intends to analyze north-American serial comedies that parody the documentary decoupage. The Office, Parks and Recreation and Modern Family, productions in the corpus of this research, are representatives of a recent trend in the United States television programming. This trend, which was intensified since the mid 2000s, features the fictional comic text in documentary language, building a particular relationship with the discourse of factuality. This format breaks with an established practice of the traditional sitcom. According to researchers, the way in which sitcoms were presented was stagnant, with the same characteristics since I Love Lucy, televised in the 1950s. This research seeks to investigate the peculiarities of the construction of comedy in the text and decoupage of the products mentioned, as well as the possible relationship between the current popularity of this format and the television context: a programming full of reality shows and the massive amateur audio-visual production on the internet. The hypothesis presented is that there is a new viewer's relationship with the discourse of factuality. Methodologically, the research will be bibliographic and documentary, involving interviews with TV authors in specialized publications and bibliography. The fundamental theoretical and methodological basis of the research is in the works Jon Dovey and Mark Andrejevic on reality TV and Brett Mills and Anthony Savorelli on sitcom / Este trabalho propõe analisar as comédias seriadas da televisão norte-americana que parodiam o
formato documental. The Office, Parks and Recreation e Modern Family, produções que
shows e a massiva produção audiovisual amadora voltada para a internet.
