The Other Side of the Fence

Jones, Benjamin S 01 January 2006 (has links)
I pull from what I see in my urban surroundings. There is always a sense of dread fused with optimism that prevails. Is it beautiful? Fragments of low-riders and tricked-out cars become symbols of desire and the glowing red lens of a stop light becomes a Cyclops poised to defend his garden. Candy-coated, blooming, dripping and seductively slick confronts you with the obvious warning: STOP! You could be next… …The grass really is greener on The Other Side of the Fence. At least until winter comes.

It is well-known the conflicts for land claimed by indigenous peoples still persist, even after the recognition of the lands granted by the Federal Constitution of 1988 and the paradigmatic decision about the demarcation of Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land. The vast regulation concerning the theme, both at global and local level, was not enough for the Federal Supreme Court to pronounce a decision recognizing the ancestry of the right to occupation and, thereby, to collaborate to pacify the issue. The question to be answered has this contradictory scenario: if there was an effective formal recognition, why, despite this, do the Indians still claim the lands that symbolize their culture and their reason to exist? From this question, a look is cast, under the theories of Axel Honneth and Nancy Fraser, in the search for ideas that can represent the overcoming of the frame of effectiveness of indigenous peoples’ rights. At the beginning, Honneth defended a monistic recognition theory, based on self-realization, once he understands the experiences of suffering and exclusion are able to form the fuel that will commence struggles which have repercussion on social movements and, with this, would happen an individual emancipation able to solve distribution problems. In another direction, debating with Honneth, Fraser says recognition, by itself, is unable to solve all injustices and so it is necessary to combine measures capable of promoting distribution. From these studies, the authors conceive other proposals aimed at overcoming invisibility, subordination status, understanding reification as a product of forgetfulness of antecedent recognition, and the importance of counterpublics in relation to official debate arenas. Always guided by this theoretical reference, it was done a review of the evolution of formal indigenous rights recognition and a critique of the way these norms were received in the demarcation trial of Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land and other decisions likewise did not contribute to pacify conflicts. At the end, it was attempted to demonstrate that Honneth and Fraser’s theories, isolated or allied, can contribute for the realization of territorial rights already recognized to indigenous.

The works takes as its theoretical basis the theory of Sfard, according to which mathematical notions are treated initially as processes evidencing their characteristics (operational conception) and then as objects (structural conception). The passage from the first to the second involves three hierarchical stages: interiorisation, condensation and reification. The books chosen for analysis were Calculus by M. Spivak and Cálculo by J. Stewart. The first book presents integral axiomatically, that is, starting from a refined construction of definitions and theorems. It firstly defines integral and goes on to consider its properties. The second presents integral from the basis of a long introduction to the calculation of areas, after which integral is defined and its properties obtained. Its strong point is the enormous quantity of exercises involving algorithmic manipulations and applications. The research shows that the formal treatment of Spivak goes against the theory of Sfard, in which she argues that an operational conception of a notion she precedes a structurally conception. Nonetheless, in spite of this, there are situations in which this order is respected. Various exercises with structural characteristics are included in the book which might favour the passage between the two conceptions. In Stewart, the treatment of integral respects the hierarchical ordering of conceptions postulated by Sfard, however the book includes few exercises with structural characteristics, although the chapters which treat the notion do present projects which could provide opportunities for its reification / A pesquisa analisa a abordagem da noção de integral em dois livros de Cálculo.

Leadership development as reflexive practice

Talucci, Sam January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines Leadership Development in both a corporate setting and an expedition-based setting. The assumptions that are the foundations of current Leadership Development originate, and are informed by, aspects of the natural sciences. These methods are critiqued in terms of usability and applicability in the context of human relating. An alternative approach is investigated based on nonlinear causality and the complex responsive process of relating using the work of Stacey (2003, 2007, 2010), Stacey and Griffin (2005), Stacey et al. (2000). What is explored is the Leader as expert and the ability through communication, decision making, and planning to create certainty. What is problematized is the fantasy that this creates in ongoing day-to-day interactions. The work explores interactions between a leadership consultant/coach and clients in varied domains: the role of the practitioner in the delivery and creation of theory, models, best practices and standard operating procedures; and the reflections of both the practitioner and clients that what is emerging cannot be foreseen. This leads to a further exploration cycle of the human experience in organizations and how reification, the uncanny, and the struggle for recognition might offer other ways of making sense of the experience. The work examines the role of the consultant/teacher and the client/student and the emergence of knowledge. It further investigates the relationship of time and causality and how this is connected to theoretical knowledge and knowledge in action. This leads to a further connection of thinking, reflecting and reflexivity and what this means as practice for leadership development. Using the context of leadership coaching for management teams and connecting the reflexive aspect of knowledge, what is argued is that sensemaking as developed by Weick (1995, 2001, 2009), Weick and Sutcliffe (2007) is not a sufficient practice to explain and create best practices, standard operating procedures, models, and theories. What is also necessary, and is identified as sensemaking and connected to Elias (1987) work, is our own involvement and detachment as we abstract to understand what is happening in the moment between human agents. It is argued that paying attention to these aspects of ongoing human relating offer the possibility of thicker and a more contextualized understanding of the emergent unpredictable outcomes that leaders deal with every day.

In this piece, the discussion of Reification presents its originality, so, for Marx the discussion of Reification was centered mainly on the material relations among men within the productive process, in History and Class Consciousness however the theory is connected to the process of material formation of the reified objectivity. This theory would be built within the development of German classical philosophy, since as Lukács first analyzes the objective forms of Reification within the socioeconomic structure the conceptualization of Reification based on Marx economic analysis and this takes to the displacement of the problem of the reified formation of consciousness in the philosophical thinking, Lukács presents his materialist interpretation of the consciousness formation: this last one possesses a material formation basis, determined by the capitalist production of commodities. This displacement represents a connection between Marxism and German classical philosophy around the issue of forming the Subject in History. In this dissertation our efforts are directed to understand the way, according to Lukács, German classical philosophy strives to produce in the History a self-knowing universal Subject and as this striving reaches the fetishist limit of its own reified formation. The main purpose is to reveal how, according to Lukács, the consciousness formation corresponds to the fetish; formation analyzed in the historical progression of bourgeois antinomic thinking. This progression corresponds to the several levels of problematisation of the Being and to the attempts of the reified subjectivity s overcoming within the development of German classical philosophy. Our perspective seeks the understanding of how the progression of antinomies allows the dialectical interpretation of the material foundations that determine the formation of consciousness in the philosophical level.

Fraga, Pauline Neutzling 05 March 2009 (has links)
By considering the advertising as a mediatical representation of a cultural industry, this thesis reflects upon the recognition of regional identity proposed in the advertising appeal. This qualitative study explored a few concepts and procedures from the enunciative Discourse Analysis in order to locate the meaning production which could answer to the following questions: What gaucho‟ has been portrayed by contemporary advertising? What are the main features of its mediatised identity? Based on the identity canon created, sustained and popularised (in terms of publicity) by the Gaucho Traditionalist Movement (GMT), were defined as specific objectives: (a) discursively describe and analyse different adverts, taking into account the localisation strategies guided by regional culture; (b) identify the verbal and non-verbal elements often used in the discursive appropriation of the gaucho myth (South Brazilian, Portuguese-speaking); and (c) verify what is(are) the predominant representation(s) of regional identity. The corpus is composed by 10 adverts published in different editions of the daily newspaper Zero Hora, which belongs to the RBS Group (South Brazil Network). The time span for data collection was 3 years (2005 2007). Adverts were collected during the months of September, in particular the Farroupilha Week and the holiday of the Gaucho Day, on September 20th. Sampling was intentional; it was selected adverts related to a variety of products and services thus contributing to diversify the representations promoted by the advertisers. The working hypothesis was that the contemporary mediatical representation of regional identity by advertising has been reified. After the analytical discursive analysis, it was possible to understand that once turned into a product, such identity is at the reach of several publics for an individual level of appropriation depending on the announcer‟s needs with their product/services and brands. Such condition would be visible when taking the gaucho myth popularised by the GMT, as its representation would be revisited in the adverts in two forms. This can be either in a compromising way, because the stereotype‟s appropriation may let slip traces of superficiality, i.e. poor arguments, faults, amateurism, forgetfulness, illogicalities, or in an openly customized way, when the advertisement bets on its overdoes and promotes itself due to its very embroidered experimentalism proposed on unusual relationships, surprise elements, provocative reads, i.e. pastiches. In those terms, the stereotype obtained from the analysis has revealed the representation of the regional identity manifested especially the following features: focus on the anonymous human plasticity in non-verbal texts; character‟s demarked phenotype, dominant masculinisation; individualising approach; socio-cultural values presented as having a common origin on a supposed ground zero, the Farroupilha Revolution; and a representation based on the gaucho myth of GTM, yet not necessarily loyal to it.

Vilar, Fabien 21 December 2018 (has links)
This document concerns the development of a theoretical mathematical framework to provide a technology able to manage some of the problematics of the big data flows domain. We propose to combine Newell's ontological and Floridi's epistemological point of views of abstraction to build tools that transform models by the mean of an adequate set of functors according to Samuel Eilenberg and Saunders Mac Lane's category theory. The proposed problem solving method relies on a real time abstraction reasoning process to resume, on line, a lot of semantically poor data into an equivalent but richer one. The price to pay for such an information semantic enrichment is the loss of syntactic data (i.e. the oversight phenomenon). Our contributions are (i) to prove that Le Goc's timed observations theory (TOT) concept of unary observer plays the same role as Dirac's sampler, (ii) the construction of the $TOT(\mathbb{Z})$ category that is adequate to formulate the proposed abstraction based PSM and (iii) the design of TOM4A (timed observations methodology for abstraction), a specific recursive abstraction-reification based PSM whose a concrete application has been provided for detecting and modeling the complex problem of internal frauds in the banking industry

Bodén, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
How did the conformist “organization man” of modern welfare society turn into the restless and flexible market-rational individualist of late-modernity? And what role did technology play in this transformation? Drawing from inquiries like these, this doctoral thesis deals with topics such as technology, culture, and the production of social consciousness. The aim of the study is to elucidate the historical emergence of late-modern reason, visible in the socio-material process of automation. The study takes two mundane technical innovations as starting points to investigate dominant social values and rationalities embedded in, and emerging from material transformations in the production process of two late modern, Swedish organizations. Covering a period of roughly fifty years (1960–2013), the analysis relies on the interpretation of a variety of both contemporary and archived sources, including interviews, observations, witness accounts and archived material in the form of staff magazines, newspapers, photographs and official documents. While following a hermeneutical tradition of European ethnology the study is also an attempt to enrich its synchronous cultural analysis of everyday life with theory grounded in historical (dialectical) materialism. Along this line of thought the thesis suggests that many of the qualities, values and everyday experiences attributed to late-modernity, such as “flexibility”, “creativity” and “flat organizations” depend on the reification and embedding of modernist social forms, ideas and relations, such as instrumental rationality, routine labour and bureaucratic taxonomy into the material foundation of daily life.
