Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Sweden: A study of ESD within a transition affected by PISA reports

Chung, Youngeun January 2013 (has links)
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has been called for playing a crucial role in integrating principles, values, and practices accorded with sustainable development. Holistic approach, ethical values, norm transitionand behavior changes are required to achieve the aim of ESD. However, while both external and internal impactsof the Swedish education system have affected its fundamental values and aims, core elements of ESD inSwedish curriculum were also influenced. This paper analyzes, in particular, the changes that PISA reportsbrought in the Swedish curriculum at the discourse level, and its potential effects on ESD. Discourse analysiswas mainly used for comparing two curricula and two syllabi. With the help of situational contexts of PISA andthe curriculum of 2011, a transition observed from text analysis was interpreted and the final discussion wasanchored with social contexts from educational discourses. The result indicated that influences from PISA in thenew curriculum and syllabus were observed in corresponded aims and goals. Situational and social contexts alsopointed to the same direction of transition due to the previous goals-oriented curriculum that made a wide rangeof teaching. Thus, fundamental values, aims and goals were changed into providing clearer guidelines forteaching scope and gradings as well as into focusing literacy skills and knowledge of concepts. In the process ofthe transition, holistic approach, ethical and democratical values, as well as focus on cultural aspects and pupils’ attributes were removed or shrunken, which implied negative impacts on ESD. On the other hand, emphasis onliteracy skills of students in the new curriculum was expected to bring positive achievement for ESD.Furthermore, in order to achieve the norm transition toward sustainable development, those lost immeasurable values are suggested to be addressed in future Swedish education.

EXAMINING PERCEPTIONS OF ADJUSTMENT, COMMUNICATION, AND RELATIONSHIP QUALITY BETWEEN MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS WHEN A MOTHER HAS BREAST CANCER

Marit, Gillian 08 September 2011 (has links)
Previous research has indicated that parents may be poor perceivers of their children’s coping and adjustment to parental cancer. However, it is unclear as to whether children have accurate perceptions of their parents’ adjustment during this time, or if parents and children have similar perceptions of their communication and their relationship. Additionally, adolescent daughters of mothers with cancer have been identified as a group of children at risk for developing psychosocial problems following a mothers’ diagnosis. Differences in perceptions of adjustment, communication, and relationship quality were investigated between mothers and daughters when a mother has breast cancer. Twenty-three mother-daughter pairs completed a cross-sectional survey. Results indicated that daughters had accurate perceptions of their mothers’ adjustment; however, significant discrepancies were identified in mothers’ perceptions of their daughters’ adjustment. Mothers and daughters also indicated similar perceptions of their relationship and communication. Limitations, implications, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Hållbarhetsredovisning : Publika företags drivkrafter bakom hållbarhetsredovisningen

Bhogal, Ramandeep, Logani, Karandip Singh January 2014 (has links)

Skilström, Erika January 2013 (has links)
This essay examine how temporal claims (past, present and future) are used in two Official Government Reports (SOU) in Sweden considering rape and sexual assault. The Official Government Reports constitute an important and particular system for long-term planning, and the reports are used as an instrument to achieve desirable changes within the nation. The temporal pretensions in SOU 1976:9 Sexual offences: proposed new wording of Penal provisions against virtue, and SOU 1982:61 Rape and other sexual assaults, are analyzed in relation to the concepts realization of the possible and actualization of the virtual, in order to see how the concepts correspond to the process of desirable change in the reports. The temporal claims are used in a spatially sense where space is assimilated to the concept of time which in return create notions of spatio-temporal images of the past, the present and the future. This is partly a problem for the reports in their aspiration to transform old norms and create innovatory values and ideals.

The Use of Financial Statements to Predict the Stock Market Effects of Systemic Crises

Almakrami, Mohammad Yahia 01 January 2013 (has links)
The financial crisis of 2007-2009 had divesting effects around the globe. Many financial institutions and government officials failed to see the build up of problems predicting the crisis and hence failed to take actions to keep the crisis from breaking out. Thus, it is important to see if the emerging problems could have been identified in advance in order to develop types of analysis that could help us avoid future crises. A full investigation of such possibilities will require many different studies taking different approaches. This dissertation contributes to that collective effort by investigating the extent to which balance sheet information could have been used to identify the emerging problems. We implement our research strategy by analyzing what types of balance sheet information did the best job of explaining how hard different major financial institutions were hit during the crisis. We constructed a large data set of financial variables from the financial reports of financial institutions over the years 2002 to 2011. We used this data to developed models to predict the damage to an individual firm when a systemic crisis occurred based on its financial position and performance over varying time periods and relative to other institutions’ characteristics. We used changes in stock market prices as our measure of performance. We found that the financial leverage ratio and the mismatch between current assets and current liabilities are the most significant ratios to predict the degree of stock market declines each institution would face if a systemic crisis occurred. We quantified the degree of the financial leverage and current ratios in two different ways, an average level and accumulated time-weighted rate of change over different lags of periods using two different estimation techniques. We found that the financial leverage and current ratios can be used as early warning signals based on both the multivariable fractional polynomials estimation technique and structural equation modeling. However, the out-of-sample tests showed that the imbalance between current assets and current liability would be the only significant predictor of the changes in stock market prices. The test confirmed that the changes in pre-crisis stock prices are less sensitive to the leverage ratio but more sensitive during crisis.

Hur dokumenteras blackout ombord på fartyg? : En studie av haverirapporter där blackout var en del av händelseförloppet

Bengtsson, Mattias, Andersen, Kristian January 2014 (has links)
On board vessels it is not desirable to have a power failure, a so-called blackout. The thesis has investigated to what extent it is feasible to perform comparative and preventive studies with the accident reports from European flag states as a basis. This in order to investigate recurring shortcomings, of the vessels or in the work on board that has caused the blackout. In addition the possibility to categorize the cases was investigated. The categories were technical errors, operational errors and organization errors. Roughly half of the cases show that a single category of fault could not be identified due to a combination of faults leading to the blackout. However there are recurring cases with almost identical scenarios. For example unsatisfactory insulation caused fires due to leaking fuel hitting the hot surfaces. The survey shows that there is a lack of symmetry regarding the language used, structure, scope and form of publication. It also showed faults in the search engines of the databases.

Social work as narrative : an investigation of the social and literary nature of social work accounting

Hall, Christopher J. January 1993 (has links)
This thesis investigates what can be gained by approaching social work reports and conversations as narratives. A conventional approach to social work accounting practices is to treat such documents as (more or less) accurate descriptions of social workers' clients, their problems and proposed remedies. Such a realist approach was found to be flawed, since it assumes straightforward access from accounts to external reality, not considering the constructedness of such documents. Drawing on theoretical themes from the sociology of scientific knowledge, literary theory, conversation analysis, ethnomethodology and sociolinguistics, this thesis explores the construction and reception of social work accounts as rhetorical, narrative and interactional processes. The documents analysed represent some of the occasions on which social workers describe and recommend social work intervention with children and their families - research interviews, court reports, internal memos, case file entries and journal reports. On these occasions, social work is performed and displayed in descriptions of people and their attributes, justifications for social work intervention and excuses for lack of success. The main theme of the thesis is that social work accounts can profitably be analysed as stories. To explain their work and their clients' world to a variety of audiences, social workers are heard to tell competent, professionally persuasive stories. A variety of storytelling features are explored, looking in particular at plot, character, the construction of the reader and the authority of the writer. Stories are heard to vary with reading occasions and critical audiences, and it is the study of reading relations which is a main focus of the analysis - to whom are these accounts addressed and how are they available to be read? Rhetorical features are investigated in order to understand how social work accounts are made available to be read as morally and factually persuasive. A critical reading is also offered, which questions the adequacy of the accounts, and makes available the possibility of reading unheard stories. Reflexive interludes comment on the claims of the thesis writer in terms of the efforts of the social work writer. The implications of this study are that treating social work accounts as textual accomplishments undermines social workers' claims for reporting objectively about their clients and their problems. Social work can be seen as constituted in and through the performance and reception of stories: doing competent social work is achieved through telling competent social work stories.

Möjlig bronsåldersboplats? : en undersökning av platser från bronsåldern på Gotland / Possible Bronze Age Settlement? : a study of places from Bronze Age on Gotland

Sardén Johansson, Erika January 2010 (has links)
There are none known Bronze Age settlement on Gotland, although there are severalexcavation reports that mention that they have found a probable Bronze Age settlement. In the excavation that have been done in the study areas, there are Bronze Age dated hearths, cooking pits and post holes. These study areas have been investigated if they might be possible Bronze Age settlements. This paper discusses about the criteria of settlements and also investigate if the study areas meet those criterias. There are many different criteria for settlement but only the criteria of FMIS are used in the study. There are also different criteria for hearths and cooking pits, what separates them from each other. There have been measures on the distance between different landscape variables in the study areas to see if there are any differences or similarities between the different study areas.
