Investigating the Influence of Mechanical anisotropy on the Fracturing Behaviour of Brittle Clay Shales with Application to Deep Geological Repositories

Lisjak Bradley, Andrea 10 January 2014 (has links)
Clay shales are currently being assessed as possible host rock formations for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. However, one main concern is that the favourable long-term isolation properties of the intact rock mass could be negatively affected by the formation of an excavation damaged zone (EDZ) around the underground openings. This thesis investigated the deformation and failure process of a clay shale, namely Opalinus Clay, with particular focus on the influence of anisotropy on the short-term response of circular tunnels. To achieve this goal, a hybrid continuum-discontinuum numerical approach was used in combination with new field measurements from the Mont Terri underground research laboratory. The response of Opalinus Clay during the excavation of a full-scale emplacement (FE) test tunnel was characterized by geodetic monitoring of wall displacements, radial extensometers and longitudinal inclinometers. The deformation measurements indicated strong directionality induced by the combined effect of in situ stress field and presence of bedding planes striking parallel to the tunnel axis, with the most severe deformation occurring in the direction approximately perpendicular to the material layering. Computer simulations were conducted using a newly-extended combined finite-discrete element method (FEM/DEM), a numerical technique which allows the explicit simulation of brittle fracturing and associated seismicity. The numerical experimentation firstly focused on the laboratory-scale analysis of failure processes (e.g., acoustic activity) in brittle rocks, and on the role of strength and modulus anisotropy in the failure behaviour of Opalinus Clay in tension and compression. The fracturing behaviour of unsupported circular excavations in laminated rock masses was then analyzed under different in situ stress conditions. Lastly, the modelling methodology was applied to the aforementioned FE tunnel to obtain original insights into the possible EDZ formation process around emplacement tunnels for nuclear waste. The calibrated numerical model suggested delamination along bedding planes and subsequent extensional fracturing as key mechanisms of the damage process potentially leading to buckling and spalling phenomena. Overall, the research findings may have a potential impact on the constructability and support design of an underground repository as well as implications for its long-term safety assessment procedure.

Αλεξόπουλος, Ανδρέας 07 April 2011 (has links)
The rapid growth of World Wide Web in the last years has led to an increase of the educational material that is available in digital way. As a result of this, searching and discovering of digital educational material is becoming more and more difficult. For this reason, digital education objects, or Learning Objects, have to be described using education metadata in order to facilitate searching, retrieval, classification and reuse of these objects. In the recent years, a lot of repositories have been built to store digital educational objects, like DSpace, EPrints and Fedora. Digital repositories make use of metadata to describe digital objects that are stored in their system. But we can note that although the main use of these repository systems is for educational purposes, we do not have the ability to enrich learning objects that are stored in these systems with educational metadata. Therefore, the main purpose of this thesis is to study the available educational metadata standards and to extend the available metadata sets of digital repositories in order to include and support metadata for education purposes. A main feature of most educational repositories is interoperability with other systems. Interoperability assures the cooperation of one repository with others by allowing the harvesting and using of digital objects stored in one place by other systems and services. For this reason, it is studied how educational metadata can be incorporated in a repository’s interoperability services, and mainly in the OAI-PMH service, which is supported by most repositories, but also in a new service named OAI-ORE. The implementation of these interoperability services is focused on the DSpace system. Finally, Semantic Web is the evolution of World Wide Web. In Semantic Web information is described by data, so this information gains meaning which gives the ability to machines to process this information which till now was meaningful only to humans. So, it is also studied how semantic interoperability can be achieved between repositories and specifically between repositories based on DSpace. This will give the ability to exchange information between systems. Although this information may come from different and heterogeneous sources, and although this information may be semantically unstructured, it can be associated and combined in order to discover new knowledge.

Santos, Daiane Barrili dos January 2017 (has links)
This research had the main objective to propose an integration landscape between research data repositories and scientific publications based on the model for enhanced publications. From its nature`s point of view, it is basic. According to the approach it is considered a qualitative, is characterized as an exploratory, bibliographic research and a case study as well. The analysis model of this study was constituted of three phases. In first phase of the analyses, specific literatures were colected through the systematic review and from literatures, in addition the suggested requirements and indicated for a model for enhanced publications were extracted, in addition the suggested requirements and indicated for an enhanced publication model were extract. In second phase of the analyses, research data repositories were select through the re3data.org directory and were verified the information provided through the filters which demonstrated the application of links based on the model for enhanced publications. In the third and last phase of the analyses, an inspection of interfaces were realized, and also elements that each repository comprehend were identified to subsequently initiate the analyses, observations and comparisions of the elements used on repositories with the estabilished requirements through systematic review. It was perceived in the literature, that there are an attempt to add a structure by using related requirements to metadata, semantic relationship, among others. Also verified that part of this estructure indicated on literature is available on interfaces of some identified repositories on re3data.org. Although these repositories which comprehend part of the indicated structure were characterized as a minority.( Continue) Therefore, there has been a growing need for an infrastructure compatible with the enhanced publications, aware of the importance for the application of requirements to the interfaces of research data repositories. The crossover of informations realized in this study allowed a greater understanding about the importance to use each one of the stipulated requirements, as well as was possible to understand the consequences in case of these requirements are not be included in the repositories interfaces. Research data repositories should provide on their interfaces the links and access to their respective scientific publications of the recorded data in order to be able to understand the studies carried out from this data. It has been proven that this process does not occur in most repositories, which difficults to understand the origin and context in which these data were used. It was noticed that repositories not in agreement with the main presented established requirements characteristics of conventional publications, as for example PDF documents, HTML texts and which was not in accordance to patterns for semantic web. This proposal for a research data integration model based on enhanced publications aims to suggest an interface that that fulfills all the specified requirements in this research to obtain an infrastructure compatible to enhanced publications. From the investigation and deepening the theme, it was possible to increase the knowledge and to detect the appropriate elements to propose an integration model between a researches data repository and scientific publications based on a model for enhanced publication as well as highlighting the advantages of applying this model. Thus, it is concluded that a set of available data into a digital repository that comprehend the requirements improves the information recovery and, therefore, increases the visibility of publication and authors.

Brandão, Felipe Grando January 2016 (has links)
The present study deals with the production, communication and use of scientific and technological information in the context of institutional digital repositories of Brazilian universities, as well as the dissemination and use of the information contained in patent documents.

Ieiri, Aline Yuri January 2016 (has links)
Orientadora: Profa. Dra. / Learning Objects (LOs), are digital or non digital educational resources which can support the educational process, presenting as a main characteristic, its reusability. The can be found in Learning Object Repositories (LORs), which can be defined as digital libraries where stores, catalogs and makes them available. Usability issues in these repositories may be possible obstacles which can make the possibility of reuse, very difficult for the end users, the teachers. One of these issues, is related to the fact that some user interface design presented in some LORs, aren¿t intuitive. This work presents three methods which enable the usability issues detection and how to propose result based, an intuitive and user-friendy Lo-fi prototype. The Systematic Review (Method 1) was performed aiming to identify usability issues in several LORs. Method 2, Heuristic Evaluation, was held with HCI experts, trying to observe issues and difficulties while interacting with 3 LORs: Ariadne, BIOE and MERLOT. Method 3, consists in applying methods from the Design¿s field aiming to propose visual aesthetics of Lo-fi prototype, this is the work¿s final step. Were identified during and after the Systematic Review, that many usability issues were related to user¿s interfaces and also within the systems implementation in these LORs. The results obtained in the Systematic Review and Heuristic Evaluation were important to get data which could add up relevant information related to the usability in those chosen LORs for analysis, in addition, was possible to propose usability checklists for LORs. For the Lo-fi prototype¿s (entitled OAS PARA VOCÊ) conception, were applied methods from the Design¿s field. It is suggested to put into practice in the future, the validation or the usability heuristics for LORs and the implementation of the OAS PARA VOCÊ.
