A Portrayal of Gender and a Description of Gender Roles in Selected American Modern and Postmodern Plays.Copenhaver, Bonny Ball 04 May 2002 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to describe how gender was portrayed and to determine how gender roles were depicted and defined in a selection of Modern and Postmodern American plays. This study was based on the symbolic interaction theory of gender that suggests that social roles are learned over time and are subject to constant reinforcement. The significance of this study was derived from the broad topic of gender because gender issues are relevant to a variety of fields and exploring the effects of gender in one field contributes to the understanding of gender in another field.
The plays in this study were Votes for Women, Robins; Trifles, Glaspell; Our Town, Wilder; Moon for the Misbegotten, O'Neill; The Glass Menagerie, Williams; Death of a Salesman, Miller; A Raisin in the Sun, Hansberry; Funnyhouse of a Negro, Kennedy; Uncommon Women and Others, Wasserstein; Fefu and Her Friends, Fornes; spell #7, Shange; Fool for Love, Shepard; Fences, Wilson; Oleanna, Mamet; and How I Learned to Drive, Vogel.
Two of the study's research questions explored the types of gender roles and behaviors that the characters presented. Two questions focused on considering if the time period or the sex of the playwright were factors in the presentations of gender. Gender behaviors were divided into four categories: Behavior Characteristics, Communication Patterns, Sources of Power, and Physical Appearance. Using narrative analysis techniques, the plays were analyzed for the specific traits in each category.
The majority of the characters were assigned traditional gender roles and displayed traditional gender behavior traits. Based their gender roles and behavior in their roles, characters faced limitations that confined their actions and restricted their choices. Characters experienced consequences for their behaviors, and female characters received harsher punishments for deviant behaviors than male characters. Gender portrayal in Modern plays was more in keeping with traditional patterns than in Postmodern plays. Female playwrights presented more diverse roles for female characters and often explored gender as a major theme in their plays. Where applicable, race, in concert with gender, was an additional factor that governed characters' behaviors by further restricting behavior or possible actions.

This study was concerned with the effectiveness of Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy (NRMT) carried out within a Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship-based (DIR®)/Floortime Framework in addressing the individual needs of children with autism. In NRMT, the child is an active participant in the music making process, playing various instruments that require no formal training. The therapist's task is to improvise music built around the child's musical responses, reactions, responses, and/or movements to engage him or her in a musical experience that will facilitate musical relatedness, communication, socialization, and awareness. The DIR® model provides a comprehensive framework for assessing, understanding, and treating the child. It centers on helping the child master the building blocks of relating, communicating, and thinking through the formulation of relationships via interactive play, using Floortime (a systematic way of working with the children to help them reach their developmental potential). This study sought to determine the effectiveness of NRMT in meeting musical goals specifically established for each individual child, and to conclude if progress in musical goals paralleled progress in non-musical (DIR®) goals. / Music Therapy

<p>Dans ce travail nous abordons deux problèmes non résolus en Probabilité appliquée. Nous les approchons tous deux sous un angle nouveau, en utilisant des outils aussi variés que les chaînes de Markov, les mouvements Browniens, les transformations de Schwarz-Christoffel, les processus de Poisson et la théorie des temps d'arrêts optimaux. <p><p>Problème de la ruine pour N joueurs<p><p>Le problème de la ruine pour $N$ joueurs est un problème célèbre dont la solution pour $N=2$ est connue depuis longtemps. Nous l'abordons premièrement en toute généralité, en le modélisant comme un problème d'absorption pour une chaîne de Markov. Nous obtenons les distributions associées à ce problème et nous décrivons un algorithme (appelé {it folding algorithm}) permettant de diminuer considérablement le nombre d'opérations nécessaires à une résolution complète. Cette étude nous permet de mettre en avant un certain nombres de relations de récurrence satisfaites par les probabilités de ruines associées à chaque état de la chaîne de Markov. Nous étudions ensuite une version asymptotique du problème de la ruine pour 3 joueurs. Nous utilisons les propriétés d'invariance des mouvements Browniens par transformations conformes pour décrire une résolution de ce problème via les transformations de Schwarz-Christoffel. Cette méthode dépasse le cadre strict du problème de la ruine pour 3 joueurs et s'applique à d'autres problèmes de temps d'atteinte d'un bord par un mouvement Brownien. <p><p>Problème de Robbins<p><p>Ce problème s'inscrit dans le cadre de la théorie des temps d'arrêts optimaux. C'est un problème d'analyse séquentielle dans lequel un observateur examine $n$ variables aléatoires indépendantes de manière séquentielle et doit en sélectionner exactement une sans rappel. L'objectif est de déterminer une stratégie qui permette de minimiser le rang moyen de l'observation sélectionnée. <p><p> Nous décrivons un modèle alternatif de ce problème, dans lequel le décideur observe un nombre aléatoire d'arrivées distribuées suivant un processus de Poisson homogène sur un horizon fixe $t$. Nous prouvons l'existence d'une stratégie optimale pour chaque horizon, et nous montrons que la fonction de perte associée à cette stratégie est uniformément continue sur $R$. Nous décrivons une fonction de perte restreinte qui permet d'obtenir une estimation de la valeur asymptotique du problème, et nous obtenons la valeur asymptotique associée à des stratégies spécifiques. Nous obtenons ensuite une équation intégro-diffférentielle sur la fonction de perte associée à la stratégie optimale. Finalement nous étudions les valeurs asymptotiques du problème et nous les comparons à celles du problème en temps discret. A Random Walk Version of Robbins' ProblemAllen, Andrew 12 1900 (has links)
Robbins' problem is an optimal stopping problem where one seeks to minimize the expected rank of their observations among all observations. We examine random walk analogs to Robbins' problem in both discrete and continuous time. In discrete time, we consider full information and relative ranks versions of this problem. For three step walks, we give the optimal stopping rule and the expected rank for both versions. We also give asymptotic upper bounds for the expected rank in discrete time. Finally, we give upper and lower bounds for the expected rank in continuous time, and we show that the expected rank in the continuous time problem is at least as large as the normalized asymptotic expected rank in the full information discrete time version.

Die Reaktionen von Hochschullehrern und Unternehmern auf Bildungsreformen und -expansion in Westdeutschland und Britannien nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg sind Gegenstand dieser Arbeit. Sie untersucht, wie sich beide Gruppen zu Hochschul- und Schulreformen im Besonderen und zur sozialen Öffnung im Allgemeinen äußerten. Welche bildungs- und hochschulpolitischen Interessen verfolgten diese Gruppen? Mit welchen Argumentationen versuchten sie, ihre Interessen durchzusetzen? Spielten bürgerliche Werte und Bildungsideale dabei noch eine Rolle? Herrschte eine bildungspolitische Werte- und Interessenübereinstimmung zwischen Hochschullehrern und Unternehmern, und knüpften sie gemeinsame Netzwerke zur Durchsetzung dieser Interessen? Die Arbeit bietet im ersten Teil einen Überblick über bildungspolitische Veränderungen und über gesellschaftliche Entwicklungstendenzen der Vermögens- und Einkommensverteilung sowie der Einordnung der beiden Akteursgruppen in die jeweilige Prestige- und Sozialstruktur ihrer Länder. Im zweiten Teil folgt eine Analyse ihrer bildungspolitischen Aussagen auf Hinweise einer Existenz von bürgerlichen Werten und Abgrenzungsversuchen gegenüber nicht-bürgerlichen Schichten. Im dritten Teil werden schließlich bildungspolitische Netzwerke und Gremien nach ihrer Zusammensetzung und -arbeit betrachtet. Damit möchte die Arbeit einen Beitrag zur Frage leisten, ob nach 1945 weiterhin ein Bürgertum mit einem Berufsgruppen übergreifenden Standesbewusstsein existierte, oder ob dieses in einzelne Berufsgruppen wie Hochschullehrer und Unternehmer mit je eigenen Interessen und Identifikationen zerfallen war. / This thesis compares the responses of university lecturers and business people to educational reform and expansion in West Germany and Britain in the postwar period. It examines how these groups reacted to increased social mobility in general, and university and school reform in particular. How did they attempt to persuade others of their position? Did middle-class values and educational ideals play a role? To what extent did the values and interests of university lecturers and business people intersect, and did they create networks to achieve their goals? The first part of this study surveys the postwar social and educational landscape, changes in income and wealth distribution, as well as the position of university lecturers and business people in each country. Part two analyses both groups’ positions on education, with particular reference to the existence of middle-class values and attempts to define themselves in relation to other classes. The final part explores how networks and bodies on education issues were set up and how they pursued their work. This study contributes to the debate as to whether a middle-class group identity existed in the postwar period, or whether this identity had disintegrated into individual professional groups, each with their own interests and identifications.
