Petroleum Service Projects in the Gulf of Guinea

The goal of this record of study is to examine the major facets involved in managing several petroleum service projects located in three different countries in the Gulf of Guinea simultaneously, while effectively engaging in business development activities for the Oil and Industrial Services Group (OIS). This work also furnishes adequate background on related subject matters to enable understanding of the projects presented. The petroleum services sector is the back bone of the oil and gas industry. Services companies are vital to the success of all petroleum and energy producers in the USA, the Gulf of Guinea and the world. There is a need and demand for these service companies because they play various roles such as logistics, drilling, construction, dredging, pipe laying, procurement, food supply, human resource supply, etc. The Gulf of Guinea comprises of countries from west and central Africa. This project was limited to Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon. This area holds the largest petroleum reserves in Africa and plays a vital role in the global supply of petroleum. The Oil and Industrial Services Group (OIS), plans to establish herself as one of the leading petroleum service companies in this gulf. To manage this expansion, I have taken the role of Gulf of Guinea manager to apply my background as a petroleum engineer as well as my business skills to build a successful division of the company. This work provides a record of study of the management of services, projects and contracts carried out by the OIS group in the gulf of Guinea. The following are the specific projects in the Gulf of Guinea that I participated in: Managing delivering, maintenance and marketing of offshore vessels, Offshore pipe laying project, Integrated pipeline maintenance project, Development a petroleum technical training facilities, Agbami pipe insulation project, Engineering lift project and Capital budgeting analysis for potential investments. The details of the specific tasks of the job, including objectives, description, managerial role, nontechnical aspects, approaches, information sources, discussions and contributions are projected in the body of this literature.

Key Criteria in Project Evaluation : A study of New Service Development

<p>Project evaluation is concerned with indicators setting and performance tracking along the life of a project. It plays an essential role to the success of any project and therefore demands special attention. At the heart of this process lies a system of criteria one has to take into account when performing the evaluation. Our thesis considers this problem in a particular context, namely New Service Development (NSD) projects. The topic is of our interest because innovation (hence NSD) has become an inherent aspect of service industry while the research dedicated to NSD project evaluation is rather limited. Our thesis aims at understanding the purposes, the process of evaluating NSD projects and pointing out specific criteria included during the evaluation of NSD projects. As a result, the research question pursuing is: ‘What are key Evaluation Criteria for New Service Development projects?’ From the literature review on project evaluation and new service development, our study reveals a list of eight important criteria of evaluation. This consists of three financial criteria: (1) profitability, (2) production cost, (3) return on investment; and five non-financial criteria: (4) strategic fit, (5) marketing criteria, (6) corporate social responsibilities, (7) information quality, and (8) facilitating factors. From empirical perspective, qualitative approach is applied to collect data through three case studies and a series of semi-structured interviews with seventeen respondents in Albania, Italy, Sweden and Vietnam, from companies offering various types of service. The case studies build comprehensive understanding on the process of new service development, of project evaluation for NSD whereas interviews check the transferability of the three cases and identify evaluation criteria employed in practice. The empirical results were analyzed in comparison with the arguments found from literature. Regarding the research question, the study found that the set of evaluation criteria collected from empirical study fits with the list of eight criteria proposed by literature. Among this set, two main criteria ‘strategic fit’ (4) and ‘customer satisfaction’ which is apart of ‘marketing criteria’ (5) are recommended as ‘must’ for the evaluation process on any type of NSD project. Findings of this research contribute to the existing knowledge provided by both academic and practitioners regarding both project management field and new service development area, by suggesting a set of key criteria that should be used as guidance in order to succeed with evaluation of NSD projects.</p>

[pt] Esta dissertação propõe uma ferramenta de apoio aos tomadores de decisão das instituições sociais, no processo de seleção e avaliação de seus projetos. O modelo foi construído a partir da necessidade mapeada, no processo de planejamento estratégico de uma organização de cunho social, de se obter indicadores de avaliação objetivos, alinhados com sua Missão e Visão, com vistas a iniciar um processo de gestão estratégica institucional. O modelo proposto, inspirado no Balanced Scorecard, respeita as características de uma instituição de cunho social, que não visa lucro e apresenta outras especificidades se comparada às empresas privadas. Foram utilizados métodos qualitativos e quantitativos para mapear os principais indicadores de avaliação dos projetos da organização, obtendo-se um modelo aderente às necessidades da instituição estudada. Como resultado, foi criada a Matriz de Avaliação de Projetos, que busca alinhar os projetos desenvolvidos à estratégia do negócio, possibilitando a priorização de projetos e o descarte daqueles não alinhados com os objetivos estratégicos da organização. O modelo propicia a padronização da análise de projetos, viabilizando a avaliação dos projetos realizados ou propostos em função do seu desempenho em relação aos indicadores estabelecidos, a realocação de investimentos e a remodelagem dos projetos de acordo com as estratégias corporativas. Os resultados preliminares sugerem que a Matriz proposta se configura útil como instrumento de seleção e avaliação de projetos sócio-culturais, bem como se mostra uma ferramenta apropriada de feedback, de aprendizado organizacional e de alinhamento estratégico. / [en] This paper proposes a tool to support decision-makers of social institutions in the process of selection and evaluation of their projects. The proposed model was created out of necessity mapped in the organization s strategic planning process, to obtain indicators for evaluating objectives aligned with its mission and vision and with aims of starting a institutional strategic management process. The proposed model, inspired by the Balanced Scorecard, respects the characteristics of a social institution, is not-profit and presents other special features when compared to private companies. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to map the key indicators for evaluating the organization s projects, thereby obtaining a model adhering to the needs of the institution studied. As a result, the Matrix Assessment Project was created, which seeks to align developed projects to the business strategy, enabling the prioritization of projects and discarding those not aligned with the organization s strategic goals. The model provides standardization of project analysis, enabling the assessment of projects carried out or proposed on the basis of their performance in relation to the established indicators, the reallocation of investments and redevelopment of projects in accordance with corporate strategies. Preliminary results suggest that the proposed matrix is configured as a useful tool for selection and evaluation of socio-cultural projects, as well as an appropriate feedback tool, organizational learning and strategic alignment.

Applying Earned Value Managementin Service Projects : A Case Study at Saab Surveillance / Tillämpning av Earned Value Management i Service Projekt

For organisations to stay competitive, continuous improvements and development are needed.Organisations handling complex services, structured in projects, find difficulties in understanding the project performance. Understanding the project performance is important in order to achieve the ability to implement improvements and development activities in projects. Furthermore, project performance needs to be understandable for the whole organisation in order to be able to prioritize. There are several applicable methods available for handling the evaluation of performance. One method is Earned Value Management, EVM, which incorporates project scope, schedule and cost parameters in order to create project control.The purpose of this study is to investigate how EVM could be implemented for evaluating performance in projects handling repair and maintenance based on the EVM standard ANSI/EIA-748. The purpose is also to identify needed adaptations in the projects to make it possible to implement EVM. The EVM standard contains important steps and activities needed in order to be able to aggregate values and evaluate performance.The result of this study presents adaptations needed for EVM implementation based on the EVM standard ANSI/EIA-748. The study concludes that some structural and managerial changes need to be done before EVM can be implemented. The organisation needs to formulate common guidelines for structuring work and organisations, as well as formulate and define common reporting structures for documentation and reporting. In addition, the way of handling planning, and budgeting need to be reviewed and customised. The organisation also needs to continuously work with the knowledge and understanding about the importance of the business and the evaluation, to create a successful EVM implementation and a sustainable business. / För att organisationer ska kunna vara konkurrenskraftiga krävs kontinuerlig förbättring och utveckling. Organisationer som är organiserade i projekt och som hanterar komplexa tjänster, finner svårigheter i att förstå projektets prestation. Detta är viktigt för att kunna genomföra förbättringar och utvecklingsaktiviteter. Dessutom måste projektets prestation kunna förstås av hela organisationen för att skapa möjligheter att prioritera. Det finns flera tillgängliga metoder som kan användas för att hantera detta. En metod är Earned Value Management (EVM), som innehåller projektomfång, tidsplan och kostnadsparametrar för att skapa projektstyrning.Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur EVM kan implementeras för att utvärdera prestanda i projekt som hanterar service och underhåll, baserat på EVM-standarden ANSI/ EIA-748. Syftet är också att identifiera nödvändiga anpassningar i projekten, för att göra det möjligt att implementera EVM. EVM-standarden innehåller viktiga steg och aktiviteter som krävs för att kunna aggregera värden och utvärdera prestanda.Resultatet av denna studie presenterar anpassningar som behövs för implementering av EVM, baserat på EVM-standarden ANSI / EIA-748. Studien drar slutsatsen att vissa strukturella och ledande förändringar måste göras innan EVM kan implementeras. Organisationen måste formulera gemensamma riktlinjer för strukturering av arbete och organisationer, samt formulera och definiera gemensamma strukturer för dokumentation och rapportering. Dessutom måste sättet att hantera planering och budgetering granskas och anpassas. Organisationen måste också kontinuerligt arbeta med kunskap och förståelse om verksamhetens betydelse och utvärdering, för att skapa en framgångsrik EVM-implementering och en hållbar verksamhet.
