Bailie's party of 1820 settlers

Nash, M D January 1981 (has links)
From preface: This study of the British settlers of 1820 in South Africa uses one party of emigrants as a unit of historical research. In unfolding their story, it attempts to discover how far the standard assumptions about the 1820 settlement are borne out by the historical facts. No systematic set of hypotheses for investigation was established in advance; instead, the structure of the thesis has been determined by the course of the narrative, and the main issues have emerged spontaneously as it has progressed. Although the chronology has been maintained as far as possible, the narrative itself does not follow an entirely straightforward course. The emigrant party of eighty-four men and their families under the leadership of John Bailie which is the subject of the study was officially subdivided five weeks after landing at Algoa Bay, and the dispersal of its members to the established towns of the colony began even sooner. At the end of the three-year period laid down as a residential qualification by Government, less than a third remained to claim land on the party's location in Albany.

The reminiscences of Thomas Stubbs, 1820 - 1877

McGeoch, Robert Thomas January 1965 (has links)
The "Reminiscences" of Thomas Stubbs are one of several such compositions which have survived from the 1820 Settlers. The manuscript offers one of the fullest and most lively accounts of frontier life, and the experiences of the Settlers as seen through the eyes of Thomas Stubbs. The object of this thesis has been to reconstruct the life of Thomas Stubbs which has proved an arduous yet absorbing task and to comment upon and evaluate some of the views Stubbs expressed when he wrote the "Reminiscences" between 1874 and 1875, as well as to test, where possible, the validity of the opinions and sentiments formed during a half-century's acquaintance with the Eastern frontier of the Cape of Good Hope.

The settlers in the Central Hill Country of Palestine during iron age I (ca1200-1000 BCE) : where did they come from and why did they move?

Russell, Irina 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the religious practices of the settlers in the central highlands of Palestine, during the pre-monarchic period (ca 1200-1000 BCE; the so-called ‘period of the Judges’), as revealed by archaeology (cultic artifacts and sites, as well as burial customs and practices). The religious practices of the settlers have been shown to reflect continuity with, and were practically indistinguishable from, those of the Late Bronze Canaanite cult, suggesting that the majority of the settlers were originally Canaanites, most probably from the coastal city-states (ie, the religious practices have been used as an ‘ethnic marker’). It has also been proposed that one of the motivating factors for the migration of people from the coastal region to the central highlands was a fairly dramatic climatic shift, one which resulted in the area becoming increasingly and significantly drier from the late 13th century BCE until about 900 BCE. / Thesis (M.A. (Biblical Archaelogy))

January 2010 (has links)
Orientador: José Geraldo Alberto Bertoncine Poker / Banca: Pedro Geraldo Tosi / Banca: Lúcia Arrais Morales / Resumo: A atual conjuntura política brasileira parece oferecer uma realidade democrática pouco vista antes no país. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The present political situation Brazilian seems to offer a democratic reality uncommonly seen before in the country. However, if one looks at the matter more attentively, one perceives that there is a disagreement between the political and institutional reality and our history. One can say that there was no concrete consolidation from the historical-sociological viewpoint in which a greater notice of the quarrels and resistences of the social movements and their way of life could be viewed as an element capable of contributing for the construction of a really democratic and citizen society. In this case, this research aims at understanding the fight for taking the land over in the region of Bico do Papagaio which is situated in the northest area of Tocantins state. One has as a concern to raise clues on the particularities of the settlers as regards the agrarian conflicts in the context of the political repression in the military period of government (1964-1985). It is intended to discuss how the resistance of a marginalized group took place so in the political-ideological and in the economic as well when we observe the process of implementation of the developmentist projects for the area. That is to say, one intends to understand now the settlers acted within the modernization process and preserved traits of a tradition expressed in a socialization in which the earth is considered as a territory, something that acts as an aglutination element for the construction of the fight/resistence. In this way, our hypothesis is to understand the actions of the settlers and how such actions evolve inside of a specific tradition, since that in a situation of resistence is overwhelms the relevance of the culture as an affirmation of identity. In this perspective, the basis of research will be the oral... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Therefore, we structured two fronts of research: a) the construction of a theoretical framework guided by the concept of associative culture and cooperative system and; b) the guided analysis framework in the training process, colonization and settlement of West mesoregion of Paraná State and the food agricultural cooperatives establishment related to that region. We identified the food agricultural cooperatives and selected them: Copacol (headquartered in the city of Cafelândia), C.Vale (headquartered in the city of Palotina), LAR (headquartered in the city of Medianeira), Coopavel (headquartered in Cascavel) and Copagril (headquartered in the city of Marechal Cândido Rondon). The methodology adopted was the qualitative approach, based on the descriptive-explanatory premise. The descriptive research allowed the analysis and description of the historical, economic and social context of Paraná State and of the West mesoregion, in the first decades of the twentieth century. This analysis allowed the junction and discussion of the elements that led to the creation, expansion and consolidation, over time, of the food cooperative system in the region under study. The explanatory research allowed us to understand the theoretical framework used. So, as the source of data we used secondary data, through bibliographical and documentary research. This methodological base led us to see that in the West mesoregion of Paraná State, the genesis of the five food agricultural cooperatives under investigation was due to the social needs of individuals, the settlers who have established them, since the 1960s. The foundation of these cooperative societies met the economic interests of the farmers, and not just of the government. In this study, the associative culture rescued through the memories of the settlers who established the cooperatives became the cultural touchstone maintained and reproduced by the community structure of the pioneer settlers. The dynamic of living together and community relations remained independent of macroeconomic changes in the country. This gregariousness, entrenched in the social structure of migrants, who settled the West mesoregion of Paraná, guided cooperation initiatives and triggered producer associations, and these ones, in the food agricultural cooperatives of the mesoregion under study.

A language in decline ? :a constrastive study of the use of, and motivation and de-motivation for, learning Afrikaans among two groups of learners at an English medium high school in Cape Town, South Africa

Govender, Manisha January 2010 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / Afrikaans in practice replaced Dutch and became one of South Africa's official languages (along with English) from 1925. It reached the apex of its development and influence during the years of Nationalist party rule and the apartheid regime as a language of officialdom, of the judiciary and education. However, in 1994 nine African languages were afforded official status along with English and Afrikaans in South Africa. Presently, Afrikaans is still taught in the majority of schools in the Western Cape as either a first or second language. This thesis compares and contrasts the language attitudes and motivation towards Afrikaans in two groups of secondary school learners - grade eight and grade eleven learners - at the same school, viz. the Settlers' High School in Parow, a northern suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. At this English medium school, Afrikaans as a second language is a compulsory subject. The thesis also examines the dominant ideologies held towards Afrikaans by the learners and by the school in question which contributes towards shaping their attitudes and motivations for learning the language as well as their actual use of the language. The study finds a correlation between the learners' attitudes towards Afrikaans and their actual patterns of use of the language, which indicates that the use of Afrikaans may be in decline among especially the younger, grade eight, learners. / South Africa

Evaluating support service co-operation in the Netcare-Settlers public private partnership, Grahamstown, South Africa

Mahote, Tulisa January 2015 (has links)
The neo-liberal restructuring of state assets and facilities, which has taken place internationally over the past three decades, as well as in South Africa, has been a matter of great controversy. Privatisation, in particular, has been a polarising issue, especially when applied to fields like healthcare. Supporters of privatisation view it as cutting costs, mobilising funding, expertise and innovation, resulting in improved delivery, and opening possibilities for a spread of ownership. Critics claim the process involves retrenchments, declining services for the (poorer) majority of people, and a focus on the elites as citizens become transformed into customers, and with any economic empowerment going to the already prosperous. This thesis examines these issues by looking at the privatisation of hospitals in South Africa, with a case study of the Netcare-Settlers Public Private Partnership (PPP) (also known as the Settlers Private Hospital) in Grahamstown, South Africa. Netcare is South Africa’s largest private hospital company, and also has substantial operations in the United Kingdom. The thesis sets out the context: a highly inequitable healthcare system in the country, the rise of privatisation in the apartheid and post-apartheid eras, and healthcare privatisation. In terms of the Netcare-Settlers PPP, the thesis examines how the PPP was structured and developed, focusing on the impact of the PPP on non-clinical operations. The thesis argues that the results of the PPP are mixed, that it has greatly improved areas like facilities, maintenance, cleaning and catering, performed less well in increasing the doctor/ patient ratio or in attracting specialists, and is associated with the widespread and problematic use of outsourcing of service workers like cleaners and security. Overall, the PPP has improved healthcare, with some effective sharing of resources between the public and private parts of the hospital, but also relies on a pool of relatively low waged, under-unionised, labour. In terms of the general debate over privatisation, the Netcare-Settlers PPP shows that both supporters and critics have some valid points, and that privatisation in practice is not an either/ or, black/ white, good/ bad proposition, but something more complex. The success and failure of PPPs depend on the details of the contracts, and these can be used to maximise the performance of both the public and private partners. Better contracts may help avoid the uneven results seen at institutions like the Netcare-Settlers PPP.

The Church towns in the middle of the Swedish north : A comparative analysis of the archaeologic material from Åsele and Lycksele church towns

Öqvist, Beatrice January 2021 (has links)
The objective of this bachelor thesis is on Åsele and Lycksele church towns and early settlements in northern Sweden with the purpose of finding out if the archaeological source material shows the same or different results as the historical source material regarding when they were established, what sort of buildings and activities they had and if the proximity to the Sami people had any effect on the settlers. This is done by doing a comparative analysis between Åsele and Lycksele church towns through the excavated source material from archaeological surveys and their related reports.
