Are the Chilean immigrants integrated into the Swedish society? : A study of integration processes among Chilean immigrants in Sweden.

Urzua, Gabriela Alexandra January 2018 (has links)
Sweden is well known for receiving both immigrants and refugees.  People of Chilean heritage, make up the biggest Latin American group in Sweden with approximate 50 000 residents in Sweden being born in Chile or having at least one parent born in Sweden.  Slightly over half of these migrated from Chile. This study will therefore focus on the Chilean integration into a small society, which in this case is Växjö municipality.   This study investigates the extent to immigrants are integrated into Swedish society, and seek to understand the problems and obstacles the Chilean immigrants faces regarding social integration. It is a qualitative field study and using semi-structured interviews to understand and analyze the Chilean immigrants’ integration in Växjö on a micro level. There were ten interviews, with five female and five male participants. The interviews were analyzed by using the social integration theory.                                                      The findings are complex and demonstrate that most of the participants feel part of Swedish society and that most of them see themselves as integrated into the Swedish society. However, the majority of the participants speak very poor Swedish, and do not socialize with Swedish individuals very much. The findings thus contrast the theoretical idea of integration used as an analytical lens, which almost all participants in this study fails to achieve, with their own worldview that they have integrated into Sweden

Sousa, Francisco Pereira de 31 March 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-05-14T12:11:40Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 2329072 bytes, checksum: 5fddd61b59213d924a2274a08364def3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-03-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Habermas understands the law as the main source of social integration and political legitimacy of modern times. The consensus or intersubjective understanding was understudied by him, like what makes possible the democratic life in society, under the mediation of the law, the fundamental agent in effecting and democratic legitimacy of the measures considered democratic. However, although the law at the national level has promoted the formation of a democratic conscience and the defense of the fundamental rights, with the formation of a legal order with cosmopolitan trend, from a post-national plan, the same it is not possible. In the national plan, the legal planiing provides the certainty of a legal security sustained and defended by the State - that provides the respect for fundamental freedoms necessary to the democratic life. This does not apply internationally. The creation of a cosmopolitan government, as intends by Habermas, will not be effective in the solving of these questions while there to be so profound disparities and inequalities between the different national units concerned. In despite of the habermasian affirmative, the law is not able to possibly the social integration and democratic legitimacy in the international plan. His political theory - based on an ethics or theory of discourse, which places the center of the political process the idea of consensus or understanding between the parts - does not apply to current global political realities, where the power (and not the right) is that imposes or establishes the preponderant rules, interests and values.

Linguistic identity and social cohesion in three Western Cape schools

De Kock, Tarryn Gabi January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (MEd (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. / Language is foundational to issues of belonging in contemporary South Africa. The country’s colonial and apartheid history facilitated the differential development and privileging of particular languages alongside the project of racial capitalism (Alexander, 1989). Educational arrangements were affected by these developments because of how black South Africans were economically and socially limited by rudimentary exposure to the primary languages of access (English and Afrikaans). This study argues that this history is what currently influences the movement of black South Africans into the schools they were historically excluded from in former coloured, Indian and white areas, and further that this movement is also encouraged by the promise of greater access to and development in the English language (Fataar, 2015). It suggests that the persisting status of English as lingua franca across state, educational and cultural communications and products requires teaching that is sensitive to the historical relationship of the language to the underdevelopment and undervaluation of local linguistic forms. Moreover, the subject English and its embedded values and norms (included in the compulsory texts and textbook) is a critical area of enquiry for thinking through issues of social cohesion and belonging. Through case studies of three Cape Town teachers, this study argues that a range of influences affect how language and meaning are constructed in English classrooms, and that learners experience these influences to their own identities in different and often conflicting ways.

Neves, Maíra de Faria January 2011 (has links)
This work gets in the context of discussions about the transformations occurring in the so-called network capitalism and, therefore, takes as its analysis object the experiences of executives working in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The choice of these professionals is based on the understanding that they embody the paradigmatic form the framework that has been produced and circulated within the sphere of work and that came to characterize the current phase of capitalist development. Thus, we propose a reflection on the possibility of this work - based on the principle of normative individualism, manifested in the form of self realization in order – to maintain itself as the main matrix of social integration in contemporary societies. We question how this kind of labor may represent also a form of social contribution of a moral nature, in terms of production and dissemination of principles, values, norms and practices that bind together individuals and society as a whole. For this meaning, we conducted semi-structured interviews with executives of that sector. The findings obtained lead us the formation of a "new" moral based on notions of moral self-realization and efficiency, wich the consequences in terms of social integration will be problematized here.

AvaliaÃÃo do Programa Conviver na Perspectiva do Idoso Participante.

Mary Anne LibÃrio de PatrÃcio Ribeiro 17 August 2011 (has links)
This research aimed at evaluating the actions of the Program âLiving Togetherâ the elderly as a strategy to put into practice the National Policy of Social Welfare, in Fortaleza. Its purpose was also aim to calculate the number of elderly patients from 2003 to 2009 and to analyze the level of satisfaction in their living; it also aimed at estimating if there had been any changes in the lives of the participants since they had joined the Program. Another objective of this research is to suggest improvements and eventual enhancements in the methods currently used, based upon the results which had been collected during the above mentioned period. The study was conducted in eight community centers of the Department of Labor and Social Development of the State of CearÃ, located in Fortaleza, which run this program through Support Groups. The research consisted of a quantitative study associated with the use of documentary and secondary data. Data collection took place from 01/06/2010 to 31/07/2010. The sample comprised 262 seniors out of 820 elderly who had participated in the groups for no less than six months. We used a questionnaire which was applied to the groups of elderly with the purpose of investigating their socioeconomic profiles and their level of satisfaction regarding the activities which had been put into practice in the groups from 2003 to 2009. The demographic and socioeconomic data were grouped according to absolute and relative frequency and arranged in frames and tables. Data analysis was carried out based upon the key assumptions Program âLiving Togetherâ and the National Policy for Social Assistance according to the most up-to-date literature related to this subject. The results of our research were, in general, the following: Most of the subjects in our study are female, widowed, single or divorced. They all had low educational level, and from the hinterland of the state of CearÃ; most of them reside with their sons, daughters or other relatives; they are retired people or receive the Benefit of âContinuous Supportâ. A certain lack of planning among community centers and the Groups was found. It was observed that the Groups develop without a major connection with the other programs and projects that could benefit the elderly. However, in spite of a few weak points detected, the subjects evaluated positively the âLiving Togetherâ Program, indicating substantial changes in their life routine, a sound interaction with other groups and with their family members as well as increased provision and improved self-esteem. It is legitimate to conclude that the program must go through a process of redirection of its goals and that the Program should never fall into the hands of the municipalities, something which would make future assessments more difficult. Likewise, it is felt that the Program should undergo a process of diversification of activities by focusing on the professional training of participants and the prevention of dementia, greater coordination among the Coexistence groups and other programs, projects and services of the Community Centers, professional qualification of personnel, ensuring a regular state budget enough to cover the existing expenses that the activities involve and to extending them, expanding coverage, planning of joint actions with other public policies involving Aged care; elderly participation in the planning of interventions, based on their needs, wants and desires, recognizing their autonomy and ability to propose improvements in their lives.

Among the contributions of this study are the critic vision of the interviewed, who are against a discrimination by society where exclusion and prejudice exist, and the meaning and importance of work on their lives, leading to independence, self esteem, identity and social participation.

A criação do Parque Natural Municipal Itaim e sua potencialidade como catalisador de transformações socioambientais / The establishment of Itaim Municipal Nature Park and its potential to catalyse socioenvironmental improvments

Gabriella Roesler Radoll 30 May 2014 (has links)
Four natural parks are being created in the city of Sao Paulo as result from an agrément reached by the Brazilian Road Authority (Dersa), municipal and State authorities. These parks were designed to compensate the environmental impact of the new Rodoanel Trecho Sul highway. This study analyses the impact of the \"Parque Natural Municipal Itaim\", not only from an environmental perspective, but also as a catalyst for social transformation in its neighboring communities. This park is situated in the poor suburbs of Sao Paulo, an area where rural and urban settings co-exist. The communities in the surroundings of the park are extremely poor and marginalized, lacking all sorts of service, leisure, cultural and educative activities. In this context, the park plays a fundamental role, not only from its inherent environmental benefits, but also by offering a place where the local communities can meet, enjoy and where they have access to social and educative initiatives promoted by the park. In this context, the park has also a central social role providing a jump-start in offering access to leisure and incorporating these poor communities in the city. This park should have a key social importance to them, marginalized communities that are usually neglected by local authorities, with limited access to basic public services. The study emphasizes the importance of the park in facilitating the regional environmental connectivity and as a fundamental transformation agent for the surrounding communities by analyzing demographical and socioeconomic data, cartographs and thematic charts combined with the qualitative data and interviews collected in loco. The study also made extensive use of qualitative data gathered in loco in order to understand how the park is viewed from the perspective of the individuals who live in its vicinity - how they perceive and appreciate their landscape and the educational role of the park in sensitizing and stimulating the local populations to the importance and role of the local green areas, either the ones that exist today or that will be created in the future. The singular and innovative aspects of the park are reemphasized in a moment when authorities discuss budgetary cuts, under staffing and face organizational challenges. This could potentially limit the scope of this project that is still being developed. However, there is still time and we (NEP-FAUUSP) hope there is enough commitment to deliver the full scope of the park, that would have a key role in improving the life of adjacent communities.

This research intended to contribute to the study of children's musical development, specifically to the understanding of some aspects of children¿s harmonic perception. The purpose of the present study was, on one hand, to describe how children acquire the knowledge of key membership and harmony in children of 6-9 years old that came from lower-middle class families and attended classes of introduction to music and group instrumental teaching in a socio-cultural project in São Paulo; and, on the other hand, to measure the development of harmonic perception of these children in a cross-sectional study. The theoretical framework has been found in the areas of knowledge of education, music education, sociology and psychology. After the reviewing of literature a fieldwork was done. The study was conducted with 74 children at Guri Project in the city of Sorocaba, São Paulo, their parents and 8 music educators who worked at Guri Project at the time of the research. In field research, individual interviews with participants were conducted in addition to questionnaires with parents and music educators. A test session was performed to asses children¿s perception of key membership and harmony regarding two tasks of an harmonic perception test. The variables considered were age, gender, duration of music study, type of instrument studied (harmonic or melodic), type of teaching methodology of the educator and socio-economic and cultural context of the participants. The results of this study indicate a significant correlation between the development of harmonic perception and age of participants, as well as other important sub-variables. Children in our sample perceived differences in the elements of harmony and key membership within a familiar song but not within an unfamiliar song. Our results converge with previous findings suggesting that children are sensitive to key membership and harmony in familiar songs before they can generalize this knowledge to unfamiliar songs. Music training in the context of group instrumental teaching of harmonic or melodic instruments, introduction to music and choir in Guri Project showed no apparent influence on test performance. Results showed that children gradually develop harmonic perception and key membership by enculturation, by cumulative exposure to Western tonal music, yet previous studies have shown that musical training accelerates the development of harmonic perception in these ages, our results suggest that this training must be specific. The study¿s limitations and implications for group instrumental teaching and music education in general are discussed at the end of this research / Doutorado / Fundamentos Teoricos / Doutora em Música

The New Greek Tragedy: Discordance between Greece and the European Union in the Mediterranean Refugee Crisis

Pranzatelli, Bridget 01 January 2018 (has links)
After the onset of the Syrian civil conflict, over one million refugees and asylum seekers landed on Greece’s shores, and were met with chaotic asylum processing, uncoordinated non-governmental organizations, and generally debilitating discordance among all actors responsible for service provisions. (UNHCR, n.d.) Despite a long history of an obligation to burden sharing, the European Union failed to implement cross-regional policies to support Greece. And despite building policies to expedite immigration processing, the SYRIZA-led government in Greece failed to implement substantive improvement to the migratory pathway. Finally, this mismanagement is fatal, and has resulted in migrant isolation, entrapment, and in the worse cases, death. This research seeks to identify the causes of the persistence of this painful mismanagement of the humanitarian crisis, especially within camps, in Greece. To answer this question, this research will look at two common explanations for the mismanagement of camps: those that blame the Greek federal government and those that blame the European Union. Ultimately, however, this research will argue that it is the relationship between both the Greek state and the EU, marked by tension and discordance, which makes the problem of mismanagement of the crisis so persistent.

L’intégration sociale étudiante : relations et effets au sein des parcours de réussite en Licence / Social integration of college students : links and effects within “Licence” course achievement

Berthaud, Julien 08 December 2017 (has links)
Since 1970’s and 1980’s, educational research reveals the importance of interactional process in the explanation of student careers, especially with Tinto’s work (1975), by demonstrating the significant influence of social integration on student persistence in university. However, the effects on students’ academic success are rarely explored. Moreover, there is no consensus on the conceptualization of this explanatory factor since it shows different dimensions of social integration. From data collected from 1365 students enrolled in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade of common “Licence”, this research proposes firstly to improve measurement of student social integration as a multidimensional concept. Then the sources and conditions of social integration are examined through the influence of contextual, institutional and individual factors. In this context, the transversal skills are considered as an illustration of student social abilities, among others. Statistical analyses show that students have different needs for social integration, depending on their age, gender and reasons for study. First, the academic context defines the opportunities offered to students for social integration. Moreover, it appears that some skills related to emotional management and collaboration turn into resources that promote social integration. Results lead to identify four different profiles of student social integration in “Licence” course. Lastly, questions arise about the role of social integration and transversal skills in student careers and factors of student achievement. Our results reveal that student social integration has a raw and positive effect on the probability of success and performances, through academic interactions and feeling of integrating. When the classical factors of student achievement are taking into account, the influence of social integration appears to be weak or lost. Only the feeling of integrating reduces the risk of student drop-outs. On the other hand, the transversal skills including the taste for work and the self-confidence prove to be powerful predictors of students' success and performances. While student social integration doesn’t seem to be a key factor with mediating effects on academic achievement, it appears to be another feature of student success profiles. Moreover, student social integration produces indirect effect on performances through academic commitment.
