Commodified Evil's Wayward Children: Black Metal and Death Metal as Purveyors of an Alternative Form of Modern Escapism

Forster, Jason John January 2006 (has links)
This study focuses on Black Metal and Death Metal music as complimentary forms of commodified evil, which, in contrast to most other forms of commodified evil, provide an alternative form of modern escapism. In particular, it demonstrates that in glorifying evil their respective natures and essences effectively suggest to us that the ability to overcome our problems, and cope with the world's atrocities, lies not in the vain hope that justice will prevail, but rather, in embracing evil and actively cultivating a desensitizing ethos of utter indifference to the plight and suffering of others. In addition, because Black Metal and Death Metal have both generated their own distinct sub-cultures, which are predominantly populated by marginalized youths, this study simultaneous begs the question: What is it that motivates them to produce and/or endorse forms of music, and thereby become members of sub-cultures, which ostensibly promote such a negative world view? Consequently, it also demonstrates some of the important ways in which they can serve to help their proponents regain a sense of power and control over their lives. It then concludes by looking at Black Metal and Death Metal's (potential) social effects - both negative and positive.

The Effects of Up-regulated Happiness on Others’ Prosocial Behavior: The Role of Cultural Thinking Style

Hideg, Ivona 13 December 2012 (has links)
Past research has suggested that up-regulating displays of happiness leads to positive social outcomes. In my dissertation research, I suggest that whether the up-regulation of displays of happiness leads to positive outcomes depends on observers’ culture. I developed and tested a model of how one aspect of observers’ culture, analytic-holistic thinking, influences the relation between expressers’ displays of happiness and observers’ prosocial behavior. In two studies, I examined how observers’ analytical-holistic thinking moderates the effect of expressers’ inauthentic displays of happiness (regulated through surface acting) and expressers’ authentic displays of happiness (regulated through deep acting) on observers’ prosocial behavior and trust inferences. In a laboratory experiment (Study 1), observers’ analytical-holistic thinking moderated the effect of project leaders’ inauthentic displays of happiness (vs. neutral emotional displays) on observers’ trust in the expresser, but not on observers’ prosocial behavior (time taken to edit a cover letter). In a field fundraising experiment (Study 2), observers’ analytical-holistic thinking moderated the effect of fundraisers’ inauthentic displays of happiness (vs. authentic displays of happiness) on observers’ trust in fundraisers, intentions to volunteer for the charity organization, and monetary donations to the charity organization. Further, observers’ trust in fundraisers mediated the moderating effect of observers’ analytical-holistic thinking on the relation between fundraisers’ inauthentic displays of happiness and observers’ intention to volunteer. Contributions to the literature on the social effects of emotions and to the literature on fundraising and helping as well as practical implications are discussed.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Michael Schulz_Final.docx: 788973 bytes, checksum: de2b96c0afbdf7c4c12d9d5090857d66 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-11-08 / We describe a performance gap in project management standards and pose the question, 'What is the best methodology for addressing this gap?' The purpose of our exploration is to measure the relationship between social factors and project performance as a function of two variables; unity and diversity. The general objective is to define the gap through the lens of our philosophical worldview and apply a methodology for measuring it. In so doing, we seek to raise awareness of the importance of a projects social performance as a success criteria. Using a theoretical social health model as our tool, we quantify the social performance potential of a case study project environment as a numeric measurement. Ethnography and a mixed method approach focus attention on context and its synthesis of findings. Findings identify improvements in people processes which can be applied to the practices and procedures of global practitioners. Specifically, we refer to social engineering improvements in the planning, executing, and monitoring processes. Our analysis of the model’s output was largely supportive of the performance findings of the case study environment. However, it revealed some technical flaws in the models structure requiring improvement. First, refinements are needed to account for imbalances in individual nodal weights based on systemic failures, which put performance potential at risk. Second, our measurement of performance potential challenges the traditional criteria of project success. Based on the findings, we describe a scenario where social design may well be incompatible with the widely accepted definition of project success. We must then consider what is more costly. Changing an organizations culture, or redefining success according to the performance potential of the organization encountered.

Le mitard, un analyseur de la discipline pénitentiaire / The shoe as an analyser of carceral discipline

Lambert, Gérard 26 September 2014 (has links)
This research was conducted from 2005 to 2009 based on a study of the 222 disciplinary proceedings recorded at the registry of the Vesoul remand centre as well as on interviews with the convicts who were punished for transgressing the prison’s bylaw. It aims at measuring the social effects of carceral discipline. As a number of researches are already devoted to the practical aspect of the carceral issue (such as penal policies or institutional organisation), it has seemed relevant to complete these approaches by looking into how the various actors in the carceral field (inmates, guardians, heads of staff) view the power relations as established in prison and how they view the shoe in particular, wich is seen here as the keystone of the carceral structure. A rhetorical analysis of the interviews of the inmates puts into light how the shoe is either tactically used or avoided. It highlights the inmates’ ability to remain active in a context in wich the main stake is to keep and to broaden one’s space of freedom. The contrast between the words of the inmates and the philosophy of the institution questions the ability of prison to deliver on the mission imparted to it by the legislator, i.e. to assist with the social rehabilitation of the incarcerated population. One can even wonder whether carceral discipline does not contribute to the consolidation of the criminal role of inmates through a system of labelling and stigmatization. The conclusions of this analysis grounded in decision theory lead the author to suggest new professional practices, made possible by the implementation of the European Prison Rules, to better match the security imperative and the necessary rehabilitation of convicts

What do consumers say? : Exploring Consumers' Opinion on Femvertising in Fashion

Acharya, Anjali, Ristimäki, Lycke January 2019 (has links)
Fashion advertising has long been repudiated for fostering narrow and stereotypical imagery of women. Today consumers demand advertisements to be inclusive and real in their portrayals. As a result, there is an increasingly visible marketing phenomenon, called Femvertising, which merges the feministic ideology of empowerment and liberty with brand image and sales. The purpose of the study is to explore consumers’ opinions about femvertising by fashion brands. Within this, the thesis seeks to explore how consumers feel about these advertisements and the outcome they perceive these to have. Through snowballed sampling focused on reaching diverse people connected via social media, a wide array of thoughts and perspectives on femvertising is sought to fulfill the purpose. The research employs a mixed method with a deductive approach to analyze its findings in relation to literatures and theories reviewed. The study used an open-ended online questionnaire designed through literature review and advertising theories and distributed it electronically to collect data. Using snowball sampling, the respondents were gathered via social media, who further distributed the questionnaire. The findings demonstrated that our sampling mainly expressed positive responses to the femvertising due to its inclusive, diverse and empowering portrayals. Moreover, these advertisements were viewed as a harbinger of change within the fashion industry. They also, generally view the media and advertising to shape people’s perception about gender roles, albeit if femvertising and its ideals are implemented for the long-term. Within this, respondents also urged brands to ‘walk the talk’ and implement the portrayed ideals within their own businesses’ functioning for larger impact. The findings are useful for fashion marketers and researchers, by showing how femvertising within popular media culture is expected to push forward ideals of feminism both within the fashion industry and society. This thesis contributes to the knowledge of consumers’ opinions and perspectives on femvertising and its potential to profit brands and engender more empowerment and liberty to female gender-based roles.

A Social Analysis of Grazing Management on National Forest Lands: A Case Study in Catron County, New Mexico

Watts, Alexis S. 01 May 1999 (has links)
The rural west in this country faces increased national pressure concerning the iii management of natural resources on public lands. Issues regarding natural resource management are becoming more important as they continue to affect rural communities and capture the attention of a variety of interest groups. Natural resource managers are increasingly required to consider social dimensions of resource use and management. Lack of consideration in these areas can lead to dissatisfied, and even hostile, local residents and interest groups. Often land managers face criticism from many groups at once as a result of management decisions. This study analyzed a particular resource issue in a particular region of the west: grazing management in Catron County, New Mexico. The findings indicate a complex social structure with an historical base in natural resource dependence, and a personal independence from highly regulated grazing management. Changes in national legislation and changes in the Forest Service over time have contributed to the erosion of relationships between the Forest Service and ranchers and environmentalists. A socially informed, pragmatic and proactive approach to grazing management is currently lacking in Catron County.

Psychosocial effects of participation in rituals of transitional justice / Efectos psicosociales de la participación en rituales de justicia transicional

Beristaín, Carlos Martín, Páez, Darío, Rimé, Bernard, Kanyangara, Patrick 25 September 2017 (has links)
This article examines the effects of participation in transitional justice rituals. Truth Commissions and trials have instrumental goals of distributive justice, and serve as rituals given their marked symbolic character, helping to achieve reconciliation and the reconstruction of social norms. Evidence suggests that participation in trials increases negative emotion and negative emotional climate. However participants in such rituals have evidenced increased empowerment, despite conditions of limited justice and reparation. Moreover, participation in Gacaca or popular trials in Rwanda, decreases shame in victims, and decreases negative stereotypes and increases individualization of out-groups. Finally, a collective analysis of 16 Latin America nations found that trials and a successful Truth Commission reinforces respect for human rights.

A Study of Viewer Response to the Television Presentation, “Roots”

Cannon, Sherry L. 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this research is to discover viewer response to the television series, "Roots," as revealed through newspapers and magazines published from December, 1976, to June 20, 1977. Thirty-seven articles and 134 interviewee responses were analyzed. The responses with the highest frequency of occurrence in the sample provided eight major categories (listed in the order of highest to lowest frequency of response): inaccuracy/oversimplification, increased awareness, future race relations, white guilt, black anger, future prime time television programming, black pride, and sadness. The predominant appeal of "Roots" was to the emotions of the viewers. Despite the criticism of inaccuracy and/or oversimplification, "Roots" was a timely presentation relating to a current social concern with justice and heritage.

Berggren, Sofie, Sundström, Sofia Unknown Date (has links)
This study was commissioned by the Västerbotten sports federation, who called for an overview of the policies that the municipalities in Västerbotten work after in the field of sport. The study aimed to identify sports policy programs or documents that have been produced by the municipalities, and how they work with them. Furthermore, the study highlights the municipality’s politicians reasoning about sport and recreation-sector, and how their sport policy-work was practiced. The data collection was based on seven interviews and document-collections from the 15 municipalities. The result shows that no municipalities have drawn up a sport policy program, and the lack of common goals, guidelines and a clear vision of the sport and recreation-sector were big. The overall process consisted of running the handling of cases involving the sports industry. Municipalities work with sport and recreational questions dealt largely with preserving the existing level and maintaining the sporting activities already in place.

Among the possible subjects met the life of the pastor who after years of studies, provision of services to the community and society and financial remuneration for their activity is seen in 70 years exonerated. With the dismissal is mandatory as the life of the Presbyterian minister? This dissertation aims to analyze the place occupied by the Presbyterian minister in the church after his retirement, still analyzing the conflicts arising in the social and property after retirement. To do so, use the deductive approach starting from the literature of the subject in various scientific sources, as well as the orders of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil. The intention with this paper to present all the issues related to the topic and present a dignified solution to life after the retirement of the pastor and the same current form given the current increase in life expectancy and quality of life of human beings humans, thus respecting the personal rights of the elderly. This dissertation examines the factual situation of the Presbyterian minister's retirement age of 70. This fact is true throughout the Presbyterian Church of Brazil, but the consequences in social life and heritage of this fact is rarely discussed. The life of a Presbyterian pastor is ruled by his studies and applying them to the community in the teachings of the various possible ways. After years of complicity pastor knows that the age of 70 will be retired, but currently have 70 years is quite different than having 70 years 10, 20 or more years ago. The index of life expectancy increases every year in Brazil and in most countries of the world, moreover, the quality of life is getting better due to greater knowledge of society and the practice of healthy attitudes and medical studies. All these factors lead to questioning the need for retirement at 70, since many times the pastor at that age these days can be at the peak of his knowledge and teachings to the community. However, this is the reality, the jubilation today significantly alter the social aspects of life and property of the pastor. The pastor takes a while in active social life according to their duties and obligations, but if you see a sudden you have to redo their activities, their routine tasks and duties may have several results that will be analyzed in this research. Moreover, as the pastor of retirement when his life has affected the equity principle, unless the same together with the Church to develop a retirement plan. These aspects of extreme importance for the correct and dignified conduct of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil, and other related is to be addressed in this work with the intuit to solve this major issue surrounding the current Presbyterian minister.
