The purpose of this thesis is to do a critical review of the aid organization SOS Children’s Villages text- and video campaigns, from a postcolonial perspective. Our purpose is divided into two questions: Are there colonial values in the advertising campaigns? Which language- and image strategies are used by SOS Children’s Villages to put across their messages? Our material consists of 10 selected video clips, and four printed ads that are made up of an image and a short text, which are part of a campaign named: Inte ett enda barn ska behöva vara ensamt (translation: Not a single child should have to be alone). We have chosen to use text- and image analysis as a method in our review of the material. The main theoretical base in our thesis is postcolonialism, while”the Other” and ”whiteness” are two concepts we have chosen so that we can reach a deeper analytical level. We have analyzed some of the clips from the concept “The White Man’s Burden”, and have discovered that ”The Western World” tries to insert their own values and ideals into ”The Third World”. We have also discovered that the children, in some sequences, are presented as non-human and differentiated from the “white Westerners”. The last chapter in our thesis problematizes how modern technology, as Smartphones, applications and social media, are used to make it easier to give money to charity. We also discuss how “The Western World” can be seen as a contributor to the current situation in “The Third World”, which makes the aspect of high-technology even more interesting.

Contribution à la commande de systèmes non linéaires sous échantillonnage apériodique / Contribution to the control of nonlinear systems under aperiodic samplingOmran, Hassan 24 March 2014 (has links)
This PhD thesis is dedicated to the stability analyzis of nonlinear systems under sampled-data control, with arbitrarily time-varying sampling intervals. When a controller is designed in continuous-time, and then implemented digitally (emulation approach), it is of great interest to provide stability criteria, and to estimate the bound on the sampling intervals which guarantees the stability of the sampled-data system. Whereas several works deal with linear models, the issue has been rarely addressed in a formal quantitative study in the nonlinear case.First, an overview on sampled-data control is presented. Challenges and main methodologies for stability analysis are presented for both the linear time-invariant and the nonlinear cases. Then, local stability of bilinear sampled-data systems controlled by a linear state feedback is considered by using two approaches: the first one is based on hybrid systems theory; the second one is based on the analyzis of contractive invariant sets and is inspired by the dissipativity theory. Both approaches provide sufficient stability conditions in the form of LMI.Finally, the dissipativity–based stability conditions are extended for the more general case of nonlinear systems which are affine in the input, including the case of polynomial systems which leads to conditions in the form of sum of squares (SOS).

The psycho-educational use of narrative therapy among Nguni speaking childrenKabanyane, Nompumelelo Eucalist 30 June 2004 (has links)
Narrative therapy provides an opportunity for children to identify what is important to them. The aim of therapy in this research is to open up space for Nguni speaking children, who in their culture, are not allowed to express their feelings freely. The researcher has found that stories allow children an opportunity to realise that they are all human and that we have come through a process where we have to acknowledge that our existence today is largely dependent on the fact that we are not denying our stories as Nguni speaking people.
From looking at the results of study, it would appear that these children have benefited from the therapy sessions. From three clients a sense of pride and self-worth was often evident at the end of a session and the overall comment made was that each one felt far better than when they had started the sessions. / Educational Studies / M. Previous issue date: 2007-10-22 / This research has as theme of study the constitution of the self of young adults raised in shelters under the care of a social-mother in the Aldeia de Rio Bonito, in São Paulo, institution that s linked to the Aldeias Infantís SOS do Brasil. The general objective is to investigate the meanings attributed to the relations in the institution, as constitutive of the identity of young adults who lived there, up to their adulthood, by exploring the meanings attributed to the shelter, social mother, brothers and village the four pillars of the mission of the institution in the self-descriptions of these young people; intends, also to comprehend the relevance of these meanings in their situation of young adults, due to the need to guarantee the self survival, considered as an indicator of adulthood. It is a qualitative research where the researcher studies, based on the narrative of four young people about themselves, the presence of the four pillars of the institution in these self-descriptions. The relational comprehension of the self constitutionf, common to many systemic theories and the social constructionism, which proposes the meaning as socially constructed in language, gives the bases to the analyses and interpretation of the proposed categories and the other categories constructed through the narratives of the interviewees. The results lead to the presence of the people who integrate the net constituted in the Village and from the village as fundamental voices in the co-construction of an experience of the self, in coherence with the time and the space that constitute the identity. Other social voices, such as prejudice, which came up in the interviews, are part of the restricted identity of these young people, as much as the wide social economic context in the city of São Paulo. The research offers reflection about the co-responsibility between the institution and the external social agents on the way from the Village to the city, towards the adulthood of these emancipated young people from the Village / Esta pesquisa tem como tema de estudo a constituição do si mesmo de jovens adultos criados em casas-lar sob os cuidados de uma mãe-social, na Aldeia de Rio Bonito, em São Paulo, instituição filiada às Aldeias Infantis SOS do Brasil.

Previous issue date: 2011-05-04 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / A reality in black and white: women victims of domestic violence, aims to analyze and understand the impact of actions undertaken in the care services ONG SOS Ação Mulher e Família e Centro de Referência e Apoio à Mulher CEAMO, in life dynamics for women experiencing domestic violence. By chapters, it was drew up a brief historical about the history of women in patriarchal society, the concepts were delineated, as well the issue of domestic violence against women; it was described the dynamics of institutions and studied their interventions with women victims of violence. The methodology used was qualitative research through focus group and individual interviews, which were divided in stages: the first stage of the research consisted of a focus group with five women ex-users of SOS and four individual interviews with women ex-users of CEAMO; in the second step was conducted a focus group with four professionals from different fields of knowledge, techniques of NGO SOS and CEAMO; in the third step, data was analyzed. The results showed that interventions implemented by professionals of those care services, guided by welcoming, listen carefully, with respect to the emotional time of each woman and empowerment, reflected positively on the dynamics of women's lives, transforming their realities and contributing to break the cycle of violence. It was found that the professionals of the two studied institutions perform their job with promptitude, with their initiatives impacting directly on the deconstruction of macho culture, fulfilling, this way, the goal of care services in treat, mitigate and halt the violence against women. It also remains evident that the issue of time to reconcile the emotional of victims, the urgency of action and the emotional of techniques in relation to expected attitudes to be taken by users, has a bounce in the dynamics of these professionals, creating feelings of anxiety and concern / Uma realidade em preto e branco: as mulheres vítimas de violência doméstica, tem por objetivo analisar e compreender a repercussão das ações desenvolvidas nos serviços de atenção ONG SOS Ação Mulher e Família e Centro de Referência e Apoio à Mulher CEAMO, na dinâmica de vida da mulher vítima de violência doméstica.

Qubit control-pulse circuits in SOS-CMOS technology for a Si:P quantum computerEkanayake, Sobhath Ramesh, Electrical Engineering & Telecommunications, Faculty of Engineering, UNSW January 2008 (has links)
Microelectronics has shaped the world beyond what was thought possible at the time of its advent. One area of current research in this field is on the solid-state Si:P-based quantum computer (QC). In this machine, each qubit requires an individually addressed fast control-pulse for non-adiabatic drive and measure operations. Additionally, it is increasingly becoming important to be able to interface nanoelectronics with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. In this work, I have designed and demonstrated full-custom mixed-mode and full-digital fast control-pulse generators fabricated in a silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) CMOS commercial foundry process ?? a radio-frequency (RF) CMOS technology. These circuits are, fundamentally, fast monostable multivibrators. Initially, after the design specifications were decided upon, I characterized NFET and PFET devices and a n+-diffusion resistor from 500 nm and 250 nm commercial SOS-CMOS processes. Measuring their conductance curves at 300 300 K, 4.2 2 K, and sub-K (30 30 mK base to 1000 1000 mK) showed that they function with desirable behaviour although exhibiting some deviations from their 300 300 K characteristics. The mixed-mode first generation control-pulse generator was demonstrated showing that it produced dwell-time adjustable pulses with 100 100 ps rise-times at 300 K, 4.2 2 K, and sub-K with a power dissipation of 12 12 uW at 100 100 MHz. The full-digital second generation control-pulse generator was demonstrated showing accurately adjustable dwell-times settable via a control-word streamed synchronously to a shift-register. The design was based on a ripple-counter with provisions for internal or external clocking. This research has demonstrated that SOS-CMOS technology is highly feasible for the fabrication of control microelectronics for a Si:P-based QC. I have demonstrated full-custom SOS-CMOS mixed-mode and full-digital control circuits at 300 300 K, 4.2 2 K, and sub-K which suitable for qubit control.
