Textbooks teach architecture as conveniently divided into styles and periods, but in reality styles overlap. At the turn-of-the-twentieth century there were three major architectural and decorative movements in the United States: the Aesthetic Movement, the Arts and Crafts Movement, and the American Renaissance Movement. This thesis shows how superficial stylistic labels can be by comparing two very different-seeming houses of the early twentieth century: The Hapke-Geiger House of ca. 1912 in Chesterfield, Virginia, based on a Gustav Stickley Arts and Crafts design, and the Hunton House of 19 14 in Richmond, Virginia, designed in the American Renaissance style by Noland and Baskervill. These homes are very different from one another, but they have three major similarities: They each use an established plan with no essential connection to the building's supposed style, they mix styles, and they have similar kinds of porches. This thesis will pursue these issues to go beyond the superficial stylistic labels and examine how the three major movements of the time are interrelated.

Printed media articles and articles from news portals on the internet are being analysed. The work focuses on the manner death is presented and how the picture of the dead and of the manslayer is created. How the words "murder" and "manslaughter" alternate in various cases, their euphemisms and their relationship to reality is being researched. The method of stylistic and content analysis are being used.

O objetivo desta tese é estudar as escolhas temáticas, lexicais e estilísticas presentes na obra poética de Raul Bopp, produzidas contemporaneamente às manifestações da Antropofagia e detectar, a partir da constituição do ethos antropofágico, a expressão do conceito de brasilidade nas obras mais representativas: Cobra Norato e Urucungo. A recolha e a análise das escolhas foram feitas sob a ótica da Estilística e dos Estudos discursivos, fruto de uma visão interacionista e dialógica que trabalha o signo como uma instância de disputa pelo poder. O poeta, ao recuperar culturas silenciadas, dar voz a elas, e propor antropofagicamente a devoração constante, reconhece e valoriza a alteridade numa época em que a desigualdade entre etnias e raças tinha sido naturalizada. A metáfora da pele de seda elástica, presente em Cobra Norato, não é só representativa dessa obra, ela pode ser esticada à vida e à obra poética de Bopp: um antropófago que correu o mundo em busca de colher antropologicamente informações sobre as culturas para depois registrá-las poeticamente em suas obras. / The main purpose of this thesis is to study the thematic, lexical and stylistic choices in the poetic work of Raul Bopp, produced contemporaneously to Anthropophagy movement, and detect, from the constitution of the anthropophagic ethos, the expression of the concept of brazilianness in two of the most significant Bopp\'s poetic works: Cobra Norato and Urucungo. Previous issue date: 2017-02-13 / The objects of the research are the stories “Amor’, “Uma galinha”, “Feliz Aniversário”
and “Os laços de família”, in Laços de família (2009); “Felicidade clandestina”, “Miopia
progressiva”, in Felicidade clandestina (1998), both by Clarice Lispector, and the
paintings O terapeuta (1941) and A invenção da vida (1928), by René Magritte. The
elements of tenseness and extensiveness of literary and pictorial works are part of the
resources used by artists. The circular character of events establishes the meanings
of the plurality of tensions in each art. The stylistic traits of the writer and the painter
point to ecstasy with varying points of intensity and extensiveness. The feelings of the
characters reveal the eagerness to live in function of the other that undergoes a
metamorphosis of the being in search of their happiness. The general objective is to
analyze the encounter that the characters have with themselves, discovering
themselves to live their happiness intensely. Specific objectives correlate the plural
languages of the literary and pictorial arts. Theorists who give support to the study are
Julio Cortázar (1974); Mikhail Bakhtin (2011); Roland Barthes (1972; 2004); Gilles
Deleuze and Félix Guatarri (1997); Martin Heidegger 1989); A. J. Greimas (1972;
1996); J. P. Sartre (1977); Claude Zilberberg (2006; 2007; 2011), among others. The
poetics of tensivity in language reveals the transformation of signs, the plurality of
meanings manifested in each line, point and color, forming isotopias of the process of
construction of art. / Os objetos da pesquisa são os contos “Amor”, “Uma galinha”, “Feliz Aniversário” e “Os
laços de família”, da obra Laços de família (2009); “Felicidade clandestina” e “Miopia
progressiva”, do livro Felicidade clandestina (1998), ambos de Clarice Lispector, e as
pinturas O terapeuta (1941) e A invenção da vida (1928), de René Magritte. Os
elementos da tensividade e extensividade das obras literárias e pictóricas fazem parte
dos recursos usados pelos artistas. O caráter de circularidade dos acontecimentos
estabelece os sentidos de pluralidade das tensões em cada arte. Os traços estilísticos
da escritora e do pintor apontam para o êxtase com pontos variantes de intensidade
e extensividade. Os sentimentos dos personagens revelam a ânsia de viver em função
do Outro, que sofre uma metamorfose do ser em busca de sua felicidade. O objetivo
geral consiste em analisar o encontro que as personagens têm com elas mesmas,
descobrindo-se para viverem intensamente a sua felicidade. Os objetivos específicos
correlacionam as linguagens plurais das artes literária e pictórica. Os teóricos que dão
suportes ao estudo são Julio Cortázar (1974); Mikhail Bakhtin (2011); Roland Barthes

The thesis examines the specificities of the different concepts of "Assembly principle" (principle of "Montage") in expert literary studies. Making use of this theoretical base, it dares to classify phenomenon. They are also analysed selected prose literary works of twenties and thirties of 20th century, in which the Montage apply. The thesis points to some of the world's pioneering novels, in which their authors discover the possibilities of the method (Joyce, Dos Passos, Döblin). Special attention is paid to the presence of "Montage" in the Czech utopian fiction novels. The Montage is used in a specific way to enlarge the effect of the (utopian) content - see: War with the Newts by Karel Čapek, "Dům o tisíci patrech" (House of Thousand Floors) by Jan Weiss or Jiří Haussmann's "Velkovýroba cnosti" (Mass production of Virtue). In addition to the Utopia appearance the Montage is used as a tool of author's game with readers - e.g. in the book "Robinsonáda" by Karel Konrád, representative of the Czech Poetism (literary movement).

Previous issue date: 2015-07-22 / CAPES / This paper presents a proposal of educational intervention for the study and use of the strategies of indefinite subject in elementary school, applied in classes of the eighth year of a municipal school in Rio de Janeiro, in order to make the student know and use the forms of indeterminacy in the written form of Brazilian Portuguese, depending on the level of the text monitoring. The learning activities are based on a diagnostic survey of three segments involved in the teaching-learning process: teacher, student and textbook. Regarding teachers, we applied a questionnaire in which we aimed at identifying their beliefs and attitudes in relation to the phenomenon under analysis. Regarding the students, we analyzed their answers to the exercises proposed by the textbook adopted by that school. The theoretical-methodological basis underlying the formulation of these exercises also served as the object of analysis to establish the diagnosis. The intervention proposal was based on the Continuum Model, designed by Bortoni-Ricardo (2004, 2005), specifically in continuous stylistic monitoring. As a teaching methodology, we took the collaborative learning approach (Behrens, 2013) as support. / Este trabalho apresenta uma proposta de interven??o pedag?gica para o estudo e uso das estrat?gias do sujeito indeterminado no ensino fundamental, aplicada em turmas do oitavo ano de uma escola municipal do Rio de Janeiro, com o objetivo de levar o aluno a conhecer e usar as formas de indetermina??o na modalidade escrita do Portugu?s Brasileiro, a depender do grau de monitora??o do texto. As atividades did?ticas partem de uma pesquisa diagn?stica com tr?s segmentos envolvidos no processo ensino-aprendizagem: professor, aluno e livro did?tico. Em rela??o aos docentes, foi aplicado um question?rio em que buscamos identificar as cren?as e atitudes deles quanto ao fen?meno sob estudo. No tocante aos alunos, analisaram-se as respostas dadas por eles aos exerc?cios propostos pelo livro did?tico adotado pela referida escola. A fundamenta??o te?rico-metodol?gica subjacente ? formula??o desses exerc?cios tamb?m serviu de objeto de an?lise para constitui??o do diagn?stico. This essay focuses on style-related challenges that translators may face when translating from German to Swedish. The translated source text stems from the biography Kafka: The Years of Insight. Its literary style and its use of less frequent words make it particularly suitable for a study of the translation of stylistic traits. The essay raises the question whether the style of the source text can be reproduced or not. The analysis is limited to the stylistic aspects of words and includes the area of metaphors and word choice, in particular the translation of foreign words and elevated or archaic style. The study is qualitative and based on Koller's (2011) theory of connotative equivalence and the theories of linguistic and cognitive aspects of metaphors as defined by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and Schäffner (2004). The analysis reveals that style-related translation challenges are caused by the limitations of the target language, yet, the translator is expected to reproduce the style of the source text. Thus, this essay argues that translation has more to do with recreating the style of the source text. This goes against the general view that the style of the target text is merely a reproduction of the source text.

The aim of this work is to find out how slanguage is translated from English into Lithuanian, identify its effect on the language and compare its frequency in the ST vs the TT. Slanguage items are used all over the world and it is not always possible to translate them directly into the TL or find the exact equivalent for certain slang words because of the differences between languages and cultures. Hence, the translation methods of softening, direct transfers, stylistic compensation are suggested by linguists to solve problems of slang and taboo words translation and to achieve the translation which is linguistically correct and acceptable by the reading audience of the target culture.
The present thesis is divided into six main sections and has fourteen appendices.
Chapter 1 introduces the aim and goals of the research as well as discusses the material and methods that are used in the thesis. In Chapter 2 the term slanguage is defined, its classification is described and the usage of slanguage in the Lithuanian and English cultures is compared paying specific attention towards the use of slang and taboo words in the language. Chapters 3 and Chapter 4 deal with the definitions of terms slang and taboo words, identification of their role and functions in the language as well as presentation of their types in more detail. The main translation problems of slang and taboo words with respect to the cultural and linguistic differences are identified in Section 5.1 of Chapter 5... [to full text] / Šio darbo tikslas – sužinoti kaip slengo kalba yra verčiama iš anglų kalbos į lietuvių kalbą, nustatyti jo įtaką kalbai bei palyginti slengo kalbos vartojimo dažnį originaliame ir išverstame tekste. Slengo kalba yra naudojama įvairiose pasaulio šalyse, kurių kalbos ir kultūros skiriasi, todėl surasti tinkamos reikšmės žodį verčiant tekstą yra sudėtinga. Lingvistai siūlo naudotis vertimo metodais, kurie padėtų išspręsti vertimo problemas bei padarytų tekstą lingvistiškai teisingą ir priimtiną skaitytojams: sušvelninimas, tiesioginis vertimas, stilistinė kompensacija.
Šis darbas yra sudarytas iš šešių pagrindinių skyrių ir keturiolikos priedų.
Tikslas, uždaviniai, tyrimo medžiaga ir metodai yra aptariami pirmame skyriuje. Antrame skyriuje yra supažindinama su terminu slengo kalba, šios kalbos klasifikacija bei slengo ir taboo žodžių vartojimu lietuvių ir anglų kalbose. Slengas bei taboo žodžiai yra apibrėžiami, jų vartojimas ir funkcijos kalboje yra aptariamos trečiame ir ketvirtame skyriuose. Pirmame penkto skyriaus poskyryje apibūdinama slengo ir taboo žodžių vertimo problemos, atsiradusios dėl kultūrinių ir lingvistinių skirtumų, o antrame poskyryje yra aprašomi vertimo metodai: sušvelninimas, tiesioginis vertimas, stilistinė kompensacija. Šeštame skyriuje yra atliekama slengo kalbos analizė lyginant originalų ir išverstą tekstus.

The paper focuses on the analyses of stylistic peculiarities in newspaper headlines. It provides an overview of stylistics, functional styles (newspaper style in more detail), and features of headlines. Also stylistic devices are reviewed and classified. In the empirical part 150 headlines are analyzed while 56 of them are provided as illustrative examples and analyzed in greater detail. Stylistic devices found in the newspaper headlines are allocated to the group they belong to and where it is possible classification of a stylistic devices is provided. / Darbo paskirtis - stilistinių ypatybių analizė laikrščių antraštėse. Yra pateikiama teorinė medžiaga apie stilistiką, funkcinius stilius (laikraštinis stilius aptariamas smulkiau) ir antraščių savybės. Taip pat apžvelgtos stilistinės priemonės ir pateikta jų klasifikacija. Empirinėje dalyje yra išanalizuota 150 antraščių ir 56 pateiktos kaip pavyzdžiai ir išanalizuoti detaliau. Stilistinės priemonės rastos laikraščių antraštėse priskirtos grupei kuriai jos priklauso ir kur yra įmanoma, pateikiama stilistinės priemonės klasifikacija.
