Purchasing for a Cause : Millennials' Perceptions of the Cause-Related Marketing Campaigns of Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Phillips, Alicia Elizabeth January 2011 (has links)
Millennials make up the largest generation to date and are highly involved in the support of social causes. Due to their philanthropic interests, Millennials have recently become the target of cause-marketing campaigns. Two studies utilizing focus groups were conducted with 70 college students in order to study the Millennial generation's perception of cause-related marketing campaigns. Study 1 focused on Millennials' general perceptions of cause-related marketing. Study 2 examined the Symbiotic Sustainability Model by focusing on Millennials' perceptions of partner number and relationships of a specific NGO (non-governmental organization), Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Focus group data from both studies indicated that Millennials were very familiar with cause-related marketing campaigns and see the marketing on a daily basis. Participants noted that donation amounts, donation methods, partner congruency, and transparency were all important factors in evaluating cause-related marketing campaigns. The participants were optimistic about cause-related marketing in theory. but were resentful of corporations and sympathetic of NGOs in the examples that they gave. Susan G. Komen for the Cure was seen negatively because they were perceived as monopolizing and dominating the cause market. Participants also believed that pink ribbon breast cancer marketing was too common and had negative effects on pink cause-related marketing campaigns.

Forslund, Lisa January 2023 (has links)
This Essay is about showing yourself and your pain in a private and personal state as an artist and by doing so, affecting the person closest to you. The Essay uses Susan Sontag's book "Regarding the pain of others"(2004), Kristian Vistrup Madsen's book "Doing time (2021) and Maggie Nelsons book "Bluets" as references to explore the deep meaning of art and personal tragedy and using people to make artistic conclusions.

Projected Surfaces

Flynn, Jason 01 January 2014 (has links)
In this paper I will address the philosophies of Susan Sontag, Roland Barthes and Thomas Ruff by considering the object, materials and processes of photography as my primary motivator to create art. I will examine the contrast between photographic imagery, as an illusion of the past, and sculpture, as a physical manifestation of the present, when creating works that ask, "What else can photography be?"

ADQUISICIÓN Y PROCESAMIENTO DIGITAL DE IMÁTENES PARA LA OBTENCIÓN DE LA TRAYECTORIA DE LOS VECTORES DE POSICIÓN DEL CAMARÓN Y LA JAIBA

Luján Ramírez, Carlos Alberto 18 October 2012 (has links)
(2012). Illness, Media, and Culture

Schöndube, Andrea 25 May 2011 (has links)
Only a few print media focus on allergies as a matter of public interest. For this reason the dissertation analyzes the presentation of allergies in English and American lifestyle magazines. This thesis examines the propagation of medical knowledge via the media. It shows if and how the media contribute to health education and information about illness, its relevance, diagnostic investigation as well as therapy. The main focus is on those words which are used as metaphors. They represent an important subject of Susan Sontag''s essay „Illness as Metaphor“ which demonstrates the presentation of illness, the use of stereotypes and thus raises issues about illness being a social and cultural matter of interest. To understand the popular scientific discourse of this dissertation Jürgen Links'' discourse analysis is being used which follows closely Foucault''s theory. The semiotic interpretation is supported by the theories developped by Roland Barthes. This dissertation aims to show how the different discourses intertwine, to bring to fore the underlying mechanisms as well as an appropiate journalistic approach. The benefit of using metaphors when describing illness is that the collective state of mind is addressed and thus the range of thinking will be broadened. This aspect is especially important because the word allergy became a convenient and popular metaphor for a number of personal, professional or political aversions. Although allergies are dramatically on the raise in the modern world, their significance is not recognized yet by the media in their complexity as it should be the case, especially against the backdrop of the economic relevance of that illness

[en] MILK OF THE DOG: NOVEL EXPERIENCES FROM SIMILARS AND DISSIMILARS / [pt] LEITE DE CADELA: EXERCÍCIOS DE ROMANCE A PARTIR DE SEMELHANTES E CONTRÁRIOS

MARIA SILVIA DE SOUZA CAMARGO 12 June 2018 (has links)
[en] The novel Milk of the Dog deals with key-moments in the life of a family, narrated from the point-of-view of its four members. The plot begins with an accident, suffered by the father, and the resulting struggles of the mother and her two children. The story explores the reality of theory vs. experience in issues like health, illness, education, childhood, medicine and therapy. To support the dissertation, the chapters are interrupted and commented on, in nineteen brief essays. They mirror the fiction by reflecting affinities and contrasts, similarities and differences with the unfolding plot. The essays illuminate mostly secondary aspects, but urgent contemporary questions. In the dialogue between fiction and essay, the author s experiences as a journalist and critic are examined, as well as observations about movies, plays, literature and scientific information. We seek to bring fiction, centered on homeopathic therapy, into juxtaposition with currentday tensions and obstacles.

Transmuting the mundane into transcendence : migrations of myth and its connection to contemporary comic books

Opperman, Susan 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the human capacity of modifying established myth in the light of new circumstances. It focuses on the changing status of myth and mythical cosmologies in Western culture as advances in telematics and techno-culture has led to the abundant proliferation of mythic content in modern society. The rise of scientific, secular and rational tendencies in the Occident has resulted in the demystification and negation of some myths and the cultural realities they once supported. Mythical symbols, however, do exhibit a certain degree of independence from their original set ontologies, growing and transforming continuously within contemporary culture as they are communicated to all social spheres. A particular focus is placed on the demystification of myth and its ability to be appropriated within other discourses, most notably fiction. As such, myth tends to exhibit certain migratory and conservational qualities that this study investigates. This serves as background for this thesis that is primarily located within the broader theoretical argument of myth as a system of world-representation in society, the main point of discussion is the re-appropriation of myth within the narrower field of visual signification, specifically the comics medium, as exemplified in the works of Neil Gaiman and Conrad Botes, as well as in my own work.

Play [bi-directional arrows] learn: Susan B. Anthony Middle School site as a neighborhood park design / Play and learn

Hao, Shuang January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Mary Catherine (Katie) Kingery-Page / Neighborhood parks can provide a place for children and teens to satisfy their curiosity and learn about nature. Without an open-space policy or regulation from the city, no park was proposed during the development of the neighborhood adjacent to Susan B. Anthony Middle School in Manhattan, Kansas. People have to cross Highway 113 (Sethchild Road) or Kimball Avenue to the closest parks: Marlatt and Cico. However, neither of them is within walking distance for children and teens in this neighborhood. As a result, families have to build private playgrounds in their own backyards. In addition, technological development makes children and teens prefer staying inside playing video games. Neither private playgrounds nor video games provide interaction with nature or social interaction around nature. This project considers how the middle school site, which sits on approximately 40 acres, can be designed as a neighborhood park to allow children and teens to have close nature access and experiential learning opportunities. To better understand what users really need, interviews with teachers and questionnaires for students determined their current and preferred future use of the school site. In addition, neighborhood children, who are not in the middle school, were interviewed about their play preferences. Observations of the school site usage during school time and after were recorded for design purposes. Six precedents were examined to compare and understand what works to connect children and young teens to nature. After analyzing user needs and physical conditions of the site, a neighborhood park design for the site of Susan B. Anthony Middle School was proposed. The proposed design meets both students’ experiential learning needs and the need of neighborhood children and young teens to connect to nature. Because the 40-acre schoolyard is a nationally recommended size for middle schools, this joint-use schoolyard and park concept can be applied cross the country where needed.
