Negotiations of legitimacy : the value of recognition for Glasgow UNESCO City of Music

Tuohy, Honor January 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines the emergence of the organization, the Glasgow UNESCO City of Music, following the award of the title UNESCO City of music to Glasgow in 2008 from a Bourdieusian perspective. Bourdieu's concepts of field, habitus, and particularly capital are used to interrogate the negotiation of symbolic capital (Bourdieu, 1986) in the field of music in Glasgow. The thesis examines how the members of the organization–viewed their organization's position in the field of music in Glasgow and their attempts to secure its legitimacy in a field with established players. It shows how agents ‘work' to negotiate for the positions they want, or need, in order to establish the legitimacy, and thus the position, of an organization through the acquisition and use of capital. Although cultural capital is a core constituent of an organization's original position in the field of music the dominant and influential position of economic capital means that it is the symbolic capital associated with being granted funding rather than cultural capital, which influences and thus legitimate organizations in the cultural field. In its discussion of capital the thesis contributes to the literature on institutional work and organizational legitimacy.

Acne Jeans and Brand Associations : -A Study of the Coherency Between the Brand Identity and the Brand Image

Andersson, Henrik, Robertson, Frida January 2008 (has links)
In recent years, the successful expansions of Swedish fashion companies have mainly relied on their ability to turn fashion into brands. However, when companies grow it seems to be difficult to maintain the original brand identity as well as to establish a unique brand image in the minds of the consumers. With regard to this matter the purpose of our thesis was to investigate the brand image of Acne Jeans. Our ambition was to examine to what extent the brand image coincided with the brand identity and if brand associations differed between different consumer segments. In order to fulfil our purpose, we have conducted a questionnaire study of a sample of 130 students at Stockholm University. The findings of our study show that the brand image of Acne Jeans did not coincide with the brand identity regarding the aspects of individuality and innovativeness. We further concluded that there were several differences between the associations of those in possession of Acne apparel and those who did not own any Acne items. Finally, the associations of early adopters were investigated. The result indicated that the brand associations in this group did not deviate from the general opinion of the total sample.

Forss, Linnéa January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is to investigate and analyze how three different actors linked to the urban transformation in the city of Kiruna, in this case LKAB, the Municipality of Kiruna and the County Administrative Board of Norrbotten, believe that the identity of a historical monument that is marked cultural heritage is affected by future relocation. The second part of the study is to investigate the impact the building might have on the city in the future. This study is based on the relocation of Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården. The study is based on a qualitative approach in which five informants from the three actors were interviewed. The interviews have been analyzed through thematic analysis, where a combination of theoretical thematic analysis and empirical thematic analysis was used. The result shows that the new location of Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården is preferred to be in a suitable context close to other cultural buildings. All informants agree that accessibility is a fundamental element in, which a synergistic effect is an increase in visitor numbers. Since the greatest value around Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården is Hjalmar Lundbohm and his deeds, the identity can still be passed on even though the place is not the same. The informants agree that it is important with cultural references in a city so people have something to relate to.

Westerberg, Jonathan January 2019 (has links)
This essay examines the impact of estimation for the training’s added value in life on level of physical training. Through a multiple-regression analysis of primary data, the study presents what impact a particular background has on the physical exercise’s position in a life puzzle of a Swedish young adult. The theoretical framework is based on the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of habitus, symbolic capital, symbolic value and symbolic violence. According to these concepts, all individuals operate within specific fields, within which they also hold a position. Practices and social agents in the various fields shape what Bourdieu calls habitus, an individual set of schemes that shape tastes a values. These theories help us understand why people perform different targeted actions in life based on their gender, class and grew up place. Data have been collected through a quantitative survey. The material consists of questionnaires from 179 young adults from Sweden between the ages of 19-29. The bivariate regression analysis could not prove a significant correlation between estimation of the training’s added value in life and level of physical training. When a multivariate regression design included control variables a positive correlation between the training’s added value in life and level of physical training emerged. Gender, class and age also proved important for the level of training where being a female and coming from an entrepreneurial home increased the level of training. /
Tillgänglig på messenger (Jonathan Westerberg), alternativt sms (0700912052).

La vivienda porteña en el período virreinal

Otero, Osvaldo 22 March 2005 (has links) (PDF)

Bergsten, Erik January 2014 (has links)
The focus of this two year master’s thesis in Library- and Information science is the study of two Swedish Public Library buildings with the examples Lomma and Halmstad. The main goal and purpose of the thesis is to try to uncover which views and values of the public library are expressed in the examined libraries; and to what extent these views manifests are shown in its architecture. The theoretical framework is based on Raymond Williams’s cultural concepts of effective, dominant culture and the two extremities of this culture, called residual and emergent cultures. A second aspect is Yi-Fu Tuans concepts of Space and Place. The study also uses a historical background of Swedish Public Library Buildings. By close reading and textual analyses, the empirical study focuses on the municipalities’ documents surrounding the building of the library buildings in Lomma and Halmstad. The architectural perspective is studied through the architects own documents and architectural journals discussing the built Library Buildings. Results show that the technological advances of the time these libraries were built has put them in a position of change, which also is visible in the architecture. The libraries in Lomma and Halmstad function as civic icons of the community and the architecture is very dependent of the places where they are situated. The expressions of the two libraries differ in details but the overall result show that the values exhibited behind the building of the examined libraries is a part of a historical residual culture, functioning as effective and dominant. The conclusion of the thesis is that the expression of the architecture is however a part of an emergent culture. The buildings aim to comprise the values and display the diverse causes in its architecture. The buildings seek to manifest the ideal activity and working of the modern Public Library.

ABSTRACT In this research, I discuss the symbolic value of a superior-level diploma for female teachers who worked in Childhood Programs and Elementary classes in public educational systems. Specifically, the focus was on the first cohort who participated in the pedagogy program at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) during the implementation of the National Plan for the Training of Teachers in Elementary Education—PARFOR, between 2010 and 2013. A key objective of the research was to evaluate what the diploma meant to Elementary Education teachers, based on the life stories of teachers - students. The research sought a) to learn the motives that led the teacher - students to seek a superior-level diploma; b) to evaluate the impact of enrolling, remaining in the course, and completing the pedagogical program on the trajectory of these teachers; c) to analyze expectations with respect to the possible benefits to be gained upon conclusion of the course of study; and d) investigate the symbolic value of a superior-level degree from UFBA. The research is of a qualitative nature. I used diverse research strategies, including ethnographic approaches to the study of education along with Oral Histories, to understand the personal background of the teacher-students, their day-today lives during the enrollment period, the course of study, and graduation from the university. Major works informing the study included those by Pierre Bourdieu and Norbert Elias. The findings demonstrate that the teacher-students and their families seek access to higher levels of education, in particular the right to a superior-level diploma in the case of the teachers. They also demonstrate a perceived need to attain a superior-level diploma in Education in order to overcome stigmas associated with the LDB (Law 9394/96) and biases exhibited inside the schools and school systems towards individuals without superior-level diplomas. The research demonstrates as well a sense of fulfillment and affirmation among those individuals who completed the course of study at UFBA. It is important to evaluate access to superior-level training and degree programs for teachers at elementary, middle and upper level schools. It is equally important to reflect on the personal experiences of individuals who pursue these advanced degrees.

Learning How to Learn : Challenges and Learning Experiences in a Network of Southern African - North European Municipal Partnerships / Learning How to Learn : Challenges and Learning Experiences in a Network of Southern African - North European Municipal Partnerships

Nilsson, Ulrika, Rothoff, Julia January 2023 (has links)
In the light of the urgence of cooperation in the world, for handling global issues, this study offers a discussion on bilateral cooperation, more specifically on municipal partnerships. While previous research has examined some specific cases on possibilities and challengeswith this kind of cooperation, the view of proven efficiency in relation to the symbolic value has fallen short. The organization Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy offers a Network for Human Rights and aims to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences between local authorities. This study, which is based on ten in-depth qualitative interviews, ought to explore what challenges and learnings can be found in ongoing municipal partnerships, in this Network. The study further aims to explore how those findings relate to a North and South perspective and the municipalities’ values and goals, by collecting experiences from South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Sweden. Through a thematic analysis process of the empirical data and the use of a theoretical framework in the field of organizational learning, developed by Chris Argyris and Donald A. Schön, this study has been able to identify several findings. Challenges involve implementation, cultural obstacles and lack of resources, which prove to be divergent between North and South. Values and goals of the partnerships are hence hard to perform in practice. The outcomes circle practical activities, however, the most evident outcome is to learn from one another, which puts the learning experiences in focus of the study.
