Challenges in the Eco-tourism Industry in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Bengtsson, Hanna, Folkeryd, Felicia January 2017 (has links)
A certain responsibility is accompanying the substantial impact which the tourism industry is generating. The impacts are constantly expanding due to the growing population, globalization, and economic welfare. An emerging discussion about the challenges to develop sustainable tourism is not only important but also imperative, especially in countries which are dependent on tourism as their main source of income. This field study is founded on the theoretical framework of eco-tourism which is built on the debate regarding if the eco-tourism industry can be sustainable. The data collected is based on qualitative methods, using mainly semi-structured and informative interviews along with observations in Costa Rica in the village of Santa Teresa. The purpose of the field study was to investigate eco-tourism and the tourists’ opportunities to travel sustainable in Santa Teresa. Specifically, the study strived toidentify attributes that are hindering the eco-tourists from traveling sustainably. The main study object were, according to the Costa Rican Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST), the industry's main factors, the sustainable behaviour of the tourist and the strong infrastructure of the host country. The findings of the field study aim to contribute with relevant information on how to locally improve practices to reach a sustainable development of eco-tourism in Santa Teresa. The result revealed a shortage in adequate opportunities for the tourist to travel sustainable according The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) criteria for being an eco-tourist. Factors were identified to be insufficient infrastructure, due to thesuddenly emerging influx of tourists as well as the Costa Rican governments stagnation and inability to approach the subsequent consequences. Even though, indications also showed a willingness to improve the industry. In order to assure a sustainable development in Santa Teresa, and further Costa Rica, such negative attributes need to be addressed in order to handle the intangible and tangible tourism in this ongoing growing context.

The journey to God through the spirituality of Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582)

Vietri, Christopher Daniel 30 November 2007 (has links)
This study sets out to determine whether Teresa of Ávila's spirituality, especially her treatise, The Interior Castle, can still provide an appropriate guide for the journey to God in the world of the 21st century. This remarkable book offers a particularly unique contribution to Christian literature. To accomplish this goal, a study of the nature of Christian Spirituality is undertaken, followed by a brief history of Christian spirituality. This provides a backdrop for an examination of the historical setting against which the Interior Castle was written. The study then explores the seven mansions of the Interior Castle to gain an understanding of the journey to God and examines some of the most important and recurring themes in the book. The stages and forms of prayer which are central to the Interior Castle are discussed and the mystical experiences of the 'dark night of the spirit' and union with God are analysed. Lastly, the findings are evaluated to ascertain whether Teresa's writings are still relevant in this contemporary era for those embarking upon the journey towards God. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Such transgressive and performatic works are from Maria Teresa Horta (1937-), Portuguese writer, who proposes a new education by a renewed language: a sentimental education spawned from the erotic element. Starting from the deconstruction of the view over the spoiled body and exposed in Novas cartas portuguesas, from the poetic texts in Educa??o sentimental, as well as in remaining ones in Poesia completa II, Horta disassembles and reassembles the body, giving a new meaning to the symbols that surround us and our experiences. Other than proposing to all, men and women, such new meaning of the behavior and current practices models, Horta s education allows, through a performance action, the construction of a stage for female identity, free from the phallic influence. A new identity, able to handle all holy and profane characteristics of women, discarding the chromatic lens of sin. / Abstract: This thesis has as its aim of analysis the pedagogical practices and the scholar culture in the Colégio Salesiano Santa Teresa sited in Corumbá-MS. A religious catholic institution in educative activities since 1899. For this research, we elected the years of 1972 to 1987. The proposal of understanding the pedagogical practices and the scholar culture by the school parties (festivities), scholar celebrations and the civic culture in the Colégio Salesiano Santa Teresa in Corumbá-MS, are related with the interest in knowing correctly the relation of the school with de city and the imaginary that is built from it, in relation to the local inhabitants. Our goal was to comprehend what values and feelings were created or spread by the school parties (festivities) and scholar celebrations and the purposes or intentions that the school party (festivity) carried. In this research, we are working with the information about the festivities that happened in the Colégio Santa Teresa, between 1972 and 1987, considering the organization present in the school calendar in that period, the notes from the book where the activities were registered, the official letters (dispatched, received, circulars) and the testimonies of ex-students, ex-teachers and ex-employees, diaries and official programs. We used as well as sources iconographic registers, newspapers and bibliographic references, once the salesianos were already studied by other authors. This research allowed us to elucidate the complexity of the reality and dynamic of the school showing the parties (festivities) and celebrations that are present in the scholar calendar as elements of the scholar culture that suffer modifications during the seasons and the purposes that produce them, not depending if they are political, social, economic, religious or of socialization. And the subjects that elaborate it or that are part of it as actors or spectators, as well transformed them and are transformed by it. In this way, the historic look of festivities and celebrations in the scholar universe gave the possibility to revisit the past, build interpretations, explanations and to understand the school by its inside. / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação

[en] THE WOMAN IN TERESA DE JESUS: EXPERIENCE OF FREEDOM AND LOVE IN THE SERVICE OF A NEW FEMININE CONSCIOUSNESS / [pt] A MULHER EM TERESA DE JESUS: EXPERIÊNCIA DE LIBERDADE E AMOR A SERVIÇO DE UMA NOVA CONSCIÊNCIA FEMININA

REGINA COELI ESTRADA DA PAIXAO DUARTE 18 August 2017 (has links)
[en] This work is to show the woman Teresa de Jesus (1515-1582) - writer, mystic, prophetess, founder, reformer, pedagogue, theologian and doctor of the Church - has much to say to the woman of the 21st century. Teresa s mystical experience is essentially evangelical, feminine and hardworking. It offers the Church a creative doctrine about prayer, this relationship of love and friendship. Teresa was the one who changed the way of feminine thinking by overturning the cultural conventions of the time imposed on women. She was a feminist woman who shifts the power relations between men and women to better live the authentic concrete love. For her, grace and freedom form the foundation that the human being finds to live the true love in the surrender of self and in the experience with the other. She shows that prayer, this deal of friendship, produces this awakening, this self-awareness of oneself. Teresa, as a mystagogue, leads the reader to experience an itinerary of love and freedom tried by her own self.

Misery and Its Escape: Thomas Aquinas and Teresa of Ávila on the Bad Life

Marsh, Anthony Joseph January 2023 (has links)
My dissertation gives the first analysis of misery in the thought of Aquinas and Teresa of Ávila, providing new insight into their ideas of happiness through means of contrast. I use the terms “misery” and “happiness” in a traditional sense to indicate life lived poorly or well, respectively, and I investigate these notions in Aquinas’ and Teresa’s principal texts, especially the Summa Theologiae and The Interior Castle. Both thinkers identify misery as a privation of God: a lack of the share in God’s goodness that one ought to have. Both see the escape from misery as a process of perfecting the soul’s faculties of intellect and will to unite one to God. For Aquinas, happiness is essentially an intellectual perfection: knowledge of God. Conversely, misery is an intellectual defect: lack of the knowledge of God that one ought to have. Moreover, Aquinas so analyzes “ought” that misery is a lack of what is naturally desired. Perfect happiness comes with the full understanding of God that one can only attain in heaven, but a middle ground exists between perfect happiness and misery. Even in this life, one can attain “imperfect happiness,” and the analysis of misery helps to clarify this obscure notion. The imperfectly happy have not acquired their consummate perfection, but understand as much about God as nature presently compels them to desire to know. A right will is both necessary and sufficient for escaping misery and obtaining happiness. The will depends on the intellect in such a way that it cannot desire correctly unless the intellect understands correctly. Moreover, sin colors one’s perception of reality, so that evil desire in the will causes error and ignorance in the intellect. Thus, one escapes misery if and only if one chooses to love God as one’s ultimate end. For Teresa, happiness is the union with God through knowledge and love for which the soul was made, and misery is the lack of this union. The soul escapes misery by developing a relationship with God in contemplative prayer, and Teresa illustrates happiness and misery through the titular metaphor of The Interior Castle. Notably, happiness requires that one’s union with God become perfectly secure, and I identify an intellectualist strain in Teresa that implies that the will cannot become perfectly committed to God unless the intellect can become perfectly firm in its certainty that God is the sole good. The quest for certainty is difficult, since like Descartes who will follow her, Teresa posits the existence of a deceiving demon with considerable influence over all the soul’s powers. Against that threat, Teresa claims to find certainty through mystical experience. God is Truth, containing and grounding all other truths. In the “spiritual marriage,” the soul sees God’s Triune nature as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, really three distinct persons yet one substance. The directness of this vision provides a certainty which no deception can overcome.

[pt] A HERANÇA ESPIRITUAL-CARISMÁTICA DE SANTO ANÍBAL MARIA À LUZ DA ESPIRITUALIDADE DE SANTA TERESA DE JESUS / [en] THE SPIRITUAL-CHARISMATIC HERITAGE OF SAINT HANNIBAL MARY DI FRANCIA IN THE LIGHT OF THE SPIRITUALITY OF SAINT TERESA OF JESUS

GISLENE DANIELSKI 30 June 2020 (has links)
[en] The study we carry out is based on the spiritual-charismatic heritage of Saint Hannibal Mary Di Francia and on the spiritual doctrine of Saint Teresa of Jesus. Hannibal, through the charism of Rogate, consecrated his life to God through an intense life of prayer and union with Christ expressed in charity for the most needy. He founded the Institute of the Daughters of Divine Zeal and offered the Rogate as a way of salvation to his sisters and to the duty that is entrusted to them. The founder sought enlightenment for his life and for the life of his Institute in Carmelite spirituality. In many of his writings, he demonstrates the Carmelite saints as a model of spiritual and apostolic life. Among these, we highlight the proximity to St. Teresa of Jesus, Doctor of the Church. In the writings of the Saint of Avila, Hannibal finds aspects that boost Rogate s spirituality and mission. In the course of this study, we highlight some of these aspects that influenced the life of the founder and which today directly affect the spiritual-charismatic life of the Daughter of Divine Zeal, redefining and illuminating the process of conformation to Christ of these nuns. We highlight: prayer aspects in Saint Teresa, her profound contemplation of the Sacred Humanity of Christ, the Spiritual Marriage, charity as a reflection of the profound treatment of Friendship with the Divine Spouse, the love for the Eucharist and Mary. All these listed elements have collaborated so that the Daughter of the Divine Zeal is always more united to the Divine Spouse and with Him can surrender his own life for the salvation of souls in order to allow potential friends to seek God.
