All makt åt Estrid, vår befriare : En kvalitativ textanalys av Estrids varumärkesidentitet / All power to Estrid, our liberator : A qualitative text analysis of Estrid's brand identity

Haglund Wigh, Isabelle, Opara Granlund, Hanna January 2021 (has links)
Uppsatsen All makt åt Estrid, vår befriare - En kvalitativ textanalys av Estrids varumärkesidentitet undersöker företaget Estrids marknadsföring. (Facebook, 2020). / The essay All power to Estrid, our liberator - A qualitative text analysis of Estrid´s brand identity examines Estrids marketing. The analysis has been carried out by a qualitative text analysis where we focus on semiotics and rhetoric. The marketing channels that we have chosen to take a closer look at are Estrid´s official website and Instagram account. The study intends to examine the company's brand identity, based on Estrid´s marketing of their main product and observe how this portrays the company's vision and values as well as feminine norms. The empirical material consists of two texts from Estrid´s About us page and six posts from their Instagram account. To analyze the material we have, among other things, used semiotic tools as well as rhetoric and argumentation analysis. In order to fulfill the essay's purpose it is based on the following question; What is Estrid brand identity and in what way is it presented in the company's marketing? Our theoretical framework includes brand theory, the consumers use of brands to express their identity as well as gender theory and stereotypes. We can see how a number of companies use politically emphasized issues in their marketing. Estrid for an example talks about women and their right to their own body. But how does it work when the problem you want to solve is the reason why the company can exist as well as make a profit out of it. We can see how Estrid talks against itself in one and the same text as well as how easy it is for companies to use pretty words without going deeper into what it means in practice. The company has a chance to raise awareness and discuss a certain issue, but instead they mean that there is no longer a problem thanks to the company's existence. What will this result in? What we have come to in our essay is summarized relatively well by a comment on Estrid’s Facebook page; “[...] Only if we agree that if everyone was happy with their great pair of hairy legs, bushy toes or fluffy armpits, you would have gone bankrupt. So best for you that some continue to feel the pressure[...]” (Facebook, 2020). The quote is translated from Swedish to English.

WEAKLY SUPERVISED CHARACTERIZATION OF DISCOURSES ON SOCIAL AND POLITICAL MOVEMENTS ON ONLINE MEDIA

Shamik Roy (16317636) 14 June 2023 (has links)

Nowadays an increasing number of people consume, share, and interact with information online. This results in posting and counter-posting on online media by different ideological groups on various polarized topics. Consequently, online media has become the primary platform for political and social influencers to directly interact with the citizens and share their perspectives, views, and stances with the goal of gaining support for their actions, bills, and legislation. Hence, understanding the perspectives and the influencing strategies in online media texts is important for an individual to avoid misinformation and improve trust between the general people and the influencers and the authoritative figures such as the government.

Automatically understanding the perspectives in online media is difficult because of two major challenges. Firstly, the proper grammar or mechanism to characterize the perspectives is not available. Recent studies in Natural Language Processing (NLP) have leveraged resources from social science to explain perspectives. For example, Policy Framing and Moral Foundation Theory are used for understanding how issues are framed and the moral appeal expressed in texts to gain support. However, these theories often fail to capture the nuances in perspectives and cannot generalize over all topics and events. Our research in this dissertation is one of the first studies that adapt social science theories in Natural Language Processing for understanding perspectives to the extent that they can capture differences in ideologies or stances. The second key challenge in understanding perspectives in online media texts is that annotated data is difficult to obtain to build automatic methods to detect the perspectives, that can generalize over the large corpus of online media text on different topics. To tackle this problem, in this dissertation, we used weak sources of supervision such as social network interaction of users who produce and interact with the messages, weak human interaction, or artificial few-shot data using Large Language Models.

Our insight is that various tasks such as perspectives, stances, sentiments toward entities, etc. are interdependent when characterizing online media messages. As a result, we proposed approaches that jointly model various interdependent problems such as perspectives, stances, sentiments toward entities, etc., and perform structured prediction to solve them jointly. Our research findings showed that the messaging choices and perspectives on online media in response to various real-life events and their prominence and contrast in different ideological camps can be efficiently captured using our developed methods.

Ragagnin, Gianna January 2016 (has links)

An analysis of the sports promotion text in Xhosa

Mbena, Siphokazi Grissel 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M.A.)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores how the theoretical framework pertaining to reading as advanced by Davies (1995) can be employed to develop reading skills in Xhosa and to assist learners to see reading as a process. Teaching reading to language learners has many problems. The critical thinking relevant to reading and analysis of the text in teaching reading are examined. The study explores the current genre approach in the analysis of Xhosa Bona Magazine with its articles. The research of certain scholars like Davies, Wallace, Swales, and Cope and Kalantzis will be explored, in particular, the hierarchy of five levels of text, as advanced by Davies. Reading is an integral part of the school curriculum, and to use reading texts depends on the purpose for which the educator wants to use it, i.e. to develop reading comprehension skills, to present new vocabulary and structures, or as a basis for language practice. This study examines reading in Outcomes-base Education (O.B.E.) as a current issue in South African education, to determine how the specified outcomes relate to the framework for the development of reading skills.
