Student Attitudes Towards Extensive Reading: : A mixed methods study about Swedish upper secondary school students' attitudes andperceptions of extensive reading in English

This essay aims to investigate Swedish upper secondary school students' perceptions about their attitudes and motivation towards extensive reading in English. Further, this essay also aims to investigate students' attitudes towards self-selected reading as a potentially more motivational classroom strategy in comparison to teacher-selected reading. The main research questions addressed are 'What are Swedish upper secondary school students' attitudes to extensive reading in English?' and 'Do the students perceive self-selected reading to be more motivational than teacher-selected reading?'. The hypothesis is that students recognize learner autonomy to have a positive effect upon their reading attitudes and therefore prefer self-selected reading materials. Through collecting data using mixed methods consisting of 40 questionnaires and seven interviews, and further analyzing this data using qualitative content analysis and descriptive statistics, this study presents several findings. The results show that students’ attitudes are mixed: students are both more positive and negative towards extensive reading in English than for reading in general. Through further comparing the students' attitudes regarding the two reading selection practices—self-selected or teacher-selected reading—this study shows that 90% of students believe that self-selected reading would positively impact their reading enjoyment. Additionally, the results also imply that it is not necessarily learner autonomy that students perceive as likely to improve their reading attitudes, but that they rather just want their reading materials to align with their personal interests. This degree project essay concludes that many of the students are not feeling intrinsically motivated to read in their English class, and are thus relying on extrinsic factors for motivation instead, such as grades, which leaves them with negative reading experiences and attitudes. Finally, some pedagogical implications in relation to this study's findings are discussed.

Studier visar att människor i dagens samhälle aktiverar sig i allt mindre utsträckning än förr då våra arbeten idag blivit mindre fysiskt krävande och där många idag även väljer ett mer stillasittande fritid. Långvarigt stillasittande dagligen, i brist på övrig fysisk aktivitet och motion, innebär tydligt en ökad risk för flertalet av de stora folksjukdomarna samt förtida död. Idag lever vi i vår vardag på ett sätt som gör av med mindre energi i hushållsarbetet idag då våra hushållsmaskiner gör det mesta av arbetet åt oss. Personlig träning är ett träningsverktyg som börjar bli allt mer förekommande inom träning och hälsa.    Syftet med vår kvalitativa undersökning var att undersöka anledningarna varför en individ väljer att söka sig till en personlig tränare. Samt vilka upplevelser och erfarenheter av personlig träning och vilken påverkan dessa har på individen.    I den här undersökning genomfördes en kvalitativ intervjuundersökning där tio medelålders kvinnor med erfarenhet från personlig träning deltog i studien.    Samtliga deltagare i studien delar med sig av mycket positiva upplevelser av personlig träning. Det upplevde positivitet i interaktionen och träning med PT, där de tillsammans kunde ge upphov till förändringar i livsstil och beteende. Resultaten som framkom var både fysiska och mentala, där båda indirekt varit avlösande i relation till varandra. Välmående, positiv känsla, tillfredsställelse, motivation samt glädje är några av de känslor som respondenterna upplevde i personlig träning. Många ansåg interaktionen med en PT och den sociala närvaron som nödvändig, tillsammans med trygghet och kunskap. Sammantaget uppfattades en personlig tränares uppfattades som bestämd, konstruktiv, kunnig, social, engagerad och kommunikativ. Det som respondenterna värderade mest i sin interaktion med personlig träning och ämnade att tillfredsställa för att kunna bevara och stärka motivationen de hade var känslan av självbestämmande, känslan av autonomi, social meningsfullhet samt kompetens. Den kvalitativa undersökningen uppvisar att personlig träning kan leda till positiva upplevelser. Studien har visat att individer som delar gemenskap, social meningsfullhet, autonomi och självbestämmande tyder på att personlig träning kan vara ett verktyg för att främja den egna träningen och hälsan. Detta kan leda till att individen får mer energi och motivation till att göra förändringar i sin vardag så som träning och som kan tillfredsställa de egna behoven och den personliga kemin mellan tränaren och klienten. Studiens resultat tyder på att personlig träning kan vara en god metod för att träna intensivare, göra livsstilsförändringar samt få fysiska och mentalt resultat utav träning där självkänslan kan stärkas.

Intrinsically motivated or externally regulated?

Unga vuxna är en viktig målgrupp att uppmana till att anta en miljövänlig livsstil, då stadiet mellan tonår och vuxenliv präglas av förändring och utveckling av livsstil och vanor. Denna studie syftar till att undersöka unga vuxnas vanor gällande miljöbeteende och vilken typ av motivation de har för att handla miljövänligt. Genom en enkätundersökning som inkluderar 294 svar har denna studie funnit att unga vuxna är motiverade till att vara miljövänliga. Studien visar att identified regulation är den mest dominanta typen av reglering till miljöbeteende. De huvudsakliga barriärerna mot ökat engagemang kan härledas till de tre grundläggande psykologiska behoven autonomi, kompetens och tillhörighet. Nyckelord: motivation, miljöbeteende, unga vuxna, SDT, miljö / Individuals experience a fundamental change upon becoming adults. They develop lifestyles and habits that they will carry with them throughout the rest of their life. Therefore urging this group to adopt an environmentally friendly lifestyle is vital. The purpose of this study is to identify environmental habits and motivation for pro-environmental behaviour among emerging adults in Sweden. Through a questionnaire survey including 294 responses, the study has found that emerging adults are motivated to engage in environmental activities with identified regulation as the predominant type of regulation. Types of Home Schools and Need-Support for Achievement Motivation

Along many dimensions, homeschooling is increasing, diversifying, and spreading globally. Yet little is known about the motivational climates and teaching strategies parents have adopted to promote academic achievement and motivation within their homes. Working within a self-determination theory (SDT) framework, this study used cluster analysis to examine the naturally-occurring types of learning environments created by 457 homeschool parents. Measures of support for autonomy, mastery goal orientation, and conditional regard were adapted for a homeschool context and used as constituting variables. Follow-up measures of need satisfaction, efficacy, student academic engagement, teaching practices and demographics were used to identify significant differences among groups. A five cluster solution best fit the data: a high need support group, low need support group and three groups of mixed need support. In general, the high need and mixed need support groups were associated with higher student engagement, need satisfaction, efficacy for homeschooling and frequent use of teaching strategies that promote autonomous motivation and support for student competence. The low need support group was significantly associated with lower need satisfaction and teaching strategies associated with control. Higher levels of academic engagement were reported for those students homeschooled longer and at higher grade levels. Male teaching parents (n = 29) reported significantly less need satisfaction and were significantly associated with the low need support group. Taken together, the findings extend self-determination theory to an important, emerging learning context. Results were consistent with findings in SDT research across other domains; thus, lending support to the universality of SDT's main tenets. / Educational Psychology
