Instrumento para mensurar presença social em curso de graduação ofertado na modalidade a distância / Instrument to measure social presence in undergraduate distance education courses

Alessandra Fracaroli Perez 30 January 2014 (has links)
Distance education has increased quite significantly in recent years and this growth has in turn heightened concern about the quality of courses offered in this mode. To guide course managers on what is quality in this type of education, quality guidelines were created by Brazils Ministry of Education in order to guide them in the design and conduction of their courses. One of the factors discussed in this quality referential regards that the student should be the center of the educational process. This means that the courses should provide effective means of communication so that the student does not feel isolated and as a result abandon the course, thereby decreasing students retention rates and increasing dropout rates. Therefore, the theme social presence, which is the way for a student to feel he belongs to his course, contributes to increasing the quality of the course. Therefore, a literature review was conducted on the subject and its benefits to this type of education. Additionally, strategies that can be used to foster social presence were presented both in terms of the virtual learning environment as well as teachers/tutors and students. However, for social presence to be detected it is necessary to have a valid and reliable instrument. Therefore, the existing instruments that could help achieve the goal of this research were investigated and an instrument validated in an educational context was found, which was vital for this research. For this instrument to be validated in the context in which the research was conducted, prior to its application, it was translated and experts were consulted and pre-test were performed. The instrument was then administered to undergraduate students in a private Higher Education Institution as well as to their teachers/tutors. Cronbach\'s alpha was used to verify the construct reliability and the factor analysis was used to verify the construct validity. The data analysis showed that the instrument, the result of this research, is reliable and valid and can effectively contribute to measure social presence in undergraduate distance courses as well as contribute with strategies to improve course activities.

Severo, Carlos Emilio Padilla January 2011 (has links)
This research presents the specification, development and employ of a system to mapping evidences of mediation on Virtual Learning Enviroments – VLE. This system aims to support the mediation process to teachers who develop educational activities related to distance education, aimed at reducing the workload of the teacher during the identification and attendance of the mediations evolution in the environment. For this, we use techniques of text mining with the employ of bayesian inference mechanisms to identify mediations categories from the users interactions in the online course. The system validation and evaluation of results were performed through a case study applied to a discipline of graduate course of the UFRGS about Computers in Education. The data used in this research were achieved from the interactions stored in the Moodle virtual learning environment of the Interdisciplinary Center of New Technologies in the Education. During the investigation were selected students from the discipline to interactions mapping. With the interactions mapping and identification of the mediations categories for each student were created graphics and reports with informations about mediation process. The mediation categories aid to identify levels of mediation. In analyzing the results, the information obtained from such graphs and reports were triangulated with information from an interview with the tutor and the vision of the researcher involved in the case study. The results shown that the use of a system to mapping evidences of mediation in virtual learning environments, with the choice of the text mining technology makes it possible to identify levels of mediation of the participants of a course in the distance modality.

Rodrigues, Alessandra Pereira January 2012 (has links)
Learning Objects are important resources to give opportunity to the learning according to their modular character, this way they may offer conditions to an activity supported by allocated resources by requests to the specific needs of a class or of an individual student. This characteristic is a beneficial and facilitator element, but it adds an aspect which makes its use difficult due to the learning object’s location difficulty appropriated to the specific needs. As a result, there is significant research effort of strategies in order to facilitate the location and the access to the Learning Objects (LO) adequate to the students and teachers’ needs, because the difficulty in order to perform these processes causes a decrease in the frequency of use and reuse from these ones in activities of teaching and learning. The usual place to store these resources is a Learning Objects Repository (LOR). However, the use of learning objects occurs more frequently in the Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs). Due to these findings, this study researched the strategies to integrate a Learning Objects Repository to a Virtual Learning Environment and how this integration may support the teacher and the student at the construction and adaptation of teaching and learning plan. The present thesis shows a theoretical frame about the Learning Objects Repository and Virtual Learning Environments and some solutions taken to integrate these systems. In addition, it proposes a integration model of repositories to VLEs and it describes its implementation as well as the results from the use of the integrating solution built. The systems chosen to validate the deployed model were the repository CESTA2 and the VLE MOODLE. The main hypothesis is that the integration of the systems allows that the Learning Objects may be more easily added by the teacher to the VLE at the learning unit planning to a subject our course and it allows that these resources be advised by the teacher to the student in several learning situations previously outlined in each learning unit or the ones which arises along the course. At this point of view the solution proposed aims to create conditions so that the LOs may be researched and used by the students through available tools at own VLE. In order to validate the integration were done case studies with students and teachers from two classes of Relational Database Project subject from the Instituto Federal Sul-rio-grandense, Pelotas Campus. Differently from other studies done about the topic and described at this thesis, this study focuses on the environment integration with the technological purpose in order to verify the interoperability presented between them and as teaching purpose to verify how this integration may help teachers and students. The assessment and validation performed through case study with teachers and students showed that the proposed and evidenced model meets the expectations and may support teachers and students in their teaching and learning activities, respectively. Furthermore, the study from this thesis brings important contributions to the educational institutions that use the DSpace free software as institutional repository and the MOODLE as Institutional VLE, showing how these two systems may be integrated allowing to their users all the benefits that this integration may offer.

Longaray, Ariane Nichele Cesar January 2014 (has links)
This thesis has had the objective to propose strategies to assist teachers when they face the affective phenomena that students show in the tools of synchronous and asynchronous communication of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The research had the Framework ROODafeto as a base, which presents the mood the student is at writing on one of the functions of the VLE Learning co-op Network (ROODA), the two resources and a search based on constructivism. To collect data we used the mentioned environment and ROODAafeto. The research was conducted from three steps, which were: “Definition and planning”; “Content analysis” and “Collect and discussion of data”. The first step subsidized the construction of the theoretical and presents the characteristics of the subjects analyzed; at the second stage visualizes the definition and steps of content analysis; in the last step, describes a pilot case study whose focus was to visualize the manifestation of affective phenomena in the functions of LVE ROODA and in parallel, the strategies were also built. Lastly, the implementation of the Framework strategies was held and we analyzed how the teacher acted after he visualized the mood and the strategy. The data has shown that the teacher visualized the strategy indicated by ROODAafeto before making his action. The relationship established between visualizing the strategy and his performance was not causal, therefore it is not possible to claim that the action of the teacher happened just because the strategy was implemented, but, from the analyzed data, we can see that there was an influence, that is, the teacher’s performance had the contents of what the strategy suggested as a base.

Letramentos e atividades on-line em Ambiente Virtual de Aprendizagem / Literacies and online activities in Virtual Learning Environment

Samuel de Carvalho Lima 25 November 2009 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze the relations between literacies and online activities present in Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The implementation of this proposal was based on reflections about the literacies submitted by Shetzer and Warschauer (2000), Soares (2002), Xavier (2005), AraÃjo (2007), Fischer (2007) and Ribeiro (2008). Located in the qualitative paradigm, with predominantly descriptive marks, our analysis suggested the categorization of online activities present in the courses LÃngua Inglesa II â A: CompreensÃo e ProduÃÃo Oral e Leitura e ProduÃÃo de Textos AcadÃmicos updated at VLE Solar, from Universidade Federal do CearÃ, and the description of literacy practices in virtual environments mediated, potentially, by the guidelines of the online activities proposed. The parameters considered for the analysis came from the summarization of Shetzer and Warschauerâs theoretical elaboration (2000), which lead us to the following dimensions of digital literacy: communication, construction and research. The data prompted the formation of an online activity typology, based on the literacy types demanded by them, namely: online activities strange to the potential of the web; online activities mediating the familiarization of the potential of the web; online activities mediating literacies for communication; and online activities mediating literacies for construction and research. The results of this analysis allowed the description of the literacy practices that are currently being privileged in this context, linking the type of online activity to the literacy practices that are potentially mediated by them and to the dimensions of digital literacy, according to Shetzer and Warschauer (2000). It follows that there is a need for technological formation for the language professional, because this way there will be the offering of online activities that addresses to the most diverse, or even countless, literacy practices in virtual environments.

Teachers' Lived Experiences of the Virtual Learning Environment: A Phenomenological Inquiry

Johansson, Megan January 2021 (has links)
This research project is about the lived experiences of upper secondary school and adult education teachers from a remote region of Sweden, during the global pandemic of 2020 – 2021. Educational change can be understood in terms of experiences, through listening to teachers’ voices, which have the capacity to bring new knowledge for future usage of digital platforms in education. Teaching is an embodied experience and opportunities for movement have become limited in the virtual learning environment. A radical change in the methods of communication has also occured, in particular the verbal and non-verbal clues of oral interaction, which differ in physical and virtual classrooms. Interpersonal relationships have been shown to be of the utmost importance for successful learning, and these need to be formed and maintained both online and offline. Some students are at risk of falling behind academically and socially due to remote learning. The research has shed light on this situation and illustrates how governments should work effectively with teachers to ensure that all students can succeed, regardless of individual setbacks experienced during the global pandemic. This is an ethical responsibility of importance to ensure that no student will be disadvantaged as a result of remote learning.

Enhanced technology acceptance model to explain and predict learners' behavioural intentions in learning management systems

Al-Aulamie, Abdullah January 2013 (has links)
E-learning has become the new paradigm for modern teaching moreover, the technology allows to break the resurrection of time and place by enabling people to learn whenever and wherever they want. In information system research, learners' acceptance of e-learning can be predicted and explained using technology acceptance models. This research developed enhanced technology acceptance model to explain students' acceptance of learning management systems (LMSs) in Saudi Arabia. The research model aims to investigate the viability of TAM constructs in a nonwestern country. Moreover, due to the cultural impact of the Saudi Arabian culture towards genders, the research addresses the moderating effect of gender towards LMSs acceptance. The developed model variables identification focuses on two motivation aspects, extrinsic and intrinsic. The developed model consisted of ten variables in total, which can be categorised into three groups. First, the extrinsic variables consisting of information quality, functionality, accessibility, and user interface design. Second, the intrinsic variables are consisting of computer playfulness, enjoyment, and learning goal orientation. Third, the TAM variables consisting of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and behavioural intention. Moreover, to validate and examine the developed model, a questionnaire tool was developed for data collection. Furthermore, the data was collected from electronically from three universities over six weeks. The research findings supported the developed model. Additionally, the identified variables were good critical in predicting and explaining students' acceptance of LMSs. The research applied structural equation modelling for statistical analysis using IBM AMOS. The research results confirmed the applicability of the developed model to explain the Saudi students' acceptance of LMSs. The developed model explained high variance among the dependent variables outperforming the excising models. The research improved the explanatory power of the TAM model through the identified variables. Furthermore, the research results showed that the extrinsic variables were stronger predictors of students' perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and behavioural intention. In addition, the results showed that males and females perception towards the LMS was significantly different. The male students' acceptance towards LMSs was higher than females. Moreover, enjoyment was the stronger determinant of females' behavioural intention.

Overcoming the Barrier: Virtual Learning : The Impact of learning in Second Life in Higher Education

Günes, Pinar January 2008 (has links)

Traditional education have for long been remaining without major changes made to the actual system. Up until very recently, there has been reluctance towards making fundamental and dramatic changes to the system, but as societies change and develop by mirroring on past experiences, new minds and new ways of thinking emerge suggesting changes and new developments. Consequently, new educational approaches such as e-learning and virtual learning have emerged.

Lately, technology has been transforming and developing than ever before and the demand for modifying accordingly to new technology has become a prerequisite for all industries and institutions. Already with e-learning, a derived concept is worthy of notice. Authenticity, meaning validity and accuracy, has been imposed as one major issue when it comes to e-learning, and also v-learning.

The main goal of this thesis is to present answers and suggestions to the following research questions:

Ø What value does a virtual education method create for the students?

Ø What implications are there for an education through Second Life and what is the significance of such an environment?

Ø What are the main auxiliary instruments or tools that enhance authenticity and the achievement of high presence in a virtual environment?

This research adopted an inductive approach using a qualitative research. The characterizations of knowledge used were descriptive knowledge, normative knowledge, explanatory research and evaluating research for the respective research questions. As a result of collaborating with Kalmar University, Sweden’s first Second Life course “Oral Production” was observed and to intensify the results, an interview was held with the course’s lecturer. The results were thereon analyzed and scrutinized based on the Empirical Findings, Theoretical Framework – consisting of mainly pedagogical theories and of articles concerning virtual learning environments.

The conclusion of this research entails the answers for the research questions. An education via a virtual environment is a development of e-learning, which is an enhancement of a traditional physical education. All students are persuaded to be active and participate in learning, which also promotes interconnectedness between students and teacher. Students can do role-playing and do presentations without feeling embarrassed about their “real” identities being represented. Main auxiliary instruments include virtual presentation boards, audio to communicate with each other and the avatar to direct the speech. Additionally, to enhance high presence in a virtual environment, involving all students with creative exercises seems to be another means in achieving high presence in a virtual environment.
