'Rural restructuring' : a multi-scalar analysis of the Otago Central Rail Trail

Dowsett, O. January 2008 (has links)
‘Rural restructuring’ has frequently been used to indicate the magnitude, and conceptualise the nature, of contemporary change in the countryside. Most notably, concern has focused upon the fundamental changes in economic and social organisation brought about by the increasing leverage of consumption-based activity as a path to rural development. By drawing on the relevant literature, however, I suggest in this thesis that the use of ‘rural restructuring’ as a conceptual framework has been inconsistent. The issue of scale is a case in point with scholars positioning their studies of rural change at varying levels of analysis. In response, I adopt Massey’s (2004) arguments about space and place to present an alternative model which considers ‘rural restructuring’ as a multi-scalar and mutually constitutive process. To explore the feasibility of approaching ‘rural restructuring’ in this way, the thesis focuses, in particular, upon the development of rural tourism at five different scales. These comprise the national scale (New Zealand), the regional scale (Central Otago), the sub-regional scale (the Otago Central Rail Trail), the business scale (five business case studies) and the individual scale (five entrepreneurial case studies). Reflecting the exploratory nature of the study and its multi-scalar approach, I use a number of qualitative research methods. These include interrogating the promotion of New Zealand and Central Otago as tourist destinations, cycling along the Otago Central Rail Trail, staying at accommodation businesses along the Rail Trail, and interviewing individual entrepreneurs about their experiences of business development. The analytical chapters of the thesis comprise an in-depth look at the promotion or experience of rural tourism development at each scale of analysis. Through identifying inter-scale consistencies and emphasising the reciprocal basis of such consistency, I present ‘rural restructuring’ as a multi-scalar and mutually constitutive process. Thus, I connect the national-scale targeting of the ‘interactive traveller’ to the promotion of Central Otago as a ‘World of Discovery’, before linking the development of the Otago Central Rail Trail to its regional context. I then investigate the nature of business development as intimately bound to the evolution of the Rail Trail, before finally tying these entrepreneurial creations to individual accounts of exhaustion and enjoyment that emerge from the operation of tourism businesses. The thesis ends by concluding that ‘rural restructuring’ can indeed be considered a multi-scalar and mutually constitutive process, worked out simultaneously at wide-ranging but interconnected levels of change.

HÁLA TREJBALOVÁ, Eva January 2011 (has links)
This diploma work concentrates on carrying out an analysis of transport services in the region of Trhové Sviny. The aim of the work was to carry out an exhaustive evaluation of transport services in administrative district of municipality with extended competence Trhové Sviny on the basis of situational analysis, analysis of transport service and terrain investigation. The emphasis was put above all on the evaluation of transport services usable for tourism and conditions for cycling and hiking. On the basis of the results of the analysis of transport services and terrain investigation, it came to suggesting measures to make the region more attractive. In the work, two hypothesis were set the result of which is based on the made analyses. It resulted from the work that the most common way of transport in the region is road transport, especially by car and by bus. The region is sought for cycling and hiking as well. The main shortcoming of the region is seen in the level of roads which are even dangerous here and there. It could also come to improvement of the level of stops of regular bus service. Another suggestion is to increase connections transporting bicycles by one work day in the season. At the end of the work, a project concentrating on cycle nature trails was created. The project results from the knowledge gained from the foregoing analyses and investigation. This project takes into consideration natural, technical and historical attractions of the region.

Efeitos da acupuntura sobre os pacientes com asma leve e moderada persistentes: um estudo randomizado, controlado e cruzado / Effects of acupuncture on patients with mild to moderate persistent asthma: a randomized, controlled, crossover

Hong Jin Pai 11 March 2014 (has links)
This survey has been conducted in order to evaluate the effects of acupuncture in patients with persistent mild and moderate asthma (according to GINA criteria 2003), using beta agonist and/or inhaled glucocorticoid. Methods and patients: This is a prospective, double blinded, randomized and cross-over study with two branches: 74 patients diagnosed with mild and moderate asthma were divided into two groups: Group I with 31, initiating with real acupuncture and Group II, starting with sham acupuncture. Medical interview and laboratory tests including spirometry, induced sputum citology, exhaled NO measurement, quality of life questionnaire (SF-36 and QQL), besides, daily symptom scores and measurement of peak-flow were performed, in the beginning of the study, and in the end of each phase of treatment. Phase I: laboratory tests and other qualitative measurements. There were 10 real acupuncture weekly sessions to Group I and 10 sham acupuncture sessions to Group II in Phase II. On the other hand, in the Phase IV, there was an exchange between Group I and Group II, which was receiving real acupuncture started to receive sham, and vice-versa, the number of sessions remained the same (10 weekly sessions). Phase III, during the interval between Phase II and Phase IV, there was an interval of 4 weeks of washout. Phase V: laboratory tests and other qualitative measurements. Results: There was no difference beween both the groups in all criteria of evaluation pré treatment, with only na exception: in the Group II there was large inflammatory cell counts. However, there was a significant reduction in eosinophils (p = 0.035) and neutrophils (p = 0.047), and increase of macrophages (p = 0.001), improved peak-flow measurement in the morning (p = 0.01) in Group II (started with sham) in Phase IV. In Daily Symptons Score, there was a significant reduction in use of rescue medication (p = 0.043) in Group I (real acupuncture) in Phase II and after received sham acupuncture (Phase IV), there were less cough (p = 0.007), less wheezing (p = 0.037), less dyspnea (p < 0.001) e less use of rescue medication (p < 0.001). In Group II, after received sham (Phase II), there were less cough (p = 0.037), less wheezing (p = 0.013) and less dyspnea (p = 0.014). In Phase IV, less cough (p = 0.040), wheezing (p = 0.012), dyspnea (p < 0.001) and less nocturnal awakening (p = 0.009). In the questionnaires of quality of life SF-36 and QQL, several domains were found to be improved after received sham acupuncture in both groups, comparing phase II against phase I, but the results found after received real acupuncture were better than sham in both groups. Although there was no statistic difference between both groups. However, there was no difference in exhaled NO and spirometry measurement. Conclusion: This survey demonstrated that the use of real acupuncture in a group of patients with large inflammatory cells counts could have contributed to reduce symptoms, improve quality of life, improved peak-flow measurement in the morning and reduced inflammatory cells count in induced sputum, therefore, acupuncture is a safe healing techniques, presented no adverse effects observed in this study, and could of great help in treatment of patients with mild and moderate asthma

Využití komprehensivní dvoudimenzionální plynové chromatografie s hmotnostně spektrometrickou detekcí pro metabolomickou analýzu houby Gloeophyllum trabeum / Use of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometric detection for metabolomic analysis of Gloeophyllum trabeum fungus

Kuchler, Ondřej January 2019 (has links)
Fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum (Agaricomytes: Gloeophyllates) is a brown rot wood-decay fungus which produces a vast spectrum of volatile secondary metabolites. Scientific publications state, that one of the metabolites produced by G. trabeum, can be the substance (3Z,6Z,8E)-dodecatrien-1-ol. This chemical substance is also the main component of trail-following pheromone of Rhinotermitidae termite family. In this diploma thesis, I was trying to verify whether various species of G. trabeum are in fact capable of producing the substance (3Z,6Z,8E)-dodecatrien-1-ol. I was also focusing on the effects of saccharides, present in nutrient solutions, on quantitative and qualitative change in composition of volatile secondary metabolites produced by G. trabeum. The saccharides I used for my research were - maltose, fructose, sucrose, xylose, and mannose. The analysis was made by using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography separation technique with time-of-flight mass spectrometric detection (GC×GC-TOFMS). During my research I discovered that one of obtained species of G. trabeum can produce substance (3Z,6Z,8E)-dodecatrien-1-ol, but only under specific conditions. It is produced when cultivating on Petri dishes on agar - cellulose growth media. The measurement was further validated by...

Architektonická studie cyklistického stadionu /dráhy/ Favorit Brno /na volné ploše v Brně Komárově/. / Architectural study of the cycling stadium / runway / Favorit Brno / on the open space in.

Krejčová, Zdenka January 2018 (has links)
Architectural study of the cycling studium/ runway / Favorit Brno / on the open space in. The urban problem of the present area is the poor technical condition of the buildings, the inadequate function of the buildings. The aim of the proposal is to create a significant area of both professional and recreational sport. The main part of the work is devoted to the design of a new cycling stadium owned by TJ Favorit Brno. The hall should have sufficient capacity and facilities to hold international sporting events in cycling and athletics. At the same time it should be useful for smaller races and other events. Another requirement is that the stadium can provide enough facilities for the TJ Favorit Brno cycling club. The home base is currently a cycling stadium at the Brno Exhibition Grounds. This stadium is currently inadequate, serving only as a training course. It does not meet the conditions of the International Federation of UCI. The design of the variable space of the hall deserves a further attention at least, beacuse it will serve athletics or other sporting events. The cycling stadium is located in the northern part of the grounds. It places emphasis on the scattered surfaces in the immediate vicinity of the stadium, easy orientation and layout of entries from all sides of the object, separation of athletes from spectators. The main expression element of the exterior is a glazed facade wall, with a perforated sheet metal. Providing night lighting and putting visitors into action. The attractiveness of the whole area is enhanced by the newly designed park. A café and relaxation areas are also proposed. The total area will be separated from traffic. Two parking spaces with sufficient capacity for the whole area will be created at its edge. Transport within the premises will only be accessible for service and operation.
