framework is the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) which is here used to
discuss the book Graduado em Marginalidade by Sacolinha, writer and
resident of a periphery. The objective is to understand the changing of identity
in the main character of the novel. Based on the experiential component of the
ideational metafunction (Halliday 1994), I investigate the way the lexicogrammatical
choices reveal the changing of identity of the young Burdão who
becomes a criminal in the course of the novel. The concept of Indisciplinary
Applied Linguistics (LA) acting in the contemporaneity is key for this research,
for understanding the political role of the researcher. The Applied Linguistics
emerges as of great interest in the studies of the language in use and points out
that an applied linguist conducting one s study must be critical. This research
also contributes to discussions about anti-language (Halliday 1982), showing
that the reconstruction of the identity of excluded individuals, can be in an antisociety
environment, as what happens to Burdão. The analyzes are performed
with the support of the methodological tools of Corpus Linguistics (CL), through

As

Previous issue date: 2013-06-19 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This research aims at analysing the discourse of ribeirinha communities located across São Francisco River in order to identify patterns of beliefs and social values.
Who are the people living riverside? Which social realities bound them together? Which representations build the society they are in?
The language choices made when we are part of a given discourse are not arbitrary; they are filled with the speaker s identity, her meanings and beliefs.
The theoretical background of this research lies on the Systemic Functional-Linguistics (Halliday, 1994, 2004), since the analysis carried on focuses on the System of Transitivity. Here we address the corpus from a perspective which recognizes language as a social phenomenon, since this study establishes a dialogue with other areas such as anthropology, sociology and cultural studies.
The research corpus is a number of interviews collected in ribeirinha communities across São Francisco riverside, taken from 2005 through 2008 by the photojournalist João Zinclar. The interviews took place in communities which were located in the five states which border the river, at the time was the controversy over the transposition of the water from the river.
The analysis revealed a strong sense of sense of community by the ribeirinhos. It has also shown a strong feeling of proud, result of the fact they are part of a social/ethnic group (Indians, quilombola etc.). Their territory the riverside is responsible for mediating the relationship across the many communities. On the other hand, it was clear such communities are suffering deterritorialization, losing the place where they affective and symbolic values were conceived. This has created a great feeling of anguish and distress felt by the ribeirinha communities and resulting in situations of social conflict / Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar o discurso de comunidades ribeirinhas localizadas na extensão do rio São Francisco, identificando padrões de crenças e valores.

Previous issue date: 2017-11-27 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / The objective of this master’s degree thesis is the examination of the persuasive process that runs through an editorial published in the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo and another one in The New York Times concerning the impeachment process which removed Brazil’s president Dilma Rousseff from office in 2016. The research focuses on the issue of the representation of the event as well as their social actors in both newspapers, analyzing the correspondence between the choices of certain linguistic forms and the ideologies and relations of power that underlie these forms. Guided by proposals for Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and with the support of the analytical context offered by Systemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL), the project examines, in particular, two dimensions of the grammar of the clause: transitivity and modality/appraisal, respectively associated to the ideational and interpersonal metafunctions of language, according to SFL. Through this this theoretical-methodological support, it is attempted to unravel both explicit and implicit persuasive processes on which newspapers count to persuade their readers. For this purpose, the research should answer the following questions: (a) how does a transitivity and modality/ appraisal contribute to the persuasive process in editorials? (b) how can the underlying ideology of the two newspapers be revealed? The research shows that the Brazilian editorial "Muitos anos em um" blames government institutions for the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, whereas the American editorial "Brazil’s ousted president" attributes responsibility to former president Dilma Roussef. The support of SFL through its ideational and interpersonal metafunctions, as well as complementary theories, were paramount to characterize the persuasion that pervades the editorials to achieve the alignment of the reader with the newspapers’ positions / O objetivo desta dissertação de mestrado é o exame do processo persuasivo que percorre um editorial publicado na Folha de S. Paulo e outro no The New York Times referentes ao impeachment – que destituiu a presidente do Brasil, Dilma Rousseff, em 2016.

To speak or not to speak : A critical discourse analysis of course literature on so called honor related violenceYilmaz, Melis, Nordström, Tove January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analyze the different discourses linked to so called honor related violence in course literature from term 1 through 6 during the fall of 2018 at the department of social work at Stockholm university. This due to the extensive debates on the subject that implies varied opinions from both media and the research community. To analyze the different discourses, Fairclough's critical discourse analysis is used by looking for modality, transitivity and intertextuality in the different texts. The analysis circles around three different discourses. One is the “us and them” discourse, which differentiates the Swedish ideals from “others” which are portrayed as worse. The second discourse handles “critique against polarization”, which can be connected to post colonialism that criticizes the “us and them” discourse. The third discourse is the “precautionary” discourse that can be connected to social constructionism, whereas the texts leave room for interpretation as they rarely make any certain statements. Throughout all of these discourses we also found that the perpetrator and the victim rarely is spoken of when talking honor related violence, as compared to “normal violence”, and more often structural explanations rather than individual ones were used.

W3 Trust Model (W3TM): a trust-profiling framework to assess trust and transitivity of trust of web-based services in a heterogeneous web environmentYang, Yinan, Information Technology & Electrical Engineering, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 2005 (has links)
The growth of eCommerce is being hampered by a lack of trust between providers and consumers of Web-based services. While Web trust issues have been addressed by researchers in many disciplines, a comprehensive approach has yet to be established. This thesis proposes a conceptual trust-profiling framework???W3TF???which addresses issues of trust and user confidence through a range of new user-centred trust measures???trust categories, trust domains, transitivity of trust, fading factor analysis, standalone assessment, hyperlinked assessment and relevance assessment. While others now use the concept of transitivity of trust, it was first introduced by this research in 1998. The thesis also illustrates how W3TF can narrow the gap/disconnection between the hierarchical PKI trust environment and the horizontal Web referral environment. The framework incorporates existing measures of trust (such as Public Key Infrastructure), takes account of consumer perceptions by identifying trust attributes, and utilises Web technology (in the form of metadata), to create a practical, flexible and comprehensive approach to trust assessment. The versatility of the W3TF is demonstrated by applying it to a variety of cases from trust literature and to the hypothetical case study that provided the initial stimulus for this research. It is shown that the framework can be expanded to accommodate new trust attributes, categories and domains, and that trust can be ???weighed??? (and therefore evaluated) by using various mathematical formulae based on different theories and policies. The W3TF addresses identified needs, narrows the gaps in existing approaches and provides a mechanism to embrace current and future efforts in trust management. The framework is a generic form of trust assessment that can help build user confidence in an eCommerce environment. For service providers, it offers an incentive to create websites with a high number of desired trust attributes. For consumers, it enables more reliable judgments to be made. Hence, Web trust can be enhanced.

As Fate Would Have It : A corpus-based study of Fate from an American perspectiveKanmert, Sofi January 2009 (has links)
<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>This essay is based on an investigation carried out with the help of the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). Taking the system of transitivity as its theoretical base and using spoken and written discourse as its primary source, this study aspired to find out what kinds of actions Americans perceive <em>Fate</em> to perform, for example physical, mental or verbal,<em> </em>in order to control what happens to people. It also aimed to reveal what actions people are said to perform in their attempts to control <em>Fate</em>. Do Americans deem <em>Fate</em> capable of, for instance, “deciding”, “talking” or “conspiring” and do they say that people, for example, “challenge”, “defy” or “defeat” <em>Fate</em>? Furthermore, a comparison was made in terms of the actions performed by <em>Fate</em> and people between the different domains of discourse represented in the corpus: spoken, fiction, magazine, newspaper and academic.</p><p>Among other things, this investigation shows that in American discourse both <em>Fate</em> and people are perceived to resort to physical strategies rather than mental or verbal ones in their endeavor to control one another.</p><p> </p>

Acquisition of some mechanisms of transitivity alternation in Arctic Quebec InuktitutAllen, Shanley E. M. (Shanley Elizabeth Marilou) January 1994 (has links)
This thesis discusses the first language acquisition of three morphosyntactic mechanisms of transitivity alternation in arctic Quebec Inuktitut. Data derive from naturalistic longitudinal spontaneous speech samples collected over a nine-month period from four Inuit children aged 2;0 through 2;10 at outset. Both basic and advanced forms of passive structures are shown to be used productively by Inuktitut-speaking children at an early age relative to English-speaking children, but consistent in age with speakers of non-Indo-European languages reported on in the literature; potential explanations of this difference include frequency of caregiver input and details of language structure. Morphological causatives appear slightly later in the acquisition sequence, and their first instances reflect use of unanalyzed routines. Lexical causatives are present from the earliest ages studied. Evidence of a period of overgeneralization of lexical causatives in one subject at the same time as the morphological causative shows signs of being productively acquired suggests that the seeming overgeneralization may reflect nothing more than as yet unstable use of the morphological causative. Noun incorporation structures are shown to be used productively by Inuktitut-speaking children at an early age relative to Mohawk-speaking children; potential explanations of this difference include details of language structure and relative language use in the environments of the learners. Findings are considered in light of current debates in the literature concerning continuity versus maturation of grammatical structure, and concerning the functional categories available to the child at early stages of acquisition. Data presented argue against maturation, and suggest that all functional categories can be accessed by the Inuktitut-speaking child early in the acquisition process.

A systemic functional interpretation of Thai grammar: an exploration of Thai narrative discourse / Exploration of Thai narrative discoursePatpong, Pattama January 2006 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Macquarie University, Division of Linguistics & Psychology, Department of Linguistics, 2006. / Bibliography: p. 742-762. / Systemic functional linguistics as a framework for description -- An overview of the grammar of Thai -- Textual clause grammar: the system of THEME -- Interpersonal clause grammar: the system of MOOD -- Experiential grammar at clause rank: the system of TRANSITIVITY -- Thai narrative register: context, semantics and lexicogrammatical profiles -- Conclusions. / This research is a text-based study of the grammar of standard Thai, based on systemic functional linguistics. It is the first attempt to explore Thai in systemic functional terms, that is with the account of the grammar of Thai being interpreted as resource for making meaning that is part of language as a higher-order semiotic system. This account utilizes a corpus-based methodology and explores extensive evidence from natural narrative texts, specifically fourteen Thai folk tales. This systemic functional interpretation of Thai is also supported by an investigation of other text types (See Chapter 2). The research has both intermediate and long term implications. The description itself will be a resource for the Thai community and it will also contribute to the growing area of linguistic typology based on systemic descriptions. The long term implication of the research is that the description will be used as a model for text-based research into minority languages in Thailand. -- There are two introductory chapters to the study. The first chapter discusses some general issues concerned with systemic functional theory and data used in the development of the description of the grammar of Thai. The second chapter is a preview chapter which provides an overview of the grammar of Thai in terms of three strands of meaning: textual, interpersonal, and the experiential mode of ideational meanings. The systemic functional interpretation is based on an exploration of a number of texts with a wide generic spread (e.g. news reports, topographic texts, encyclopedia, and television interview). -- Chapter 3 to Chapter 7 constitute the main body of the thesis. Chapter 3 deals with the textual metafunction: it explores the THEME system as the enabling resource for the clause grammar for presenting interpersonal and experiential meanings as a flow of information in context. Chapter 4 is concerned with the interpersonal metafunction. It is focused on exploring the MOOD system, that is, the resource of clause grammar for enacting social roles and relationships in an exchange. Chapter 5 is concerned with the experiential mode of the ideational metafunction: it investigates the TRANSITIVITY system, which is the resource of the clause grammar for construing our experience of the world around and inside us. As this thesis is based mainly on narrative discourse, Chapter 6 profiles Thai narratives in terms of context, semantics, and lexicogrammar. Firstly, at the context stratum, the chapter describes the generic structure potential of Thai folk tales. Secondly, the chapter describes the realization of this generic structure by semantic properties. Finally, the chapter is concerned with quantitatively exploring the narratives on the basis of clause-rank systems, at the stratum of lexicogrammar, across the metafunctional spectrum midway up the cline of instantiation. In the final chapter, the study concludes by summarizing the preceding chapters, pointing out research implications and limitations, and suggesting some areas for further studies. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / xxxv, 762 ill. +

Previous issue date: 2014-08-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work deals with the oblique pronouns o(s), a(s), me, te, starting from a syntactic
traditional analysis for a discursive approach based on the concepts of the functional linguistic
of the prototipicity, speech transitivity (Hopper and Thompson, 1980), discursive relevance
and textual-discursive function (Matos, 2008). The data analysed were extracted of the corpus
composed of three volumes of narratives narrated by Luiza Tereza, being this corpus part of
the acquis of the Paraibana popular culture present in the NUPPO (Núcleo de Pesquisa e
Documentação da Cultura Popular/Centre of Research and Documentation of the Popular
Culture). It has been found that the study of the grammatical categories is not valid if made in
an isolate way without observing, for example, speech transitivity that signal the syntactic
function involved. It is important to consider the prototypical function so that the analysis be
done on what is regular and in doing so the dimension of the results obtained is more
comprehensive, as the regular is more frequent, in other words, more recurring, facilitating the
more efficient comprehension as a function of the study. It was also confirmed the hypothesis
that the pronoun me listed for analysis is part of the narratives of high transitivity level, being
more to figure than to background. The prototypical function of the pronoun me is the
function of the object, being this direct or indirect and in both high discursive transitivity is
presented.
É importante considerar a função
