The art of being a bureaucrat and a fellow human being at the same time : - a study into the employment counselor's work situation

Clason, Gunilla, Samuelsson, Anneli January 2010 (has links)
Our sociological study is based on interviews and a questionnaire survey. Our aim is to increase public understanding of employment counselor’s situation. We interviewed both employment counselor and unemployed people to explore how the relationship is influenced by laws and regulations. We have used a qualitative method because it is a prerequisite for answering our problem formulation. We also have a quantitative element in the form of surveys to get width and generalizability.   We have analyzed our results based on sociological theories. Our result, which we present in the analysis, shows that most employment counselor feel limited because of the strict rules that prohibit them to do everything they wish for their customers. The main limitation however, is perceived to be the lack of time, which we link back to the laws governing the organization. The public’s negative view we also connect back to the laws and regulations surrounding the employment service organization.

I am a paper mill vorker and been so all my life" : A qualitative study of the meaning of work and working identity for elderly long-term unemployed an a Swedish context

Mjörnman, Magnus, Olgerfelt, Mick January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study is to understand elderly long-term unemployed situation by their experiences of unemployment and how this affect how they construct their identity. The study focuses on people in the age group 50-64 which been out of work for sex months or longer and have a low education. A qualitative method was used and the data for the study was collected by semi-structured interviews with seven individuals. The result was analyzed using Pierre Bourdieus theoretical terms field, habitus and symbolic capital. The study shows, among other things, that work is really important for the respondents and it’s not primary because of the economic part but the social part. Furthermore the results showed that the respondents had different strategies to cope with long-term unemployment. The most prominent strategy was to create a similar structure in their weekday as they had when they were working. The respondents also see themselves as their old profession instead of being unemployed and have difficulties to search work in other fields of the labour market.

Burhan, Amina January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this qualitative study is to gain a deeper understanding of how young people whoare unemployed or have experienced unemployment, experience the situation and how theyapprehend themselves in relation to unemployment. I performed semi-structured interviewswith five young women and men. Three theoretical perspectives have been used for myanalysis, Marie Jahoda’s deprivation theory, Mikael Nordenmark´s PEN-model and HansBerglund’s action theory. The results show that the majority of the respondents perceive the situation as unemployed asdifficult and stressful. Four out of five have more or less felt depressed or sad. The depressionis described as a recurrent, not a permanent condition. Furthermore, the results show that thetime of unemployment is relevant to how the situation is perceived. Study findings alsosuggest that those who value work the most suffer most from not having a job. The result alsoindicates that several of the youths feel like the unemployment had a negative impact on theirconfidence and self-image. Four out of five respondents spent most of their time looking forjobs. Those who were actively looking for work were also relatively optimistic about theirchances of getting a job.

Grievances matter : unemployment and the decline of the piquetero movement (2003-2007)

Perez, Marcos Emilio 08 July 2011 (has links)
The unemployed workers movement in Argentina (also known as the piqueteros) emerged during the mid 1990s, as a response to the increasing poverty and unemployment produced by the economic reforms implemented by the national government. Its extraordinary growth and leading role in the protests of 2001-2002 led many scholars to believe that it would become an enduring aspect of Argentina’s politics. However, after 2002, the movement entered a period of decline, which was reflected in the loss of members, support, and public influence. In this paper, I study the trajectory of this movement in order to advance certain arguments regarding the relation between grievances and collective action. I will argue that a key factor behind the decline of the movement was the amelioration of the main grievance which gave it rise. The emergence and consolidation of the piqueteros coincided with a period of increasing unemployment. However, after 2002, Argentina’s economy entered a phase of intense growth which significantly improved labor market conditions. The new scenario deeply affected the movement’s influence. Therefore, the study of the piqueteros can provide significant insight about social movement theory. In particular, it suggests that the relation between grievances and collective action is more direct than what the resource mobilization and political process approaches predict. In other words, the case of the piqueteros shows that grievances matter: although several factors may mediate between them and collective action, their effect is never negligible. In addition, this paper addresses a more “empirical” gap. Although there is an increasing body of literature about the decline of the piquetero movement, most studies focus on political variables and neglect the potential role played by the reduction in unemployment. In other words, in exploring the causes of this downfall, authors usually center on the emergence of a new government in 2003, the divisions between different organizations, and the loss of legitimacy among other sectors of society. By focusing on an alternative explanation, I expect to contribute to the understanding of this movement. / text

The experiences and perceptions of unemployed people who participated in the skills development programme : a case study of KwaCeza.

Khumalo, Thobile Qaphelisile. January 2009 (has links)
South Africa is currently experiencing a paucity of skills in certain occupations and high rate of illiteracy. In order to address these challenges, the government promulgated legislations such as the Skill Development Act, 1998, Skills Development Levies Act, 1999, South African Qualifications Act, (SAQA) and other policies aimed at reducing the rate of illiteracy through providing Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET). These are progressive and commendable policies, as part of their implementation, many people (unemployed and employed) have received training in various trades using funds from the National Skills Fund (NSF). The study was therefore undertaken in order to learn about beneficiaries’ experiences and perceptions they hold towards these programmes. This study was conducted at KwaCeza through the Masibumbane community development project. The members of the Masibumbane community development project received skills training which was funded by the Department of Labour (NSF) in 2005. The training was aimed at enhancing their chances of accessing income generating opportunities. They were trained in carpentry, bricklaying, sawing and poultry farming. The study sought to establish how these project members perceived the skills development programme and learn more about their experiences during and after receiving training. The findings of the study revealed that the Skills Development Programme is perceived certainly as one of the effective programmes the government has ever introduced in South Africa. If well co-ordinated, it can play an important role in closing the skills gap that exists in the South African economy. However, the main challenge is that the majority of the people trained could not access job opportunities and have therefore lost hope. It became clear that the training they received was not demand led. The training was not linked to job opportunities available in the community, the people that were trained had no choice, but to take what was offered to them as they were desperate for income generating opportunities. The group that was trained in sewing and poultry farming had no market for their produce. This therefore implies that the Department of Labour as the custodian of skills development cannot successfully create employment opportunities for the unemployed people without the participation of various state departments and private sector. Other stakeholders need to work hand in glove with the Department of Labour in order to ensure that people are equipped with relevant skills and are able to access income generating opportunities in the open labour market. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2009.

A narrative inquiry into the evolution of values experienced by a laid-off worker in China : a view of contemporary China through the eyes of one family

Wang, Qian, 1972- January 2008 (has links)
As we mature, we always change what we think about life, and as we absorb change and evolve within our particular experience, we undergo a personal process of receiving and creating values. Hermans (2001) argues that values define a person and that an analysis of these values is the best way to understand someone and the society of which that person is a part. This thesis is a narrative inquiry into the evolution of values experienced by a laid-off worker in the changing social context of contemporary China. The main body of the thesis consists of three parts: (1) my brother Quan's childhood, (2) my brother's youth in Mao's time, and (3) my brother's experience of becoming a laid-off worker in Deng's time when my brother was in his middle age. I use the life history of my brother to exemplify the lives of those in China who are caught between opposing political directions to provide some insight into China's evolution in the late 20th and early 21st century.
