SUSTAINABILITY OF MULTI-STORY WOOD BUILDINGS : Can the Swedish forestry keep up with the demand?

Kozak, Celine January 2023 (has links)
Wood has been traditionally used as a construction material in Nordic countries such as Sweden dating back to the 12th century. Using wood as a building material for the construction of buildings with more than two stories became the norm around the 1850s and has only increased with the pressing need for more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to materials such as concrete. The aim of this thesis is to bring attention to attitudes towards environmental, economic, and social sustainability of commercial multi-story wood buildings amongst industry professionals. Qualitative data was gathered through digitally conducted, semistructured interviews with six people from within fields related to carpentry, architecture, ecology, and forestry. Three buildings were briefly studied as a part of a case study on multi-story wood buildings: Fyrtornet in Malmö, Sweden, Sara  Cultural Centre in Skellefteå, Sweden, and The Oakwood Timber Tower in London, England. The results showed that the practice of constructing multi-story wood buildings wasn’t sustainable because of the intense short rotation forestry pushing ecosystems to extinction. Wood was still considered to be a good alternative to carbon intense materials such as concrete. Limitations include relying on only qualitative data as the methodology, for future research the author suggests conducting a comparative Life cycle assessment (LCA) with a cradle-to-cradle approach, as a way to study environmental impacts of timber versus other natural materials available in Sweden such as clay, straw and hemp.

Green Marketing : An analysis of Green Marketing Campaigns

Loewenberg, Estefania January 2015 (has links)
This thesis presents the problem surrounding green marketing, which involves the lack of knowledge of green consumption by the consumer, and the threats of green washing from companies who present green marketing without achieving the green marketing criteria. An implementation of the green marketing theories in the cases of Patagonia and Klättermusen: green marketing five “I’s” and the green marketing three “C’s” was done in order to understand if the two companies fit the green marketing profile. This thesis aims to contribute to gain deeper knowledge from the outdoor consumer perspective on green marketing campaigns, and answer the question to how effective these campaigns are to the outdoor consumer, through a qualitative research.

Remediation of soiled masonry in historic structures contaminated by the Gulf Coast oil spill of 2010

Vora, Payal Rashmikant 05 September 2014 (has links)
The objective of this thesis was to understand the factors that affect the selection of remedial treatments for the complex staining of masonry materials on cultural resources located in environmentally sensitive sites such as Fort Livingston, Louisiana, on the Gulf Coast of the United States and other locations impacted by pollutants including crude oil. After the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in April 2010, the brick-and-tabby Fort was stained by crude oil. The EPA recommends SWA for removal of oil from solid surfaces such as masonry; however, limited research has been conducted into SWA effective for removal of crude oil from masonry, particularly in remote and environmentally sensitive locations. Research was conducted collaboratively at NCPTT and UT-Austin to identify a series of suitable SWA and to develop methods for evaluating SWA effectiveness in the laboratory. Products were selected for laboratory evaluation that do not require long dwell times, are easy to transport to the site, can be applied with portable equipment, produce effluent that can be collected for off-site disposal, and are listed on the EPA-published NCP Product Schedule. Two sets of 36 brick samples each were soiled with crude oil from the Fort. One set of samples was artificially weathered and one set was unweathered prior to being cleaned with selected six SWA. Laboratory evaluation shows that the primary factor affecting cleaner selection for remediation of brick masonry stained by light crude oil is the extent of weathering of oil on the masonry. For light crude oil, such as that spilled in the Gulf, organic solvent-based cleaners may be most effective if cleaning is possible soon after the staining occurs. Aqueous surfactant cleaners are most effective for removing weathered light crude oil from masonry. The following SWA listed in order of performance are recommended for field trials at Fort Livingston: 1. Cytosol; 2. SC-1000; 3. De-Solv-It APC; 4. De-Solv-It Industrial followed by De-Solv-It APC; 5. De-Solv-It Industrial followed by SC-1000. / text

Identification Studies of Bacillus Spores Using Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Kunnil, Joseph January 2005 (has links)
Fluorescence spectroscopy was examined as a potential technique for identifying aerosol particles like bacterial spores. This technique was used for laboratory measurements on some common biological agent simulants. We have measured the intrinsic steady-state fluorescence emission spectra as a function of the excitation wavelength for several bacterial spores (washed and unwashed) in dry and aqueous suspensions at room temperature using excitation wavelengths from 200 to 600 nm. These measurements were compared to those of common, naturally occurring biological components like fungal spores and pollen and non spore samples like ovalbumin. The spectra of samples were combined into fluorescence profiles or fluorescence fingerprints. Different substrates were used for collection and detection of spores. Each bacterium produces a unique in vitro fluorescence profile when measured in dried and aqueous suspension and exhibits a strong maximum in its fluorescence emission spectrum near 330-340 nm. The fluorescence profiles were reproducible. The complexity of microorganisms made the interpretation of their spectral signature a difficult task. Principal components analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis were done as a data reduction technique for detection and identification from different backgrounds. PCA illustrates that linear combination of detected fluorescence intensities, which are present in different ratios in each of samples studied, can be used to discriminate biological agent simulants from other biological samples. The hydration effects, washing effects and the role of tryptophan on spore fluorescence were also investigated. The emission spectra of the dried spores showed a maximum near 330 nm, suggesting a hydrophobic environment for its tryptophan residues. The aqueous solution of tryptophan showed fluorescence shifted to 360 nm and in ethanol solution the maximum was shifted to 340 nm, suggesting a rather more polar average location of the tryptophan. To find the limit of detection we measured the quantum efficiency (QE) of a few samples. We concluded that spectroscopy techniques coupled with effective interpretation models are applicable to biological simulants agents. Método de detecção automática da quantidade de carga em máquinas de lavar roupas / A method of load estimation in washing machines

Petronilho, Andre 22 April 2013 (has links)
In this dissertation a method for automatic load size detection will be presented, so the water level and the washing cycles can be chosen by a washing machine. The machine where this algorithm was developed is a top load washing machine that uses a brushless permanent magnet motor (BPM motor). The algorithm that is going to be described here uses a neural network to deduce the load size based on information available on this machine such as, motor current, basket speed, power supply voltage and others. These signals are available on most washing machines that uses this kind of motor. The use of an algorithm that detects automatically and precisely the load amount is very important in order to avoid the waste of soap, bleach and softner and, more importantly, water during the wash task. Moreover the use of the neural network will be compared with a linear methods called DOE (design of experiment). Finally, results showing the difference between both methods are presented.

Identificação de substâncias biologicamente ativas, produzidas por laranjeira Valência (Citrus sinensis), envolvidas na ativação de estruturas de infecção de Colletotrichum acutatum / Identification of biologically active substances, produced by citrus Valência (Citrus sinensis), involved in the activation of infection structures of Colletotrichum acutatum

Vilela, Ariana Elisei 12 November 2010 (has links)
Nenhum tratamento alterou o crescimento micelial do fungo. / The Post Bloom Fruit Drop is a limiting disease in citrus production around the world and the symptoms are associated to high rainfall and intense blooming. The fungus is found in a quiescent state in plant organs and under the presence of exogenous nutrients it restarts the infection process. Thus, the objectives of the work were: (i) evaluate the direct effect of washing crude water (WCW) obtained from flowers, flower buds and leaves of Valencia orange trees on the mycelial growth, germination and appressorium formation by C. acutatum; ii) evaluate the effect of volatile compounds released by the WCW and the fractions obtained from the washing water from flower and flower buds in the germination and appressorium formation, and (iii) establish a methodology for observing structures of fungal infection in citrus leaves. Two bioassays were carried out to evaluate germination, appressorium formation and mycelial growth in the presence of WCW. The first one was represented by the treatments: control (C), washing water from flowers (F), flowers buds (FB), young leaves (YL), old leaves (OL), and dilution (1:10, 1:100 , 1:1000 and 1:10000; v/v ) from the flower washing water. The second one included control (C), washing water from flowers (F), flowers buds (FB), young leaves (YL), old leaves (OL) and all of washings autoclaved. The volatiles released by the washing water from flowers and flowers buds were first separated and identified by SPME-GC-MS and then fractions were obtained according to the retention time of each peak found, making up five fractions for each sample. A bioassay for germination and appressorium formation was carried out by using the fractions obtained and placed into direct contact with the spores. To observe the fungal infection structures, leaf discs from citrus plants were inoculated, subject to bleaching and then stained for observation under a microscope. The results obtained by using the WCW samples showed that all treatments stimulated spore germination and appressorium formation by C. acutatum. The volatiles did not show any inductive effect on the spores, but when fractionated and placed into direct contact with the fungal structures, the fractions from the flowers buds showed a higher inducing activity when compared to the control. None treatment changed the in vitro mycelial growth of the fungus and the best visualization of spores in the leaves occurred 48 hours after inoculation. Based upon on these results, it can be concluded that the crude washing water stimulated germination and appressorium formation, and only the volatiles present in the fraction flowers buds were able to stimulate the germination of C. acutatum spores.

Reprodução e caracterização de manchamentos causados por desodorante antitranspirante em malha de algodão buscando melhorar o desempenho de remoção / Reproduction and characterization of antiperspirant deodorant staining caused by cotton knit seeking to improve the removal performance.

Castro, Jordana Rodrigues de 09 December 2014 (has links)
This work was carried out to reproduction, evaluation and characterization of staining caused by antiperspirant deodorant, sweat, products of the washing process and detergent powder, fabric softener, temperature ironing shirts in cotton knits. Searching for a better characterization of these staining, three groups of studies selected, prone to getting stains on the underarm area individuals, were performed. Individuals made use deodorant and fragrance with shirts and used for a period of eleven days, and one of the subjects only used the shirt without deodorant and one of the shirts was submitted to without deodorant use by individuals. At the end of each day the shirts were washed with detergent powder, fabric softener, dryer dried and pressed, simulating a condition of household. The stained shirts were subjected to instrumental evaluations spectrophotometry (colorimeter), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive analysis (EDS) and measuring the effusivity and thermal conductivity and Atomic Emission Spectrometry by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP-OES). These shirts were also subjected to two processes: removal by cleaning (LS) and chemicals (RAQ). After the removal process tees instrumental colorimetric evaluation, conductivity and thermal effusivity, SEM, tensile strength were submitted. colorimetric analyzes for all t used by the participants of the study groups showed values of E * (0.87 to 32.43), indicating a change of color visually noticeable in the underarm area. The microscopy of the samples also showed an accumulation of some materials in this region that may have influenced the heat exchange material with the environment as showed the results of effusivity and conductivity. This accumulated material, analyzed by ICP-OES technique, showed that the stained shirt showed 99.7% more aluminum than the original shirt, which can be derived from contact with the deodorant that also has a high concentration of aluminum in its formulation. The methods used for removal showed satisfactory results, promoting the removal of staining tees, observed by decreasing the values of E * and indexes of Gray Scale Change Colors, instrumental colorimetric evaluation. However, the process of removal by chemical agents showed better results, about 70% efficiency when compared to the method of cleaning, may be a more effective method in removing this type of stain.

Estudo da dinâmica de lavadora de eixo vertical utilizando sistemas multicorpos / Dynamic study of a top loader washing machine using multibody system

Ioriatti, Adriano Salomão 28 June 2007 (has links)
Recently a paradigm shift has impacted the engineering and manufacturing in the way of planning, designing, testing and building products. The most traditional way of product development, characterized by multiple cycles of design-build-test, has been substituted by a process based on computational simulation, where the first physical prototypes are capable of delivering the desired performance. This new way of developing products is called simulation based design and allows organizations to reduce drastically the product lead time and bring innovation to the market. This work presents a computational way to analyze the dynamic behavior of a top load washing machine using multibody system (MBS). It\'s proposed a virtual prototype developed in the ADAMS software, for dynamic study of a commercial washing machine during spin cycle. The virtual model is compared to experimental data for validation. An extensive research in the literature has been done in order to find the most usual ways of modeling and analyzing washing machine dynamics during spin.

Requirements specification for PressCise : A study of the material mechanical properties of the No.14001 bandage

PEHRSSON, ANNA, LARSSON, SOFIA January 2014 (has links)
Varicose veins is a condition, which affects numerous people. The condition is mostly not harmful but aesthetically unappreciated. Therefore many people choose to have them surgically removed. After the surgery is completed, the leg is bandaged, this for creating an ideal healing environment, without any complications occurring. It is important that a uniform pressure is distributed evenly along the bandaged leg, because high or low pressure can cause complications which prolongs healing. During the bandaging it is difficult to achieve an even pressure since the pressure varies due to the shape of the leg and who is bandaging the leg. PressCise has developed a compression bandage with a guide along the bandage, so that each bandaging will give the same pressure upon the leg. The bandage is designed after a specific mathematical formula that is derived from the law of Laplace. This means that no matter how thick or thin the leg is at different points, the pressure will distribute itself evenly over the entire bandaged leg. PressCise aims to obtain a CE-mark for the product before a launch. An analysis of demands and a wide test study therefor needs to be carried out. Demands and requirements for the product from different laws and regulations have been observed in order to determine which tests are necessary to execute. At this stage PressCise also needs to evaluate different parameters. To begin with, they need to see how the bandage behaves in different types of treatments, and secondly they need to evaluate the properties in order to give the correct information concerning usage and durability advices. In this report, a survey of the competitors was conducted in order to estimate which standards and tests the competitors are marketing their products with. An examination of the requirements of the product from the PressCise, CE marking and laws will be study, to see which demands and regulations lies upon the bandage. In this report a minor test study will be executed, where the product will go through a washing test, an abrasion test and a hysteresis test. The report will conclude with a requirement specification for the current product and its launching. / Program: Textilingenjörsutbildningen
