The record keeping practices of women’s organizations : a case study of three organizations in Vancouver, British ColumbiaBuhlmann, Jana Patricia 05 1900 (has links)
Examination of the context of record creation, maintenance, and use is a
valuable tool which allows the archivist to build a body of knowledge regarding
archival records and their creators. Such knowledge enables the archivist to
make informed decisions in all realms of archival practice. This discussion
focuses upon the women's organization, undertaking a case study of three
organizations in Vancouver, British Columbia in order to provide information
about their record keeping practices.
The case study employs open-ended focus interviews, observation, and
document analysis, where provided. Participants are selected based upon their
involvement in the creation, maintenance, and use of records in their respective
organizations. They are asked to provide information as to the administrative
history of the organization and to describe the processes by which they receive,
create, use, organize, maintain, and destroy records. Participants are also
asked to characterize their organization and its record keeping practices as they
relate to the concept of a women's organization.
A framework for analysis is established, which allows for further
characterization of each women's organization. This framework addresses the
voluntary nature of most women's organizations, as well as their unique
processes and forms. Three models are presented which allow for further
characterization of the history, structure, and practices of each organization.
The distinctive internal processes, forms, and record keeping practices of the
Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the Western
Businesswomen's Association, and the West Coast Women's Legal Education
and Action Fund are presented. The thesis concludes by providing
recommendations regarding further explorations of record creation,
maintenance, and use and their value for the archival profession.

This dissertation analyses women’s sports in Quebec from 1919 to 1961 from the golden age of women’s sport in Canada to the adoption of the Fitness and Amateur Sport Act by the federal government. It shows how gender relations have been re/produced in women’s sport by studying discourses and practices, while also considering the influence of class, ethnicity, and religion on women’s sport. The analysis studies first the way doctors, physical education teachers, and the Catholic Church conceived women’s participation in sport. The ideas of two active participants in women’s sport organization in Montreal, namely Myrtle Cook and Cécile Grenier, are then analyzed in order to see how they contested dominant discourses. Finally, women’s sports played at the Palestre and Young Women’s Christian Association, two sport centers of Montreal, are detailed in order to show the differences, but also some similarities, in sport organization in the Francophone and Anglophone communities.
This dissertation highlights the tensions ensuing from gender, class, ethnicity, and religion, all of which were present in discourses and practices. As elsewhere in North America, and even in Occident, dominant discourses on women’s sport in Quebec were not homogeneous, as different points of view contested them, and practices were numerous and varied. While taking part in the larger movement of women’s access to sport in Occident, discourses and practice in Montreal had also their own particularities because of the Catholic Church influence and the ethnic tensions. The province of Quebec is thus an interesting case study to highlight the complexity of re/production of gender relations in women’s sport. Moreover, women’s sport is a greatly stimulating research avenue to better grasp the entry of the province in modernity.

Syriska Muslimska Brödraskapet, En genusresaBergh, Viveka January 2014 (has links)
The Syrian Muslim Brotherhood has since the start of the Syrian uprising in March 2011 moved from a low-key position in exile to become one of the main actors in the political opposition. There appears to be a consensus among researchers today on the democratic commitment of the Syrian Brotherhood. However, ambiguity remains regarding its commitment towards gender equality, women’s rights and participation. This essay focuses on the gender discourse of the Syrian Brotherhood’s leadership, according to its policy-documents, from 2004 – 2013. By applying a critical discourse analysis, a movement from a more Islamist, exclusionary discourse in 2004 towards a more inclusive, feminist inspired discourse in 2013 becomes apparent. Nonetheless, traditional gender roles linger and more Islamist and pan-Arab, pan-Islamic discourses are not distant features. The movement of the gender discourse towards greater inclusion confirms claims made by democratic theorists on inclusion and moderation.

An appraisal of the spirituality of Methodist women in post apartheid South AfricaPreston, Anne 31 December 2007 (has links)
This thesis will examine the issues of women's spirituality, suffering, their survival in the midst of suffering. These issues will be examined in the context of a post-apartheid South Africa within a Christian framework looking at issues of faith and spirituality. More particularly the Methodist church will be examined, looking at key aspects of its spirituality and how that might have contributed and provided for its women. Two of the Methodist Women's organisations, the Women's Manyano and the Women's Auxiliary will be looked at; their history and significant aspects of their programmes and structures that have led them to be important places for the women who are part of them. The thesis will seek to determine how the Methodist Women's organisations have impacted the spirituality of two women especially when they have gone through difficult times. The lives of these two women are examined through conversations the author has with them. In particular the author will examine particular circumstances of these women and seek to set them against a background of their spirituality and in particular whether their particular Methodist organisation played any role during this time. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Les services religieux féminins en Grèce de l’époque classique à l’époque impériale / Women’s religious functions from the classical era to the imperial periodDenis, Patricia 12 June 2009 (has links)
In ancient Greece, Thessaly, Aitolia, Epiros, Macedonia, Cyclads, Aegean’s Islands and the eastern coast of Asia Minor, citizen’s wives and daughters, stem from the élite, could carry out religious functions for their people. These functions, influenced by the evolution of the society and observed from the 5th BC to the 2nd/3rd AD, were an opportunity for women to act in the public field, according to their social status, and a way to increase the value of their relatives. Many of these offices were determined by the gender and included in a women’s world. They played a part to create a greek ideal of woman, and the initiatory rites performed by their daughters contributed to carry on this image. However, all the women’s religious functions were not in this women’s world but all formed a group in which they are closely related to each other. The priestess got the most prestigious office but the others functions, usually named by a specific term which indicate its most important sight, were not just only sub-offices. All these offices were part of a complex group with some diversity and fine distinctions and it’s not easy to understand each function and its prerogatives, but this group was still homogeneous and coherent.

This essay explores how Swedish men’s and women’s aidsconstructs gender in relation to victim-and offender roles when it comes to intimate partner violence. This has been done using botha quantitative andaqualitative content analysis ofsixteen Swedish men’s and women’s aids websites. The reason why there haveonlybeen eightwebsitesper aid is that therearen’t more men’s aids websites to perform an analysis on. Twoquestions havebeen the basis for the essay:(1) Do the aids primarily talk about the women as victims and the men asoffenders, and if that is the case –why?(2) Isthere a difference between how men’sand women’s aidsconstruct women and men as victims and offenders and if so, why?The essay is based on the debate about asymmetry and symmetry, as well as social constructionism, gender and the ideal victim. The results showthat the men’sand women’s aidsare assuming anasymmetric perspective, whichmeans that the man is primarily seen as the offender and the woman primarily as the victim.Women’s aidsare targetingwomen who havebeen victims of intimate partner violenceand they are constructing men and women as opposites –guilty andinnocent. Men’s aidswere more neutral in this regard. They didn’t focus onthe relationshipbetween the victim and the offender, but rather onsupport forthe men who useviolence against their partners. Men who are the victims of intimate partner violence are forgotten.

"Kvinnorna påstås ha blivit mer våldsamma och mer tjuvaktiga" : en kvalitativ studie gällande medias konstruktion av kvinnlig brottslighetHallén, Emelie, Karlsson, Linda January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the structures of female crime in the media. The main issues were the constructions made by the media regarding female crime and how these structures can be understood from a gender perspective. Thesis empirical material consists of a selection of ten articles from the newspaper Dagens Nyheter from the period September to November 2015. The study can not be said to give an overall picture of the Swedish media, instead it is the researcher's interpretation outlined, which is one of the interpretations can be made. Thesis theoretical approach has been from a social gender perspective meaning that gender can be seen as something socially constructed and that the notion of female crime is attributed to a certain meaning. While theories about media and its power to construct female crime is also used as a theoretical basis. Overall, the paper deals with two different areas; constructions of women as criminal and constructions of women as victims. The results showed that there is a construction of female crime in the media. This design is very fragmented, that means that female crime is produced from a stereotypical image or antisocial image. The results have shown that the construction is done by the woman's crime in the media that is the basis of the media who has the power to choose what to publish and how it is described with words and phrases.
