A History of Intercollegiate Wrestling at Utah State University

McCrary, Delwin W. 01 May 1967 (has links)
This study presents a historical account of intercollegiate wrestling at Utah State University, from its introduction into the athletic program in 1921 until the school year of 1966. Data were gathered by use of historical research methods and personal interviews. The intercollegiate wrestling program at Utah State University has shown steady growth and development since its introduction in 1922. The primary motivating force behind the wrestling program was George "Doc" Nelson. The expanding of all phases of collegiate athletics has necessitated a more complex program. Wrestling at U.S.U. has followed this national trend in program development and has in the past two years gained national recognition.

An Examination of Relative Age Effects Among Junior Elite Wrestlers

Kelly, Jayla 01 May 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this examination was to evaluate relative age effects among junior elite wrestlers across gender, weight class, and competitive rule sets. Using biographical data, this thesis explores trends representing an oversampling of athletes born earlier in the year, accompanied by potential effects for success in sport and an impact on retention rates. Currently, the use of chronological age is the most common form of classifying sports participants, though this type of classification may have potentially negative long- and short-term implications. Thus, the results may provide an evaluation of weight categorization as a less discriminatory competitive format in junior elite wrestlers.

La lutte senegalaise : contribution au developpement des competences en éducation physique et sportive / The senegalese wrestling : contribution to the development of skills in physical education and sports

Wane, Cheikh Tidiane 03 February 2012 (has links)
The Senegalese Wrestling known as "Lamb" is both a sport and an art. It is also as ubiquitous as a huge phenomenon in Senegal. It is practiced in almost all ethnic groups during well-defined periods and also during some specific events. This fight is now part of the process of moving from games to sports like the phenomenon of sportization traditional games, and despite its anchoring into the Senegalese beliefs and imagination, linked to the world of beliefs and superstitions. Nevertheless, it is not taught in schools. In this thesis we try to determine, establish and evaluate within the constraints of the EPS in Senegal, an educational content of this activity as it is considered to some as the sport "king." In other words, what form of school practice in the Senegalese wrestling can be proposed to students considering a share of the constraints of the EPS and also the social and cultural significance of this kind of wrestling? And what are the skills to develop? As part of a modeling of a form of wrestling “with touch” in school, we mobilize the anthropo-techno-didactic approach for the study of practices of wrestling in Senegal and to account for the functioning and the effects of the transmission and the appropriation of a form of wrestling in school. Linking inputs the anthropological, technological and educational contributions, builds a form of practice appropriate and meaningful. The results show that the integration of cultural practices and rituals relating to the activity and the identification and consideration of the difficulties of students and teachers related to the reality of combat proved decisive in the construction of content. Thus, for effective and meaningful teaching, teachers must start from the already-there bases, students' initial representations and from the specific knowledge of fighting not to forget the cultural and symbolic of such wrestling.

Středověký válečník v boji - Moderní mýtus a historická realita / The Medieval Warrior in Combat - Modern Myth and Historical Reality

Šlapák, Vojtěch January 2016 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive view of the combat skills and competencies of the European medieval warrior, using both written and archaeological sources and modern research of the recent years. The main reason for the choice of this theme is the general ignorance of the warrior past of our ancestors and especially the underestimation of European medieval fighting as something crude, non-technical and barbaric. This thesis attempts to refute such myths, among other through the comparison of 13th century fencing and Renaissance martial arts. Key words: Combat - Middle Age - Fencing- Swordplay - Wrestling - I.33 - European martial arts

Hellman, Hugo, Stillwell, Kevin January 2017 (has links)
The Swedish Wrestling Association are in the process of constructing a new Elite Development Plan which will include the fields: Elite Sports Environment, Coaching Development, Performance Development, Performance Analysis and Research Development. This study will aim to produce knowledge in the field Performance Development. The study analyzes elite wrestlers from the Swedish National Wrestling Team views on how to develop their performance and what factors are most significant. To answer the purpose of the study the Swedish Wrestling Association helped us conduct interviews with eight different wrestlers whom all had different backgrounds. The result showed that there are several important factors that have a significant impact on their performance development, which include training facilities, setting clear short and long-term goals and having support from their surroundings. A short conclusion of the study is that the Swedish wrestlers all have the physical ability to compete on a high international level, however, that they lack in the mental ability which disables them to take the next step in their development. Our hope with this study is that it will lay a foundation for the Swedish Wrestling Association and their future Elite Development Plan.

Vad lockar vuxna individer att delta i Wresfit? : En kvantitativ studie av motivationsfaktorer och hinders påverkan på deltagandet i träningsformen / What attracts adult individuals to participate in Wresfit? : A quantitative study of how motivational factors and barriers affect participation in training

Jansson, Anton, Åkerblad, Thomas January 2020 (has links)
This quantitative study has been done in cooperation with the Swedish Wrestling Association within the research field of sport science. The sports movement in Sweden wants to get more individuals physically active and the Wrestling Association wants to be a part of this by introducing a new training form, called Wresfit. A form of physical training aimed at exercisers, old wrestlers, exercise wrestlers, sports teams, and people who have never before been in contact with neither wrestling or any other sport for that matter. In short, for anyone who wants to try a challenging form of training. The purpose of the study was to investigate what motivates and how barriers influences adult individuals to participate in Wresfit and to describe and compare patterns in participants' responses. To explain this, a psychological theory called Self-Determination theory was used, which is a simplification of reality to investigate people's motivation. Data was collected with the help of a web survey (n=95) among 25 different wrestling clubs in Sweden. The result showed some motivating factors that motivate adult individuals more than others. The highest-rated motivation factors were for the sake of strength, for joy, for the community, and good instructors. The results also show that there are some differences between people with and people without earlier wrestling background. Participants consider that barriers to not participating in the training form are that there is a lack of time, injury problems, laziness, and prejudice against the wrestling. The study's results conclude that in the responses, there were a lot of interesting explanations about problems and measures that the business should change to attract more people without previous wrestling experience.

Martial arts of medieval west : how was write and passed gestual knowledge at the end of Middle Ages.

Chaize, Pierre-Alexandre 30 September 2016 (has links)
If the issue of violence at the end of the medieval era was amply treated by historians, the techniques of that violence have not benefited from the same attention. If we know that the warriors fight, we do not know specifically how they fight, and especially how they transmit this knowledge. But martial arts, their exercise and education seem to be a reality in the Europe of the late Middle Ages. Since roaming fencing masters of the imperial space down to princes preparing a possible judicial duel, it's a whole section of the medieval gestures and body culture that this work seeks to explore.Through the analysis of a corpus of manuscripts, exclusively dedicated to the description of gestures and fighting techniques of the XVth and XVIth centuries, this study proposes to address the issue of martial arts from different angles. First, the establishment of a comprehensive catalog will show the reality of these documents. Through a quantitative analysis of the latter, the reader could then observe how this set of manuscripts builds, spreads and goes out gradually during the XVIth century. Through these groups of texts, the notion of cultural and martial tradition will be discussed in order to show the reader that these works are sometimes much more than technical abstracts. Finally, a presentation of the material and social environment in which these martial arts are practiced will allow a breakthrough in the place of these martial cultures in the history of the body and gesture to the late Middle Ages.
