Good governance in the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD): a public administration perspectiveMaserumule, M. H. (Mashupye Herbet) January 2011 (has links)
The object of this study is good governance, the context for its consideration is the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), and the disciplinary perspective from which it is considered is Public Administration. Good governance is a conceptual problematique. It is multi-dimensional, value-laden, trans-contextual and nebulous. The question of what good governance means is a subject of contestation. Good governance is used in NEPAD as a principle without the attempt to clarify its meaning at the conceptual level. Much of the existing body of scholarship on NEPAD also considers good governance largely as a principle rather than a concept. This erroneously presupposes unanimity on its meaning. The African leadership is divided on what good governance means in the context of NEPAD. In this regard scholarship largely fails to provide an intellectual solution.
The extent of complexity of the concept in the study lies in the fact that the context of its consideration [NEPAD] is itself a subject of contestation whereas the disciplinary perspective [Public Administration] from which it is considered has not yet reached a consensus with itself about its theoretical base. Against this background the question that the study asks is, what does the concept good governance in the context of NEPAD mean for Public Administration? The study examines this question to make a contribution towards a better insight into, and broadening of, the body of scientific knowledge by engaging in conceptual, theoretical and philosophical studies to understand good governance in the context of NEPAD and determine its meaning for Public Administration.
The study finds that the paradigm of engagement in the existing body of literature is framed in the binary logic, which is rooted in realist epistemology or positivism. This approach to scientific discourse is limited in dealing with complex conceptual, theoretical and philosophical questions. The study develops, as a contribution to science, an alternative epistemological framework from which good governance in the context of NEPAD could be understood. Such epistemological framework is, for the purpose of this study, termed the contingent co-existence of opposites. Esta dissertação propõe-se a analisar possíveis interfaces entre a Arquitetura e a Escultura, abordando suas produções realizadas a partir da segunda metade do século XX, período que se caracterizou pelo rompimento de inúmeros paradigmas teóricos e conceituais. Considerando essas manifestações a partir de suas naturezas tridimensionais, busca-se, segundo um enfoque transdisciplinar, apurar significados e novos parâmetros de análise compartilhados por ambas expressões, num processo recíproco de influências conceituais e práticas. A pesquisa divide-se em duas partes. Na primeira delas - Conceitos Tridimensionais - são estudados os fatos históricos e os conceitos filosóficos que influenciaram as concepções teóricas das produções da arquitetura e da escultura desse período. Nesta parte também são estudadas algumas transformações específicas dos universos dessas manifestações, consideradas determinantes para a constituição das obras posteriormente destacadas. Na segunda parte - Processos Tridimensionais - é realizada a leitura de algumas obras arquitetônicas e escultóricas fundamentadas sobre novas organizações produtivas estabelecidas no período estudado. Partindo do repertório transdisciplinar apresentado na primeira parte sobre os conceitos criativos de ambas as manifestações, são definidos parâmetros de análise que abrangem temas fundamentais das interfaces mencionadas. Os conceitos de Paisagem, Tempo, Estrutura, Matéria e Forma são estendidos em definições que conduzem a leitura de cada uma das obras selecionadas. Com isso, são estabelecidos novos conceitos cognitivos dessas construções, demonstrando como se influenciam mutuamente, compartilhando ou não suas intenções. Também é revelado o potencial advindo da proximidade entre Arquitetura e Escultura, oferecendo referenciais teóricos e práticos para que possam ser explorados em futuras produções. The development of a new identity through the process of bereavement counselling : a qualitative study.Bukman, Marie-Jeanne 01 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore how narrative therapy may facilitate not only a lessening of distressing symptoms for bereaved persons, but may also facilitate growth in identity. Five case studies are presented. The participants were chosen to illuminate different grief experiences. The case studies include a description of grieving people from different backgrounds, each with a unique relationship with the person or people who died, all of whom had different causes of death such as suicide, murder and natural causes. These differences provide an opportunity to explore the application of the therapy model with a range of grief experiences.
A full and rich description of the experiences of the participants yield insight into the shared themes such as the impact of social expectations of how a grieving person should conduct him or herself, difficult physical and emotional experiences, the many losses flowing from the death, as well as an in-depth discussion of the identity growth that takes place as the bereaved person takes on different roles and tasks.
Postmodern epistemology and social constructivism informed the praxis and interpretation of narrative therapy as bereavement model. Narrative therapy is shown as especially effective for grief therapy with therapeutic tenets such as deconstructing and creating richer narratives and alternative stories that enables the bereaved to explore diverse aspects of their character. The emphasis on what remains rather than what is lost, and the concept of remembering the loved one who died in the community of those who stay behind, transmute the loss-story to one of remembering and incorporating, which tends to bring significant emotional relief.
This study contributes towards the field of growth through bereavement for which there seems to be a paucity in research. Furthermore, it provides additional evidence for post-traumatic growth in general, especially with the assistance of narrative therapy. / Psychology / Ph. D. (Psychology)

Ecofeminism perceives an interconnection between the domination of women and poor people, and the domination of nature. This domination is founded on modern, Western, patriarchal, dualised structures, which subordinate all considered as "the other" compared to the superior masculine archetype. Hence, all feminine is seen as inferior and may therefore be exploited. This is presently manifested in the neo-liberal economic development ideal. Its global penetration generates huge economic profits, which are reaped by Northern and Southern elites, while its devastating crises of poverty, violence, environmental destruction, and human rights abuses makes life increasingly unmanageable for Southern women, poor people and nature. Feminism and ecology have therefore come together aiming at liberating women, poor people and nature. They want to change the dualised, reductionist perception of reality into a holistic cosmology. people.
This means that the person who studies or practices participatory development
or any other of the participatory pratices should have a particular way of thinking
about people. The main aim motivating this study was to investigate the
paradigm/s about people on which participatory practices are based. This
included a literature research on five participatory practices namely
participatory development;
participatory communication;
participatory learning;
participatory research; and
participatory management.
A guideline for paradigm analysis was developed by using Schriver's (1995) and
Capra's (1996) descriptions of a paradigm as well as ideas of hermeneutics.
From the paradigm analysis on the participatory practices two themes emerged:
A shift from modernism to post modernism in the thinking processes and
participatory practices.
From the participatory practices the same concepts repeatedly emerged
indicating a similar paradigm for all the participatory practices.
Three post modern theories were therefore applied to enhance the description
of the different concepts. The end result of this study is the development of an
evolving paradigm for participatory practices in order to give enhanced meaning
to concepts in the participatory vocabulary.
