Delaktighet ur ett elevperspektiv : Kooperativt lärande på mellanstadiet / Participation from a student perspective : Cooperative Learning in Elementary school

Gille, Sofia January 2024 (has links)
This qualitative study examines, by analyzing 30 transcribed interviews, participation in Elementary school from a student perspective, and in teaching characterized by Cooperative Learning. Student participation is a goal in the Swedish curriculum and is seen as essential for fulfilling learning outcomes, and research shows that students’ participation is limited and strictly controlled by the teachers. The study concerns itself with three dimensions of participation: the social dimension, the political and the epistemological dimension. The analysis highlights different aspects of participation which are all important to the students. The aspects of social participation concern safety, respect, and responsibility within the social community. Continuity within the cooperating groups seems to be a prerequisite for these aspects, as they are all built up over time. The political aspects of participation that emerge from analyzing the interviews revolve around questions of influence in the form of co-determination, self-determination, and leadership. Although these aspects all seem to be of importance to the students, they are not specifically prioritized in Cooperative Learning within the studied schools. Epistemological participation is made visible in the analysis of the data through the descriptions of students’ willingness to learn, and curiosity about the new and previously unknown. The students’ statements are characterized by a desire to experience meaning in their schoolwork, by among other things understanding the benefits and future use of the knowledge they are supposed to develop. When the groups are exposed to stressful situations, like when their work is to be assessed, it appears to hinder epistemological aspects of participation. The results show that there are opportunities for all three dimensions of participation to occur within cooperative learning, but there are also challenges. The students’ pursuit of efficiency in work, constitutes an obstacle to their ability to participate, which should have otherwise been made possible by Cooperative Learning. Students also need to have the opportunity to express their opinions about the teaching in their classroom, as well as to be able to have an impact on their future lesson plans. This includes allowing students to take part in conversations about the purpose of school, both in the long term, and in relation to current projects. Since education is multidimensional, it is important to work for a greater representativity for all societal groups, and especially for those who the education concerns, the students, as a way to make the discussion more multidimensional. This, in turn, can contribute to making students’ social, political, and epistemological participation possible at a larger extent than what is seen in today’s schools.

The Politics of Emigration in Europe: A Research Agenda

Kyriazi, Anna, Mendes, Mariana S., Rone, Julia, Weisskircher, Manès 30 May 2024 (has links)
While the politics of immigration in destination countries has been a prominent topic of research in comparative political science in Europe, the same does not apply to emigration and to the perspective of peripherical EU countries. This is true even though the flows of people moving from east to west and from south to north pose potentially significant challenges to ‘sending countries’ in Europe. This article sets up a research agenda aimed at contributing to redress this imbalance. It highlights the need to explore more systematically themes such as (1) the impact of emigration on the political behaviour of both those who stay and those who leave and (2) and how emigration is framed and politicized by relevant societal actors. Ultimately, it draws attention to the fact that a lot of the questions that have been asked about ‘entry’ (immigration) need to be asked about ‘exit’ too (emigration).

The roots of civic apathy in local government

Mokgwatsana, Edwin Ntwampe 11 1900 (has links)
The dissertation deals with the roots of civic apathy in local government, and the main emphasis is to establish the root cause/s of civic apathy. The hypothesis: 'civic apathy is a phenomenon intensified by ignorance and a feeling of powerlessness and frustration on the electorate' is tested in this study. To examine further specific aspects of civic apathy, including establishing the cause/s and effects of apathy, the author conducted a quantitative research in the Northern Metropolitan Area m Johannesburg, using questionnaires and literature study as the research method. The hypothesis advanced in the dissertation has been validated insofar as it has been argued and demonstrated that indeed people can feel powerless and frustrated if they are deliberately being excluded from, or denied the opportunity to participate actively in their local government activities. The main finding is that civic apathy is intensified by ignorance. However, the most important finding is that there ts a causal relationship between powerlessness, frustration and apathy. / Public Administration and Management / M. Admin. (Public Administration)

Since Global Fund claimed for expanding public participation in civil society, in the April of 2006 NGOs made allies to launch a movement against the election organized by CCM Secretariat, requiring adding the right of participation and improving election procedures. With qualitative research method, this paper analyzes the reason, process and result including interactions and strategies among participants of this advocacy movement organized by NGOs, providing evidence-based study for employment and adaptation of the social movement theory in China; and makes suggestions for NGOs to expand organization development and political participation in the context of China. / This study adopts mobilization structure and political opportunity structure in the theory of social movement as core theoretical framework based on reviewing the background and status quo of AIDS issue in China, the theory and relevant studies of social movement as well as studies on China contentious politics. Findings are as follows: / 1.Umbrella organizations, which are of less emphasis in the western studies of social movement, play a key role in CCM election movement mobilization. It increases organizers’ overall strength and legitimacy and shows a multi-level structure. / 2.CCM election movement allies haven't yet achieved being temporary, proper institutionalized and decentralized, and are converting into ideal external mobilization structure, demonstrating integration among NGOs allies and multi-level umbrella organizations at present. / 3.There exists living space for advocacy movements in the context of political environment in China. Organizers are able to detect, interpret, extend political opportunity via exertion of strategies, especially taking advantage of international factor, and, consequently, push the movement forward successfully / 4.Four components of political opportunity structure are not equally important. Under the circumstance that the state remains its ability of repression, political elite allies play a more leading role than the access to participation and the stability of ruling alignments and influence profoundly on both process and result of the movement. / This paper delineates the mobilization structure of CCM election movement as well as the disadvantages and advantages of organizers, when they were holding political opportunities and taking advantages of them.

Amjahad, Anissa 13 September 2013 (has links)
