An Examination of Processes based on Open Standards in Support of Service Location

Cheresna, Mark January 2013 (has links)
A private telecom carrier partnered with the University of Waterloo to examine opportunities to improve their asset management processes. A reliance on traditional CAD technology made it difficult to generate an enterprise view of operational assets, such as poles and cables, since CAD documents were limited to neighbourhood scale coverage. The CAD documents had to communicate logical and locational properties of these assets. These requirements were often at odds since the elements in these CAD documents were occasionally moved to clarify logical aspects, the most common being connectivity with other telecommunications hardware. Elements within the drawings were also restricted to two dimensions, a legacy of early adoption of CAD technology within the telecom carrier. Developments in GIS and architectural technology that have occurred since the introduction of CAD offer opportunities to manage assets using enterprise geospatial systems with three dimensional content. Prominent technologies and standards, such as CityGML and Oracle, will be examined to develop a model to support requirements related to service location. A service location for this paper is a site that requires the deployment of specific resources to meet the needs of a service request. Additionally, as location displacement is an issue that needs to be addressed, an evaluation of data quality processes related to location will be presented. The results from this evaluation will then be used to construct a final standards based 3D geospatial service location model, one that should address the needs of the partner carrier.

Extending Building Information Modeling (BIM) interoperability to geo-spatial domain using semantic web technology

Parvaresh Karan, Ebrahim 10 March 2015 (has links)
As Building Information Modeling (BIM) applications become more sophisticated and used within other knowledge domains, the limitations of existing data exchange and sharing methods become apparent. The integration of BIM and Geographic Information System (GIS) can offer substantial benefits to manage the planning process during the design and construction stages. Currently, building (and geospatial) data are shared between BIM software tools through a common data format, such as Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). Because of the diversity and complexity of domain knowledge across BIM and GIS systems, however, these syntactic approaches are not capable of overcoming semantic heterogeneity. This study uses semantic web technology to ensure the highest level of interoperability between existing BIM and GIS tools. The proposed approach is composed of three main steps; ontology construction, semantic integration through interoperable data formats and standards, and query of heterogeneous information sources. Because no application ontology is available to encompass all IFC classes with different attributes, we first develop an IFC-compliant ontology describing the hierarchy structure of BIM objects. Then, we can translate the building's elements and GIS data into semantic web standard formats. Once the information has been gathered from different sources and transformed into an appropriate semantic web format, the SPARQL query language is used in the last step to retrieve this information from a dataset. The completeness of the methodology is validated through a case study and two use case examples.

BIM vid installationsprojektering / Planning HVAC systems using BIM

Louise, Kollberg January 2009 (has links)
Planet rendering plays an important role in universe visualization and geographic visualization. The recent tools and methods allow better data acquisition, usually with very high resolution. However in computer graphics, there is always the limitation on the resolution of geometry and texture due to numerical imprecision. Not many applications can handle high resolution data effectively. This thesis introduces, Implicit Surface Scene, a level of detail scene management inspired by dynamic coordinate system and SCALEGRAPH™ which change over time depending on the current camera position relative to the planet surface. Our method is integrated into Uniview and allows Uniview to render high resolution planet geometry with dynamic texture composition and with a surface positioning system that does not suffer from precision issue.

Currently, the use of smart computer systems focused on integrated practice, from the design phase to the implementation and maintenance of an architectural project, become a great difference in the organizational environment. Thus, BIM (Building Information Modeling), is a set of information generated and maintained during the entire life cycle of a building. This research aims to analyze the impacts of BIM systems, such as Revit and Navisworks, and MS Project software, to building planning. The Revit BIM software will be used to perform 3D modeling of the chosen project and with the quantitative materials generated by the program we performed a study of costs of the main activities of the project under study. In Ms Project will be created to Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Then, the data obtained by the programs will be incorporated into Navisworks system, in order to generate the 4D planning (graphic elements of the building can be linked to the work schedule) and 5D (adds the dimension cost three-dimensional model) the building. It is vital to incorporate new technologies in the construction process, as well as the BIM systems capable of contributing significantly to reducing costs and improving the quality and productivity of enterprises and the construction industry as a whole. Thus, with this study will evaluate the important contribution of BIM systems in relation to the planning of the constructions.

[en] EVALUATING THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN BIM, LEAN AND SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPTS IN BUILDING DESIGN / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO DO INTER-RELACIONAMENTO ENTRE OS CONCEITOS BIM, LEAN E SUSTENTABILIDADE EM PROJETOS DE EDIFICAÇÕES

PEDRO SAIEG FARIA 25 April 2018 (has links)
[en] The main purpose of this study was to evaluate and validate how Building Information Modeling functionalities could interact with lean construction principles to support sustainable development in building design and deliver higher quality projects. To that end, first a brief introduction to each of these concepts was introduced, followed by an extensive and structured literature research looking for pairwise combination of these topics. The results of this review generated a matrix that brought up interactions, which were highlighted and explained. To further validate some of these interrelationships, a plug-in was proposed and implemented on a BIM enabled visualization environment to help the user decide the best design between alternatives, while considering his perspective on what generates value to the project. To illustrate and validate the usability and importance of the plug-in, the design of a warehouse with certain requirements was considered. Four design alternatives were modelled considering different types of superstructures along with the building envelope and varied types of materials. These models were exported as IFC files and then imported to the BIM environment. The plug-in then imported an external database and calculated general costs, CO2 emissions and thermal comfort indicators for each model based on data contained on elements and the imported database. Finally, it considered user weightings on each indicator and graphically displayed results indicating which of the options would be the best through a Multiple Attribute Decision Method. Even though the used models were hypothetical and more indicators would be required for more robust results, it was possible to verify that automated analysis considering indicators can optimize decision making tasks that otherwise would be inefficient and innacurate. This way, some of the perceived interactions were validated and the importance of integrating these concepts was confirmed.

[en] EMPIRICAL STUDY TO PROPOSE GUIDELINES FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF BIM IN SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISES IN BRAZIL / [pt] ESTUDO EMPÍRICO PARA PROPOSTA DE DIRETRIZES PARA IMPLANTAÇÃO DO BIM EM PEQUENAS E MÉDIAS EMPRESAS NO BRASIL

JOAO FELIPE LEMGRUBER COELHO 18 September 2017 (has links)
[en] Although the use of information technologies in construction is highly relevant for increasing productivity seeking sustainable development, the literature lacks clear guidelines for its implementation. The purpose of this study is to identify barriers and benefits to propose a set of guidelines for implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in Brazil. The study protocol is qualitative and quantitative, containing the stages of systematic literature review, empirical studies, guidelines proposal, validation and conclusion. Evidence in the literature points to barriers in technologies, involving frequently cited software limitations and lack of interoperability. Lack of collaboration and different expectations between disciplines involved in the work flow were also identified. Above all, lack of knowledge, resistance to change, and team turnover affects the implementation of BIM. After comparing the observations from empirical studies and the literature, analyzing barriers and benefits, guidelines are proposed that involve process, technology, and people to guide the implementation of BIM. Finally a survey is used to validate the findings.

BIM-projektering med fokus på tidplanering - 4D projektering med Vico Office från Peabs projekt Bottenhavet / BIM-planning with focus on scheduling

Löfgren, Jakob January 2015 (has links)
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a relatively new method of working in the construction industry that more and more companies embrace in various projects. With the help of BIM project work efficiency can be increased at an early stage. For example, I can perform collision checks in the created 3D models of the various players already in the planning phase, this can help avoiding problems when the construction work has started. BIM process consists of three parts. They are called 3D, 4D and 5D and include 3D visualization, scheduling and costing. In this report the focus is mostly on time planning phase to provide a picture of how the work could be better if the BIM was used to planning and its obstacles in the development of the use of BIM. To get an idea of how the planning was carried out as a comparison of the Gantt planning and Flowline planning was made. Where a Flowline plan was established from an existing Gantt planning , then to see how the methods are different from each other.
