Analysis of the Social Media of the Obama and Romney Campaigns in the 2012 ElectionBuratti, Brenda 29 September 2014 (has links)
This study is a quantitative content analysis of the Facebook and Twitter communication of the Obama and Romney campaigns on seven dates within the 30 days prior to the 2012 presidential election. Specific rhetorical techniques are explored for similarities or differences in how these techniques have appeared in political communication in legacy media and how they are expressed in social media. Repetition, collective language, self-reference language and Benoit's functions of attack, acclaim and defend are examined. Additionally, the study identified what topics each candidate emphasized in their social media communication. Findings show that both candidates used repetition to reinforce key messages. The use of attacks, acclaims and defenses bore some similarities to uses in legacy media. However, the primary focuses by both candidates centered on motivating citizens to show support for the candidate and get out the vote. Few policy issues appeared in the communication of either candidate. / 2015-09-29

Your Friends Like Our Brand: Social Impact, Capital, and Connections in Social Media AdvertisingTefertiller, Alec 10 April 2018 (has links)
Social media networks such as Facebook enable advertisers to embed social connection information within advertisements. The purpose of this study was to better understand how social cues in social media advertising contribute to consumers’ brand attitudes and purchase intentions. Two theoretical constructs guided the study: social impact theory and social capital theory. Social impact theory suggests that the number, relational strength, and immediacy of individuals exerting social influence determine its effectiveness. Social capital theory posits that our social networks are a product of the relational capital we have invested in them, with two forms of social capital: bonding and bridging. Bonding is associated with our intimate, "strong ties," and bridging is associated with our larger circle of acquaintances, or "weak ties." Using an experiment (N = 211), it was determined that while social context cues included in social media advertisements did influence brand attitudes, the strength and intensity of cues did not have an effect. Furthermore, bridging, strong-tie social capital positively moderated the relation between advertisement attitude and social media sharing of the advertisement as well as the relation between brand attitude and purchase intentions.

Previous issue date: 2013-07-26 / The present study aims to understand the relationship among ways of using Facebook by members of the Online Journal XYZ and meaning of organizational symbols. In order to speak out on symbolic interactionism, interpretivism and organizational symbolism were consulted previous studies reported by Blumer (1969), Burrell and Morgan (1979), Morgan, Frost and Pondy (1983), Gioia (1986), Turner (1990), Maines (1977), Mendoza (2002), and Marchiori (2009. Furthermore, the work of Carvalho (2010) was usefull to understand the relationship between social interaction and communication, and studies of Ellison et al (2006), Ellison et al (2007), Boyd and Ellison (2007), Ellison, Steinfield and Lampe (2007), Dwyer et al (2006), Nadkarni and Hofmann (2012), as well as Golder et al (2007) to analyze the uses of Facebook. The qualitative method guided the empirical approach and the data collection was conducted through scientific literature, review of documents, netnography and semistructured interviews. Interview data processing was done through content analysis (Bardin, 2002), the thematic (MINAYO, 1999). After analysis, it was observed that Facebook is a channel of symbolic exchanges among individuals in the organization, however, in this media these exchanges are veiled. There is a shared understanding that facebook is a place of large exposure and therefore, people are afraid of posting personal information on the work or because they believe are being watched. In this context, other online social networks were identified as a vehicle for the exchange of symbolic content / A presente dissertação tem o objetivo de compreender as relações entre os usos do Facebook pelos membros do Jornal Online XYZ e a interpretação dos símbolos organizacionais.

In an age of ever-expanding digital communication platforms and the presence of news online becoming paramount, the amount of information being shared and the truth of that information is becoming more and more difficult to track. The power of these social platforms is one that all should recognize and reflect upon in terms of their use of them, and reliance on them for the information they need. This thesis seeks to explore this power and the ways in which to remedy the falsities spread on the platforms faster than ever before, through photographic journalism.

Are We Worse Off With The Internet? An Analysis of Social MediaKnighton, Krista 01 January 2018 (has links)
n the following thesis, I will begin by giving a more detailed background on the prevalence of internet and social media use. Then I will provide information on depression and declining mental health rates in the United States. Following this, I will discuss previous studies that have come to a variety of conclusions about the interaction of these two factors, including some theoretical frameworks that are useful when thinking about this subject matter. I will then describe the methods used for my analysis, which will be followed by a presentation of the variables, results, and analysis. I find that Instagram is a significant determinant of lower perceived social status, and that Snapchat is a significant determinant of poorer mental health.

The Use of Facebook by Georgian Queer Activists: Compromised Empowerment and New ChallengesKavtaradze, Lasha January 2018 (has links)
In Georgia, a country with a post-soviet past and a long path of geopolitical struggles that is transitioning into a liberal democracy, queer people remain as one of the most oppressed groups of the society. Despite the hostile environment, there are several openly queer activists who fight against the oppression on a daily basis. One of the battlegrounds for those fights has become Facebook, the social networking site that created another space for informational exchange and meaning construction during the interaction. The purpose of this research is to explore the use of Facebook by Georgian queer activists for their individual and community empowerment. The study deals with the concept of empowerment as the primary theoretical framework from the perspective of community phycology. With the help of a one-month netnographic observation of 10 queer activists on Facebook and interviews conducted with them, the study demonstrates the sense of empowerment that queer activists obtain through their use of Facebook. According to the activists’ accounts, Facebook increased possibilities for them to receive more information more easily and quickly, to express their opinions, negotiate their identities, engage in acts of resistance, organize the community and mobilize community members and their supporters. However, the use of Facebook is not a singlehanded process, as it has created new challenges that activists have to deal with, along with the fellow community members. Some of those challenges include increased cyberbullying, “slacktivism” (Morozov, 2011), issues of digital security and better-organized hate groups. The research adopts a phenomenological approach to explore the self-perceptions of the queer activists’ experiences, and it creates a basis for further research about studying the actual effects of Facebook on queer resistance in Georgia.

January 2018 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This research aims to analyze the stablished dialogical relations between the I and the other, that can be occupied by different subjects from the space of saying that they occupy on the page, these relations happen through the interaction with the quotes of songs and literature, which we call cultural products, these made in Facebook posts; on a specific page called "Brasileiríssimos". The page is considered and claims to be a project that intents to publicize Brazilian culture, according to its own concept of what that is. There is a contractual relation between the page and its followers, given that the interactions about the quoted discourses are majorly positive. During the analysis, we were able to identify the dialogical relation between subjects that unfold from the quoted discourses and the comments that place each one of the subjects in a positive stance in relation to the content. Dialogy is a confrontation of intonations and value systems, which place the most varied visions about the world in a given position. Furthermore, engaging in a dialog means to listen to, respond to, and, on this page, agree with. Additionally, it is possible to learn, from the analysis, that the posts work beyond any set of rules or formal procedures, considering that the quotes cover the textual construction of meanings, the dialogical dimension of language and comprise the enunciative positions displayed by the page. Precisely because it is a space with unique singularities, the place of speech on Facebook is delimited, consisting of specific areas for the posts, the comments and the responses to the comments. Taking that into account, the I and the other could be, respectively: the follower and the page; the follower and the quoted discourse; the follower and other followers, and so on...
Enkätundersökningen resulterade i 74 respondenter.
