Light used as metaphor in the prologue of the Fourth Gospel: the influence of this metaphor on the Maronite 'Prayer of the Faithful'

In this dissertation, the affinities between the Prologue of the Fourth Gospel and the Maronite Prayer of the Faithful especially the use of light metaphor are examined and new hypothetic proposals are suggested: the former has influenced the latter; both of them might have shared the same milieu or have been influenced by an existent Antiochene liturgical hymn. These proposals are discussed according to reflections on the Fourth Gospel, the Antiochene Syriac Maronite Church, the light metaphor, the work done on the Prologue from a socio-rhetorical perspective and the study conducted on the first English edition of the Maronite Prayer of the Faithful. / New Testament / M.Th. In the thesis a methodology of understanding and explicating Christian faith consistent with the mystery of the simultaneous close connection and radical difference of God, human beings and the physical-organic cosmos environment is been mapped out. The theanthropocosmic principle as an expression of the mystery functions as the heuristic key in opening up the notion of kenosis (and incarnation) of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit within the scope of the enduring interaction of . The Spirit in the kenotic sense of the word connects and differentiates the overall processes of being and becoming, here and there, now and then of the mystery of the `presences' of God, human beings and the natural cosmic world in being there (Dasein), being thus and thus (Sosein) and being dynamically actual (Aktsein). God acts in terms of the Spirit's operational kenotic presence within the margins of the creatureliness of people and the natural cosmic world as the kenotic clothing of God. A dynamic interpretation of the integral and differential character of being and becoming suggests that making sense of the dynamics of the formation of identities and identification is an ever ongoing endeavour. The Kimberley Process and Certificate Scheme : a classical Aristotelian rhetorical analysis of the international tripartite regime against conflict diamonds

Established in 2003, the Kimberley Process (KP) is a binding agreement; backed by the United Nations, that unites civil societies, state actors and the diamond industry to safeguard ‘conflict' diamonds from entering legitimate rough diamond trade around the world. The unique international tripartite organization is voluntary but mandates state participants to abide by the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) minimum requirements in order to stem the financing or wars against legitimate governments. This study represents the first to explore the communications within the KP. The linguistic turn relies on Classical rhetoric theory with an emphasis on Aristotle's three appeals of persuasion (“pisteis”): ethos, logos and pathos of elite actors in the KP. As for the precise nature of the contribution to rhetorical analysis, this project is best characterised as an application of Classical principals of rhetorical analysis, rather than as a development of theory. A comprehensive literature review of the KP and KPCS is another distinctive contribution. Furthermore, this academic endeavour offers a unique method as shown in the observation of a KP Intersessional meeting. Supplementing the qualitative inquiry, semi-structured interviews were conducted with all of the KP groups and included a wide sample of civil society international and national non-government organizations, state actors and industry members otherwise not represented in previous empirical efforts on the subject. The data chapters achieve the primary aim to add to the understanding of the KP. Firstly, the civil societies engage in boycott rhetoric using ethos and negative pathos. As for state actors, the KP Chair exhibits charismatic leadership rhetoric, while ‘recognized' established states use logical reasoning, the ‘outlier' states evoke positive pathos. Lastly, the diamond industry experts appeal to negative emotions, the World Diamond Council to logos, and De Beers to positive emotional appeals. Combined, the rhetoric shows (a) how KP rhētors use different rhetorical strategies; (b) which in turn shape distinct discourses; (c) and contain dissimilar claims; (d) points to different motivations; (e) highlight different identities; (f) reveal key characteristics, and; (g) the nature of relationships within the KP. The organization rhetorical analysis also entails how the multiple KP leaders view the KP and KPCS and change. While the rhetoric helps demonstrate the constraints surrounding the KP and KPCS it also underlines the primary human rights and human security in which they all share. This thesis provides an extended critical view of the rhetoric by connecting Aristotelian pisteis with different conceptions of power outlined by French and Raven (1959) and Lukes (2005/1974). Combined, the rhetoric helps to explain the ways the KP attempts to achieve their specific political and economic goals while also building relationships with their stakeholders. Rhetoric is a worthwhile theory and methodological approach in order to explore organizations. The KP, and other international organizations provide an opportune arena for further rhetorical attention.

Rhetorik in der Corona Pandemie –Appell oder Diktatur der Vernunft? : Wie drei demokratische Staatsoberhäupter, Merkel in Deutschland, Ardern in Neuseeland und Löfven in Schweden, in ihren Reden die Maßnahmen als Reaktion auf die Covid-19 Pandemie im März 2020 verbalisieren

Die vorliegende Arbeit will den Fokus auf die angewandte Rhetorik (Aristoteles & Krapinger 2019) in einer Krise lenken, da von ihrer Effektivität die Rettung von Menschenleben abhängig ist (Ernst. 2004. S.247). Der Impuls für diese Arbeit kam deshalb von zwei Richtungen: zum einen ist es die aktuelle, durch die Corona Pandemie und Klimakrise geprägte gesellschaftliche Realität, in der die Autorin sich selbst bewegt und die es besser zu verstehen gilt. Zum anderen bezweifelt die Autorin die von Szymon Wròbel (2015) gemachte Behauptung, dass die heutigen, politischen Reden sich fast ausschließlich des Pathos bedienen und vor allem an die Emotionen der Zuhörer appellieren. Für die rhetorische Analyse wurde deshalb zunächst die sprachwissenschaftliche Theorie der Textpragmatik (Ernst 2004. S. 265) mit den Grundbegriffen von Logos, Ethos und Pathos (Aristoteles 2019. S.78) verknüpft und anschließend auf die drei ausgewählten Reden strukturell angewandt. Es konnte dadurch bewiesen werden, dass sich Ethos und Pathos ausgewogen in den ausgewählten Reden vorfinden lassen. Es bleibt die Frage, ob politische Reden ohne emotionelle Wirkung überhaupt Sinn machen würden. Von dem Ergebnis der Analyse ließen sich ebenfalls Rückschlüsse zu den jeweiligen Vertrauensverhältnissen zwischen Sprecher (Regierung) und Hörer (Bürger) ableiten und eine Verbindung zur sprachlichen Machtausübung herstellen. Demnach schlägt die Autorin am Ende vor, die Reden Merkels und Arderns als Diktaturen der Vernunft zu definieren und die Rede von Löfven als Appell der Vernunft. Es wurde deutlich, welch wichtigen Einfluß Vertrauen und die umfassende Interpretation und Auswahl von wissenschaftlichem Wissen als Vorbereitung auf die Ausarbeitung von politischen Reden haben und das unterschiedliche Kulturen in diesem Sinne ihr Krisenmanagement und sprachlichen Appelle auf unterschiedliche Voraussetzungen, mit unterschiedlichen Wirkungsfunktionen aufbauen. So stimmt die Autorin am Ende Wróbels Interpretation von Nietzsches Idee bezüglich der Rationalität und Rhetorik zu: Power does not limit itself, however, to simply defining a given interpretation or view of reality, rather, power defines and creates concrete social reality. Je résiste, donc je suis : la figure du Sage comme vecteur expressif de la résistance vitaliste au cinéma et dans le jeu vidéo

L’immense panoplie d’ouvrages et de travaux consacrés tant au cinéma qu’au jeu vidéo s’évertue très souvent à examiner une œuvre quelle qu’elle soit dans son ensemble, ou à relier des motifs similaires entre plusieurs cas pour en dégager des concepts, des notions et des lignes théoriques. Plus rarement la question des plans, des segments bien spécifiques d’un film ou d’un jeu a été abordée, en particulier les fragments ou les détails se plaçant en porte-à-faux par rapport à la continuité habituelle du reste de l’œuvre. Soudainement, ce personnage d’apparence statique en avant-plan contemple une temporalité affolée en arrière-plan, ou une section de ce film génère de la curiosité vis-à-vis du reste de sa narration. Ces points spéciaux étonnent, surprennent, et attirent l’attention en se demandant quelle est leur fonction aussi bien narrative qu’esthétique. La philosophie antique et ses synthèses contemporaines inspirent un terme, celui de « résistance vitaliste » qui ne frictionne qu’avec une section de la structure sans en chambouler les fondations, dans le seul but de manifester son existence, mue par la volonté de se déclarer au grand jour. Les conséquences sur les protagonistes de l’histoire n’en sont pas moins négligeables, car ces segments spéciaux requièrent également une attention de leur part, et alimentent leur désir de résister à leur tour, tantôt dans l’alignement esthétique de ce point de l’œuvre, tantôt contre. La même philosophie antique désigne dans pareil cas de figure une démarche de délibération, de jugement du pour et du contre, première phase essentielle pour entrer en résistance. Le héros devient alors Sage – également d’inspiration antique –, un être apte à éclairer les zones obscures et à percer l’apparente stabilité de l’autorité en place en s’attaquant à ces nœuds névralgiques. La présente thèse s’accordera à déplier cette analyse sur quatre chapitres qui l’emmèneront du particulier au général, en considérant la matière filmique même et l’entité enregistreuse (la caméra) en première instance, avant de passer aux relations entre la matière du médium et le personnage qui s’en délie, puis aux fragmentations des univers diégétiques en présence, pour enfin questionner le contexte global dans lequel l’œuvre est nécessairement saisie, fournissant les clefs de la résistance par « guérilla ». La délibération, le Sage et la résistance seront constamment au cœur des préoccupations, dès lors que le Diable se cache dans les détails. / The tremendous amount of academic papers dedicated both to cinema and video games often examine any work through its general structure, or link similar motives between several examples in order to conceptualize notions or theoretical frames. The problem of shots, or of specific fragments in a film or a video game, has been rarely questioned, particularly some peculiar details that stick out and go against the overall flow of the work involved. For instance, a static-looking character in the foreground of a picture gazes at another kind of temporality in the background (in slow or fast motion, for example), or a section of a film seems aesthetically odd compared to the rest of the narration it is inserted in. Those special bits tend to surprise the viewer, and attract their attention whilst the latter wonders about both the narrative and aesthetic role of those fragments. The antic philosophy and its modern synthesis inspire the concept of “vitalist resistance”, designating a contradictory element (even a counter-element) in one or a couple of parts of the whole structure without intending to make its foundations collapse, for the sole purpose of manifesting itself, motivated by the desire to exist in plain sight. The consequences on the protagonists of the story are far from being insignificant, since those particular segments call out to their attention as well, and incite them to resist, either alongside the aesthetic involved, either against. In such case, the same philosophy points out the necessity of making decisions, judging the pros and cons as the essential first step to resisting. The hero thus becomes a Sage – inspired by the antic philosophy as well –, in other words, an individual capable of enlightening obscure parts of the world and shaking the apparent stability of the present authority, by mincing onto those delicate bits. This thesis spreads out its analysis over four chapters that will develop the actual subject from the particular to the general, first by considering the film matter itself and the recording entity (the camera), before examining the connections between that matter and the character who unbinds himself from it, the shattering of diegetic universes, and finally the global context in which the work (film or video game) is inevitably set in, leading a “guerilla” kind of resistance. The process of decision making, the Sage and the resistance will all be at the very heart of the present work, since the Devil lurks in the details.

Bibliography: leaves 653-669 / Before God created human beings, He devised a plan to save them in case they sinned. In this plan, the second Person of the Godhead would become human. Thus, the incarnation of the second Person of the Godhead was solely for the purpose of saving fallen, sinful human beings. There would have been no incarnation if human beings had not sinned. Thus, the nature of the mission that necessitated the incarnation determined what kind of human nature Jesus was to assume. It was sin that necessitated the incarnation – sin as a tendency and sin as an act of disobedience. In His incarnational life and later through His death on Calvary’s cross, Jesus needed to deal with this dual problem of sin. In order for Him to achieve this, He needed to identify Himself with the fallen humanity in such a way that He would qualify to be the substitute for the fallen humanity. In His role as fallen humanity’s substitute, He would die vicariously and at the same time have sin as a tendency rendered impotent. Jesus needed to assume a human nature that would qualify Him to be an understanding and sympathetic High Priest. He needed to assume a nature that would qualify Him to be an example in overcoming temptation and suffering. Thus, in this study, after comparing and critically evaluating the Christological views of Jack Sequeira, Millard J. Erickson and Norman R. Gulley, I propose that Jesus assumed a unique post-fall (postlapsarian) human nature. He assumed the very nature that all human beings since humankind’s fall have, with its tendency or leaning towards sin. However, unlike other human beings, who are sinners by nature and need a saviour, Jesus was not a sinner. I contend that Jesus was unique because, first and foremost, He was conceived in Mary’s womb by the power of the Holy Spirit and was filled with the Holy Spirit throughout His earthly life. Second; He was the God-Man; and third, He lived a sinless life.
