[pt] O PROCESSO DE PATRIMONIALIZAÇÃO DO JUDAÍSMO IMAGINÁRIO: O CASO DO MEMORIAL DO HOLOCAUSTO NO RIO DE JANEIRO (2016– 2020) / [en] THE PROCESS OF PATRIMONIALIZATION OF IMAGINARY JUDAISM: THE CASE OF THE HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL IN RIO DE JANEIRO (2016–2020)

BIANCA PEREIRA BASTOS 23 May 2023 (has links)
[en] The present work purposes to understand the political-theological, social and identity relations present in the process of uses of imaginary Judaism by the new Christian right in Brazil. Comprising neo-Pentecostal groups and conservative jews, the right establishes commonalities that extend beyond the conservative aspect. To understand this dynamic, we turn to the implementation process of the Memorial to the Victims of the Holocaust, located in Morro do Pasmado in Rio de Janeiro. This object provided a case analysis for understanding the grammar of action of the new right that goes beyond the religious field, starting to dispute in other spheres, as is the case of heritage and memory. In order to explore the theme, interviews were conducted with actors involved in the process of building the Memorial (curatorship and architecture), in addition to surveying the process that involved the National Artistic and Historical Heritage Institute (IPHAN), the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and the Association of Residents and Friends of Botafogo (AMAB). Such sources provided a perspective on the elaboration of the building, until its implementation, addressing the political and memory disputes of the groups involved.

[pt] O REINO E A GLÓRIA: UM ESTUDO SOBRE POLÍTICA E MORALIDADE CONSERVADORA EVANGÉLICA NA POLÍTICA BRASILEIRA / [en] THE KINGDOM AND THE GLORY: A STUDY ON POLITICS AND EVANGELICAL CONSERVATIVE MORALITY IN THE BRAZILIAN REPUBLIC

LUIZ FELIPE WAITZ 29 September 2023 (has links)
[en] This paper aims at an historical analysis of the formation of a Conservative Moral Identity on big Brazilian evangelical denominations. Following the historical development of Brazilian Pentecostalism and undertaking the Brazilian Military Dictatorship and the following 1988 restoration of the Democratic Regime as political moments, this paper deals with conceptual divisions concerning Pentecostals and Neopentecostals paving the way to the construction of an Evangelical Identity made by the mass media, and the following evangelical participation in Politics aligned with reactionary conservatism. The main investigation is to try to explore the way by which the evangelical participation in Brazilian politics started and was developed, as well as the reason why evangelical politicians undertook the ideological path of the Conservative Right. We seek to lay more attention to the different evangelical traditions, their values and histories to demonstrate that, despite much is said about a evangelical political agenda, there is no single way of evangelical participation in Politics.

Tolerance or truth? : The good, the bad and the political in the discourse of the American Family Association

Roghult, Madeleine January 2012 (has links)
This master’s thesis conducts a discourse analysis on a political organization within the New Christian Right (NCR), the American Family Association (AFA). The purpose of the study is to analyze the conditions of possibility for a politics that aims to prevent progress for LGBT rights and does so by analyzing the political terrain where operations of power produce particular and meaningful political practices. As analytical tools the study relies on a theory of the political by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, who together with Michel Foucault also provide an elaborate theory of power. Theoretical work by Wendy Brown provides insights into how politics can be expressed when social antagonisms are prevented from engaging in political contestation. Results of the discourse analysis trace social antagonisms in AFA discourse to a dislocation of the social where new articulatory practices have established new relationships between elements of discourse and thereby also changed the nature of social intelligibility and interaction. AFA discourse articulates family values based on the privileged signifiers of freedom, democracy and rights, which is utilized both for a separatist politics of discrimination and an inclusive politics of social assimilation. AFA discourse shows many points of antagonism and organizes an enemy in postmodernism. Freedom as a mode of governmentality conditions the political demands that are and can be made which can be traced to a hegemonic neoliberal articulation. AFA discourse challenges neoliberal hegemony through the process of separatism, yet is intimately bound to the hegemonic way of making political demands in order to gain discursive strength and legitimacy.

Religion was embedded in the political scenario of the US at the onset of the nation and, since then, religion and politics have been intertwined into a complex system of coexistence that has strongly influenced the country s destiny. Although the debate regarding the amalgam between religion and politics in the US has been ongoing among the most diverse sectors of information and research, both locally and internationally, it was after the inauguration of George W. Bush and the attacks on 9/11, that such issue gained global repercussion, at a level never before seen in history. In this regard, the present work intends to analyze the relation of historical-cultural, sociological and psychological facts on the political-religious events, particularly those related to the international political scenario, which is hereby represented by the US. Thus, the subject of this investigation focuses on analyzing the presence of religious concepts as found in the speeches of President George W. Bush, during his two terms in office. More specifically, this dissertation examines the phenomena that are deeply rooted in the culture of the United States and have played a key role in supporting Bush s political actions. In this way, it evaluates the degree to which the events on 9/11 served as a bulwark for the religious rhetoric in Bush s discourse and became a tool to legitimate the war against Iraq, his political modus operandi and, ultimately, lead him to reelection. It is therefore concluded that, the ethical, moral and religious factors, deeply set in the culture of the United States throughout its history, together with the trauma caused by the events on 9/11, contributed to the acceptance of Bush s political decisions. The theoretical basis for the work is the hermeneutic methodology, built on a theoretical and bibliographic tripartite design that is sociological, philosophical-linguistic as well as psychological. The first line of investigation is based on the concept of Civil Religion, first developed by Robert Bellah and later expanded by other theoreticians; the second one follows Chaïm Perelman s theory of the New Rhetoric, and the third rests on C. G. Jung s Archetype.
