Student Number : 0318162X - MA research report - School of Literature and Language Studies - Faculty of Humanities / This Research Report comprises the preface to an opera libretto based on the English translation by Charles Eglington (1964) of Etienne Leroux’s novel Seven Days at the Silbersteins (1962), and the libretto itself. In the preface I discuss the genre of operatic libretto and the literary and personal context in which Leroux worked, by way of explaining why Seven Days made such a compelling challenge to adapt as libretto. I consider some of the issues involved in transposing a rambling allegorical narrative produced in Afrikaans in the 1960s in the lineage of the plaasroman, into a tighter postapartheid discourse in English in the 2000s, one that creates space for live music, singing, acting, staging, setting and pre-recorded audio-visuals – some of which take over the ‘layered’ significations of Leroux’s earlier literary discourse. A work of great poetic resonance in the original language (beautifully captured by poet and critic Charles Eglington in translation), this surrealist novel, so rooted in cultural and ideological tropes unique to Leroux’s time and yet presented by him as if they belonged to a timeless world, presents opportunities for a new kind of realisation as an operatic text in our own time.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo principal identificar a influência exercida pela Literatura Brasileira sobre a ópera lírica italiana através da composição e apresentação da ópera Il Guarany, de Antônio Carlos Gomes, no Teatro alla Scala de Milão, em 1870. Esta pesquisa centra-se em cinco pontos de referência: as origens de Carlos Gomes e a sua formação inicial; a vida teatral e literária na Corte durante o Segundo Império e a ida de Gomes para o Rio de Janeiro a fim de estudar no Conservatório Nacional, suas produções musicais durante esse período; o período de transição do melodrama italiano em meados do século XIX, grandemente influenciado pela grand-opéra francesa, na época em que Gomes estudou no Conservatório de Milão; o indianismo como discurso nacionalista romântico, que deu origem ao romance O Guarani, de José de Alencar, que foi adaptado como libreto da ópera de Gomes; os efeitos que a ópera Il Guarany produziu na Itália e no Brasil. Por fim, apresentamos o libreto em italiano, extraído da partitura e a tradução que foi elaborada para a apresentação da ópera em português, no Brasil, concluindo com as considerações que levam em conta a influência exercida pela grande literatura sobre os compositores de ópera / This work has a main objective identify the influence of the Brasilian Literature on the Italian lyric opera through of composition and presentation of lyric opera Il Guarany, by Antônio Carlos Gomes, in Scala Theater from Milan, in the 1870. This research is centered in five focal reference points: the origins of Carlos Gomes and his professional training; the theatrical and literary life in the Court during the Second Reign and his departure for Rio de Janeiro to study in the National Conservatory; the period of transition in mid-nineteenth-century Italian melodrama, greatly influenced by French grand-opéra, a period during which Gomes finished his studies in Milan; the Indianismo as a Romantic Nationalistic discourse, which originated the novel O Guarani, by José de Alencar, later adapted as a libretto for Gomes´ opera; the effects of the opera in Italy and Brazil. Finally we present the libretto in Italian drew on the score and the translation particulary maked for your presentation in Portuguese language, in Brazil. We conclude speak about the influence over great literature on the opera composers

Inicialmente, a seguinte tese foi baseada em uma revisão bibliográfica de tudo o que se havia escrito sobre Carlos Gomes, segundo as bibliografias da música brasileira realizadas por Luiz Heitor Correia de Azevedo e Vicente Salles a segunda restrita à bibliografia do compositor - até a época da Semana de Arte Moderna. Tivemos o objetivo de avaliar o que se conhecia, nesta época, sobre Carlos Gomes, para então estudar o efeito que a Semana e o Modernismo exerceram sobre sua imagem, privilegiando sempre a ótica de Mario de Andrade. Por fim, foram estudadas as conseqüências do mesmo efeito sobre a bibliografia musical subseqüente, visando rever alguns conceitos e preconceitos - arraigados em nossa cultura - que foram prejudiciais ao compositor. / Initially, the following thesis was based on a bibliographical review of all that had been writen about Carlos Gomes, according to bibliographies of brazilian music realized by Luiz Heitor Correia de Azevedo and Vicente Salles - the second work restricted to the bibliography of the composer - until Modern Art Week. We intended to evaluate what had been known, by that time, concerning Carlos Gomes, in order to study the effect that the Modern Art Week as well as the Modernism performed upon his image, always privileging the point of view of Mario de Andrade. In conclusion, there have been studied the consequences of the efect abovementioned under the subsequent brazilian musical historiography, aiming to analyze some concepts and predjucides - deep-rooted to our culture - which had been prejudicial to the composer.

Dentre as diversas formas de expressões artísticas, o presente trabalho tem seu foco no estudo da ópera, em especial na construção e performance dos trajes usados em cena. O maior desafio na construção desses trajes é assegurar as técnicas e os procedimentos adequados para o aprimoramento deste processo. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo propor diretrizes para a modelagem e construção de trajes de ópera, levando em consideração variáveis ergonômicas, de usabilidade e conforto. Para tanto, foram analisados os trajes do acervo do Theatro Municipal de São Paulo e realizadas entrevistas com profissionais da área. Desta forma, foi possível identificar recursos construtivos que favorecem aspectos de ergonomia, usabilidade e conforto. A análise dos trajes bem como as informações coletadas nas entrevistas, possibilitaram a definição de um conjunto de diretrizes para apoiar o trabalho de figurinistas, modelistas, costureiras, na construção de trajes, bem como cantores, atrizes e bailarinos em suas performances / Among many forms of artistic expressions, the present work has its focus on the study of opera, especially on development and performances of the costumes worn on stage. The biggest challenge on these costumes development is to ensure the techniques and proper procedures for the process improvement. The current work aims to propose guidelines for the pattern making and opera costumes development, considering ergonomic variables, usability and comfort. Therefore, the costumes from Theatro Municipal de São Paulo were analysed and interviews with field professionals were taken. Thus, it was possible to identify projected resources that benefit ergonomic aspects, usability and comfort. The costumes analysis as well as the interviews information made it possible to define the set of guidelines to support the work of costume designers, pattern makers, seamstress on costumes development, such as singers, actors, dancers on their performances

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar a representação das representações das relações raciais na telenovela brasileira. As tramas selecionadas para a realização deste estudo são: \"Da Cor do Pecado\", \"A lua me disse\" e \"Páginas da Vida\", todas exibidas pela Rede Globo de Televisão. Por meio de alguns recursos dos estudos de recepção, analisamos os diálogos das personagens envolvidas nos conflitos raciais, e a leitura desses diálogos realizada pelos estudantes universitários entrevistados no Brasil e em Angola. / This research has the intention to analyze the reception of racial relations presented in the brazilian soap opera. The soap operas chosen for supporting this research are \"Da Cor do Pecado\", \"A lua me disse\" and \"Páginas da Vida\". All of them broadcasted by Globo Channel. Using some resources of the study of reception, we analyze the dialogs of the characters involved in the racial conflicts, and the reading of those dialogs realized by university students interviewed in Brazil and Angola.

Mulheres Apaixonadas: a imagem da mulher contemporânea na telenovela analisa o primeiro capítulo da novela Mulheres Apaixonadas, escrito por Manuel Carlos e exibido pela Rede Globo de televisão no dia dezessete de fevereiro de 2003. A linha teórica que baliza a pesquisa é a teoria semiótica de linha francesa, desenvolvida por A. J. Greimas e seus discípulos. A dissertação se divide em duas partes. A primeira parte é composta por sete capítulos resultantes das análises dos principais núcleos temáticofigurativos do texto. Nela se observa como as histórias das personagens se articulam e produzem certos efeitos de sentido que as posicionam como existentes em um mundo parecido com a realidade de quem assiste. As escolhas narrativas e discursivas mostram-se como delimitadoras dos papéis que cada mulher dessa trama assume, desencadeando, portanto, o fio condutor dos seus percursos. A segunda parte do trabalho é dedicada ao sincretismo de linguagens, já que esta é a base de um texto televisivo. Trataremos dos efeitos de sentido criados pelas imagens e também das relações semi-simbólicas estabelecidas entre os elementos do plano da expressão e do plano de conteúdo. No conjunto, a dissertação mostra como a telenovela representa as mulheres no início do século XXI e quais mecanismos discursivos manipulam o telespectador a querer acompanhar a novela. / Women in love: the contemporary woman image in the soap opera comes to analyse the first chapter of Women in love (Mulheres Apaixonadas) written by Manuel Carlos and Tv-broadcasted by Rede Globo, on February seventeenth of 2003. The theoretical line that edges the research is the semiotic French line theory developed by A. J. Greimas and his disciples. The dissertation is divided in two parts. The first one is compounded by seven chapters resulted of analysises from the main figurative thematic nucleus of the text. You can observe in it how the stories of the characters are articulated and produce certain effects of sense that are arranged in a world like the viewers own reality. The chosen narratives and discursive talks reveal in what way they delimit the roles that each woman is assuming in the plot, threading their way through their journeys. The second part of this work is dedicated to the syncretism of languages since it is the basis of a broadcasting tv-text. We will work on the effects of sense produced by images and also from semi-symbolic relations established among the elements of the expression plan and the contents plan. In all, the dissertation shows in what manner the tvsoap opera represents women in the beginning of XXI century and which discursive mechanisms manipulate the desire of the viewer to watch the show.

A temática deste estudo tem como investigação a sociologia da moda a partir da telenovela brasileira Avenida Brasil, que pode ser considerada um estudo de caso onde demonstra a forma de consumo das camadas periféricas da sociedade. A Moda tem sido alvo de reflexões e estudos de alguns filósofos, economistas, sociólogos e psicólogos durante os últimos três séculos. As contribuições da sociologia para o estudo da moda podem ser divididas em dois períodos: o primeiro a partir do final do século XIX à primeira metade do século XX, onde autores como Spencer, Simmel, Tarde e Veblen, publicaram livros e ensaios que contêm esclarecedoras hipóteses deste fenômeno social complexo. O segundo período estende-se desde os anos cinquenta do século passado até os dias atuais e apresentam trabalhos de estudiosos que ao lado de observações intuitivas também contêm pesquisas sobre o fenômeno da moda. Esta pesquisa visa traçar argumentos sobre o fenômeno da moda a partir de alguns filósofos conhecidos (de Kant a Rousseau, de Nietzsche a Benjamin) e na área da sociologia igualmente considerados (de Tarde para Blumer, Baudrillard Spencer, Simmel e Crane). Uma antologia que parte também, de alguns textos traduzidos pela primeira vez do italiano, oferecendo uma visão das teorias sociológicas sobre a difusão da moda e suas características fundamentais / The theme of this study is to research the sociology of fashion from Avenue Brazil Brazilian soap opera, which can be considered a case study which demonstrates how to use the peripheral layers of society. The fashion has been the subject of studies and reflections of some philosophers, economists, sociologists and psychologists over the last three centuries. The contributions of sociology to the study of fashion can be divided into two periods: the first from the late nineteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century, where authors like Spencer, Simmel, Tarde and Veblen, published books and essays containing enlightening hypotheses of this complex social phenomenon. The second period extends from the fifties of the last century to the present day and present works of scholars who with intuitive observations to also contain research on the phenomenon of fashion. This research aims to outline arguments about the phenomenon of fashion from some well-known philosophers (Kant to Rousseau, Nietzsche Benjamin) and in sociology also considered (Afternoon to Blumer, Baudrillard Spencer, Simmel and Crane). An anthology that also part of some translated for the first time the Italian texts, offering a vision of sociological theories on the diffusion of fashion and its key features

O trabalho investiga a atividade musical da cidade de São Paulo no período de 1765 a 1822 e verifica como a circulação da música entre as esferas profana e sagrada e o consequente processo de laicização dos espaços contribuiram para a ampliação das práticas de sociabilidade da época. A relação entre o produtor, no caso compositor ou músico, e as instituições atendidas, tais como as igrejas e as irmandades, ou os indivíduos, será abordada. Junta-se a esta relação aquela existente entre a recepção por parte do público e os diferentes meios de reprodução da música. Com esse estudo, estabelecemos o circuito musical sacro e profano no período. Evidenciam-se as atividades da Casa da Ópera no governo de D. Luís Antônio de Sousa Botelho Mourão e como elas propiciaram à cidade de São Paulo uma integração cultural às principais cidades do Brasil colonial. / This work investigates the musical activities of São Paulo city from 1765 to 1822 and verifies how the music circulation in the sacred as well as profane circles and its following process of democratization of spaces contributed for the growth of the socialization practices of the colonial society. The relationship between the producer - the composer or musician in this case, and the attended institutions such as churches, brotherhoods or even private contracts, will be discussed. Besides this relationship there is also the reception of the society during the period and the different ways of music reproduction. Studying this relationship we establish the church and profane musical circuit of the period. The activities of the house of opera during the government of D. Luís Antônio de Sousa Botelho Mourão gave to the city of São Paulo a cultural integration to the principal cities of colonial Brazil.

Carl Maria von Weber är en av de första romantiska kompositörerna. Han skrev främst opera men även en fagottkonsert som är en grundpelare i fagottrepertoaren. I den här examensuppsatsen studeras och jämförs Webers opera Der Freischütz och hans fagottkonsert i F-dur i syfte att få en mer välgrundad tolkning av fagottkonserten. Undersökningen genomfördes med studier av Webers historia, studier av notmaterial från fagottkonserten och operan Der Freischütz, lyssnande av operan och sedan analys och jämförelser av de två verken. Referensmaterielat är John Warracks bok Carl Maria von Weber från 1968, notmaterial från fagottkonserten –såväl originalmanuskript som utgåvor –och från operan, samt inspelningar av både fagottkonserten och operan. Der Freischütz och fagottkonserten har en del liknande fraser och karaktärer. Detta i kombination med Webers historik antyder att operan som konstform är en stark inspirationskraft till all hans musik, inklusive fagottkonserten. Genom att låta sig inspireras av operamusiken kan man få en mer välgrundad tolkning av fagottkonserten. Motsvarande studier borde kunna genomföras med exempelvis Mozarts fagottkonsert och hans operor.

Richard Wagner is one of the most important and influential composers for scholars of film music. His concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk or "total art work," which combined music, visuals and storytelling, played an indelible role in the creation of film aesthetics, especially with regard to music and sound design. Yet, Wagner's actual music has its own curious legacy in film history, in terms of how it is used to interact with a story that often bears no relation to those of Wagner's operas. This is particularly interesting with regard to the Der Ring des Nibelungen (aka "the Ring Cycle"). The Ring is his most ambitious and influential, and densest work, and perhaps the one with the greatest lingering legacy in popular culture. For example, "Ride of the Valkyries," an excerpt from Die Walküre made famous by Looney Tunes shorts and Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, is still a frequent presence in film, television and advertising that want to evoke sounds of war and conquest--associations created more from its use in those contexts than the original opera. This thesis will examine films and television series of the last half-century that have used musical examples from the Ring in their soundtracks. Works given particular focus will include Apocalypse Now (1979), the Japanese anime series Princess Tutu (2002-2003) and Terrence Malick's historical romance The New World (2006). The examination will discern both how film media has influenced modern cultural perceptions of the original operas--and of Wagner's legacy in general--and also how said film media is itself a reflection of modern attitudes about Wagner and his masterwork.
