A study of si-clauses containing the -re form or its alternatives

Lavissière, Mary Catherine 28 January 2017 (has links)
The -re form, or “future subjunctive” (cantare), is obsolete in Modern Standard Spanish, yet is still observed in legal literature. In this dissertation, we made the hypothesis that the -re form has survived because it is useful for the community of speakers who interact with legal literature. Using the theory of the linguistique du signifiant, we postulated that the different uses of the -re form are linked its signifier. To test ourhypothesis, we composed a corpus of several legal documents. They represent of each of the five epochs of the Spanish mode system defined by Gilles Luquet (1988). We chose to examine the role of this verb form in the protases of si-clauses because experts do not agree on the legitimate alternative verb forms in this syntax. After the observation and analysis of the examples collected, we made four conclusions. Firstly, the alteration between the -se form and the -re form in protases of si-clauses dates from the Middle Ages. Secondly, the -re form and its alternatives have pragmatic uses: they contribute to textual organization and allow the jurist to move backwards and forwards in the construction of his or herarguments (deictic function). Thirdly, the verbal morphology of the apodoses seems strongly linked with the legal subgenre of the documents. Fourth and finally, our study of the -re form and its alternatives sheds light on the specificities of the morpheme si: because it is part of the Spanish affirmation system, the morpheme si always brings the speaker’s perspective back to the present, allowing the jurist to observe the event unfold from a point in the non-past (-re form) or the past (-se form) without disrupting the text’scoherence.

Pertubations de la fonction symbolique dans la maladie d'Alzheimer et leurs consequences cognitives et affectives / Disturbances of the symbolic function in Alzheimer's disease and their cognitive and affective consequences

Gonzalez-Monge, Louis 20 February 2015 (has links)
Starting from the observation and experimental study of Alzheimer's disease early situations with association of hippocampal amnesia, anomia and constructive apraxia for projective space (S3A syndrome), we propose that the co-occurrence of cognitive and psychopathological disorders may be linked to a stiffening of the symbolic function, namely the reduction of the span of substitution of a signified item by signifiers. We examine this hypothesis about the cognitive impairment on the basis of the symbolic function as defined by Piaget. We extend it to psychopathological aspects starting with the symbolization and its transformations. The concept of symbolic distance is mentioned as a common denominator for all these processes, as a target for the stiffening of the symbolic function. It could be related to working memory impairment, causing:_ Proactively, a destructuration of atributional elements in the “broad semantic network”, contributing to the genesis of cognitive impairment._ Retroactively, because of the erosion of secondary mechanisms, an activation of archaic phenomena - including the anxiety of non-representation - and of the archaic defenses. Some psychotherapeutic implications are considered.

Поетика постмодернизмау драмама Александра Поповића(књижевни поступци, деконструкција темељних образаца, ново читање традиције) / Poetika postmodernizmau dramama Aleksandra Popovića(književni postupci, dekonstrukcija temeljnih obrazaca, novo čitanje tradicije) / The Poetics of Postmodernismin the dramas of Aleksandra Popovic(literary procedures, the deconstruction of the basic patterns, a new reading of the tradition)

Todorić Gordana 31 January 2015 (has links)
Konačno, tezom o apofatizmu, koja svoju paralelu ima u ruskom postmodernizmu, ma koliko na prvi pogled bila nespojiva s Popovićem i njegovim dramama, onakvim kako ga pamti ideolo&scaron;ki opterećeno književnoj nasleđe, verujemo da odgovaramo na pitanje za&scaron;to Popović pi&scaron;e, tada i tako.</p> / <p>In our paper-work we shall try, concerning the corpus of dramas for adults, which are in printed forms available to the public, to point to what we assume is po-etic basis of Popovic&#39;s writings, by singling out certain interpretative problems. The nature of those works imposed apparatus and strategies that belong to the postmodernism. It is because the writer himself, as we belive, is postmodern writer.<br />First of all, Popovic&#39;s oeuvre, chronologically speaking, interferes with postmodernism in Serbian literature and we are interested in the conection between these two phenomena. Also, in his literary work there is a significal presence of, primarly linguistic, material taken from Serbian literary heritage and traditional culture, and the relationship to the tradition is the one of the relevant questions that postmodernism raises. The same can be said about the problem of literary redefining cultural patterns. By consequent reshaping of farce genre аs the fundamental Popovic`s mood, he is not just on the trail of XXth century<br />literary aspiration, but through special poetic procedures he makes visible those cultural phenomena that had, at the time when Popovic`s oeuvre appeared, significant impact on cultural matrix of Serbia and indicate what in culture (incuding literature) will only happen in the future.<br />In hermetic texts, those considered as the second tendency of Popovic`s oeuvre, representing void as unimaginable, implemented as a play (language) games, is another name for the apophatism, which, we believe, permeates entire Popovic`s oeuvre. Nihilism will not end up in suicide of any of his characters (which would be a tragic forerunner of postdramatic theater in Sarah Kane`s version) but in self-sacrificing (in drama Afera Ljiljak and its opposite &ndash; Ružičasta noć), a kind of working out of Popovic`s theme &ndash; quest, which signals a fundamental refusa of visible reality. He knows that inherited concept of discursive hierarchies is deception but he did not abandon the idea of searching for Axis.<br />By problematizing binary opposition center &ndash; margine, by deconstruction of the grand narratives of culture which means establishing specific kind of continuity with legacy (even with those remained sidelined), by terminating the hierarchy of cultural codes, by discussing the metaphysics of presence and practice of signification to which he belongs (by focussing language), Popovic sets the framework for (re)construction оf poetic principles of his ouvre.<br />Finally, through the thesis on apophatism which has its parallel in Russian postmodenism, although, at first glance, that thesis is incompatible with Popovic and his dramas, as it is remembered by ideologically laden literary legacy, we believe that we have answered the question why Popovic has been writing, then and so.</p>

Des fantômes dans la voix : une hypothèse neuropsychanalytique sur la structure de l’inconscient / Phantoms in the voice : a neuropsychoanalytic hypothesis on the structure of the unconscious

Bazan, Ariane 30 June 2009 (has links)
This study in the domain of « neuropsychoanalysis » proposes a theoretical speculation on the physiological structure of the psychoanalytic unconscious by cross-checking the experimental and clinical observations from both domains. Clinical listening indicates the insistence of recurring phonemes when it comes to conflictual topics, called “phonemic phantoms”. Indeed, as is the case in a phantom limb, the repressed signifier is invested by an intention while its articulation is blocked. However, due to the ambiguous structure of language, a same articulation movement can radically change signification. It is this mechanism that causes the return of the repressed in the signifier and allows for the survival of phonemic phantoms which are thought to weave the linguistic structure of the unconscious. The question of the signifier is presented as an instantiation of a more fundamental question, the emergence of the psychic realm in response to the constraint of the organism to distinguish interior from exterior. For this distinction, the existence of an accurate system of inhibition must be postulated since it has to be able to delineate precisely what in the way of apprehending the world was not anticipated by the organism. This precision is allowed by the sensorimotor model of efference copies, which presentifies the movement before its realisation and shows how inhibition is a condition for representation. For humans, the necessity of the interior-exterior distinction is imperious due to language which renders complex the identification of the locus from where speech is initiated (from where “id” speaks). This necessity leads to the movement of repression, which by inhibition induces phonemic phantoms in the form of negative representations of repressed speech. This work is preceded by an introduction which contextualises the theoretical reflexion in the sometimes controversial history and epistemology of neuropsychoanalysis and which claims a transcendental approach for its methodology.

The revenant signifier : the zombie in comics and cinema

O'Donnell, Stephen January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the zombie’s rise to prominence in popular culture, with a focus on its development within the comics medium. The zombie is not just a ‘floating signifier’ (according to Jerrold E. Hogle), but a revenant signifier, actively and aggressively linking with existing concepts, and transforming them. The thesis also considers both the zombie figure and zombie genre within the parameters of several media – comics, television, film, and literature. The medium of comics is examined in detail as it has evolved through the influence of the zombie just as the zombie has been reshaped by each new representation. In contemporary horror comics, The Walking Dead series is not just commercially successful, it exploits properties of the medium (including panel arrangement, transitions, repetition, and the liminal space within the gutter) to thoroughly explore the metaphors and allusions that have been associated with the zombie. I discuss these metaphors by charting the zombie’s development. A lack of pre-twentieth century literary texts featuring this creature frustrates easy comparison with the monsters of Gothic fiction. Rather than evolving within the novel form, as its rival horror icons have done, the zombie has maintained a visual and visceral identity, maturing with each new incarnation, and becoming ever more gruesome: the walking corpses of ancient texts; a symbol of eternal slavery within Haitian Voodoo folklore; and its modern interpretation as violent and virulent monster. The recent notion of a zombie plague has redefined the creature as a representation of modern fears, and has led to ‘zombie apocalypse’ becoming a commonly-used fantasy scenario. The zombie’s connection to apocalyptic literature is simultaneously ancient and contemporary, with the creature being a signifier of social disorder and disrupted identity. While the emphasis throughout is on the shifting relations between media, comics are the main focus of this study. The symbolism present in the zombie, and the political and cultural ideas stemming from its slow maturation are revealed within The Walking Dead and sustained through the functions of the comics medium. Through the application of Scott McCloud’s comics theory, the closure between panels and the transition within the gutter enhance these ideas, and provide further understanding of the zombie as depicted in comics. The visual/textual relationship within comics is compared with Jacques Lacan’s modalities of consciousness, and the psychoanalytic reading provided here explores the crises of identity within the zombie, and within the fragmented narrative of the comics medium. Alternative psychoanalytic readings, and the physiology/pathology of the zombie itself are undertaken, revealing the creature to be responsive to Julia Kristeva’s concept of the abject, and Slavoj Zizek’s postmodern reworking of Lacanian ideas. The thesis also returns to notions of the Gothic, haunted spaces, and the role of suburbia in the zombie narrative. This is augmented with a study of intertextuality and the “revenant” status of the zombie, and of comics. Through incorporating the critical theory of Kristeva, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Jacques Derrida, and by positioning in parallel comics theorist Thierry Groensteen’s concepts of braiding and arthrology, I emphasise the operations of the zombie figure in the comic book, and other media, asserting that the zombie is a revenant signifier continually returning and transforming, never resting, but endlessly cannibalising and reconstructing debate about identity, morality, and society.

L’empreinte du septénaire : mise en discours et énonciation, Genèse 1-11 et Apocalypse 5-8 / The footprint of the septenary : discursivization and enunciation, Genesis 1-11 and 5-8 Apocalypse

Giroud, Jean-Claude 16 April 2014 (has links)
What procedure of discursivization makes it possible to present the ensemble of varied narratives recounting “origins,” in the book of Genesis of the biblical literature, as an orderly “cycle”? This question leads to the formulation of the hypothesis that the first story of creation, the “septenary of days,” constitutes, as a paradigm, a system capable of structuring the deployment of the following narratives (Gn 2 – 11). The originality of this system consists, above all, in putting in place mechanisms of orientation toward an instance of enunciation which constitutes a “footprint.” Then, the discursivization of the subsequent texts, by means of the discursive path, employs “formant-signifiers” of the “figural” order, likely to recall this footprint and to function as so many indicators of the instance of enunciation. Finally, at the end of the biblical literature, the “septenary of seals” in the book of Revelation (Apocalypse 5-8) reexposes the paradigm, recapitulates the figural, renews the indication of the instance of enunciation, and redefines the orientation toward this instance. Thus, by means of the figural, discursivization ties a veritable “knot” between figurative values and instance of enunciation. In its figural, the figure becomes a stumbling stone along the path of the reading which orients the reader, leading him as close as possible to the positions of the subjects of the instance of enunciation.

Pour une nouvelle approche du "plus-que-parfait" en espagnol contemporain : unicité du signe, motivation, variations / Towards a new approach of the 'pluperfect indicative' in contemporary Spanish : unity of the sign, motivation, variations

Blestel, Elodie 01 December 2012 (has links)
This study focuses on the periphrastic form había- + do/-to/-cho that the grammatical tradition identifies as the ‘pluperfect (past perfect) indicative’ in contemporary Spanish. After reviewing the different approaches to this verbal form, we provide a unique signified for this form that is able to subsume all its discursive manifestations. For this purpose, we adopt the theoretical principles of the ‘Linguistics of the signifier’, which postulates the unity of the linguistic sign – i.e. a signifier corresponds to a single signified, and vice versa – and gives priority to the semiological structure of the signifier. This approach leads us to reexamine había- + do/-to/-cho within the signifying networks of Spanish, and to reconsider the modal structure of the verbal system. Finally, we describe the discursive syntactic behaviour of the Spanish pluperfect, in the development of narrative sequences, but also in certain Latin American diatopic occurrences (contact Spanish / Guarani in particular) since they are ‘borderline case’ among the pluperfect discursive occurrences
