Die vorliegende Ausgabe der „Potsdamer Beiträge zur Sorabistik – Podstupimske pśinoski k Sorabistice“ Adam Mickiewicz, Gedichte in sorbischer Übersetzung, zusammengestellt von Alfred Měškank stellt den Jubiläumsband Nr. 10 unserer Serie dar. Wir sind sehr stolz darauf, die Serie herausgeben zu dürfen und vor allem darauf, das Jubiläum mit so einem würdigen Inhalt zu begehen. Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855) gilt als der größte polnische Dichter, vergleichbar mit J. W. v. Goethe in Deutschland oder John Byron in England. Seine Werke sind in viele Sprachen übersetzt und dadurch in der ganzen Welt bekannt geworden. Bedeutende sorbische Dichter und Übersetzer, wie z.B. Jakub Bart-Ćišinski und Otto Lehmann-Wićaz haben seine Gedichte auch ins Sorbische übersetzt, doch diese Übersetzungen sind verstreut und dem heutigen Interessenten kaum zugänglich. Einige seiner bedeutsamsten Werke, besonders sein Versepos „Pan Tadeusz”, sowie Teile seines dramatischen Werkes „Dziady” fanden erst in neuerer Zeit einen Übersetzer. Die vorliegende Edition, die eine Zusammenstellung aller bisher ins Sorbische/Wendische übersetzten Werke des großen polnischen Dichters der Romantik darstellt, schließt diese Lücke nun. / This edition of Adam Mickiewicz’s poems in Sorbian translation, compiled by Alfred Měškank, represents the anniversary edition # 10 of our series "Potsdam Contributions to Sorabistics - Podstupimske pśinoski k Sorabistice” . We are very proud to release the series and especially flattered to celebrate the anniversary with such a worthy content. Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855) is considered the greatest Polish poet, comparable to JW Goethe in Germany or to John Byron in England. His work has been translated into many languages, and thereby become known throughout the world. Significant Sorbian poets and translators, such as Jakub Bart-Ćišinski and Otto Lehmann-Wićaz have also translated his poems into Sorbian language, but these translations are scattered and difficult to access from today's prospective. Some of his major works, particularly his epic poem "Pan Tadeusz", as well as parts of his dramatic work "Dziady" found only recently a translator. The present edition, which is a compilation of all previously published works of the great Polish romantic poet in Sorbian/Wendish language, fills this gap now.

An important editorial achievement has been the recent translation into Swahili of the first volume of the monumental work on the life of Jesus Christ in ten volumes, L`Evangelo come mi Stato rivelato (the title of the English version is The Poem of the Man-God) by the Italian mystic Maria Valtorta (1897-1961).

Die Dissertation geht am Beispiel der Übersetzung arabischer Redensarten und Redewendungen ins Deutsche der Frage nach, auf welche Weise die hinter dem Text stehenden kulturellen Bezüge und Deutungsmuster beim Übersetzen berücksichtigt werden können. Es soll gezeigt werden, wie also Kulturtransfer beim Übersetzen möglich ist und welche Schwierigkeiten dabei entstehen, und in welcher Art und Weise diese übertragenen Redensarten auf Kulturtransfer und Vermittlung fremdsprachiger Literatur wirken bzw. welchen Einfluss sie ausüben.

The paper presents the basics and the development of Machine Translation and explains different methods for evaluating translation machines on the base of a detailed example. / Die im Rahmen des Seminars "Language and Computers" der englischen Sprachwissenschaft entstandene Arbeit behandelt die Grundlagen und die Entwicklung der Maschinellen Übersetzung und gibt anhand eines ausführlichen Beispiels Einblick in Methoden zur Evaluation von Übersetzungsmaschinen.

Dankbar nimmt man nun aus den Händen italienischer Forscher eine vergleichende begriffsgeschichtliche Untersuchung über die ersten Übersetzungen der Monadologie von Leibniz in die Hand. Deren Übersetzung las das Publikum nämlich früher als das Original, das 1714 entstand. Diese Schrift bestimmte - neben der 1710 veröffentlichten Theodizee - die frühe Wirkung von Leibniz, allerdings eben nicht in der originalen (französischen) Form, denn diese wurde erst 1840 in einer Leibniz-Ausgabe des Hegel-Schülers Johann Eduard Erdmann publiziert. Schon im Jahre 1720 jedoch erschien eine deutsche Übersetzung der Monadologie von Heinrich Köhler, gefolgt im Jahre 1721 von einer anonymen Übersetzung ins Lateinische, veröffentlicht in den Leipziger Acta Eruditorum. Was Antonio Lamarra, Roberto Palaia und Pietro Pimpinella vorlegen, ist ein Vergleich der beiden frühen Übersetzungen mit dem Original.

The concept of equivalence can be said to hold a central position in translation studies. In this particular thesis, different aspects of the equivalence concept are discussed on the basis of five German source texts and their respective Swedish translations. The source texts are situated within the field of beekeeping and were first published in Deutsches Bienenjournal and translated for the Swedish magazine Bitidningen. The equivalence theory presented by the translation theorist Werner Koller (2011) forms the basis of the analysis. Koller distinguishes five different types of equivalence: denotative, connotative, text-normative, pragmatic and formal-aesthetic equivalence. Koller’s equivalence concept is presented and discussed with a selection of illustrative examples displaying translation problems which arose during the translation of the source texts. In the thesis, special attention is paid to when and how the different equivalence aspects were considered. Specifically, it is made evident that sometimes very different translation solutions can be justified depending on which equivalence aspect the translator finds the most important in the current case. In addition, it is argued that the translator has to establish a hierarchy of the most important values of equivalence in each different translation case and for each different target text in order to make the most suitable translation decision. It is also stated that Koller’s theory is very useful for the translator when making decisions in difficult cases and, furthermore, that all of Koller’s five types of equivalence were relevant for the translation decision-making process.

Die Diplomarbeit \"Übersetzung moderner arabischer Lyrik am Beispiel der Songtexte von Arabic-Rock-Bands\" beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie man einen arabischen Rocksong so ins Deutsche übertragen kann, dass er genreintern so originalgetreu wie möglich nachspielbar bzw. nachsingbar ist. Als mögliche Herangehensweise an das Übersetzen von Songtexten im Allgemeinen und Texten arabischer Rockbands im Besonderen beleuchtet diese Arbeit einzelne Schritte und Aspekte des Songtextübersetzens und untersucht die stilistischen Mittel, die in den Songtexten von Rockbands Verwendung finden.

The present text examines the translation of multiethnic youth language in Jonas Hassen Khemiri’s novel Ett öga rött (One Eye Red). Khemiri’s language is analysed, its function described and compared with the German translation of the book using representative text excerpts. Khemiri’s language is shown to deviate considerably from standard language and should be understood functionally as protest language. Most conspicuous is the continuous even word order after adverbial in the prefield instead of an inversion. Also typical is the use of nouns without articles, wrong genders, or ethnolectal lexemes such as flos (money), keff (bad) etc. Idioms are often used in an incorrect form and word formation is idiosyncratic. Khemiri’s language is characterised as a highly stylised, aesthetic artificial language inspired by multiethnic youth language (Rinkeby Swedish). The translation is typified by grammatically ordinary standard language, whose lexis is striking only for its coarse and youth language lexemes. There are no indications to suggest a German ethnolect and/or an artificial language. The target text is more neutral and lacking in humour, resulting in an impoverishment of the original text. The contrast between multiethnic youth language and standard language is also lost. The translation strategy used can best be described as einbürgernd (domesticating), as the linguistic idiosyncrasies for the most part are translated with grammatically correct standard language. The presumed effect on the reader is classed as inappropriate. Parallels between the German and the Swedish language could have been exploited in the translation without running the risk of appearing odd.
