Enhancing cycling safety in Hamburg via PrioBike

Beheshti-Kashi, Samaneh, Fröhlich, Sven, Ehlent, Ute 02 January 2023 (has links)
Mobility has a vital impact on the quality of life in a city. Yet, traditional modes of car-centric transportation models generate large externalities that must be tackled by cities - such as congestion, noise and air pollution. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in Germany is striving for a mobility transition, making mobility more sustainable and environmentally friendly. The city wants to change the mobility behaviour by strengthening the means of transport that are causing less impact on the environment and climate. By 2030, the goal is to increase the share of cycling, walking and public transport to a total of 80 per cent of all routes travelled. Cycling, which is especially cost- and space-efficient, plays a crucial role here. More specifically, the share of all joumeys made by bike should be increased by 25-30 per cent within this decade. Within the framework of Hamburg's strategy of lntelligent Transport Systems (ITS), the city fosters, develops and conducts ITS-projects that focus, amongst others, on cycling. In order to increase the proportion of cycling, it is essential to promote its attractiveness. A cycling infrastructure that ensures smooth and easy cycling within the city is vital for a competitive alternative to motorised private transport. Furthermore, people enjoy cycling when they feel comfortable and safe [e.g. 3]. The ITS-project PrioBilce-HH follows this approach and addresses both topics: cycling comfort and safety. This abstract focuses on the aspect of safety.

Measuring exposure for cyclists and micro-mobility users

Fyhri, Aslak, Pokorny, Petr, Ellis, Ingunn Opheim, Weber, Christian 03 January 2023 (has links)
Data about bicycle usage is an important input parameter for several purposes. They are used to describe changes towards more sustainable transport, and partly to say something about changes towards more active transport as opposed to passive modes oftransport. Importantly such data are used as the denominator when calculating crash risk: for cyclists. In Norway, as in most countries, these data are captured in several ways today. This is partly done by using data from the national travel behavior survey, partly using figures from stationazy or mobile bicycle counters, and partly using other methods such as manual counts, etc. The technological development has provided several new opportunities to register such travel, in the form of more advanced stationary counters, advanced algorithms that interprets signal data, video recording solutions and app-based measurement systems. At the sam.e time, we see that development in the transport sector also creates new challenges. In just a few years, electric scooters have radically changed the traffic picture in cities and towns in Norway. There is therefore a need for more knowledge about different forms of ways to measure bicycle and micro-mobility use, their strengths and weaknesses, and what kind of strategies the authorities should have to be equipped to meet future changes in the transport field, as exemplified by the recent intlux of e-scooters. The current paper aims to respond to these challenges by answering the following research questions: • What are the relative strengths and weaknesses of different data sources for measuring cycling and micromobility use? • How weil do the different sources function to capture micromobility and to differentiate between traditional cycling and micromobility? • How can the different data sources be used as input for calculating crash risk for various forms of soft mobility (i.e. cycling and micromobility)?

Make It Your Own: Digital Applications for Customized Information in Museums : Conception and Evaluation of an App

Ullmann, Katharina January 2023 (has links)
Visiting a museum is a popular activity for many people. Be it to find out about certain museum objects or to feel entertained. An important contribution to a satisfying museum experience is the information about the objects. On the one hand, the provided information should be about them, but at the same time reflect the interests of the visitor. Since the information presented on information labels is often only rudimentary, visitors can follow human guides or use digital tools that display additional information. The problem, however, that exists despite a wide range of offers, is that the information is designed for the general public and cannot be customized by the visitor. In this way, information is presented that is either not of interest to the visitor or, in the worst case, that the visitor does not understand because prior knowledge is lacking. Even if existing research deals with the presentation of information and the preparation of digital applications, the customizing aspect is often missing. This master thesis shows to what extent information and functions embedded in an app can be customized. A prototype of an app was constructed that, based on an example museum, presents filter options too utput customized information about a museum object. The prototype was tested in a user study by six participants. The participants tested the prototype by processing test tasks and answered an evaluation questionnaire. Three of the six participants also completed a group interview. The goal was to find out to what extent the filters offered reflect the needs of the participants and which functions and aspects are important for customization. The results show that despite the current lack of focus on prior knowledge, filtering based on it is not very effective. In addition, suggestions were made as to how groups could benefit from the more individual use of the app. Future research can build on the achieved results by integrating the proposed functions and testing them in further studies to expand the customization step by step.

APP-baserat lärande i avfallshantering av dentala material : En kvalitativ enkätundersökning med metodutveckling / APP-Based Learning in Dental Waste Management : A Qualitative Survey with Method Development

Karlsson, Anna January 2024 (has links)
Purpose: Investigate whether it is possible to develop a mobile application that educates staff and students in the dental technology profession in waste management of dental materials.   Method: Products utilized in dental laboratories were photographed then edited. Collaborating with an app developer, an application was created with educational materials on waste management. The application included 12 levels, featuring a total of 118 different products, distributed over seven waste types per level. Only the test groups used the application.   A knowledge test of 20 questions divided into two parts was developed: Single Best Answer and Multiple Choice Questions. A review form was developed, with a total of 27 questions.   Two sessions were scheduled with the participants. First session: the knowledge test was carried out to determine the baseline of knowledge, and study material and the APP were distributed. Second session: the test was carried out again to assess knowledge progression, and a review of the exercise was conducted.   Results: The results show worse performance for both test and control groups on the tests after handing over study material and APP. The test results showed no statistically significant difference between the groups.   Conclusion: Neither access to safety data sheets nor mobile application for education in waste management improves knowledge in waste management of dental materials. The developed mobile application was perceived as motivating, easy to understand and visually appealing by the participants. All participants were statistically in agreement that the study’s subject was interesting and had a positive attitude towards game-based learning.

Hauck, Christian 08 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The Android operating system offers, due to the increasing number of available mobile devices based on this system and also the rapidly increasing number of users of such devices, a very good basis for the development of various mobile applications. It can be relevant to every conceivable area of everyday life, especially leisure, but also work to develop an app based on Android. It currently still requires development of the offered mobile applications in the area of mobile event guides. There are numerous applications for trade shows, conferences and festivals, but they differ greatly in their functions and, above all in the presentation of maps and plans. Often, such apps are created based on a framework that allows the app to adapt to different events. The present paper describes the implementation of a conference guide for the International Cartographic Conference 2013 in Dresden. Basis for the implementation is the consideration of methods of orientation and navigation applications at indoor and outdoor areas for pedestrians and on major events. To this end, existing applications from the category large events will be studied. Besides the general features a focus is placed on the cartographic features of such apps. A framework, based on Android, which allows the creation of mobile applications for various large events, will be created as part of the work. This framework is adapted to the International Cartographic Conference 2013 and delivers as a result an application that can be used as a digital conference guide.

Facilitating Behavioral Change among Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome : A Design-Oriented Case Study / Främjande av beteendeförändring bland kvinnor med polycystiskt ovarialsyndrom : En designorienterad fallstudie

Robertsson, Hilda January 2023 (has links)
The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects women or people with female reproductive organs negatively, by irregular periods, difficulties in getting pregnant, and excessive hair growth. The symptoms can be eased by taking on habits of regular physical exercise and a balanced diet. Taking on new habits is however a challenging task. This thesis aims at harnessing the affordances (if any) that the design of gamification in a mobile application for women with PCOS could bring. The theoretical lens of self-determination theory has been used to underpin the design of gamification elements that can engage the users of an app. After creating designs and implementations in the app, evaluations were made with 29 participants through surveys and interviews. The results from the user evaluations show that participants’ thoughts on features and elements differed and that they were interested in them being designed in different ways. Designing an app that allows the user flexibility was desirable, and even viewed as motivational. Another take is that one should be careful in designing elements in a health app that uses comparing elements of gamification, since it can generate negative feelings such as anxiety. In the future, it would be interesting to include more features in the app and let users test it for a longer time to see if that would have a significant impact on the user engagement, and if habits could form for a better well-being.

電子民主與政府APP─評估指標建構初探 / Electronic Democracy and Government Mobile Application (APP) ─ An Exploratory Study of Indicator Construction

Unknown Date (has links)
The expansion of the Internet and the fast development of information communication technologies (ICTs) have changed service deliveries of enterprises and government organizations. Many enterprises change the service model with creating a variety of APPs. Government organizations, meanwhile, provide multiple mobile services in order to maximize the competitive advantage of nations. A novel service model breaks restrictions on time and space, providing the opportunity of direct democracy for the public. Lately, the development of electronic government is entitled to extensive democracy, and electronic government becomes a new communication model. In order to realize the meaning of e-democracy and the development of governments’ online services, this research reviews the literature of electronic democracy. The author use three dimensions, including ‘electronic information’, ‘electronic service and consultation’, and ‘electronic decision making and participation’, to categorize APPs created by central and local governments. Base on the previous findings, this research selects electronic decision making and participation of APPs to construct indicators. The author reviews six types of literatures, including web service quality indicators, electronic government assessment, governmental service quality research, electronic commerce satisfaction, mayor's email-box satisfaction, and Internet resources to establish indicators of governments’ APPs. The framework and contents of indicators are revised by implementing two rounds in-depth interviews with the questionnaire. According to empirical data, this research separate indicators into two dimensions, including System Quality and Citizen Participation & Service Quality. The System Quality has three sub-dimensions, including Visual Design, Ease of Use, and Security & Privacy. Visual Design has nine indicators, such as the accuracy of APPs’ title, the simplicity of APP, etc. Ease of Use has nineteen indicators, such as the response time less than three seconds, the simplicity of APPs’ functions, etc. Security & Privacy has four indicators, such as the authority of being acceptable, proper personal informations, etc. The Citizen Participation & Service Quality has four sub-dimensions, including the Contents’ Quality of Interactions, Usability, Responsiveness, and Efficacy. The Contents’ Quality of Interactions has four indicators, such as the sufficiency of governments’ reply, the accuracy of governments’ reply, etc. Usability has three indicators, such as relative to APPs’ deal of speed than counters, 1999, and the mayor's email-boxes, applying for accounts directly in APP, etc. Responsiveness has six indicators, such as immediately response, courteous reply, etc. Efficacy has three indicators, such as understanding of the petition, customize services, etc. To sum up, indicators of government APPs have two dimensiosns, seven sub-dimensiosns and forty eight indicators. Base on those indicators, and this research further categorizes them into ‘must have’ and ‘good to have’. This framework of indicators is expected not only becoming the reference for government organizations creating APPs in the future but also improving service quality of APPs nowadays. Moreover, it is important that having to strengthen APP’s security and privacy, then governments could open data from citizen complaints and use them to create new value. Future research could explore the disability and security aspects of indicators. Moreover, future research could consider operationalize a part of indicators, and then adopt Delphi and AHP to measure robustly the consistency and weighting of indicators. Finally, the author expects the follow-up studies could conduct questionnaires to realize the fitness for indicators and condition of APP’s development.

Ghenimi Rahab, Nadirah 18 June 2009 (has links)
Some data reveal that retinoid hyposignalling, presumably resulting from decreased bioavailability of retinoid ligands naturally, was shown to result in aging-related synaptic plasticity and long term potentiation (LTP) alterations as well as in aging-related decline of cognitive function. Moreover, genetic, metabolic and dietary evidence has been provided for a defective retinoid metabolism in Alzheimer disease (AD). Thus, key steps of the amyloid production process are under the control of proteins whose expression is positively regulated by RA in vitro. In this context, the aims of this work were to better understand neuro-anatomical and functionnal consequences of retinoid signaling brain hypoactivity. Our experimental method uses two animal models: a Vitamin A deficiency model which induce especially an hypoactivity of retinoid pathway, and an hypothyroid model which was also characterized by an hypoactivity of retinoid pathway. In the fisrt model, two main approch were used : (i) an NMR imaging and spectroscopy approach, (ii) a molecular approach to study expression of retinoid target genes implicated in amyloidogenic process. NMR results showed that VAD induces severe anatomic and metabolic disorders in particular a slowing of brain growth, hippocampus atrophy, and a decrease of NAA/Cr, marker of neuronal density which was observed in cortex, hippocampus and striatum. Molecular results reveal a vitamin A deficiency-related dysregulation of the amyloid pathway in the cortex of rats, which is known to be the first brain area altered by AD development. In this area, 14 weeks of deprived diet induces physiological dysregulation in the modulation of RA target genes leading to an increased amount of ADAM10, BACE and PS1, with some modifications in amyloidogenic pathway but without increased amount of Aß peptides. In hypothyroid model, molecular results suggests that adult onset-hypothyroidism may induce the amyloidogenic pathway of APP processing by increasing activity of ß and ?secretases and levels of amyloid peptides mainly in hippocampus. Together these data argue for the idea that hypoactivity of retinoid signalling which occurs naturally with aging could be a factor participating in accelerating aging and that hypothyroidism that become more prevalent with advancing age, could increase, via a hyposignaling of T3 pathway, the vulnerability of amyloidogenic pathway of APP processing as well as of other clinical symptoms of AD.
