A Study of Modern Automotive Tune-Up Equipment Used in Fort Worth, Texas

The problem with which this investigation was concerned was that of determining the use of modern automotive tune-up equipment as used by the automotive garages in the Fort Worth area. The data for this study were provided by fifteen garages of the Fort Worth area. Of the Fort Worth garages using electronic equipment to perform a tune-up, few appear to have the adequate equipment and few appear to make more use of the equipment. In addition, a deficiency seems evident in the use of the electronic computer in performing tune-ups.

From then on, the car that from the beginning has a relationship of love and hate with the population, is gaining space and the auto industry growing in importance for the industrial development of this country. Since the 1950s, when the government begins the process of developing a genuinely Brazilian automobile industry, several adjustments had to be made for this to happen. In parallel to the development of the automotive industry, developed to the auto parts industry. In the beginning, all the pieces were imported from Europe and the US, to the time when a national auto parts industry develops. The national automotive industry consists of original and independent auto parts suppliers. The first supply the car manufacturers and the last the aftermarket. The investigation begins in automotive History it is developed by aftermarket features and the relationship of suppliers to automakers ends with a multiple case study, that investigates 4 original and independent parts manufacturers. The research method used in this study is the study of multiple case study. The main contribution of the study was to add the independent auto parts supplier in the supply chain structures of the automotive industry presented by Bede (1996) and Scavarda and Hamacher (2011). / A História do automóvel no Brasil teve início por volta de 1890, quando o primeiro veículo importado da Europa, desembarca em solo nacional. A partir de então, o automóvel que desde do início tem uma relação de amor e ódio com a população, vai ganhando espaço e a indústria automobilística crescendo em importância para o desenvolvimento industrial desse país. Desde os anos de 1950, quando o governo inicia o processo de desenvolvimento de uma indústria automobilística genuinamente brasileira, diversos ajustes tiveram de ser feitos para que isso pudesse acontecer. Em paralelo ao desenvolvimento da indústria automobilística, desenvolvia-se a indústria de autopeças. No início, todas as peças eram importas da Europa e dos EUA, até o momento em que uma indústria nacional de autopeças se desenvolve. A indústria nacional de autopeças é formada por fornecedores de autopeças originais e independentes. Os primeiros abastecem as montadoras de automóveis, e os últimos o mercado de reposição. A investigação se inicia na história da indústria automobilística, se desenvolve pelas características do mercado de reposição e o relacionamento dos fornecedores com as montadoras encerra-se com um estudo de caso múltiplo, com 4 fabricantes de autopeças originais e independentes. O método de pesquisa utilizado no presente estudo é o estudo de caso múltiplo e exploratório. A principal contribuição do estudo foi acrescentar o fornecedor de autopeças independente, nas estruturas de cadeia de suprimento da indústria automobilística apresentados por Bedê (1996) e Scavarda e Hamacher (2011).

Currently the company has approximately 400 groups involving about 4000 employees. During the research had been interviewed, managers, union representative and human resources representative. A survey was applied in a random sample of 250 employees. This work was supported by the program of statistics SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science), the data had been treated in a quantitative perspective through a factorial analysis (VARIMAX) in the attempt to reduce the amount of variables and after that it was verified if there was correlation between the classification factors of the respondents of the research (age, time working at the company, level of education and others) and the answered assertive, through a discriminated analysis. The research demonstrated that the workers' influence satisfaction factories are, mainly, the job structural organization, the relationship among the groups' participant, the given autonomy and the possibility to learn new activities. The research also shows up that there is a generalized workers' satisfaction to be acting in this type of work organization, independent of the personal characteristics they have, as age, level of education and others. / A presente pesquisa analisou a rela????o entre a ado????o de um modelo de gest??o participativa e o n??vel de satisfa????o dos trabalhadores de uma empresa automobil??stica da regi??o do ABC Paulista, com trabalhadores organizados em grupos semi-aut??nomos, e a t??cnica organizacional implantada na empresa desde 1996. A empresa conta atualmente com aproximadamente 400 grupos de trabalho, envolvendo por volta de 4000 empregados. Foram realizadas entrevistas com os gerentes das ??reas, representantes das ??reas de recursos humanos e representa????o dos empregados. Foram aplicados question??rios junto a uma amostra aleat??ria composta de 250 funcion??rios da empresa. A analise dos dados foi apoiada no programa de estat??stica SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science), os dados foram tratados em uma perspectiva quantitativa atrav??s de uma an??lise fatorial (VARIMAX) na tentativa de reduzir a quantidade de vari??veis e em seguida foi verificado como as vari??veis se correlacionam com os fatores classificat??rios dos respondentes da pesquisa (idade, tempo de casa e outros) atrav??s de uma an??lise de discriminantes. A pesquisa mostrou que os fatores que influenciam a satisfa????o dos trabalhadores s??o, principalmente, os relacionados com a estrutura????o da tarefa, o relacionamento entre os membros do grupo, a autonomia dada e a possibilidade de aprender novas atividades. All this leads to an adequate risk management - the issue this dissertation seeks to identify: What is the perception of company managers of an auto part distribution net, on the existence and use of internal controls to identify and mitigate risks in the organization they work for? The specific objectives are: a) to identify the existence of a risk management culture; b) to check out, if internal controls are use in risk management); c) to verify, if internal audits are considered as a risk identification and mitigation factor; d) to verify the existence of risk management practices; e) to verify, if the accounting is used as a tool to identify and mitigate risks. The research discloses two hypotheses to solve the problem: one ratifies, that companies formed by the target population use to adopt internal controls and risk management practices in their business conduction; the other denies such assertion. The research was carried out in two stages, the first one a descriptive exploration by means of bibliographic research and the second, a field research with survey. The results obtained allow us to conclude, that the researched officers recognize the existence and use of internal controls to identify and mitigate the risk to which the companies they work for are exposed to. The use of this technology provides functional changes in the corporate architecture information, organizational and business control. The Controllership as a set of activities and functions, aims providing support to business management ensuring the companies business. In this context, the ERP systems are technologies which can change the business processes by imposing its logic to the organizations. This research has investigated which of ERP systems features influence the Controllership Functions, verifying through the literature review and field research the aspects related to demands of management and operations control, focusing on the opportunities to incorporate new management concepts, improvements in decision making processes, changes in the cost structure and qualitative aspects linked to the Controllership Functions. It was performed a literature and field research to give support to study's goal. The large companies of the auto parts industries Sao Paulo State were defined as the population to be surveyed. A questionnaire for the survey was prepared and sent via e-mail, focusing on the Controllership departments of this population. The sample was defined with 40 valid respondents. It was used the statistical techniques of simple deterministic sampling, validation of the questionnaire by applying the coefficient of Cronbach's alpha, factor analysis and chi-square. Besides the statistical analysis, was performed a descriptive analysis of research data. The field research revealed that the perception of the respondents of the sample, the ERP change the Controllership Functions and attends the functions related to operation controls better than management controls. For the management control demands there are improvements to be performed. The ERP system has created opportunities to incorporate new management concepts, the quality of information improvements, better decision making process and reduced activities lead time, showing that the Controllership Functions of the researched companies are dependent and influenced directly or indirectly by the ERP system / O tema Sistemas ERP tem-se apresentado cada vez mais relevante como ferramenta estrat??gica da tecnologia da informa????o. Focusing on the implementation of Ford, in the city of Bahia Camaçari, we analyzed the population of regions host of new industries has benefited from economic growth as a result of the activities of the industrial plants that were attracted by tax benefits. The relevance of this theme emerges from the huge impact that public policies based on tax breaks have caused in Brazilian society, both in industrialized areas, such as the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, as those who have no industrial tradition. Based on authors who have studied this subject and through analysis of socioeconomic data Camaçari, then used to establish that the improvement in the living conditions of the local population was not proportional to the growth of economic activities. Some factors contributing to this situation are the accelerated process of urbanization, inadequate investment in public services, low wages paid by local industries, among others / Esta dissertação teve o objetivo de investigar se programas de incentivos fiscais, adotados por governadores e prefeitos no Brasil, sobretudo nos anos 1990 e 2000, foram capazes de ancorar políticas de desenvolvimento econômico regional. Com o foco na implantação da Ford, na cidade baiana de Camaçari, analisamos se a população de regiões anfitriãs de novas indústrias tem sido beneficiada com o crescimento econômico, fruto das atividades das plantas industriais que foram atraídas por meio de benefícios fiscais. A relevância desse tema emerge do grande impacto que as políticas públicas baseadas na renúncia fiscal têm provocado na sociedade brasileira, tanto nas áreas industrializadas, como a Região Metropolitana de São Paulo, quanto naquelas que não possuem tradição industrial. Baseados em autores que se debruçaram sobre esse assunto e por meio da análise de dados socioeconômicos do município de Camaçari, averiguamos que a melhoria nas condições de vida da população não foi proporcional ao crescimento das atividades econômicas. It was proceeded a review of the concepts of competitive advantage, economic value, the resource-based view and market oligopsony. The method employed was a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive approach, which involved the preparation of semi-structured indepth interviews, transcription and content analysis technique according to Bardin (1977). As a previous step to doing research, it was interviewed four top executives of the major automobile companies established in the country aimed at understanding the competitiveness of the automotive market and its effects on the segment of molds and dies, as well as an indication of the prominent national firms considered segment toolmaker. Further, we interviewed the leaders of the six companies indicated by automobile in order to draw them to focus on the perception that they were addressed, the resources responsible for the differentiation and management of such resources in order to work in a market oligopsony typical supply chain of the automotive industry. As a result, it was observed that the leading companies were those that aligned its resources to the competitive goals of the automotive sector, guided by the quest to reduce costs and time in developing projects for new vehicles. The resources identified as determinants of competitive advantage of these companies were: (a) the technological infrastructure, (b) the team of professionals and (c) the direct action of the owners. Capabilities were cited as resulting from: (a) knowledge in the process of forming (for printing), (a) the ability to setup and upgrade the technological infrastructure, and (c) the management of key people in the organization. The involvement of oligopsony market was not important for differentiation in value creation, but to the appropriation of value created by these companies, which spawned the development of new capabilities: (a) ability to exploit the benefits of seasonal demand, (b) emphasis on the economic and financial management, and (c) policy of reinvesting company's financial results. It was discussed the paradigm of comparison for determining the extent of the competitive advantage of these companies, in view of the internationalization of competition in the segment, and it was identified that the appropriation of value is a function of value creation, as a condition for sustainable enterprises that are in a position of competitive advantage. / Esta dissertação investigou as fontes de vantagem competitiva de firmas brasileiras de fabricação de moldes e estampos que, não obstante a atuação em contexto de mercado de oligopsônio, apresentaram destaque na criação e apropriação de valor com base no desenvolvimento de recursos e capacidades no interior de suas firmas. Procedeu-se a revisão dos conceitos de vantagem competitiva, de valor econômico, da visão baseada em recursos e do mercado de oligopsônio. O método empregado seguiu uma abordagem qualitativa, exploratória e descritiva, o que envolveu a preparação de roteiro semi-estruturado, realização de entrevistas em profundidade, transcrição e análise do conteúdo segundo a técnica de Bardin (1977). Como etapa precedente à realização da pesquisa, foram entrevistados quatro altos executivos das principais empresas automobilísticas instaladas no país visando a compreensão da competitividade no mercado automobilístico e dos seus efeitos sobre o segmento de moldes e estampos, bem como a indicação das firmas nacionais consideradas destacadas no segmento ferramenteiro. Na sequência, foram entrevistados os dirigentes das seis empresas indicadas pelas automobilísticas, visando extrair-lhes a percepção sobre o destaque que lhes foi endereçado, os recursos responsáveis pela diferenciação e a gestão de tais recursos, tendo em vista a atuação num mercado de oligopsônio, típico da cadeia de fornecimento da indústria automobilística. Como resultado, observou-se que as empresas destacadas eram aquelas que alinhavam seus recursos aos objetivos competitivos do setor automobilístico, guiados pela busca de redução de custos e de tempo no desenvolvimento de projetos de novos veículos. Os recursos apontados como determinantes da vantagem competitiva dessas empresas foram: (a) a estrutura tecnológica, (b) a equipe de profissionais e (c) a atuação direta dos proprietários. Como capacidades decorrentes foram citadas: (a) o conhecimento em processo de conformação (no caso de estampos), (a) a habilidade para configuração e atualização da estrutura tecnológica e, (c) a gestão das pessoas chaves na organização. A atuação em mercado de oligopsônio não se mostrou relevante para a diferenciação na geração de valor, mas para a apropriação do valor criado por essas empresas, o que desencadeou o desenvolvimento de novas capacidades: (a) habilidade para exploração de vantagens decorrentes da sazonalidade da demanda, (b) ênfase sobre a gestão econômicofinanceira e, (c) política de reinvestimento dos resultados financeiros da empresa. Discutiu-se o paradigma de comparação para determinação do alcance da vantagem competitiva dessas empresas, tendo em vista a internacionalização da competição do segmento, e identificou-se que a apropriação de valor é uma função da criação de valor, como condição para sustentabilidade das empresas que se encontram na posição de vantagem competitiva.

Supply chain management: a human resources perspective in a South African automotive manufacturing organisation

This study attempts to examine and comprehend the connection between human resources management (HMR) practices and effective supply chain management (SCM) implementation by means of a conceptual framework and construct developed through a literature study and previous studies conducted in this area. The focus of this study was to determine whether a South African automotive manufacturer, implements identified human resources practices and to establish to what extent these practices enhance effective supply chain management implementation. A quantitative research approach was used to conduct this study. A census survey was used to collect data. Electronic data was collected using a monkey survey, and paperbased questionnaires were collected by the researcher at the participating organisation. Seven hypotheses were formulated to guide this study. The data analysis of this research was done for the purpose of testing these hypotheses and achieving the empirical research objectives. The findings from descriptive statistical analysis summarised the strong HR practices which facilitate the implementation of effective supply chain management in the participating automotive manufacturing organisation, and also focused on weak HR practices which might hinder the implementation of effective supply chain management. Some areas in which improvement is possible were identified. By taking into account that this study focused on one leading South African automotive manufacturer, further research is recommended with an expansive scope of South African automotive manufacturing organisations. The study aimed to provide recommendations on the adoption of human resource management practices for the purpose of facilitating the implementation of an effective supply chain management. It is of crucial value for the participating South African automotive manufacturing organisation to apply the study’s findings (The South African manufacturer should revise its compensation practices by ensuring that compensation is comparable to what other employees in similar jobs elsewhere are being paid, and it should also provide a sociable and transparent working environment to its workers). / Business Management / M. This study attempts to examine and comprehend the connection between human resources management (HMR) practices and effective supply chain management (SCM) implementation by means of a conceptual framework and construct developed through a literature study and previous studies conducted in this area. The focus of this study was to determine whether a South African automotive manufacturer, implements identified human resources practices and to establish to what extent these practices enhance effective supply chain management implementation. A quantitative research approach was used to conduct this study. A census survey was used to collect data. Electronic data was collected using a monkey survey, and paper-based questionnaires were collected by the researcher at the participating organisation. Seven hypotheses were formulated to guide this study. The data analysis of this research was done for the purpose of testing these hypotheses and achieving the empirical research objectives. The findings from descriptive statistical analysis summarised the strong HR practices which facilitate the implementation of effective supply chain management in the participating automotive manufacturing organisation, and also focused on weak HR practices which might hinder the implementation of effective supply chain management. Some areas in which improvement is possible were identified. By taking into account that this study focused on one leading South African automotive manufacturer, further research is recommended with an expansive scope of South African automotive manufacturing organisations. The study aimed to provide recommendations on the adoption of human resource management practices for the purpose of facilitating the implementation of an effective supply chain management. It is of crucial value for the participating South African automotive manufacturing organisation to apply the study’s findings (The South African manufacturer should revise its compensation practices by ensuring that compensation is comparable to what other employees in similar jobs elsewhere are being paid, and it should also provide a sociable and transparent working environment to its workers). / Business Management / M.
