Methodology for the evaluation of sizing of grid-connected photovoltaic systems.

Guido Javier Rostegui Aguilar 22 August 2018 (has links)
This work presents the evaluation of the sizing of grid-connected photovoltaic systems by means of energy costs indicators; several simulations of power generation for photovoltaic systems with different configurations and sizes were carried out to verify the applicability of the proposed method to any system. By using the indicators it is sought to determine a suitable configuration of photovoltaic modules within the system, that is, the spacing between rows of modules, their tilt angle, the number of strings and the number of modules per string, considering the impact that these variables have on system power generation. In order to evaluate this impact, three indicators are used, namely the cost of the generated energy, understood as the cost of installing a photovoltaic system (including cost of equipment, structures, electrical components, labor, profit of the installer, etc.) divided by the amount of energy that the system is able to deliver to the grid in the first year of operation, the Simple Levelized Cost of Energy (sLCOE) and the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) calculated by the Fixed Charge Rate (FCR) method. The indicators are presented in values in USD/kWh. The simulations were carried out in two locations using commercially available equipment, for fixed-tilt and single axis tracker systems. The software used to perform the simulations was the SAM, free software developed by NREL for sizing and calculation of photovoltaic systems.

January 2019 (has links)
Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Business Administration 2019

From the principles of sport psychology into the world of counseling : About sportpschology consultants and its application for career counsellours

Kratz, Amelie, Dozzi, Marika January 2011 (has links)
This study examines how sport psychology consultants are working and whether their client work are methods or models which may be applicable in career counselling. The research questions that are answered in this paper are about the sport psychology consultant’s work and what differences there are in the two professional groups. And to see if certain parts of the advisers' work can be applicable or be complementary to the study and career counsellors models. The method chosen for the research was qualitative interviewing. The results that emerged indicated that they worked in a similar manner in the dialogue with the client, the primary approach, but one difference was that counsellors often work with applicants who are motivated to change and that they work with process and had more time for each client. We think that it’s possible for study and careers advisors could use parts from the advisors' approach to enhance and expand its own developed models and to renew their working tools. The hypothesis that the two professional groups worked similarly matched and that it is possible to take parts from working sued.

Multi-objective Optimization of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Powertrain Families considering Variable Drive Cycles and User Types over the Vehicle Lifecycle

Al Hanif, S. Ehtesham 02 October 2015 (has links)
Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicle (PHEV) technology has the potential to reduce operational costs, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and gasoline consumption in the transportation market. However, the net benefits of using a PHEV depend critically on several aspects, such as individual travel patterns, vehicle powertrain design and battery technology. To examine these effects, a multi-objective optimization model was developed integrating vehicle physics simulations through a Matlab/Simulink model, battery durability, and Canadian driving survey data. Moreover, all the drivetrains are controlled implicitly by the ADVISOR powertrain simulation and analysis tool. The simulated model identifies Pareto optimal vehicle powertrain configurations using a multi-objective Pareto front pursuing genetic algorithm by varying combinations of powertrain components and allocation of vehicles to consumers for the least operational cost, and powertrain cost under various driving assumptions. A sensitivity analysis over the foremost cost parameters is included in determining the robustness of the optimized solution of the simulated model in the presence of uncertainty. Here, a comparative study is also established between conventional and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) to PHEVs with equivalent optimized solutions, size and performance (similar to Toyota Prius) under both the urban and highway driving environments. In addition, breakeven point analysis is carried out that indicates PHEV lifecycle cost must fall within a few percent of CVs or HEVs to become both the environmentally friendly and cost-effective transportation solutions. Finally, PHEV classes (a platform with multiple powertrain architectures) are optimized taking into account consumer diversity over various classes of light-duty vehicle to investigate consumer-appropriate architectures and manufacturer opportunities for vehicle fleet development utilizing simplified techno-financial analysis. / Graduate / 0540 / 0548 / ehtesham@uvic.ca

Fuel economy modeling of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles, and coastdown study

Ates, Murat 03 September 2009 (has links)
Development of a fuel economy model for light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles is part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s “Estimating Texas Motor Vehicle Operating Costs” project. A literature review for models that could be used to predict the fuel economy of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles resulted in selection of coastdown coefficients to simulate the combined effects of aerodynamic drag and tire rolling resistance. For light-duty vehicles, advantage can be taken of the modeling data provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for adjusting chassis dynamometers to allow accurate determination of emissions and fuel economy so that compliance with emissions standards and Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations can be assessed. Initially, EPA provided vehicle-specific data that were relevant to a physics-based model of the forces at the tire-road interface. Due to some limitations of these model parameters, EPA now provides three vehicle-specific coefficients obtained from vehicle coastdown data. These coefficients can be related back to the original physics-based model of the forces at the tire-road interface, but not in a manner that allows the original modeling parameters to be extracted from the coastdown coefficients. Nevertheless, as long as the operation of a light-duty vehicle does not involve extreme acceleration or deceleration transients, the coefficients available from the EPA can be used to accurately predict fuel economy. Manufacturers of heavy-duty vehicles are not required to meet any sort of CAFE standards, and the engines used in heavy-duty vehicles, rather than the vehicles themselves, are tested (using an engine dynamometer) to determine compliance with emissions standards. Therefore, EPA provides no data that could be useful for predicting the fuel economy of heavy-duty vehicles. Therefore, it is necessary to perform heavyduty coastdown tests in order to predict fuel economy, and use these tests to develop vehicle-specific coefficients for the force at the tire-road interface. Given these coefficients, the fuel economy of a heavy-duty vehicle can be calculated for any driving schedule. The heavy-duty vehicle model developed for this project is limited to pre-2007 calendar year heavy-duty vehicles due to the adverse effects of emissions components that were necessary to comply with emissions standards that went into effect January 2007. / text

Moraru, Natalia, Pavlenko, Anna January 2014 (has links)

Meta-modelling and sensitivity analysis of a complex mechanistic model (FLORSYS) of cropping system effects on ecosystem services and disservices of weeds

Colas, Floriane 26 March 2018 (has links)
The main threat to agricultural crops are weeds with herbicides being the primary cropping management practice. Due to the negative impact of herbicides on health and environment, their use must be reduced. To replace herbicides, numerous cropping practices need to be implemented. This makes weed management more complicated and, together with necessity of scheduling operations at long-term and the multiplicity of cropping system impacts, explains why models are so useful for designing innovative cropping systems. The aim of this thesis was to develop a Decision Support System (DSS) intended for crop advisors to help design cropping systems that are less dependent on herbicides. Our approach consisted in identifying the structure of the DSS in interaction with future users while using an existing research model for the biophysical content of the tool. The research model, FLORSYS, is a mechanistic model of a “virtual field” simulating the weed flora dynamics from both cropping systems and pedoclimatic conditions. As output, it provides weed impact indicators, both for crop production and ecosystem services. This work was achieved via three steps: (1) increasing the speed of FLORSYS simulations by metamodelling, via polynomial chaos extension, the slowest submodel, i.e. the radiation interception. This submodel is based on a 3D representation of each plant of the crop:weed canopy where the transfer and interception of the radiation is computed at a voxel (3D pixel) scale. (2) The identification of the most influential cropping practices on weed impacts indicators via datamining on a wide range of simulated cropping systems with FLORSYS. To widen the range of cropping systems, random cropping systems were added to the study. Random forest allowed the construction of charts of the most important cropping practices contingent on different objectives; classification and regression trees gave the optimal combinations of practices leading to those objectives. (3) Simultaneously, the co-development of the structure of the DSS with future users was done via surveys and workshops to design cropping systems. These interactions aimed at defining which questions should be answered with the DSS, which inputs and outputs, and with which format, should be used. In step (1), the simulation time of the voxelised FLORSYS and the FLORSYS metamodelled at the scale of the plant highlighted the precision/speed trade-off of the model. The metamodel is faster for agricultural practices requiring precise knowledge of the position and volume of plants. In other cases, decreasing the precision by using the voxelized FLORSYS with an increased voxel size is much faster. Step (2) shows no general conflict between crop protection and ecosystem service indicators. The conservation of both crop protection and ecosystem services is thus possible, except for bee food offer. To reduce weed impacts on production, tillage, especially in summer, and herbicide use are the main cropping techniques. In step (3) two use cases were identified: (1st) the redesign of a cropping system requires a synthetic tool, based on meta-decision rules (e.g. rotating winter and spring crops, ploughing once every three years); (2nd) adjusting cropping practices requires a detailed tool, with detailed inputs on the cropping system. The synthetic DSS is composed of charts of the most important cropping system practices, of decision trees, and an emulator of FLORSYS based on random forests. Its capacity to predict known facts makes it an essential discussion medium for cropping system design workshops, particularly to suggest the outlines of multi-performant cropping systems. The detailed DSS consists of a pre-parameterized version of FLORSYS for different regions, to allow the fine tuning of cropping systems to constraints and objectives of farmers.

Os saberes de orientação dos professores formadores: desafios para ações tutoriais emancipatórias / The Advising Knowledge of the Superviosing Teachers: Chalenges to the tutoring actions towards emancipation

Maria Antonia Ramos de Azevedo 06 May 2009 (has links)
Late research on teacher education processes has highlighted the importance of the education of the teacher educators. The present research was focused on the advising knowledge (expertise) the advisor has to develop and use about such processes, to supervise efficiently the trainee teachers. The field work aimed to survey such expertise in Teaching Practice and Supervisoned Teaching Training courses, taught in Teacher in Chemistry Curriculum at a University in Southern Brazil. Four advisors were studied using qualitative methodology (questionnaires, single and group interviews, and documental analysis). Interpretation of results from the perspective of present day knowledge of this subject allowed to identify five tutoring expertise components: a) conversational and sympathetic; b) Self-learning and selforganizing; c) cooperational action; d) technical, scientific and pedagogical knowledge as regarded to the practicing area; and e) those related to the theoretical and practical processes of teaching. Regarding the advisors studied, it was possible to identify the exercise of the conversational and sympathetic components; the self-learning and self organizing components. However, the actions related to the cooperational action, to the technical, scientific and pedagogical knowledge as regarded to the practicing area and those related to the theoretical and practical processes of teaching need to be improved, as well as a better collaboration between the university and the schools that accept the students during the trainee period. It was possible to conclude that strategies that can assure the full exercise of advisors are needed. The full exercise implies a reflexion among advisors, trainees and school teachers towards the a new meaning of training conditions in such a way that the trainee period can develop autonomy in the trainees to adapt their knowledge to the diversity of contexts each school represent. Therefore, a new paradigm has to be stated, and that the study of the advisor expertise components has a great potential to better qualify the performance of the tutorial practice of the advisors.

Ensinar a escrever na universidade: a orientação de trabalhos de conclusão de curso em questão / Teach writing at the university : the orientation course conclusion work in question

Mical de Melo Marcelino 16 November 2015 (has links)
This thesis is written of a place in which defends that survey should be at the bunt of teachers training, not only as a pragmatic instrument for a solution of practical troubles, but how a tool to training scientific spirit (BACHELARD, 1996), which relates with a questioning posture not only about in a particular reality that can be taken as an investigation object but also about of scientific productions deriving of University. In summary, the thesis is built with order to find answers to an orientation of academic work. Thus, the first objective is investigate the possibility to find some correlation between nature of carried interventions by a supervisor in versions of final work r in Pedagogy graduation and beginning of a scientific spirit, so that one people became able to transform institutional problems in an act performative with consequences for himself and her community. Therefore, hypothesize to put the student in a continuity relation responsibly the desire can be a big challenge for give an orientation. The corpus of analyze have a material made during the period of preparation of Final Work from two people, students on Pedagogy course in a public university of countrys interior. These are materials: text versions produced by students, interventions made by tutor in students text, emails exchanged between the tutor and students, and messages by chats conversation. In theory of speech as social bond of Lacan, its possible conclude as to teach a write an academic text and lead a student on way of a research, when desired about the advisor teacher a double handling: (a) Act in the same perspective of University Discourse, which means that is guiding the work to teach your student, part of a new university generation, must be in way to say the itself science, which relates with articulating about your intelligence balanced in an academic community; and (b) Act in the same perspective of the Analytic Discourse, which relates paradoxically with interruption of stabilized knowledge, causing the Saber (as an agent), fissures where the student can find opportunities to produce small landslides, namely Products marked by creativity.
