Third-party anger and being moved / an appraisal approach to moral emotionsLandmann, Helen 08 May 2017 (has links)
Moral and immoral behavior can elicit strong emotions. For instance, people can get outraged when they witness unfair behavior (i.e., they experience third-party anger) and they can be intensely moved and overwhelmed by exceptional helpfulness (i.e., they experience feelings of being moved). Using these feelings of third-party anger and being moved as examples, this dissertation set out to clarify how morality and emotions are related. Specifically, the role of outcomes and norms for emotional reactions and behavioral consequences were investigated within six empirical studies. Results indicate that third-party anger and feelings of being moved are counterparts: whereas witnessing behavior that violates norms (e.g., unfairness or disrespect) elicits anger, witnessing behavior that surpasses norms (e.g., exceptional helpfulness or outstanding achievement) elicits feelings of being moved. These emotional episodes seem to be highly relevant for social life as they were associated with punishment decisions, voting intentions and voluntary work. Explaining the elicitation of these emotions was improved when expanding established appraisal assessment methods. Taken together, these findings provide a framework for applying appraisal research to moral emotions and contribute to identifying links between moral principles and emotions. In addition, they point to practical implications concerning anger-induction through the media and the role of being moved in persuasion processes.

Identification of aggression of junior primary learnersBudhal, Richi 11 1900 (has links)
Identification of aggression in Junior Primary school learners often becomes a difficult task due to the lack of appropriate measuring instruments. The assessment instruments used presently are unable to identify the subtypes of aggression. In order to address this limitation in the field of aggression, the present investigation was undertaken.
A literature study was done where the concept aggression was defined and the relationship and differences between the subtypes of aggression (physical, verbal, reactive and proactive aggression) were examined. The factors that relate to aggression, namely, biological, personality, environmental and social, parental influence, frustration and media influences were identified. A reliable measuring instrument was developed to identify the four main subtypes of aggression in junior primary learners.
The results of the empirical investigation indicated that there were significant positive correlations between the subtypes of aggression. Gender and intellectual potential do not appear to have a significant bearing on childhood aggression.
The educational implications of the findings are discussed and guidelines regarding treatment of childhood aggression are given for both educators and parents. / Education Studies / M.Ed.

Humanity's rejection of God, the creator, according to Romans 1:18-32Remezov, Anatoly 01 January 2002 (has links)
The author of dissertation considers that dependence of behavior of people on their attitude toward God the Creator is perhaps the first and the most important topic that comes to mind during the study of the present passage of the most fundamental Paul's epistle. We believe it is necessary to explore "false foundations" as we see as Paul opposes to them his ideology -
ideology of worship to God the Creator. We affirm that Paul sees the main reason of immoral behavior in such area of man's activity as thinking that, in its tum, denies the Creator of every living thing of Earth and because of its incapability to rule over human passions is forced to look for an ideological basis for its acts.
This thesis has also practical meaning because it demonstrates Paul's methodology of disproval of false theories of that time revealing their illogicality and senselessness. / Biblical and Ancient studies / M. Th (New Testament)

Spirituality and depression: a qualitative approachRobertson, Alan Charles 30 November 2006 (has links)
Spirituality is a neglected dimension in psychology, but has recently been growing in importance. Depression is a widespread phenomenon, worldwide, although presenting differently in different cultures, including South Africa. The aim of this study was to give an opportunity to those who have experienced spirituality and depression to voice their experiences in their respective contexts.
The ontological framework was postmodernism and the guiding epistemology was social constructionism. Qualitative research was the method of research selected, because it suited the aims of the research. The specific method of analysis was a "categorical content analysis". In depth interviews with eight participants from various faith backgrounds were conducted. The participants' stories were interpreted by the researcher in the form of themes. Recurring and pertinent themes were compared and discussed with other voices in the field, such as the literature and societal and cultural discourses.
The study facilitated rich, detailed and complex descriptions of people's experience of spirituality and depression. The researcher hopes the voice of this research will lead to new understandings of these phenomena in a South African context. / Psychology / D. Litt. et Phil. (Psychology)

Integrating a girl-child orphaned by aids in a reconstituted family: pastoral and other challengesMutasa, Gertrude Pazvichainda Stembile 01 1900 (has links)
Five years ago at the age of 14, Rutendo Chaibva was double-orphaned by AIDS. A "Family Post Bereavement Property and Responsibilities Disbursement Committee" assigned her uncle Eric Gara as "replacement parent". Rutendo and her " replacement mother" Gerlinda were co-participants in the Participatory Action Research Study. It started in a therapeutic relationship after the family experienced some difficulties in integrating Rutendo into the reconstituted family. Both the therapy and research conversations explored and identified several pastoral and other challenges that militated against the integration process. Rutendo and Gerlinda's road was littered with, among others, minefields of silence and tears, secrecy, multiple losses, unresolved bereavement, unfinished business, anger, fear, and groping for Christian fellowship. It was concluded that personal, family, pastoral and other challenges, and, HIV/AIDS related complexities had militated against the integration process. At the end, Rutendo and Gerlinda acknowledged that therapy and the research processes had impacted positively on the integration process that improved significantly. / Practical Theology / M. Div.
Text in Afrikaans / The aim of this study was to determine the value of Gestalt Play Therapy with the aggressive child in middle childhood. Literature regarding the different etiological theories on aggression, as well as the physical, cognitive, emotional, social and moral development of the aggressive child in his middle childhood was explored. The main concepts in Gestalt Play Therapy were discussed, followed by an outline of an intervention programme with the aggressive child in middle childhood in order to set objectives and establish a structure for the case study. The empirical part of the study was divided into a qualitative component consisting of the case study and unstructured interviews with the parent and teacher of the participant, while the participant's level of aggression before and after intervention was determined quantitatively by means of the Aggression Questionnaire of Buss and Perry. Analysis of the results showed a reduction in the level of anger, verbal and physical aggression and hostility of the participant. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Spelterapie)

Psycho-educational guidelines for the use of music in a group anger management programme for children in residential care in GautengDe Villiers, Belinda 11 1900 (has links)
This study explored the utilisation of a music anger management technique as an effective therapeutic aid in addressing the problems that children in residential care have in managing and expressing their anger.
A literature review was conducted which provided evidence that music can be a helpful tool in teaching children appropriate ways to manage their anger. An empirical study was conducted and five participants were chosen through a sampling process. Background information of the five participants was obtained and data analyses were presented from the data gathered in the pre- and post-assessments processes before and after the implementation of the music anger management technique. The data that gave rise to several empirical findings were then reduced.
From the empirical study, it can be concluded that the music anger management technique can be used effectively to improve inappropriate anger management. Getting firsthand experience of the implementation of the music anger management technique led me to derive psycho-educational guidelines, which can assist the educational psychologist in using the music anger management technique in addressing unmanaged anger in children in residential care. / Further Teacher Education / M.Ed.
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Conflict is an integral part of relationships in the workplace. This study supports the pluralistic view that states that people with different values, views and aims come to the workplace and therefore conflict can be expected. This assumption puts challenges to any business to manage conflict constructively
and to keep it within controllable levels.
The study was done amongst team leaders on five table grape export farms in the vicinity of Piketberg. It showed that increased conflict is a clear indication of deficiencies on management level regarding skills and the execution of management tasks. Team leaders with inadequate or no management or technical training find it
extremely difficult to cope with conflict assertively. The change in the composition of the workforce over a period of a couple of years to
comprise of a majority Xhosa speaking workers has brought unmanageable challenges, even to senior team leaders. Their limited ability to communicate and to give clear instructions to people of an unknown language and culture is stretch to the edge and often leads to serious conflict. It poses a number of challenges to companies to keep a positive atmosphere for
conflict resolution and to equip base line management to deal successful with
conflict. The following themes will need urgent attention:
• The acknowledgement and management of diversity in the workplace;
• The development of a positive organisational culture and values;
• Skills training and the development of self image;
• The setting up of communication channels and participation of workers in
management.
• Erkenning en bestuur van diversiteit in die werksplek;
• Ontwikkeling van ʼn positiewe organisasie-kultuur en –waardes;
• Vaardigheidsopleiding en selfbeeldontwikkeling;
• Skep van kommunikasie-kanale en werkersinspraak by bestuur.

This dissertation addresses the representation of fury in Jean-Baptiste Lully and Philippe Quinault’s 1685 opera, Roland. It seeks to define the rhetorical means through which fury is conveyed on the classical stage of the second half of the XVIIth century, whether they be found in the music, text or staging. The first chapter considers the mythological figures of fury in a historical perspective, from ancient origins to the famous Orlando furioso and its numerous reinterpretations in the French dramatic repertoire, therefore gathering the basis of the topic of fury. This section also addresses the development of the aesthetics of fury, and its relation to the sublime ideal of classical expression.
Guided by the idea of performance and of its effects on the audience, the second chapter studies Roland’s wrath in a rhetorical perspective. Following the traditional rhetorical divisions – inventio, dispositio, elocutio and actio –, the study of this scene shows that dynamics of contrast and balance between strength and softness lie at the core of the rhetoric of disturbance which conducts the representation of fury.

Laurin, Mélissa 04 1900 (has links)
Despite efforts to reduce the prevalence of childhood maltreatment, it is known to be associated with a variety of physical and mental health difficulties, including the manifestation of aggression. Emotional and behavioral reactivity, including anger, fear and avoidance, is proposed as a mechanism to explain the relationship uniting maltreatment and aggression. Four objectives are pursued to this end: to examine the relationship found between (1) maltreatment and aggression, (2) maltreatment and anger, fear and avoidance, (3) anger, fear and avoidance and aggression and (4) to formally test the mediator and moderator role of anger, fear and avoidance in this relationship. Data from 160 men aged between 18 and 35 and who were exposed or unexposed to maltreatment were compiled through questionnaires and a social provocation task measuring the facial expressions of anger and fear as well as avoidance behaviors. Results suggest that maltreatment experiences and avoidance behaviors are associated with aggression. Maltreatment experiences are however not linked to anger, fear and avoidance. While the results suggest that these indicators have no mediator roles in the relationship between maltreatment and aggression, responsiveness to anger and avoidance would magnify this relationship. Thus, results suggest that maltreatment experiences and the intensity of emotional and behavioral reactivity should be taken into account in interventions in order to target those most at risk of using aggression.
