"LET THE FEAST OF FOOLS BEGIN, BATMAN!": THE TRADITIONAL AND GOTHIC CARNIVALESQUES IN THE SOUND DESIGN OF THE BATMAN: ARKHAM VIDEO GAMES

Sharp, Weston Taylor 01 May 2017 (has links)
This paper intends to study carnivalesque elements in the music and sound design of the Batman: Arkham video game franchise. This will be done by examining the ontology of the Batman mythos through the lens of carnivalesque social theory related to the European-American carnival as articulated by Bakhtin and Rabelais. Two expressions of the carnivalesque, the traditional and the Gothic, can be seen and heard in the Arkham video games. These two carnivalesques are essential to understanding both the games themselves and the Batman mythos as a whole. The music and sound design related to selected in-game locales and characters of the Arkham franchise will be studied and linked to the carnivalesque ontology of Batman as an American icon. This study will support the hypothesis that the European-American carnivalesque still plays a literal and figurative role in twenty-first century American society through such icons as Batman.

This dissertation goal is to analyze continuity in long duration serial narratives, specifically super-hero Comic books. Before continuity, we studied how the different serial models needs continuity to differentiate e realized how Comics changed when they adopted different serial models along its history. After that, we proposed the dismemberment of continuity in two different concepts. The first is the relation of logic necessity between two stories, in which one can only comprehend the first with knowledge of the second. The second is the concept of canon, which comprises the validity of one story in relation with the complete corpus of stories comprised in that particular fictional universe. To study how the canon can be modified, first we need to comprehend how authorship works in the comic’s field. This is needed to explain how certain authors have sufficient influence to defend their ideas and other authors do not. The management of the publisher mediates this authorship over this canon, anchored in the figure of the editor. We defend that his management can also be an authorship. All of this gave us grounding to analyze the first two phases of the Grant Morrison run on Batman between 2006 and 2011. In this run the Scottish writer recanonized some of the character adventures from the 1950 e 1960.

"It's What You Do That Defines You": Batman as Moral Philosopher

Johnson, Vilja Olivia 14 March 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In 2008, Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight became the most commercially successful comic book adaptation to date. His film, which highlights the humanity and fallibility of Batman, builds on a long character history while also functioning as an individual work. Nolan's depiction of Batman, which follows a long progression towards postmodernism in graphic novel versions of the character, is just one of multiple filmic superhero representations in recent years to depict a darker side of the "superhero" mythos. These films highlight the humanity and fallibility of these heroic figures and place their actions under scrutiny. In Nolan's two Batman films, this approach allows the central character to reflect the moral complexity of postmodern society. As a result of his humanity, Batman must sometimes choose between two negative outcomes; as he does so, he places various moral systems under pressure and tests them. When Batman makes decisions, he must discard some values in favor of others, and in the process, he reveals his personal priorities. Through the decisions he makes in critical moments in the films, Nolan's Batman acts against "traditional" Batman archetypes which suggest that the hero's actions consistently adhere to one of the following principles: a lust for revenge, a desire to prevent future harm, or a vow not to kill. What eventually emerges as Batman's guiding principle in these latest films is not an ethical system per se, but rather a simple desire to thwart the goals of his enemies. Through this oppositional morality, Batman has the moral flexibility to avoid the dangerous ethical extremes of his enemies. This approach to crime also places the superhero's morality in the hands of his enemies, leading Batman to make troubling decisions as he attempts to stop the villains. Because Batman follows no single moral code consistently, the only way he ultimately differentiates himself from the villains of Gotham is through his belief in the city's potential for good, a belief which all of his enemies have abandoned.

A mulher e a mulher-maravilha: uma questão de história, discurso e poder (1941 a 2002) / The woman and Wonder Woman: a matter of history, discourse and power (1941 to 2002)

Chacon, Beatriz da Costa Pan 22 July 2010 (has links)
This MA dissertation investigates the female presence, representation and significance in action comic books as heroes. The focus will be in Wonder Woman since 1941 to 2002. Analysing and comparing her character with two others big male characters from the same origin country, time and publishing company, Superman and Batman, we try to understand, the different levels of power between them and the ways that Wonder Woman to went through. These differences will be analysed inside and outside of the comics itself. Besides, this analysis is concerned on female evolution at the same period that Wonder Woman was created to the present. Our propose is to relate both worlds, the comic books and our world, and their mutual influences as well. These aspects are connected with the intention to provide and increase the historiography studies on a female history and also to rescue the female presence in history. The analysis has a special focus about the treatment applied to Wonder Woman by the cultural industry in Brazil. Equally important to this propose is the aspect about the last forty years (or near by) we have the process of global issues. A infinite discussion between global and worldwide matters but more than this, the signs, factors and structure from a new planetary arrangement in economy, politics and cultural aspects. The global process and the rescue of a female history are events almost contemporary. And in this work we will try to show questions to help us to understand both phenomenon because they are perfectly lynked with the analysis we will try to do here. Plus we could link with another significant part of this study which is the levels of the power.

Static, Yet Fluctuating: The Evolution of Batman and His Audiences

Dantzler, Perry Dupre 01 December 2009 (has links)
The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history.

Batman: En musikalisk berättelse : En analys av filmerna Batman: The Movie, Batman och The Dark Knight

Bohlin, Benjamin January 2017 (has links)

Rekommenderade Livscykelplaner för övergångskonstruktioner : En utvärdering av BaTMan data / Recommended Life-Cycle Plans for bridge expansion joints : An evaluation of BaTMan data

Srba, Martin January 2016 (has links)
This study aims to develop recommended Life-Cycle Plans for bridge expansion joints which in the future can be used for Life-Cycle Cost analysis to achieve a higher degree of certainty. The degradation of expansion joints can be roughly divided into two categories, user-related degradation and degradation due to climatic conditions. In the study, the influence of annual average daily traffic and climate zones on the expansion joint will be studied by evaluating historically conducted maintenance actions related to the Swedish Transport Administrations (Trafikverket) bridge management system BaTMan. Regression analysis and survival analyzes were performed for the most common actions. The results show that replacement of the strip seal and the expansion joint is the most commonly performed maintenance measures and occurs on average after 25 and 33 years. From the analyzes it was deduced that the traffic intensity is a factor that directly affects the degradation and therefore also the repair and replacement of the expansion joint, likely is also that a large part of the degradation is due to the wear of heavy vehicles. The climate also seems to have an impact on the lifetime of the expansion joint as well as the strip seal. Based on the results, three Life-Cycle Plans was recommended. These Life-Cycle Plans can be used for future Life-Cycle Cost calculations but also to support bridge managers when comparing different maintenance strategies during the operational phase.
