Previous issue date: 2011-08-18 / This work explores the meaning of the expression Banality of Evil, coined by Hannah Arendt in her investigation about Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem. It intends to question its meaning to the logistics of extermination in the Holocaust. Investigates on the one hand, aspects of a moral collapse about our common understandings about the problem of evil, and by the other, the context of bureaucracy that propitiated the novelty of this new form of evil by its singular lack of roots as well as political and moral implications in relation to individual responsibility. Through the conceptual analysis of the problem of evil, along with a series of mismatches in the reasons for doing evil, we propose an interpretation of the meaning of the Banality of Evil.

The Framing of Evil in Oppressive Systems : Barbara, Phoenix, and Transit by Christian PetzoldAschenbrenner, Anna January 2022 (has links)
The present study aims to create a deeper understanding of the cinematic representation of “evil”. Therefore, a special focus lies on contemporary historical fiction films whose stories are set in totalitarian systems with direct or indirect references to German history. This is interesting as the depiction in films influences the viewer's perspective and understanding of history. While many film narratives have very stereotypical imaginations of good and evil, there are also films that use a more observational perspective on the social dynamics that align with specific situations rather than address villains. As one of the main representatives of the Berlin School, Christian Petzold adopts such an observational perspective in his thematic trilogy “Love in the Times of Oppressive Systems”(Barbara, Phoenix, and Transit). In the three independent stories, he deals with the relationship between the male and female protagonists in different stages of oppression in German society, whereby the power structures in the oppressive systems influence human interactions and social situations of everyday life. Using these films as examples, I will look at the framing of evil in totalitarian systems. For this purpose, I will examine the characters and their constellations and individual and general threats, and their motivations for actions as they are played out in these film narratives by Petzold on a cinematographic and thematic level. By referring to Hannah Arendt's conceptualization of evil, the thesis accounts for the representation of “evil” as a multidimensional phenomenon, and how it resonates in the cinematography and historical imagination of Petzold’s films.

Hannah Arendt e a abrangência do conceito de Banalidade do MalKelson, Ruth 27 October 2011 (has links)

Previous issue date: 2011-10-27 / This dissertation intends to enlarge the scope of the concept Banality of Evil, a term
coined by Hannah Arendt to qualify an Evil that had not yet been detected as a particular form
and that she had observed in the Nazi Adolph Eichmann during his trial in Jerusalem in 1962.
She called it an Evil without roots, which is like a fungus in the surface. She found it in a nonperson,
in someone that doesn t think , that doesn t perform the dialogue me-with-myself
and acts in heteronomy, under an external command to which it obeys without assuming
personal responsibility for its moral consequences. This concept helps to elucidate the way
totalitarianisms of the modern era acts and the attitude of those that only follow orders ,
without considering the monstrosities that they can embed. The first condition for this new
form of Evil was man s preceding transformation in a pure animal laborans, dedicated nearly
exclusively to his survival as a species. Transformed in a thing, as a mean and not an end in
itself, man acquired the condition of superficiality from which it could derive the logic of
extermination. The second condition was the destruction of the sacredness of man in modern
times. With the death of God, he was transformed into a simple thing, able to be molded, used
and discarded. The third condition is the predominance of the process in the world today
which has an autonomous dynamics and is independent of man and his decisions. Zigmunt
Baumann added to Hannah Arendt s vision a new comprehension of the mechanisms and
motives that can slip into this form of Evil: the fight against the indeterminate, the chaotic and
the ambivalence, trying to create a controlled and less threatening world. But, in the fight
against ambivalence, an even greater chaos is created around this orders that are built. In this
world on which one wants to impose the order of a deterministic law or project, the bureaucrat
is the main agent of this form of Evil. The question of the Banality of Evil raises the question
of what are the means at our disposal to oppose it / Com esta dissertação, pretende-se ampliar a abrangência do conceito de Banalidade do
lógica do extermínio.
A terceira condição é o predomínio do processo no mundo

[en] ARENDT ON KANT: POSSIBILITIES OF JUDGMENT IN A TIME DEVOID OF WORLD / [pt] ARENDT LEITORA DE KANT: POSSIBILIDADES DO JUÍZO EM UMA ÉPOCA POBRE DE MUNDOCLAUDIA CRISTINA XAVIER SILVEIRA 21 December 2017 (has links)
[en] Our work intended to present the notion of judgment in the writings of Hannah Arendt, whose comprehension supports itself on a free interpretation of Kantian aesthetic reflective judgment. The reasons why Arendt would have turned herself to the theme reflect her concern about the darkening of the world, whose plurality had been visibly threatened by the advent of totalitarianism. For philosopher, the unprecedented events that came from totalitarianism are part of a context in which the lack of deliberation and a subsequent inability to judge what was happening made the 20th century one of the darkest periods of human history. Arendt studied the faculty of aesthetic reflective judgment, capable of deliberating about the particular without a given universal, in a political context, and its characteristics point to the necessity of comprehending without handrails the mundane topics that present themselves on contemporaneity. We are able to consider only a fragmented Arendtian theory of judgment, since this was a research project not done solely by herself, and of which we have a whole puzzle to assemble. The pieces of this puzzle can be found beginning on her first essays, when the political action was her intellectual leit motif. Later, from Eichmann s judgment on, when she became an example on her own reflective judgment after coining the expression banality of evil. Judging prospectively with an enlarged mentality or retrospectively with disinterest are, then, two possible sides of the same coin: the judgment of taste, something Arendt tried to rescue and bring to light. This judgment holds the same characteristics of communicability and
intersubjectivity that make possible the existence of the world, understood as the space between men and space of visibility of reflective judgment. For this reason, the activity of judging, comprehended this way, is the only spiritual faculty of men capable of establishing the horizon of plurality.

[pt] A ESCOLA NÃO É UM LUGAR FÁCIL... NÃO MESMO!: BULLYING, NÃO-RECONHECIMENTO DA DIFERENÇA E BANALIDADE DO MAL / [en] THE SCHOOL IS NOT AN EASY PLACE ... NOT EVEN!: BULLYING, NON-RECOGNITION OF DIFFERENCE AND THE BANALITY OF EVILPAMELA SUELLI DA MOTTA ESTEVES 10 March 2016 (has links)
[en] This is a qualitative study on school violence. This research aimed at knowing, interpreting and comprehending the aggressive actions also known as bullying that happen among peers. This work took place at a public high school in the state of Rio de Janeiro. We intended to investigate the teachers and students perceptions concerning bullying as a type of school violence. Our hypothesis was that higher rates of bullying actions are related to the students difficulties at recognizing and dealing with cultural and identity difference that is built and rebuilt in the school environment. In order to comprehend the motives that were behind those aggressive actions, we investigated bullying as intolerance towards difference. We perceived that intolerance to difference is not enough to explain the severity of these aggressive acts. Thus, we investigated bulling as a maliciously trivial behavior. The source of this kind of behavior is a result of the inability to think and to reflect upon the meaning and the consequences of those aggressive acts. This inability is also a result of a modern society project that does not give the right value to an educational approach aimed at thinking and reflecting. We considered that intolerance and the banality of evil as expressions that motivate and explain bullying. We use the Theory of recognition by Charles Taylor and Axel Honnet and the concept of banality of evil by Hanna Arendt as a basis to our main hypothesis. As our methodological choices, we have had an extensive literature review, along with field observation, questionnaires and semistructured interviews with eight teachers and ten students who volunteered. As a conclusion to this work, we found that students know what bullying is, they know the practice and they are affected by this kind of violence, however they do not completely trust on their school asan institution that could be able to help them face the problem. Teachers know how to identify the bullying cases, but they do not mind comprehending the reasons that lead to those actions. At most, they think of some strategies in order to face the problem. The school management denies that bullying occurs and interprets these conflicts and aggressions as routineplays that normally take place at school. This research also pointed out that bullying is a sidelined and a trivialized theme at school.

-Lima, Rodrigo César Castro 24 May 2019 (has links)
The problem of evil is crucial to the field of communication. It presents an important role in the definition of news-value regarding the \"construction\" of the news. Such an affirmation can be postulated since the birth of journalism\'s history. This dissertation presents the hypothesis that when we communicate the first function we want to execute is the transmission of negative values; firstly, we communicate what is evil (a tragedy, a threat, a death, etc) and only later we communicate the rest, because evil implies in a direct transformation of our daily routine. Evil, therefore, comes ahead in everything dealing with the representation of the facts, because there is an asymmetry regarding the values of life. This physiognomy of human communication lies in the entangled amount of subjective data we communicate to each other. This necessity to imply evil in the transmission of facts is the conjoint epistemology of the field of communication and news as a whole. The necessity of human communication in conveying evil results in the formation of news as we know it. Consequently, an innovative epistemological hypothesis comes to the field of communication through the news.

[en] IS TO TOLERATE A LITTLE? FOR A PHILOSOPHY OF THE EDUCATION STARTING FROM THE CONCEPT OF TOLERANCE / [pt] TOLERAR É POUCO?: POR UMA FILOSOFIA DA EDUCAÇÃO A PARTIR DO CONCEITO DE TOLERÂNCIAMARCELO GUSTAVO ANDRADE DE SOUZA 16 January 2007 (has links)
la. A humanidade -
Neste sentido,
a educação tem um
papel fundamental a desempenhar no embate por sociedades
menos intolerantes e
Minha pesquisa visa
contribuir com esta demanda. Para isso, busquei refazer o
desenvolvimento do
atuais, destacando o
quanto no campo
educacional. Tolerância é um mínimo moralmente exigível,
aquele pouco que nos
revela o fundamental.
educativa. / [en] Tolerance is sometimes considered the negative attitude of
one who does not
accept, much less love, another human being but is willing
to put up with, or
allow for, the existence of others by being condescending.
The concept of
tolerance has become a key debate topic since intolerance
towards diversity is a
recurring situation in society. Undoubtedly, diversity
reflects our real identities
but at the same time we seem unable to handle it.
Humanity - painfully stained
by black slavery, religious wars, native Indian genocide,
the Jewish holocaust, and
prejudice against homosexuality and against women - is no
longer willing to
allow for intolerance of diversity. Intolerance is not
just a question of not
accepting diverging opinions: hate is an aggressive
perspective that is responsible
for destroying diversity. Thus, education has an important
role to play in the battle
between less tolerant societies and those that are more
open to human diversity.
However, not just any kind of education will suffice. It
is important to select an
education project approach that offers a comprehensive
definition of tolerance
based on facts. My research study aims to fulfill that
role. Therefore, I tried to
offer a background on the concept of tolerance, from the
Renaissance period until
recent times, highlighting the historical battle between
intolerance and tolerance.
To further expand on the concept of intolerance I used as
reference Hannah
Arendt´s research work, specifically selecting the concept
of banality of evil. To
further support this thesis, I referred to Adela Cortina´s
theories on ethics of
minimum requirements. Ultimately, my paper states the
thesis that tolerance
represents a big step. It represents the basic belief-
system both in the field of
ethics and education. Tolerance is a moral minimum
requirement, the basic
building block which reveals what is fundamental. However,
the definition of fundamental is actually not what
constitutes minimum requirement but, instead,
what is considered invaluable, essential, and cannot be
lacking in social
interactions, much less in education.

Santos, Ercolis Filipe Alves 23 February 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to verify if the implantation of the judicial hearing of custody in
Brazil represents the beginning of a civilizing and humanizing process of the criminal justice
system, in so far as it translates into an instrument of criminal policy to combat the culture of
the normality of violence in the act of imprisonment. For that, a historical-evolutionary
clipping is made on the practice of torture, in search of a conceptual delimitation of this
phenomenon that has a significant conceptual variation. Next step, a correlation is drawn
between the custody hearing and the constitutional fundamental rights and guarantees of the
detainee in flagrant offence, specifically, as regards the violation of the detainee's physical
and moral integrity. In this historical and normative hermeneutic north, from a re-reading of
the Arendtian concept of banality of evil, it is investigated whether the custodial audience
would be a prelude to overcoming the normality of the inhumanity, the naturalization
(banalization) of violence in the act of imprisonment in flagrant offence.
moral do detento.

Many studies have already examined the singular place occupied by the character in Larry Tremblay’s dramaturgy. This Quebec author’s works are filled with many individuals who are deeply affected by the environment they live in. For the past 20 years, the playwright’s particular interest in the theme of media has been observed. By creating plays in which the media are at the forefront, Larry Tremblay takes a critical look at an important aspect of current society. In the context of this thesis, the objective is therefore to study more specifically Tremblay’s characters who are in environments pervaded by the media. In order to show how the author exposes the negative impacts of the power of the media, we will address the question of the gaze, the banality, the void, the narcissism, as well as that of the disillusion that touches our time. The analysis of Ogre (1995), Téléroman (1997) and Grande écoute (2015) will demonstrate that it is through characters whose identity is crumbling and changing that Larry Tremblay denounces the most disastrous consequences stemming from the media for individuals. The purpose of this thesis is to grasp the evolution of the author’s thought regarding media and to understand how his characters have evolved over time alongside the media.
