verbais e visuais / This work uses french semiotics to analyse the TV series Breaking bad, transmited
between 2008 and 2013 on AMC channel in the United States. Identified as part of the so
called new american TV “Golden age”, the series created by Vince Gilligan features an
inventive narrative that was equally accepted by the audience and TV critics, with its
protagonist, Walter White, as the greatest cause of its success. In this work, the narrative
and discoursive levels of Algirdas Greimas’ generative meaning trajectory are used to
follow which strategies are used in this audiovisual work. In special, we propose a study
about the protagonist’s passions and the values that are displayed through the articulation
between verbal and visual recourses

Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att delge negativa besked : En integrerad kunskapsöversikt / Nurses’ experiences towards breaking bad news : An integrative reviewOlofsson, Malin, Forsberg, Albin January 2019 (has links)
The event of breaking bad news is a subject that no one present in the practical setting could choose to avoid. It is a subject that the practitioners comes in touch with during a daily basis. Traditionally the role as the breaker of bad news has been settled by the physician, but at the time being, disagreements occur in the clinical setting about who should break bad news to familys and patients. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the nurses’ experiences of breaking bad news. What are the nurses’ role in the event of breaking bad news, and are there any barriers that can affect the way the bad news is given to the patients and family members? These were two questions of issue that were looked into. Method: The integrative review method based out of Whittemore and Knafl (2005) was used for this review. A systematic search resulted in twelve articles that were deemed fitting for the purpose of this study. Results: This integrative review resulted in five identified roles carried out by the nurse in the event of breaking bad news. Further on, nine factors were identified as being of significance in how the bad news were delivered by nurses and received by patients and the patient’s family members. Nurses expressed a desire and a wish for some kind of education or training in how to break bad news. Conclusion: This article contributes with five roles experienced by nurses, along with nine different factors to have in mind when carrying out difficult news. The SPIKE model and Gibbs reflective model were discussed to have a great importance in the clinical setting.

This thesis analyses the architecture of the fictional world created over the course of five seasons by the television series Breaking Bad (2008-2013), emphasizing: its setting, specially the ways through which its fictional counterpart of Albuquerque, the desert around it and the characters’ homes are constituted; and the ambivalent construction of its atmosphere and protagonists, which have a disposition to decay over the course of the series. To that end, we pay special attention to three dimensions related to the edifice of this world: the ways through which the work summons us to immerse into its world, the strategies employed in its arrangement, and the specific elements that furnish it. Here, we try to distance ourselves from the heuristic use with which the concept of fictional world has been met over the last few years, and we aim to operationalize important notions it brings in its core, such as incompleteness and frame of reference. Furthermore, the work examines not only how this world erects itself by its own merits, but also how it approaches certain intertextual references in doing so. Namely, we point out interfaces between the series and: the movies Paris, Texas (1984) and Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West, 1968); the realistic documental photographs of William Eggleston and Lee Friedlander; and consecrated genres such as the western, the bourgeois drama, and the melodrama. Moreover, this study conjugates semantic matters attached to fictional worlds, the pragmatic issue of how the work prompts our immersion, and formal syntactic aspects of television fictions, specifically style and seriality. As for the ways through which Breaking Bad invites us to immerse into its world, by its turn, we observe: a) the recourse to intense diegetic recapitulations, which allow us to remember considerable portions of the series’ braids; b) the long term construction of the elements that push the plot forward, like the Walt Whitman’s book that leads Hank to the discovery that his brother-in-law is a drug dealer; c) the creation of a temporal structure that, despite its many breaks in linearity, follows a continuous flow, given that it doesn’t partition the narrative in multiple chronologies, as do Lost (2004-2010) and Once Upon a Time (2011-); d) the investment in tridimensional protagonists, even if the secondary characters are not tridimensional themselves; and e) the bet in concentration of time, space, and action. At the end of this work, we argue that Breaking Bad builds a unique world, which cannot be reduced to a representation of our own, regardless of the fact that such world is not in the regime of the fantastic or the marvelous.

Previous issue date: 2018-06-28 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Fundação São Paulo - FUNDASP / The current research intends to investigate Vince Gilligan’s creation paths during the
development of the character Walter White in the series Breaking Bad. A serial work created
for the television is an open work, in constant evolution and development and subject to
drastic interventions in its narrative path. The author who draws upon an initial proposition to
develop such path must consider possible incoherences throughout the story, which could
occur due to external interferences and characteristics of the market. Such aspect is not found
in the story and this fact instigates is to investigate the paths which were created by the author
in order to establish a natural progression for the character, without losing, however, the
identity and the coherence of the narrative. Our focus is on the analysis of episodes of the
series, as well as interviews given by the author and specific publications on the backstage of
the creation processes, aiming to understand the interactions between script creation
procedures and choices regarding the audiovisual resources adopted by the author throughout
the seasons. We also discuss the series as a genre in the audiovisual context under the
perspective of coherence development throughout time. Our theoretical approach is based on
the concepts of author from Machado (2011) and Bakhtin (2010) in relation to criticism of
creation process and networks of creation (Salles, 2000; 2006; 2008; 2013; 2017) as well as
perder, porém, a identidade e coerência narrativa.

The ACORFORMed ANR project, in which this PhD project is integrated, aims at the creation (by computer scientists) of a "patient" animated conversational agent as a training tool for announcing, simulating and using a virtual environment. Using the methodology resulting from gestures studies and contributions of the literature on the organisation of interactions, we try to answer the following question: what is the overall structural organisation of the doctor/patient interaction, when this last is training to break the news of a damage associated with care? The analyses carried out in this thesis allow us to describe the doctor/patient interaction during training to break the news by proposing different phases that make up the interaction, as well as details about their division and their articulations. They are an indispensable and usable base for computer scientists to design and implement a credible "patient" conversational agent that can be used in physician training. Located at the heart of an interdisciplinary project, this thesis in linguistics makes it possible to transpose the interactional practices of physicians with a view to the implementation of a virtual agent by computer scientists.

Crisis and Masculinity on Contemporary Cable TelevisionSchmiedl, Dominic 20 August 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Both the “crisis of masculinity” and “quality TV” have been popular discourses in academia in recent years. Many of these contemporary quality TV series feature male anti-heroes at the center of their narratives. This dissertation argues that the constructions of masculinity in series such as "Breaking Bad" and "The Walking Dead" are informed by the Western hero.
Furthermore, the dissertation links this recourse to an arguably outmoded model of masculinity to recent crisis tendencies in the USA, most notably the recent economic downturn and the aftermath of September 11 2001. Moreover, the return of the Western hero can be understood as a process of remasculinization in light of the crisis of masculinity.

Annonce de mauvaises nouvelles dans le cadre de la prise en charge de patients atteints de sclérose en plaques : approches phénoménologique et clinique des processus intrasubjectifs et intersubjectifs de la relation médecin-patient / Breaking bad news in multiple sclerosis : phenomenological and clinical approaches for subjective and intersubjective processes analysis of the doctor-patient relationshipHoullé, William 28 November 2017 (has links)
Contexte. Conclusion et ouverture. This research aims to explore the neurologist’s and patient’s lived experiences of breaking bad news in multiple sclerosis and the lived experience of this disease, to understand the basic conditions of their relationship, and to create reflective clinical tools aimed at helping neurologists to maintain the quality of their relationship with the patients. Methodology. Multicentre qualitative study presents the results obtained from the analysis of 83 clinical research interviews with 35 patients and 20 neurologists, using IPA and a clinical psychodynamic. Results. Breaking bad news (BBN) in multiple sclerosis are lived as stressful experience for the majority of the neurologists of the research, a situations lived with frustration and sometimes powerlessness. Psychic impacts engendered by the BBN, the perception in certain cases of a relation to the doctor divested of empathy, the feeling of powerlessness linked to the unpredictable character of the evolution of this gradually crippling disease as well as a mistrust as for the efficiency of the proposed treatments explain partially the fragility of the therapeutic alliance with the neurologist and sometimes the extreme psychological reactions of the patients. Conclusion and opening. Results obtained : engage an ethical reflection on the information to transmit to the patient, and to suggest training to neurologists based on the tool created in tis research

Examensarbete i omvårdnad 15 högskolepoäng. / NURSÉS EXPERIENCES IN BREAKING BAD NEWS DIALOGUES WITH PATIENTS IN THE END OF LIFEA LITERATURE REVIEWHolgersson M, Johannesson J. Degree Project in nursing 15 credit points, Malmö University: Faculty of Health and Society, Department of Care Science, 2020.The nurses has a prominent and important role in breaking bad news dialogues. As the patient is in the final stage of life and the care goes from curative to palliative, it is important that this is done at the right time and in the right way. The nurse´s participation in breaking bad news dialogues should bring a feeling of safety for both the patient and relatives and through the knowledge of the patient the nurses can contribute to a better care in the final stages of life. Purpose: The purpose with the study was to analyze nurses experience and knowledge about breaking bad news dialogues with patients in the final stages of life. Method: A literature study was conducted where ten articles of qualitative design that responded to the purpose were selected. A content analysis was done where the articles were reviewed and synthesized down to a result. Result: The outcome resulted in four main themes. Communication within the team and with patient and relatives. The interaction in the team and with the patient and relatives. Relationships and experiences in the meeting with patient and relative and finally the nurse´s experiences and emotions in their work with the patient before, under and after breaking the bad news. The nurse has often cared for the patient during a longer period of time and has created a relationship and learned what is important for that particular patient which is a huge asset during the breakpoint dialogue to meet the patient´s wishes and create conditions for good nursing. Conclusion: Communication in the team and preparation are important in the work regarding patient and relatives in breaking bad news dialogues. The nurse need education and experience in breaking bad news dialogues to feel safe in her role to be a good and distinct support for patient and relative in breaking bad news dialogues. Keyword: Breaking bad news, life experiences, lived experiences, nurses, palliative care.
