Key Factors that Make ‘Free Business Models’ Successful in Software as a Service Ventures

MEKOUAR, ALI, POHILJ, DINO January 2015 (has links)
This thesis research analyzes why and how Software as a Service (SaaS) ventures can succeed or fail using the two forms of free business models: freemium and free based on a multi-sided platform. Software as a Service ventures nowadays need a strong market presence and visibility to be financially sustainable, and that is why they are constantly innovating methods to reach solvency. Many of those companies chose free business models to reach that market presence and economic growth. Academic research in this subject is very limited, and there is no framework or guide that shows how companies using these business models can succeed. The aim of this research is to address that gap and determine the key factors that lead to success for ventures using these business models. The researchers‘ approach of understanding, analyzing and deciphering these business models stands on a qualitative open-ended research strategy with case studies, backed by interviews of companies using these business models. The findings are based on the gathered and analyzed data from the case studies and the interviews. The result of this research is the classification of key factors in three major groups: Customers, Development Strategy, and Business Sustainability. This research expands the information and understanding in the field of business models, and more precisely freemium and free based on a multi-sided platform. Also, it demonstrates that both free business models can be a viable choice for SaaS ventures.

Business Model Innovation in the Film Industry : How Nordic Film Studios Adapt to a Changing Market

Knobloch, Paulina Merle January 2021 (has links)
During the last 15 years, the film industry has undergone severe technological, cultural, and economic transformations initiated through online film distribution. Existing players need to adapt and innovate their business models to stay competitive. However, there is little knowledge about what players actually do in this respect. Since the film industry is of great economic and cultural importance, it is essential for researchers and managers alike to understand the transformations in the business models of film companies. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate which areas of the business models of Nordic film studios have been most affected by changes and how the studios have responded to these transformations. Based on a longitudinal, comparative case study of the companies SF Studios and Nordisk Film, the study reveals that distribution channels, revenue streams, margins, partner network, customer needs, and core offerings have changed the most. The main transformations can be seen in stronger partnerships and an increased focus on in-house production to serve the high demand for content, secure a content flow for distribution, and generate new revenues.

Date: 27/05/2021 Level: Bachelor thesis in Business Administration, 15 cr Institution: School of Business, Society and Engineering, Mälardalen University Authors: Hekmat Bsirini, Moe Gamil Hashem, and Hasitha Gayathri Jayasinghe                    (93/04/22)        ( 90\08\23 )                 ( 86/11/04 ) Title: A Disruptive Innovation Approach to Design a Business Model for a Startup DigitalHealthcare Platform. Tutor: Leanne Johnstone Keywords: disruptive innovation - healthcare - business model - digitalization - business modelinnovation. Research question: How should a disruptive innovation be successfully integrated into the business model of a digital healthcare platform startup, in terms of its value proposition? Purpose: Understanding the importance of innovative business models for new entrants to the healthcare sector, in terms of the marketing-related elements (namely, customer relationships, segments, and channels) which affect the whole process as the means to implement strategic aims. Method: This study used an action research approach. Data was generated by three integrative methods; a discussion with five board members of the case company, a secondary data review, and a questionnaire survey with potential customers. Conclusion: The model developed in this study identifies the implications of the disruptive innovation approach for a startup digital healthcare platform. It points out, identifying a customer segment that has been away from digital healthcare platforms due to certain inefficiencies in current platforms and designing the business model elements to cater to their needs eventually leads to the domination of the startup in the market.

Owner-managers failure experience and business model innovations in B2B firms: The roles of coopetition, managerial persistence, and financial resource slack

Nyuur, Richard B., Donbesuur, F., Owusu-Yirenkyi, D., Ampong, G.O.A., Tantawy, A.A. 26 June 2023 (has links)
Yes / This study proposes and tests a model of how and when previous failure experience can impact on subsequent business model innovation of business-to-business (B2B) SMEs. Analysis of survey data from a sample of 182 B2B SMEs in Ghana indicates that failure experience is positively related to business model innovation – and that coopetition capability mediates this failure experience. Further analysis of boundary condition effects reveals that high levels of financial resource slack strengthen the positive relationship between coopetition and business model innovation, while the level of managerial persistence has no effect on failure experience and coopetition relationship. We discuss the theoretical and managerial implications of these findings.

Sundin, Niklas, Tingwall, Joel January 2024 (has links)
This study examines how Generative AI impacts the business model of management consulting firms. Using a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews, data was collected from a management consulting firm and a client company. The results show that Generative AI can streamline processes, particularly in text handling and text creation, without immediately altering the revenue model. However, significant changes in the business model are expected in the long term if the technology gains greater traction. The conclusion is that Generative AI primarily presents opportunities but also poses a challenge for the industry, where early implementation and adaptation are crucial for maintaining competitiveness.

Andersson, Joakim January 2018 (has links)
A market change comes with challenges for the organisations which operate on that market, since they must adjust to the new market conditions, a new competitive situation and such. The purpose of this study was to examine which challenges organisations experience when they develop their business models. This was performed by doing a literature review as well as interviews with representatives from the electric market in Sweden. The result from the literature review showed that multiple concepts can be connected to form an encompassing view with the change as the catalyst. Four aspects regarding challenges could be developed based on previous research: (1) he organisation is not used to change management; (2) the organisation is used to change management; (3) management does not know how to start working with BMI; and (4) management knows how to start working with BMI. The result from the interviews showed that the literature was reflected in reality, since the informants described several concepts from the literature. The informants’ organisations could be placed in the aspects which had been developed and based on previous research suggestions of how to handle these challenges could be developed, some of which the informants had already applied (but not fully, yet).

Business Model Innovation and Connectivity : A case study of how change management can facilitate business model innovation / Affärsmodellsinnovation och den uppkopplade industrin : En fallstudie av hur förändringshantering underlättar affärsmodellsinnovation

Jäderberg, Filip, Kottorp, Max January 2019 (has links)
Disruptive innovation calls for disruptive change as it poses both opportunities as well as threats to established companies. However, many companies fail to integrate new technologies and industry leaders see their position being claimed by more ambidextrous companies. This thesis investigates the introduction of connectivity solutions in the metrology sector, and how it impacts the business model of traditional organisations. The research has been conducted through a single case study of a B2B provider of hardware and software solutions in the metrology sector. Based on the research including interviews and literature review, the most important conclusions drawn are: • Connectivity drives significant business opportunities for the service organisation of Maxfil • The identified business opportunities of connectivity demand significant change requirements of the business model; all parts of the business model are subjective to change • Change management can be a tool to highlight flawed strategies in adopting connectivity, thus facilitating business model innovation The study contributes to the field of science and business model innovation by emphasising the importance of change management, decreasing the gap between the research fields. Suggestions for future research is to validate the findings of the study by extending the scope of the thesis and include multiple organisations on their way of adopting connectivity.

Transition towards plant-based dairy substitutes : An exploratory study on the driving forces and the windows of opportunity for startups / Övergången till växtbaserade mejeri-substitut :  En studie som undersöker drivkrafterna och potentiella möjligheter för startups

Chowpradith, Nishapa, Kullgren, Kevin January 2021 (has links)
A radical shift in consumption and production of food is necessary to combat climate change. This has sparked interest in diets and their implications on the environment, both among researchers and among consumers. Plant-based dairy substitutes is one field of products that is experiencing significant growth. The dynamics in the market have created many opportunities for startups to enter the market with new products. However, because of the novelty of the topic, business models for sustainable food startups is a lacking area of research. Further, in order to successfully enter the market, it is essential for startups to fully understand the market dynamics from a holistic perspective. To investigate the mechanisms driving the transformation, as well as the potential windows of opportunity for startups, a survey and interviews were conducted. The survey had the aim of understanding the drivers of change among the consumers. The interviews were conducted with multiple startups and related organizations, which aimed to discuss the survey results while looking at the supply side of the market. The survey results presented interesting insights such as potential target consumers, consumer preferences in the plant-based dairy space, and potential gaps in the market. This was followed by the interviews where the business models, industrial dynamics and challenges were explored. The results were analyzed by theoretical frameworks such as the multi-level perspective. This study concluded that a transition towards plant-based dairy substitutes is occurring and is mainly driven by concern for veganism/animal welfare and climate change in combination with R&D efforts which are rapidly improving the products’ taste, price and convenience. This transition has raised new windows of opportunity for startups to capture the market share with viable business model innovation. However, changing diets takes a large amount of time and many political institutions work to protect the dairy industry.
