Re-storying identities: Young women's narratives of teenage parenthood and educational support

Teenage parenting is widely constructed in prevailing research and public discourse as a social problem, with poor outcomes for parent and child. Teenage parents are regarded as a drain on state funds, too young to parent well, and at high risk of social exclusion, both educationally and economically. This thesis proposes that teenage motherhood is a turning point in a young woman’s life and identity, which can be an opportunity, rather than a problem, if there is adequate support for the mother and her child. It considers the role of a New Zealand School for Teenage Parents in providing this support. Using qualitative narrative methodology, ten young women, six family members and nine other members of the School community were interviewed about their experiences of its culture and practices. Six of the young women were also interviewed to gather their life stories. Informed by the narrative understanding that we story our identities from the narrative possibilities available to us within the varied discursive contexts of our lives, this thesis draws on these life stories to explore how the young women storied the fashioning of their own identities as young women, as learners and as young parents. It presents their stories of childhood and family life, teenage-hood and schooling, pregnancy and parenthood, their experiences at the School for Teenage Parents, and their lives since leaving the School, in order to consider the role of the School in supporting the positive refashioning of their identities. This thesis draws on social constructionist and narrative theories to interpret the storied contexts of the young women’s lives, and the role these often constraining and difficult contexts played in the fashioning of their multiple identities. Māori culturally responsive pedagogical theories are also drawn on to interpret the culture of the School for Teenage Parents, and its attempts to provide a supportive and affirming family or whānau environment for its students, in order to offer them more positive narrative possibilities of self and identity as young women, as learners and as young parents.

La recherche a pour objet la structuration du champ lexical des mots « chance », « fortune », « hasard » et « risque » du XVIIIe au XXIe siècle. Témoin de mutations qu’a connues la civilisation occidentale durant cette période, ce champ, qui se rattache à la notion de fortune / hasard, présente une relative homogénéité sémantique.Les mots (et leurs dérivés) sont étudiés à travers le déploiement, la régulation et la répartition des normes d’usages, non seulement en français hexagonal, mais aussi en français québécois. L’étude se fonde sur l’exploitation de deux types de corpus. D’une part, un corpus d’articles extraits d’une cinquantaine de dictionnaires sert à mettre en évidence la productivité morphosémantique et sémantique de ces unités dans une perspective historique large. D’autre part, un grand ensemble d’énoncés diversifiés permet, par la mise au jour de types de contextes, d’effectuer un suivi diachronique des usages. L’approche continuiste des différences d’usages s’appuie sur une représentation fréquentielle des changements sémantiques.La thèse apporte une contribution à la question de la variation des usages et du changement sémantique, qui ouvre sur plusieurs perspectives. Elle se veut d’abord une réflexion sur la théorie et la méthodologie descriptives, appréhendées à la lumière de l’analyse de la nature et du rôle des corpus. Elle met ensuite en évidence l’importance de la dimension intersubjective dans l’activité de signification, en particulier le rôle déterminant des structures syntagmatiques dans l’établissement de nouveaux usages sémantiques. Enfin, elle permet de mettre en relation le changement sémantique avec les conditions sociohistoriques et les représentations collectives. / The present study deals with the way in which the lexical field regrouping the words “chance”, “fortune”, “hazard” and “risqué” has been structured in the French language from the eighteenth century till the present day. Revealing major changes in western societies during this period of time, the field, which corresponds to the linguistic representation of the notion of fortune / hasard, presents a certain coherence.We have examined these words and their derived forms through the display, regulation, and distribution of norms of use, not only in Hexagonal French, but also in Quebec French. Two types of corpora have been analysed. On the one hand, a corpus of articles from around 50 dictionaries has been used to emphasize the lexical and semantic productivity of the different units on a large historical scale. On the other hand, in revealing context types, a set of texts reflecting French language varieties has allowed for carrying out a diachronic analysis of lexical uses. The continuist approach to semantic differences rests upon a frequential representation of semantic changes.The thesis brings a significant contribution to the question of usage variations and semantic change, providing new perspectives. It first deals with theory and methodology of lexical description, considered through the analysis of the nature and the role of corpora. It then evidences the central role of syntagmatic structures in the setting of new semantic uses. The study has finally put into relation semantic changes with their historical background and the collective representations of the time.

Příčinná souvislost v občanském právu / Causal nexus in civil law

The aim of this thesis is to provide an insight into the topic of causation in law and to acquaint its reader with the common methods of proving the causation before courts. Among the most used methods such as the 'but for' test, this paper focuses on specific aspects of this topic which were introduced to the Czech legal system together with the adoption of the Civil Code 2014. The thesis also includes description and analysis of alternatively used methods of proving 'multiple causation' cases such as the theory of 'loss of chance' and 'pure economic loss'. Among this analysis the comparison between Czech and British legal system is used extensively. The core of this thesis is the effort to confirm or to refute the hypothesis that despite the Czech legal system does not officially recognize distinction between 'factual causation' and 'legal causation' as it is done in the British legal system, methods from both categories are actively used by Czech courts. This paper also aims to analyze whether, due to the fact that recognition between 'factual causation' and 'legal causation' is not explicitly expressed in the Czech legal system, does exist any negative or positive impact on judicial decisions. Polyphibianism : evolving transdisciplinarity into an imaginary organism of living knowledge

Transdisciplinarity emerged from the urge to grasp the elusive knowledge in the most fertile zone in between and beyond disciplines that escapes even the most elaborate interdisciplinary operations. While interdisciplinary protocol enables experts to operate within foreign disciplines, in the extreme case as diverse as art and science (by inviting artists into scientific departments and vice versa), the production of knowledge remains confined to particular domains. To transcend these confinements and access the knowledge that evades institutionalisation Basarab Nicolescu’s Manifesto of Transdisciplinarity sets up conditions for an open structure to be grown outside the current compartmentalisation into a living knowledge. This thesis imagines a possible evolution of transdisciplinarity into knowledge to be lived internally rather than learnt externally in order to overcome the anxiety in transcending the established culture of disciplinary research. By entering the transdisciplinary zone, the identity of experts-specialists dissolves, even the crudest separation into artists and scientists becomes obsolete. From the illusion of losing control over knowledge arises the fear of a return to archaic, mystic or even shamanic ways of knowing. Far from proposing a return to shamanism in its ancient forms this thesis imagines the way of polyphibianism – an imaginary solution to navigate efficiently the protoplasmic state of knowledge that would be indigenous to culture of disciplinary researchers. With every significant discovery the disciplinary researchers already intuitively trespass into the very zone that the Manifesto of Transdisciplinarity invites them to enter intentionally. From examination of documented introspective inquiries into their act of discovery the thesis infers the necessary sensibilities and adaptabilities of the individuals to cross the borders of their disciplines. Their seemingly lost identity is temporarily restored with the term polyphibian (analogous to amphibian) designating their ability to survive and explore multiple environments. With each change of circumstances in research a polyphibian adapts by swiftly reinventing its instinctive instruments, mutating its organs of knowing, indifferently to conventional habits of thought. Through their introspective writings this thesis investigates the polyphibic aptitude of Henri Poincaré, Henri Bergson and Marcel Duchamp to scout at the periphery of physics, metaphysics and ‘pataphysics, to intuitively anticipate the role of chance, chaos and complexity in both arts and sciences. A threshold of complexity has to be surpassed in order to bring the current apparatus of knowledge to life. Bergson’s insight on laughter and dreams suggests how intellect could transcend itself. The thesis proposes to consider laughter as faculty that could induce self-awareness in the intellectual apparatus while dreams are considered to facilitate self-organisation of intellect on higher orders of awareness. In Deleuzian manner of mutating Bergson’s work into Bergsonism, polyphibianism is a mutation in transcribing the code of Creative Evolution where Bergson insisted on interdependency between the theory of knowledge and the theory of evolution. The scholarly dispute on Bergsonian and anti-Bergsonian tendencies present in Marcel Duchamp’s work is revisited in the thesis by interpreting the higher dimensional Bride as a polyphibic organism of living knowledge with access to higher orders of awareness, able to guide the Bachelor’s apparatus of mechanical production and preservation of knowledge out of its predicament. Informed by peculiar Duchampian experiments that challenged both the domain of art and science the research projects in this thesis consist of an intervention at CERN that tested the impenetrability of institutionalised art-science collaborations and installation of the Interval of Suspended Judgement with high mathematical precision at the threshold between physics and ‘pataphysics. With these projects the problems of categorising researchers into artists and scientists are revealed. As Deleuze suggested, to effectively formulate the problem, to realize it in multiplicity of contexts, a new concept must be invented, a new organism must be conceived. This thesis gave birth to an imaginary organism of living knowledge in order to relieve the unnecessary anxieties and to fully engage in transdisciplinary research.

The thesis deals with unemployment in the district of Ceska Lipa within the period 2007 -- 2011. During this time, two of main employers in the region dismissed large number of its employees. The massive layoffs during the economic crisis meant significant increase in the unemployment rate, especially when a number of vacancies was declining. Thus, labour office in Ceska Lipa decided to use resources from the European Social Fund and implement projects called "Restart for Ceskolipsko" and "Restart means a new chance" The thesis deals with the impact of these project on unemployment in the district, quantifies the costs of projects, how many participants within the projects succeeded or failed to employ. In addition, the aim of this thesis is to find out whether the projects implementation affected the occupational structure in the district, early retirement and the development of labor conditions in the region.

Stochastic optimization of staffing for multiskill call centers

Dans cette thèse, nous étudions le problème d’optimisation des effectifs dans les centres d’appels, dans lequel nous visons à minimiser les coûts d’exploitation tout en offrant aux clients une qualité de service (QoS) élevée. Nous introduisons également l'utilisation de contraintes probabilistes qui exigent que la qualité de service soit satisfaite avec une probabilité donnée. Ces contraintes sont adéquates dans le cas où la performance est mesurée sur un court intervalle de temps, car les mesures de QoS sont des variables aléatoires sur une période donnée. Les problèmes de personnel proposés sont difficiles en raison de l'absence de forme analytique pour les contraintes probabilistes et doivent être approximées par simulation. En outre, les fonctions QoS sont généralement non linéaires et non convexes. Nous considérons les problèmes d’affectation personnel dans différents contextes et étudions les modèles proposés tant du point de vue théorique que pratique. Les méthodologies développées sont générales, en ce sens qu'elles peuvent être adaptées et appliquées à d'autres problèmes de décision dans les systèmes de files d'attente. La thèse comprend trois articles traitant de différents défis en matière de modélisation et de résolution de problèmes d'optimisation d’affectation personnel dans les centres d'appels à compétences multiples. Les premier et deuxième article concernent un problème d'optimisation d'affectation de personnel en deux étapes sous l'incertitude. Alors que dans le second, nous étudions un modèle général de programmation stochastique discrète en deux étapes pour fournir une garantie théorique de la consistance de l'approximation par moyenne échantillonnale (SAA) lorsque la taille des échantillons tend vers l'infini, le troisième applique l'approche du SAA pour résoudre le problème d’optimisation d'affectation de personnel en deux étapes avec les taux d’arrivée incertain. Les deux articles indiquent la viabilité de l'approche SAA dans notre contexte, tant du point de vue théorique que pratique. Pour être plus précis, dans le premier article, nous considérons un problème stochastique discret général en deux étapes avec des contraintes en espérance. Nous formulons un problème SAA avec échantillonnage imbriqué et nous montrons que, sous certaines hypothèses satisfaites dans les exemples de centres d'appels, il est possible d'obtenir les solutions optimales du problème initial en résolvant son SAA avec des échantillons suffisamment grands. De plus, nous montrons que la probabilité que la solution optimale du problème de l’échantillon soit une solution optimale du problème initial tend vers un de manière exponentielle au fur et à mesure que nous augmentons la taille des échantillons. Ces résultats théoriques sont importants, non seulement pour les applications de centre d'appels, mais également pour d'autres problèmes de prise de décision avec des variables de décision discrètes. Le deuxième article concerne les méthodes de résolution d'un problème d'affectation en personnel en deux étapes sous incertitude du taux d'arrivée. Le problème SAA étant coûteux à résoudre lorsque le nombre de scénarios est important. En effet, pour chaque scénario, il est nécessaire d'effectuer une simulation pour estimer les contraintes de QoS. Nous développons un algorithme combinant simulation, génération de coupes, renforcement de coupes et décomposition de Benders pour résoudre le problème SAA. Nous montrons l'efficacité de l'approche, en particulier lorsque le nombre de scénarios est grand. Dans le dernier article, nous examinons les problèmes de contraintes en probabilité sur les mesures de niveau de service. Notre méthodologie proposée dans cet article est motivée par le fait que les fonctions de QoS affichent généralement des courbes en S et peuvent être bien approximées par des fonctions sigmoïdes appropriées. Sur la base de cette idée, nous avons développé une nouvelle approche combinant la régression non linéaire, la simulation et la recherche locale par région de confiance pour résoudre efficacement les problèmes de personnel à grande échelle de manière viable. L’avantage principal de cette approche est que la procédure d’optimisation peut être formulée comme une séquence de simulations et de résolutions de problèmes de programmation linéaire. Les résultats numériques basés sur des exemples réels de centres d'appels montrent l'efficacité pratique de notre approche. Les méthodologies développées dans cette thèse peuvent être appliquées dans de nombreux autres contextes, par exemple les problèmes de personnel et de planification dans d'autres systèmes basés sur des files d'attente avec d'autres types de contraintes de QoS. Celles-ci soulèvent également plusieurs axes de recherche qu'il pourrait être intéressant d'étudier. Par exemple, une approche de regroupement de scénarios pour atténuer le coût des modèles d'affectation en deux étapes, ou une version d'optimisation robuste en distribution pour mieux gérer l'incertitude des données. / In this thesis, we study the staffing optimization problem in multiskill call centers, in which we aim at minimizing the operating cost while delivering a high quality of service (QoS) to customers. We also introduce the use of chance constraints which require that the QoSs are met with a given probability. These constraints are adequate in the case when the performance is measured over a short time interval as QoS measures are random variables in a given time period. The proposed staffing problems are challenging in the sense that the stochastic constraints have no-closed forms and need to be approximated by simulation. In addition, the QoS functions are typically non-linear and non-convex. We consider staffing optimization problems in different settings and study the proposed models in both theoretical and practical aspects. The methodologies developed are general, in the sense that they can be adapted and applied to other staffing/scheduling problems in queuing-based systems. The thesis consists of three articles dealing with different challenges in modeling and solving staffing optimization problems in multiskill call centers. The first and second articles concern a two-stage staffing optimization problem under uncertainty. While in the first one, we study a general two-stage discrete stochastic programming model to provide a theoretical guarantee for the consistency of the sample average approximation (SAA) when the sample sizes go to infinity, the second one applies the SAA approach to solve the two-stage staffing optimization problem under arrival rate uncertainty. Both papers indicate the viability of the SAA approach in our context, in both theoretical and practical aspects. To be more precise, in the first article, we consider a general two-stage discrete stochastic problem with expected value constraints. We formulate its SAA with nested sampling. We show that under some assumptions that hold in call center examples, one can obtain the optimal solutions of the original problem by solving its SAA with large enough sample sizes. Moreover, we show that the probability that the optimal solution of the sample problem is an optimal solution of the original problem, approaches one exponentially fast as we increase the sample sizes. These theoretical findings are important, not only for call center applications, but also for other decision-making problems with discrete decision variables. The second article concerns solution methods to solve a two-stage staffing problem under arrival rate uncertainty. It is motivated by the fact that the SAA version of the two-stage staffing problem becomes expensive to solve with a large number of scenarios, as for each scenario, one needs to use simulation to approximate the QoS constraints. We develop an algorithm that combines simulation, cut generation, cut strengthening and Benders decomposition to solve the SAA problem. We show the efficiency of the approach, especially when the number of scenarios is large. In the last article, we consider problems with chance constraints on the service level measures. Our methodology proposed in this article is motivated by the fact that the QoS functions generally display ``S-shape'' curves and might be well approximated by appropriate sigmoid functions. Based on this idea, we develop a novel approach that combines non-linear regression, simulation and trust region local search to efficiently solve large-scale staffing problems in a viable way. The main advantage of the approach is that the optimization procedure can be formulated as a sequence of steps of performing simulation and solving linear programming models. Numerical results based on real-life call center examples show the practical viability of our approach. The methodologies developed in this thesis can be applied in many other settings, e.g., staffing and scheduling problems in other queuing-based systems with other types of QoS constraints. These also raise several research directions that might be interesting to investigate. For examples, a clustering approach to mitigate the expensiveness of the two-stage staffing models, or a distributionally robust optimization version to better deal with data uncertainty.

Satisficing solutions for multiobjective stochastic linear programming problems

Multiobjective Stochastic Linear Programming is a relevant topic. As a matter of fact, many real life problems ranging from portfolio selection to water resource management may be cast into this framework. There are severe limitations in objectivity in this field due to the simultaneous presence of randomness and conflicting goals. In such a turbulent environment, the mainstay of rational choice does not hold and it is virtually impossible to provide a truly scientific foundation for an optimal decision. In this thesis, we resort to the bounded rationality and chance-constrained principles to define satisficing solutions for Multiobjective Stochastic Linear Programming problems. These solutions are then characterized for the cases of normal, exponential, chi-squared and gamma distributions. Ways for singling out such solutions are discussed and numerical examples provided for the sake of illustration. Extension to the case of fuzzy random coefficients is also carried out. / Decision Sciences

Decision Makers’ Cognitive Biases in Operations Management: An Experimental Study

Behavioral operations management (BOM) has gained popularity in the last two decades. The main theme in this new stream of research is to include the human behavior in Operations Management (OM) models to increase the effectiveness of such models. BOM is classified into 4 areas: cognitive psychology, social psychology, group dynamics and system dynamics (Bendoly et al. 2010). This dissertation will focus on the first class, namely cognitive psychology. Cognitive psychology is further classified into heuristics and biases. Tversky and Kahneman (1974) discussed 3 heuristics and 13 cognitive biases that usually face decision makers. This dissertation is going to study 6 cognitive biases under the representativeness heuristic. The model in this dissertation states that cognitive reflection of the individual (Frederick 2005) and training about cognitive biases in the form of warning (Kaufmann and Michel 2009) will help decisions’ makers make less biased decisions. The 6 cognitive biases investigated in this dissertation are insensitivity to prior probability, insensitivity to sample size, misconception of chance, insensitivity to predictability, the illusion of validity and misconception of regression. 6 scenarios in OM contexts have been used in this study. Each scenario corresponds to one cognitive bias. Experimental design has been used as the research tool. To see the impact of training, one group of the participants received the scenarios without training and the other group received them with training. The training consists of a brief description of the cognitive bias as well as an example of the cognitive bias. Cognitive reflection is operationalized using cognitive reflection test (CRT). The survey was distributed to students at University of North Texas (UNT). Logistic regression has been employed to analyze data. The research shows that participants show the cognitive biases proposed by Tversky and Kahneman. Moreover, CRT is significant factor to predict the cognitive bias in two scenarios. Finally, providing training in terms of warning helps participants to make more rational decisions in 4 scenarios. This means that although cognitive biases are inherent in the mind of people, management of corporations has the tool to educate its managers and professionals about such biases which helps companies make more rational decisions.
